- Rekzai, on 10/31/2009, -13/+6520 tabs? really?? browse more efficiently dude.
- kylescousin, on 10/31/2009, -12/+56Hopefully this will fix some memory leaks. Firefox uses over 600 mb when over 20 tabs are over :/
Or maybe that's just what it needs and there are no memory leaks. - zeth006, on 10/31/2009, -3/+32Turn off the pr0n!
- nodetechblog, on 10/31/2009, -3/+31I like the new idea of Personas, a great new feature.
- Frexxia, on 10/31/2009, -0/+27Pre-alpha..?
- unrealmp3, on 10/31/2009, -0/+27I'm wondering if they will work on a better integration with Windows 7 eventually, like showing the tabs in the taskbar, etc.
- borez, on 10/31/2009, -0/+18Have adblock... there's no need for another.
- shannobn, on 10/31/2009, -3/+21• Expanded support for geolocation technology so it can provide a Web site with an approximate physical address of the user, not just latitude-longitude coordinates.
Why is thhis a good idea? - borez, on 10/31/2009, -0/+12You know not what you say.
- doshindude, on 10/31/2009, -1/+12that's been an extension for quite some time now.
- canyonblue, on 11/01/2009, -0/+11It does work and likely never will if the industry doesn't get their act together. HTML5 supports browsers playing video but the standard of video that HTML5 will use is highly debated. Apple and Youtube want to use H264 (which quicktime uses for example) but that is not a open source standard and would require Firefox to pay licensing fees to build support into the browser to decode the video. Firefox doesn't want to do that and so they want HTML5 to be based on Ogg V. which would be free. Hence... war, and no set standard. Go to any HTML5 site with Ogg V. files and it works beautiful. Safari, no joy. If it is H264 files the reverse is true.
- fmorel90, on 10/31/2009, -1/+11uh...3.1 became 3.5. Any builds of 3.1 were prerelease.
- pashok99, on 10/31/2009, -1/+10Its supposed to do that.
- brad3378, on 11/01/2009, -1/+10Sounds like these guys need to take their Ritalin.
- mason092, on 10/31/2009, -1/+10That isn't what jumplists are. Jumplists are the shortcut menus that come up when you right click on the icon.
- RagingReid, on 10/31/2009, -2/+11Hope it's better than the last version, which crashed on a daily basis.
- Frexxia, on 10/31/2009, -1/+9I got nearly 50% better performance on http://dromaeo.com/?recommended compared to 3.5.4 on the first few tests.
- rtypo, on 11/01/2009, -0/+8I don't think Beta versions are included in the automatic updater.
- getoffmybridge, on 10/31/2009, -1/+9It's using that much because it is available.
- fmorel90, on 10/31/2009, -0/+8Tabs in taskbar are in 3.6. Jumplists and download progress are coming in 3.7
- kahlessreborn, on 11/01/2009, -0/+7But it doesn't get my heart like Firefox does
- BugMeNot2, on 11/01/2009, -0/+6Whatever they're called, they are useful.
- tripmckay, on 10/31/2009, -1/+7I got a 94/100 with Beta 1, so no huge improvements there (but who cares about acid3 anyway, just some nice color bars :D)
- Chakat, on 11/01/2009, -0/+6They are tuning it for speed and efficiency. Firefox 3.6 has faster javascript performance, and the 3.7 trunk has even further tweaks. OS-specific tweaks are also being worked on; there are several tracking bugs for handling OS X performance issues, and handling how different OSes in general handle certain code branches.
Though more specific to your points, both of the platform integration features you mentioned are being worked on; both of those mean a lot of special casing that is a lot more difficult than a general system, especially when they want to retain similar usability across multiple platforms with varying feature sets; keychain support, for example, means that their unified backend code needs to be altered to support the keychain api, and also that you could no longer migrate profiles across multiple platforms. This has its own drawbacks for people who don't spend all their time on one machine and like to share one profile. Again, cross-platform is hard, especially when users like being able to not need to care about what OS their browser is running on at any moment.
Additionally, new features are useful. Lightweight themes -- personas -- means that changing your browser appearance doesn't need massive amounts of potentially leaky javascript. Weave means that your desktop has the same settings as your laptop, or any other computer you're at for that matter. Both of which will lead to a better user experience for most users.
