http://tinyurl.com/anypz - bryan986, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3lets hope it has some new features to warrant the number change, unlike 1.5
- accidental, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice, will digg this to get the word out.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Ooooookkaayyyy!!!!!
- GrimmRaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with bryan986. They should have some really new and kick ass features to justify the 2.0
Firefox hasn't disappointed me yet, so I'm not worried ;) - TomPetty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0lets hope this release is faster (as in browser speed) than 1.5
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"This page has been accessed 7000 times."
- jinexile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually the changes in 2.0 are not really that astounding, UI changes mostly, security and bug fixes. 3.0 however is where it's at, It's due to be released a couple months after 2.0
- nrbelex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It was called 1.5 because it was derived from 1. That's why it did NOT change numbers to 2. Nobody said there would be important new features so I don't know why they would be expected. I think we can expect a more dramatic change between 1.5 and 2.
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0neato!
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7My WishList:
1. Patch the memory leak
2. Fix the crashing-while trying to scroll on a page that's still loading bug
3. Speed up page rendering so it is as fast as Opera - razorsharp84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some of my extensions haven't even been updated for the recent 1.5.01 release...I think I'll wait awhile to try 2.0 and preserve my customized functionality...
- tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"It's due to be released a couple months after 2.0"
Er ...FF3 is due Q1 2007, but I have a feeling it'll be delayed due to a lot of unforseen regressions introduced by the switch to Cairo rendering. - Misos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mozilla should just focus on continuously improving Firefox as it is now (that is, bug fixes, performance efficiency, etc), instead of adding a bunch of newer features.
- GreenAlien, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well my wish list is proper zoom (like Opera's zoom) - essential if you use Firefox on a laptop with a high-res screen. Also, thumbnails of opened pages would be nice (like IE 7). And a set of revamped default buttons would give Firefox a more modern feel. Firefox needs to be tarted up because it currently looks bland - the functionality is there, but not much eye candy. Looks like 2.0 is going to be a marginal improvement.
- npacheco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1my wishlist:
MAKE THE OS X WIDGETS NON-HORIFIC
THEY LOOK FINE ON EVERY OTHER PLATFORM
THANKS :( - scottt106, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...Does it seem like firefox is just throwing around version numbers? It seems like it wasn't that long ago that 1.5 came out, and that was a major update. And it was within the week that 1.5.0.1 came out. How are we already jumping right to FF2 alpha 1? And if you look at the wiki, they already have FF3 in the planning.
I dunno, I would sure hope that for a major release like this, we're really going to see some big changes, but I'm not sure if that's a realistic expectation. - staticten, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Offtopic:
just saw bunch of Xbox 360 availble here:

Google "Foxpose" - I don't know who came up with the idea first, Firefox or IE7 (well, technically, the idea is from OmniWeb, but you get what I'm saying), but I personally prefer the extension "Tab Preview" that lets you simply mouse over a tab for a preview (that way, you don't have to leave your current tab).
As far as Firefox's default skin goes, I am more than content with it - I've always thought it looked just fine and usable (not to mention most Firefox converts came from IE6 - now there's an archaic interface).
There's also a few Image Zoom extensions for Firefox that work just as well as Opera's.
I'm personally in the boat of "I want fewer features, more fixes." Though I personally don't have the problem, I know many complain of memory leaks, and the Gecko engine isn't the quickest to render (though I think it does do a damn good job). I'd personally be more than happy if Firefox shipped with NO extra functionality outside of browsing (like the pre 1.0 days), and any extra functionality I need I can add with extensions. - patrickweber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I miss the days when companies would pack in loads of new features into a point point point (?) release (ie: from 1.0.7.1 to 1.0.7.2) rather than dramatically increasing their version numbers.
Firefox 1.5 although nice, only featured a small bit of under the hood speed upgrades and a slight more 'winxp interface' look. Other than that, I didn't notice too much new stuff. I hope they get their versioning straitened out and actually start implementing more security and functionality rather than devoting a whole new version to a small feature. If you know what I mean. - Dingle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0OMG!
- bradmoreland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Needs more Pornzilla features.
- incognegro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"OMFG F1X TEH MEM0RY LE4K!!"

IIRC, Firefox 1.5 was released shortly after the one-year anniversary of the release of 1.0 (its original version number was 1.1, but they felt that with all the changes the increment was too small, and I think they were shooting for release on the anniversary but instead delayed a few days in case of show stopping bugs in RC3), and 1.5.0.1 (which amounts to more or less a bug-fix update to 1.5, hence the small incrementation) was released just a few weeks ago. Also, this Firefox 2.0 release is an alpha - that means just outside of the trunk builds, proof of concept, don't expect the actual release any time soon, expect to file plenty of bug reports, etc.
The release schedule has been on the Wiki for some time now, too - though it is realistic to expect it to fall behind. Also, for an app that was designed to be streamlined out of the box and modular so you can add functionality as you choose, I don't see what people are really expecting from the next few versions - I'm more than happy with Firefox's feature set, so innovation in added functionality will be coming from extensions developers more than anybody, not the Firefox team directly. - Coreguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0w00t
big news....hope for a big improvement - KoZo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01. Better memory management
2. Hope FF will not crash when I try to cancel multiple downloads - pupa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2JPEG2000 support PLEASE
- mozmale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's the big deal? There's new builds every day in the "Trunk" folders at FTP mirrors.
The most obvious change is that Javascript is much faster.
For those needing to up the maxVersion of an extension, see http://tinyurl.com/al34y - spyhunter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whoa, that's a mighty aggressive release schedule there. No way that's holding up. I predict Firefox 2 is not out before December.
- MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Many useful extensions still don't work in 1.5 (Show Java Console for example). Prepare for further extension breakage in 2.0.
- Xsecrets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Actually the changes in 2.0 are not really that astounding, UI changes mostly, security and bug fixes. 3.0 however is where it's at, It's due to be released a couple months after 2.0"
That's great. So some time next year Firefox should finally catch up to Internet Explorer's 7.0. *rimshot*
so basically they will arrive at the same time? - vfwlkr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Since the lockdown didnt happen, its doubtful that there'll be a release this friday.
- elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@npacheco
google "grapple brushed" -- install it. uses native safari widgets in firefox. very clean. should be the default theme... - Denjira, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I just switched to Opera =)
- NoMoreNicksLeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@greenalien
Supposedly the switch to cairo should make zoom possible, not to mention all sorts of other weird things, like pdf conversion.
As for all you people that are dissing 1.5, it's biggest feature was default SVG which kicks ass in so many ways it's hard to describe. No one's using it yet though. (My website does) - flipper5311, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hope they fix memory leaks prob
- xodex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I wonder if this release is a responce to Opera's release this week at labs.opera.com :)?
- sproutworks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For those of you with problems with extensions not working after upgrades, check out the Nightly Tester Tools extension. It lets you force any extension to work with any version of Firefox.
- vfwlkr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0again - this is from a wiki where draft plans live. This is not from an official mozilla announcement, so its pretty much guaranteed that there's no release on friday.
- dasch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Firefox 2.0 uses almost the same version of Gecko as Firefox 1.5 does - I think it's 1.8.1, while FF 1.5 used 1.8.0. Firefox 3 will use Gecko 1.9.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They should name 2.5 or 3.0 Terra Nova or Gros Morne :D
- arvindn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great news! What I would like is a fix for the disappearing cursor in AJAX-friendly apps
- troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want I want I want....... to have no memory leaks Pretty please with a cherry on top
- jinexile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"That's great. So some time next year Firefox should finally catch up to Internet Explorer's 7.0. *rimshot*
so basically they will arrive at the same time?"
Lol IE7 hasn't even caught up to Firefox 0.9. IE7 basically fixes a couple CSS bugs, PNG Tranparency (for which I am eternally grateful) and adds native support for XMLHTTPRequest and some eye candy in the UI (which for the most part is ugly as sin.) It's a far cry from being something competitive to Firefox. - jinexile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Troy Firefox 2 has already fixed at least 10 memory leaks above and beyond 1.5.0.1
- Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As much as I enjoy using Firefox, I'll steer clear of Alpha releases. Usually nothing more than major headaches until it gets to beta.
- elfguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a link to a draft page, a plan that was made long ago, and as with everything, this will be delayed for sure.
- midorigin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What's the point in digging something just before it's released then digging it again just after? It's like we run automatic DUPES every time something expected happens, and most people seem to think it's acceptable to do that, despite our objection to nearly every other duplicate. What makes these ones any better?
- RyanJones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1More Mastertech spam has been spotted so I'll post this again.
