- cwalk, on 10/12/2007, -12/+32Hopefully they have fixed the memory leaks.
- justinjacobs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23I took some screenshots of it:

And yes, it's much faster on Linux now. Some other things I noticed were close buttons on tabs, news reader support, and a built in phishing filter.
PS: Sorry for the shamless site plug. - tomi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23note: this is a nightly release
- Sniper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Ok, Download Nightly Tester Tools to make your extensions compatible - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/958/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22Watch all the idiots rush to download the beta and then bitch about their extensions "breaking".
.... But it's Internet Explorer BETA **THREE**!!
Best post I ever saw. :) - galador, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Only if you want to beta-test and submit bugs. If you want a stable release stick with 1.5.0.4.
- rflint, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Oi. Figures someone would jump the gun and post links to the RCs (which aren't distributed to the rest of our mirror infrastructure) while we're moving ftp.mozilla.org to a new colo facility :/
Please just wait until Tuesday, these are just builds for QA to test and sign off on. They won't automatically update to any subsequent releases and it's still possible that we may respin to take a patch before B1. - FluffyArmada, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Oh my Gosh! It does! Yay!
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I was led to believe that this is a release candidate of a beta
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12The FireFox developers deserve a Nobel Prize in English for providing spell check as a standard feature.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14theres nothing to see really.
It seems to be quite a bit faster on linux though. - dougal1985, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10See the page on Wikipedia for a fairly accurate review of the new features: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox#Version_2.0
The history of recently closed tabs is nice, especially if you accidentally close a tab. Accidentally closing more than one tab is now harder, thanks to each tab having an individual close button. The other neat feature is the search-suggestions as you type, much like Google Suggest or the Yahoo equivalent. A very nice update! - hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10That's the rawest development version...
I'm currently using it and get such fun things as some text as wingdings and some sites the text doesn't flow anywhere near right.
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/firefox-3.0a1.en-US.win32.installer.exe - ScoTTeh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Why would you expect a new GUI ? Opera's hardly changed from 8.x -> 9.x.
- shad0w, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Can we get some screenshots of the new features?
- d3m3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Its kinda not the official beta 1, but close. I guess...
- jamesey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7any benefits from upgrading from 1.5.0.4?
- Erroneus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Why does a new release HAVE to be groundbreaking in the UI?
FF2 contains A LOT of bug fixes, making it a lot faster, they really worked a lot on memleaks, which is important. Yep it contains a few features from popular extensions making the browser better from the start, what the hell is wrong what that? - d3m3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5There's no new features from alpha 3, just some bug fixes, for some reason the 2.0b1 page hasn't been made yet. Theres alot of new features but it does crash sometimes. Restore session is awesome though.

Plus if you download the nightly it will autoupdate everyday. Very cool. - goat77, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I really like this version. Best firefox yet, hands down. The spellcheck is nice as well.
- Ancestor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Correction: there ARE some new features:
- ability to reopen recently closed tabs
- JavaScript 1.7 support
- scrollable tab bar a.k.a tab overflow (better handling of large amounts of tabs) - mouthster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3yes....
Digg 3.0 finally scrolls smoothly on my Powerbook now - mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Now they need a grammar checker so that you can be... "less of an idiot THAN I am."
Then is used primarily for time, such as I did x then y, or in a list or order of items. If you're comparing two things then you use than. I am much better at x than y. Or in your case, slightly less of an idiot than I am. - i440, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Compact menu Xpi went away. :(
And oh look, auto-spell checking when you type a comment! Pretty sweettttttttt. Now I will sound like slightly less of an idiot then I am. - Bogtha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Safari and Konqueror have had a native spelling checker for ages. Firefox is playing catch-up with this feature, they certainly shouldn't be winning prizes.
- Darkdata, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5ZOMG ITS FROM OPERA....
