- newdigger, on 11/13/2008, -5/+137Why are people still using Firefox 2? -serious question..
- benologist, on 11/13/2008, -2/+78Thank god they told us... you just can't trust automatic updates to let you know when these small updates are available!!
In other breaking news Windows downloaded some updates last night, and Apple's been bugging me all ***** week to install the latest version of MobileMe which I don't even use. - digger77, on 11/13/2008, -6/+56I'd do her. Oh wait, what are we talking about here?
- BlueScreenOD, on 11/13/2008, -0/+38I think people are more likely to check out an article if there's a pretty girl in the thumbnail.
- benologist, on 11/13/2008, -7/+40Because not everybody cares when a new version of a program comes out.... that's why people are still using Windows 98.
If like most people the only thing you use a web browser for is browsing the web there are not a lot of reasons to bother going through the update/installation process every time. - SuperMoses, on 11/13/2008, -0/+28Breaking: new virus definitions available for Avast!
- scoottie, on 11/13/2008, -5/+30so the poster is trying to make people not check out the article?
- Harbinger67, on 11/13/2008, -1/+26I won't quote you, because I'd sound like an idiot.
- falstaff, on 11/13/2008, -0/+25Because FF3 isn't compatible with NT 3.51
- VidaGeek, on 11/13/2008, -5/+29Dugg for making routine browser updates sexy again.
- Aldanga, on 11/13/2008, -2/+26To both of you, it's clothes.
- uptwolait, on 11/13/2008, -2/+26Because FF3 isn't compatible with Windows 3.1
- sonick, on 11/13/2008, -3/+26So.... what's up with the thumbnail?
- netneutrality, on 11/13/2008, -1/+24Couple of plugins, themes still incompatible, and I didn't like the awesome bar or interface changes. I did upgrade twice then downgraded again. I'll try again one day but I'm happy enough with it for now.
- newdigger, on 11/13/2008, -2/+16Update/Installation process? FF updated itself to 3.0.4 last night and I didn't even notice...
- 1807, on 11/13/2008, -0/+14Props for finding a way to still manage life with windows 3.1
- lcstein, on 11/13/2008, -0/+14wow you're cool!
- Step1Mark, on 11/13/2008, -0/+14I know a few people that use it because they keep putting off upgrading. Ive been there though before with some software but seriously Firefox 3 is a really nice jump. Plus the beta that is out is comparable to the speed of Google's Chrome.
- newwatch51, on 11/13/2008, -0/+14They're watching you
- ukblacknight, on 11/13/2008, -5/+17Am I missing something here? This isn't news!
- newwatch51, on 11/13/2008, -1/+13Because some addons don't work with FF3.
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+11Hey Melissa Shapiro has a cute smile.

Melissa Shapiro - MrNastyOne, on 11/13/2008, -6/+16I really wish I hadn't upgraded... ever since going to FF3, I get all kinds of memory problems with it.
Specifically, it doesn't close all the way when I exit the program and when I try to relaunch it, it tells me there is another instance running but cannot open. So I have to go into the Task Manager, stop that process from running (which is up to some HUGE memory usage) and then try again.
Never had any of these problem in FF2.
Anyone having similar issues? - SteveMax, on 11/13/2008, -0/+9Actually, THE browser for Win 3.1 was Opera 3.6:
http://arc.opera.com/pub/opera/win/362/english/
It was released in 1999, some six months after IE 5.0. It was much better also, the best CSS support available at the time. See:
http://www.icehouse.net/jim_d/br-wars.html - mimigins, on 11/13/2008, -0/+9Virus database has been updated
- netneutrality, on 11/13/2008, -1/+9Neither is any Firefox (sadly). Last browser that worked in Windows 3.1 was IE5.
