- anotherjesse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15If you are referring to the (HORRIBLE) Flock memory leak, we fixed it, and are excited to get it in peoples hands soon ( blog entry about it - http://flock.com/node/7209 )
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Maybe if you would have included what you use personally and why you think Firefox has a "nutscrape codebase" people would be less harsh. Are you an Opera fan? I.E.? Safari? Konqueror? What do you use? I can think of downfalls for just about every browser, but after testing out a large majority of the mainstream ones, I've always come back to Firefox.
- kettlechips, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16No, you have serious Vista issues
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12beta 2 was really good. Not many innovations but plenty of minor adjustment that make surfing the Internet faster and more enjoyable. Can't wait for the RC.
- mvprj84, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"Fixing the Firefox memory leak, which does exist, is currently scheduled for 3.0. "
You make it sound like one memory leak. There have already been several memory leaks fixed for Firefox 2.0 and yes, there are several more scheduled for Firefox 3.0 - aussiebuddha, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Ooops
If i was a psychic and could tell the future I'd say you'll be modded down.
here ya go -1 from me. - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I'm excited for 2.0 also, but I'm also a bit worried. A few of my favorite extensions still aren't working with 2.0 (even with the Max Version changed). Some of the developers, the extension 'MenuX' comes to mind, have even said that they're not going to be releasing a 2.0-compatible version.
If I have to choose between 1.5 and my current set of extensions and 2.0 with a few key extensions missing, I'm going to have to stick with 1.5. There's really nothing hugely compelling about 2.0, just a few visual things, and menu reworking. For the non-working extensions, I'd crack 'em open myself and make them work if I could, but I'm not quite good enough with JavaScript to know what needs to be changed for 2.0. - webwormx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Anyone have a changelog?
- JewFro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3what are the updates for .7?
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yeah, I'll be the first to admit that Firefox has some problems. It's not even close to being perfect, but definitely the best thing out there for me, and for many others.
Opera is great. Ashamed as I am to admit it, IE7 is actually pretty good, too (though we still have to wait to see if it's a security disaster like IE6 was, though I personally don't think it will be). They're each even better than Firefox in certain areas, but Firefox (extensions) offer a lot of features that no other browser can match.
Flock is just a different animal entirely. I've never used it, and I never will, but it's not meant for me. If I was a Blogger/Flickr-jockey that managed all of my bookmarks in Delicious, I'd probably love it. They're not trying to be the "everyman" browser, they're trying to cater to the so-called Web 2.0 types. They will be very successful, I have no doubt, but I'm sticking with Firefox. - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The x.x.x.#'s are basically just security updates. This should probably fall into that category. Certainly no new features, and probably no real perceptible change.
- zoxed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3> why you think Firefox has a "nutscrape codebase"
A reference to it's origins as Netscape.
> Are you an Opera fan? I.E.? Safari? Konqueror?
No: first and foremost he's a troll. - csshyamsundar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1direct link: http://ftp-mozilla.netscape.com/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/1.5.0.7/win32/en-US/Firefox%20Setup%201.5.0.7.exe
- Godel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've never had that happen. I don't have sage though.
- NoobieDoobieDo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hah .. after about 1 hr or less of browsing firefox tends to use about 130 MB of RAM..
Good times, good times.
Opera is the way to go - but it doesn't render all pages in a visually pleasing way.
And there are still A LOT of pages that ONLY work in IE (even though they dont say so) like the web site my girlfriend uses to pay her electric bill. The Next button ONLY works in IE.
Tisk tisk. - souletr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They didn't update the page yet, but the link works. http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-1.5.0.7&os=win&lang=en-US
- richbradshaw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I've never had any problems with memory leaks in Firefox - most memory it ever uses is about 60MB
- Smiff2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why are people digging down comments that describe bugs (that the digger just hasn't seen)? is this firefox fanboys, general ignorance, poor moderation, or what? it's not good.
the search sometimes not working is real, i have seen it and i don't have Sage. unfortunately i can't reliably recreate it yet.
many of the memory leaks are real and i have to restart firefox several times a day (i have 1GB of RAM and use the web a lot)
just about all the bugs you regularly see described are real, people don't make them up for fun or to spite firefox, it just depends how you use the software and how observant you are which you see.
like any complex software, firefox has bugs, and denying them or not finding them won't help them be fixed. just be glad they don't all affect you!
having said that, i use Firefox as my main browser because it's the the least imperfect of all of them *for me*.
or to put in geek speak:
"Never seen that happen" != "person is lying, mod him down!" - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9Fixing the Firefox memory leak, which does exist, is currently scheduled for 3.0.
I still can't believe that people claim there's no memory leak. I have Firefox on 10 different machines, some with, some without extensions, and they it leaks memory on all of them. If I browse all day, and then I close all my tabs, and Firefox is still using 300 MBs, that's a problem.
All you need to do is restart it once every day or two, which isn't a problem with SessionSaver, but it's still a pain in the ass when you're in the middle of something, and it just craps out. - aussiebuddha, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4@fac3less
ahh, and i forgot.
Netscape died because of Microsoft and Ie.
people chose the convenience of having IE already there than having to download another browser, not because netscape was not good.
I do accept however that the later versions of netscape were just too bloated for my liking.
Now firefox is one of the safest and more stable browser out there, and i wouldnt touch IE with a stick from 2mtrs away. how do you have the nerve to comment negatively about firefox?
you might not like it, but you can't say its crap, its a wonderful product that has revolutionized the safety in which we browse.
PS: I'm not a mozilla fanboy but in my opinion they're the best browsers. - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"but I just can't get myself to like the UI or layout of Opera"
OK, so you tell me what's wrong with this layout compared to e.g. Firefox's default UI: http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/4899/opera901uimi5.png
Opera toolbars are actually customizable, is preserved between all Opera upgrades. I'm so tired of hearing this argument.
To get the tabs below address bar (seems to be a common complaint), just put your buttons and address boxes on the main toolbar, turn off text, and turn off address bar. Also turn off other toolbars you don't like of course, if any are on. :-p - a99tandem, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3As of late.. FF has been giving me all sorts of issues. Any time I leave a sit that has Flash on it.. the entire browser crashes.. anyone else having this issue? Any ideas?
IE7 is my second choice even though I have Opera.. but I just can't get myself to like the UI or layout of Opera.. just a personal caveat. - galador, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't think they've posted the update list yet, but I would assume that it would be at http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/releases/1.5.0.7.html when it's released.
- bombadil78, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i love firefox, but why has it started to suck, granted not near as suckie as ie, but the popups are getting really bad, even using a popup extension on top of firefox...how can we stay ahead of the advertisers?
- JimW311, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Firefox doesn't for the most part leak memory. The reason it still shows all that memory used up with no tabs open; is because it holds several pages of each tab in memory. Should you want to revisit those web pages later and open a tab. It will recall the website faster. I don't agree with that on the program, but they are reworking the memory footprint in 3.0. But if you really don't like that, you can always go back to IE. Firefox for the win.
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Are you trying to get modded down? shame on you
- Hellfire51, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I use Sage, and although I now use beta 2, I also used it on 1.5.0.6 and I had no such problem. Maybe time to upgrade to beta 2 or RC1.
- JEmerson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0The trunk builds are where the real action is if you're a linux user. The speed gains when tweaked for xgl/compiz are insane. It's actually faster than on windows for the first time that I can recall.
- kelson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1@MikeCerm: The issue with "the memory leak" is complicated. First, it's not "a" memory leak so much as a whole bunch of little ones that sorta nickel-and-dime you. The effect is also very behavior-dependent. If you don't make a habit of leaving stuff running overnight, you don't see it, and so you start wondering what the heck people are talking about when they say that Firefox is using more memory than you have. And then there's the question of leaks in extensions.
Finally, there was a post by... Ben Goodger?... earlier this year in which he tried to dispel confusion over memory usage by pointing out that the back/forward cache in Firefox 1.5 probably outweighs any actual memory leaks... which promptly got interpreted as "Firefox has no leaks" by fanboys and "It's not a bug, it's a feature!" by critics.
So you get the "I've never seen a memory leak" crowd and the "Mozilla said there wasn't a memory leak" crowd together, and people start thinking there isn't a leak. - NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Does anyone else have an occasional search problem with 1.5.0.6?
Might be related to the open RSS reader (sage), but sometimes the search function refuses to work, the browser must be restarted. That and sometimes digg goes bust and keeps logging out until cookies are wiped, which doesn't seem to happen in IE. I'm curious to know if Beta 2.0 has those problems for the people aware of them. - mississippiman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1i like FF, really i do. As a matter of fact i'm using it now. But, IE does load faster, and run a little faster (till it gets bogged down with pretty much anything) But all said i gotta go wtih firefox (except on my cell phone... minimo just doesn't wanna work)
- Action123, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Flock Sucks!
- Chmura, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1september 19th
thats my birthday - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -19/+2I have serious firefox issues with Vista RC1 :(
- jblade, on 10/12/2007, -26/+8Wish they would fix the memory leak.
- fac3less, on 10/12/2007, -53/+3I despise both flock/firefox.
Why anyone (flock) would choose to develop on top of such a ***** browser I'll never be able to comprehend.
The same applies to Firefox and the nutscrape codebase.

What is Digg?
The Digg Toolbar for Firefox lets you Digg, submit content, and keep track of Digg even when you're not on the Digg site. Download the official