Who cares this is about firefox and not opera. If you don't like it don't click the link. - FluffyArmada, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4About the X in the tabs... "totally redundant"; I beg to differ. I hate having to run my mouse all the way to the other side of firefox to close a tab, and the x only takes up like... 5 pixels anyways. :-
Especially when closing a bunch of tabs... left right left right left right... gaaa! - weoh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4If you don't want to reach for the X at the edge, you can middle mouse click the tab to close it, or LMB and RMB at the same time.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've had this for a long time with the Aspell-fox extension (which just said "Aspellfox" is not a word), but it is great to see it integrated into the browser. On the surface this is good, forcing people to spell correctly, but I am concerned it will make the idiots harder to spot. I guess there will always be the ALL CAPS typing and the copious use of the word "*****" to identify them.
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It works very well in OS X PPC under 10.4.7. I noticed that the Flash plugin support is greatly improved and allows for a better viewing experience than the last version of Firefox and even Safari. Flash works very well in this latest release. I can't wait for the final version.
- myfanwy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2even better, the mouse has been made totally redundant - Ctrl F4 closes the current tab, and the mouseless browsing extension let's you navigate links, just about anything you'd want to do in fact, using only the number pad. awesome, this alone makes FF so far ahead of any other browser, let alone the security, etc
- FrozenOrb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3So many folk are implying features added in the alpha 3 release are new features to beta 1.
- FluffyArmada, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7I hope it has a good RSS reader... then I can dump Safari. :-D
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They are still compatible with your current 1.5 install. Go into your extensions list, right click on them, and go to enable. It just disabled them. Every time you open the beta version it will disable them again. If you are only going to use 1.5 now, get rid of the beta and re-enable your extensions and themes.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Feels much more responsive on OSX-Intel. The GUI widgets don't have that annoying non-native delay anymore.
- UnderWurlde, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It didn't pick up on your "NEW SPEL CHECK" error... Funny!
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/2.0b1/mac/en-US/
for OSX - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2you might like the Sage extension. It is the best RSS reader for firefox I have found.
- jk3us, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ctrl+W also closes the current tab. Unfortunately, that also switches windows in a split-screen vim session. That's caused me some headaches.
- tomi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Does anyone get a problem where clicking on a link will sometimes scroll the page to the top? I thought it might be fixed in this release, but it still persists. I didn't see anyone complaining, so I thought it might just be my laptop. It didn't happen in 1.5.0.4.
- deadeyes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Same bugs, same instability....
- seandfeeney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ie tab works with it. not much else does though.
- ataferner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mozilla.org soon to release Alpha 1 of RC2 of Beta1 of Firefox 2.0
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1
Some are already even prepped for 2.0, but a good chunk don't.
There are also a few of the most popular that have been made redundant by inclusion into 2.0. So you may not need some of the incompatible ones anymore. Most of the popular extensions will work anyway. - Soave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Looks nice overall, and I hate to complain about just a beta, but I'm having a little problem... if I middle click and hold, then drag the mouse up and down to try to scroll, it doesn't work. Before, I would get that little circle with the arrows in it and I could scroll faster that way. Anyone else having this problem?
Also, I can't scroll through the tabs using the wheel anymore, but that's not really a problem. - matthartley, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4This is the author. Thanks so much for taking the time to give me a shout out. Yes, Firefox does rock and you should also head over to Blake Ross' blog and give him a huge digital high five for working so hard to make this happen. He sat behind me at Gnomedex 6.0 and is a very cool guy to chat with.
For those who don't know, he is the reason why the browser is where it is today... He is basically, the man behind the browser. - GodsHand, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Seems to work well on my MacBook Pro 17" Core Duo. Not as fast as Safari though.
- sherifgmansour, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It took me a while to switch, but I eventually did and dont want to go back. The main reson it took me soo long was that really it came down to one thing - performance. Why would I switch to a browser that took longer to load and wasnt already integrated into my shell (good old microsoft-style)
For me it was really two things:
1) Extensions - this really had a huge part to play with it. After seeing the number of extensions I could get for firefox, I was quite impressed
2) Community - The update of this was really starting to impress me.
2) - mikebb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This version rocks and it's noticeable faster on Windows. Impressed ... I may have to order a Firefox Polo Shirt -- Microshaft's IE7 cannot compare to Firefox.