- c0dem0nkey, on 11/13/2008, -1/+9Because some of us are building web applications for large bureaucratic institutions that cannot bend with every breeze that blows across the prairie. :)
Seriously: just because something is new does not always mean that it is better. Not everyone desires or needs to be "first". If a piece of tech does everything you need it to do, why upgrade? Take a look at the features the new tech provides and unless there is something of absolute substance that could substantially change how you use the tech, tread softly. - colonelpanic, on 11/13/2008, -0/+7Large companies and schools that have it in their image may have not rolled out the latest version.
- linuxrocks2007, on 11/13/2008, -1/+8You know you can disable the "awesome bar"...
http://www.downloadsquad.com/2008/06/17/dont-think ... - MAARRS, on 11/13/2008, -0/+7The following is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. This is a test.
If it was a real emergency, you would have known it by now. - Step1Mark, on 11/13/2008, -0/+7I think he is talking about milestone releases like v1.5, v2 and v3 not little incremental releases that are more or less patches of the previous core build.
- TheSpook, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6I second how loathsome Apple's update program is. I think they took tips from Adobe.
- sexybobo, on 11/13/2008, -1/+7FF2 works in 3.1 with some modding. I was playing around a lot with vmware and was able to get every version of windows 3-98 to connect to the internet and user firefox 2. (i have weird hobbies)
- antdude, on 11/13/2008, -1/+6Not everything works in v2. Until then, we wait.
- douglasr007, on 11/13/2008, -1/+5More like ***** addons don't work with FF3
- otakugeek, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4Do you post that in every Digg story that doesn't interest you?
- twiztidsinz, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4I had that problem all the time in FF2.
I've seen it maybe twice since upgrading to FF3.0 and not once since 3.1b1. - BXRWXR, on 11/13/2008, -2/+6Weird. Just as I'm posting, the update kicked in.
- fknrat, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4Yup, I have the same problem too, and it's annoying going into the TM to cancel the previous session.
- scottydawg, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3Are you complaining?
- TheSpook, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3I thought it was useful - Firefox didn't auto-update for me on any of my machines (one of which I restarted a few hours ago, though I shouldn't have to restart to at least be *notified* (in a non-obtrusive way) of new updates).
Why isn't there a standard "update center" in Windows/Mac???
1. When user installs XYZ program, it asks if the user wants it to be included in the "Windows Update Center (TM)".
2. If there is an update, it simply notifies Windows Update Center(TM) (if enabled, else reverts to application-specific setting).
3. Windows Update Center(TM) notifies you with a non-intrusive tray icon (one that you can disable, hide, and configure if you don't like it).
4. User can click update center icon to choose software updates, and optionally ignore specific update notifications forever if they specifically DO NOT want it installed (I'm talking to YOU Adobe, Apple).
I think that sounds nice! - inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3Why do you need to patch a web browser on a server? You shouldn't be using a ***** server to browse the web anyway.
- arizonagroove, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10. It has Firefox 2. Firefox 3 will not run on it(*) because Firefox 3 requires GTK 2.10 or higher. Redhat Enterprise Linux 4 or 5 (not sure which) has the same problem. Apparently Novell and Redhat will work together to pack port security patches in to Firefox 2 once Mozilla stop supporting it in December.
(*) Well that's not entirely true. It will run if you are willing to build GTK and it's dependencies to run it against. - Snake2582, on 11/13/2008, -1/+4I'd download her updates.
- anonimo99992000, on 11/13/2008, -1/+4I'd hit it
- wgasa, on 11/13/2008, -1/+4I just updated =)
- Van3ck, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3I still run v2 because I am forced to run FireFox as a portable application where I work... we are technically not allowed to install Firefox on the system, so I have it installed on my USB thumb drive, and run it that way.
v3 does not work well as a portable ap for some reason. Not sure why, but it goes slow and crashes. v2 is smooth as butter though. Until that issue is fixed, I will stick with v2. - threat42, on 11/13/2008, -1/+3Really, though. Chippyr is right. If Firefox auto-updates, why the hell do we need a Digg article to remind us?