Cross platform is hard. Look how absolutely horrible iTunes is under windows. It ignores pre-existing conventions on UI design and as such, sticks out on windows even worse than Firefox on the Mac. It's also why native UI browser projects exist, like Camino. Firefox places a higher emphasis on things looking decent across multiple platforms, even if it means things are a bit more uglier under the hood on one platform than on others. - Ghostwo, on 10/31/2009, -0/+6The Acid3 test has gone from 7 fails and 2 warnings to 6 fails and 1 warning. Almost there!
- Jareth86, on 11/01/2009, -1/+7Really, at this point, Windows 7 integration is all I care about.
- medost, on 10/31/2009, -6/+11Yep...I already upgraded. Actually it was automatic.
- k3rfuffl3, on 11/01/2009, -2/+7What are you comparing to? Every benchmark shows FireFox is actually one of the more efficient browsers memory-wise since 3.5.
- skppy1225, on 11/01/2009, -0/+4They are if you sign up for it.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/31/2009, -3/+7It supports the Windows 7 jump lists now or whatever they're called. (When you mouse over the icon in your taskbar, it shows you previews of all your tabs).
- teh_techie, on 10/31/2009, -0/+4Having each tab as a preview window is INTENDED functionality. Just like IE. It's a feature of windows that programmers are now able to take advantage of.
- Scatropolis, on 11/01/2009, -0/+4I guess if I didn't use google reader I'd probably have 40 tabs open too.
- Rkstar, on 11/01/2009, -0/+4So the HTML5 video was the thing I was most excited about... I immediately went to http://www.youtube.com/html5 which works with Safari... but still doesn't seem to work with Firefox. Anyone else have luck?
- getoffmybridge, on 10/31/2009, -0/+3ABP is free
- YKKonMyZipper, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3If you don't like Chrome nearly as much like you said. Then why did you switch? Yea it crashes a bit more like the commenter said but is that really good reason to switch to something you don't like nearly as much.
- DocHoliday22, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3Agreed.
- 2Deluxe, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3Yeah, who needs Windows 7 or Photoshop CS4 anyway?!
- Chakat, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3More accurate searches for localized stuff. Yeah, a search for pizza near your zip code will get decent results, but if your zip code is large, it may default to places on the other side of town. Better geolocation, which is an opt in feature, means that it give better results that really are close to you.
- riot, on 10/31/2009, -0/+3maybe you dont know but story you submit has a shelf life after 10 days you could get 1000 people to digg it. It will not make front page at this point it is like bad yogurt
- Hrodrik, on 11/01/2009, -1/+4So it's good that they know where you live.
Hey, at least you don't have to check for yourself which is the nearest pizza place. - Outofthenight, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3Can someone explain to me how having every tab as a taskbar tile (even grouped up like that) doesn't make having tabs redundant to begin with? The whole point is to keep everything contained, if I wanted more in my taskbar I know there the "New Window" command is.
- MikedaSnipe, on 11/01/2009, -1/+4-blinks- am I the only person that doesn't have their browser crash? What are you gyus doing exactly? Trying to render toy story using javascript?
- TheGuruStud, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3adblock plus with element hider + noscript = ultimate ad and BS blocking
- jrm125, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3I wish they weren't web-linked...sometimes it fails to connect and then I'm left theme-less. Why can't it just download it?
- peestandingup, on 11/01/2009, -3/+6Firefox needs to stop introducing "new & improved features!" & focus on speed & overall efficiency, especially on the Mac side. Its actually the worst of the big Mac browsers as far as that is concerned.
Maybe if they truly optimized it for Mac in the first place instead of basically porting the PC version over?? Hey guys, Keychain support, system wide spell check integration, etc would be useful at some point. Just saying. - MPKFA, on 10/31/2009, -0/+2I know your pain. I switched to Chrome after the last Firefox update. I don't like Chrome nearly as much but at least it is stable. I hope people don't digg me down, haha. For the record, I love Firefox and hope this new version fixes the bugs from the last.
- kahlessreborn, on 10/31/2009, -0/+2Anyone run ACID3 test with the new build. Does it beat the 3.5.4 score of 92?
- ArcadeJunkies, on 11/01/2009, -0/+2How do you change personas?
- ike2386, on 11/01/2009, -0/+2I use Firefox all of the time and I never use any other browser unless I need to for cross-browser compatibility, but a couple of these "new features" have always been there. I have used personas for quite some time now. Also, my plugins seem to keep up to date. Oh well. Firefox FTW!
- srg13, on 11/01/2009, -0/+2Safari does that, and I really hate it... If I have two Firefox windows with ten tabs each, I want to see the two windows in the taskbar, not just the first few tabs of the first window!
