I understand your point; it still leaks on your system.
But from a programmer's point of view, "the memory Leak" is actually probably dozens of memory leaks, with differing levels of severity, and triggered by different mechanisms. Unfortunately, what leaks for you may not leak for someone else, which makes these things difficult to debug. Many of these leaks were fixed in this release; unfortunately, it seems like you're getting bit by one of the really difficult to track down ones.
Not that this is an excuse for a leaky firefox; but it does explain why these things seem to persist. - Uriah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can't wait for the portable version. Even with the memory leaks and exploits, it's still 100x better than IE, IE7 inclusive.
- MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For everyone that says Tab X doesn't work anymore, there's a fix. Download the Tab X xpi. Rename the extension from .xpi to .zip. Open the zip file and open install.rtf in Notepad. Find the part that says "1.5" and change the "1.5" to "1.5.0.1". It's so amzingly simple it's retarded that something like that got overlooked by the extension developer. I did this and Tab X works fine for me now.

- nxxm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1also works through the 1.5 smartupdate builtin method, to download smaller incremental diff-updates to get newer product versions.
good job mozilla team. - TheRepublic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had the same problem when loading flash in firefox... then i solved it by lowering the cache in about:config to something like 1k since by default it was set to 500k. Loaded a flash intensive page like metropolisdowntown.com and it no longer slowed "at all" when playing the flash animations.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seems better.
I have around 6 tabs open and I'm at 85,000k. It used to be 95,000k.
Now it's at 100,000k. It would normally be at 120,000k.
It's now at 130,000k.... - nightfly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>For everyone that says Tab X doesn't work anymore, there's a fix. Download >the >Tab X xpi. Rename the extension from .xpi to .zip. Excellent advice however setting the version to 1.5.0.* would be better and is what the extension developers have been advised to do as well. Unfortunately they may have not all followed this advice. This way the extension will be compatible with any future security updates of the 1.5 branch, such as if there should be a 1.5.0.2 release. Any extension that worked with 1.5 should work with all future security releases of the 1.5 branch as there are not supposed to be any major API changes in these type of updates. - clemonator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great now I get to play the game of 'does my extension work?' again... Still haven't got half them back since upgrading from 1.0 to 1.5 -- I guess that's what happens when you go "bleeding edge" although my updates were more security and stability. Anyone know if they are going to develop a unified method of updating that doesn't kill almost all the extensions? this is a serious flaw (IMHO) in keeping up to date with security and stability. Hmmm...
- toe_head2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What, no torrent yet at http://bittorrent.mozilla.org/
- extant59, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its cool.. but now my tab-x plugin doesnt work. /sad face
- Patrick_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IMO, the mozilla/open source dev-team who worked on FF 1.5 made a release too early. A lot of problems with 1.5, I just got 1.5.0.1 last night, and I have yet to test for problems. With 1.5, _so_ many websites wouldn't even display (that would in previous FF versions). Also, FF is still quite slow when switching from tab to tab, when the pages you switch from/to are still loading. Also, I've had some crashing problems, and problems where FF wouldn't even crash, but I'd close it, try to load it again later, and it said "Firefox is still running..." so I'd have to kill the process.
If only I knew C++... after I'm experienced enough in C, I'll move to learning C++, and I can't wait to help out on the development of FF. - Legion303, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Works fine here. People concerned about extension compatibility have two options: download the extension installer .jar, unpack it (it's a zip file) and add the new version info yourself (I don't remember the file name offhand, but google is your friend), or get the MR Tech extension, right-click disabled extensions, and "force compatible".
- philmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really like the fact that they will tell you what extensions will not work once the upgrade is installed. It helps me make a decision to upgrade or not to upgrade. I love FF because of the extensions and its customizability.
- PvUtrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0memmory still leaking :(
- Stilzel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Smoothwheel extension doesn't work. :-(
- poops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0finally. this is the first update that auto-update worked for me.
- lvscar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gecko 20060124
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Auto-update told me about this one. No extension problems here.
- kamot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One site doesn't like the new release
http://www.businessweek.com/
Can't even read parts of it. - ender52, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"incompatible with Tab X"
just get Tab Mix Plus anyway... gives you a ridiculous amount of tab options (including the X button on each tab) - gotkilled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is a lot faster, no big memory leaks so far over 200mg
- besouza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0still don't work...
- KoZo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's under 100mg here
- Malakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you're having memory leak problems try a fresh Firefox profile, here are some simple instructions for Windows.
- You may want to start by making a list of your extensions or saving them all into a folder.
- Close firefox and make sure it's closed.
- Rename your Firefox profile folder to Firefox-old or something. Note that "application data" is a hidden folder.
C:Documents and Settings[user name]Application DataMozillaFirefox
- Uninstall Firefox and delete the program folder.
C:Program FilesMozilla Firefox
Install the latest version of Firefox. Then import your bookmarks file from the renamed profile directory.
I suggest testing it out a bit before you install any extensions to see if the problem is gone.
If this doesn't help and you just want to go back to how it was you can just rename the new profile folder and then rename the old one back.
Hopefully this helps some people. - abbott75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hold down Ctrl+T for... a long time...
- JAKL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Still likes to randomly crash whenever I try to check GMail and memory running at 190MB. But it does seem to load and browse faster.
- MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0version 1.0.6 is still the best version of this browser.
- raulb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This worked for me. Type about:config in a browser window and look for this setting browser.session.max_total_viewers. Change it to anything between 1-8, 8 works for me. Also the adblock extension was causing firefox to use too much memory on my system. Before firefox would shoot to 150mb-260mb. Now it barely exceeds 90mb. Hope this is useful.
- truebullfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hopefully the bookmarkers wont lock like they did w/ 1.5
- Rhine23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0carlf thanks for the the heads up forgot about checking for extension updates
- Paradox183, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've still got the leak after upgrading. After browsing for the while, Firefox was using 300MB.
I can't say I really care anymore though, since I just upgraded my computer to 2GB RAM. - abbott75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had 1.5.0.1 for a while now... how long ago was it released?
And for people saying OMGWTFBBQ111111! 1.5.0.1 dosn't support *extention*, it is *extention* that donsn't support 1.5.0.1, not the other way around. - bossm4n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems faster on it's own, but it hoses some extensions.
- tbone2day, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Guys.....Forecastfox=memory leak.....It's not firefox, it's extensions.
Unistall forecast fox and your memory problems are solved - TechNY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dos not work with Aol Web mail
- SG-1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"International Domain Name support for Iceland (.is) is now enabled."
What does that means ? - ecchichuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I will wait to update. My very important Moji extension isn't compatible yet.
- cbrack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0constant updates and fixes... i love the mozilla team. firefox is such a damn good application, and its free, which is even better.
go mozilla! - tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just did a fresh install of XP. I installed Firefox 1.5 then updated, it's using 25 MB, not bad, but it's defintely because of XP.
- steved3298, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@dismorfo
Wierd, All the moo.fx effects seem to work for me. - frozendice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet! I just upgraded to 768mb of memory in my laptop and now FF doesn't have AS horrible memory leaks. My browsing experience is flying by.
- dismorfo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ my iBook Firefoz 1.5.0.1 now has this error :
unrecognized command line flag -psn_0_4980737
@ nsBrowserContentHandler.js
line: Components.utils.reportError("Warning: unrecognized command line flag " + curarg + "n"); - Chimichanga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Adblock + filterset, image zoom, foxy tunes, greasemonkey, tab mix plus, bugmenot, and fasterfox are all working if you bothered to hit update extensions every so often. To me at least, extensions not working isn't as big of a problem as people make it out to be. For most things that aren't kept up to date, there are reasonable alternatives (I had a problem with 1.0.7 and whatever tab extension I was using at the time, switched to mix plus and it works just as well).
- bossm4n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"International Domain Name support for Iceland (.is) is now enabled."
Thank God. I can sleep now. - VoodooRock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I do realize that it's based on Firefox and all that, but Flock is quite nice. Renders quickly and no problems that I can think of. It uses about the same amount of resources that FF does, maybe a little less. Good stuff all around.
- ytsebadd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm quite impressed to see my FF upgrade itself as I've asked it to do. It did require a restart of the app...but very smooth upgrade.
- carlf., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FoxyTunes 1.2 works just fine with Firefox 1.5 and 1.5.0.1.
- billbradford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mac OSX/Intel build can be found here:
