Figure out why an application hangs
news.com — Most of these mystery freezes are uncommon and specific to a particular PC configuration, such as the driver for a certain model printer conflicting with a recent Windows security update, causing some functions in Windows Explorer to stop working (an instance described in a recent Microsoft knowledgebase article).

Apparently the Vista and Linux machines did not cave in yet. I suspect it is more of a Mac OS problem than the Macbook Air - bitweever, on 03/28/2008, -0/+4Actually, I [apple fanboy] was hoping to find what to do when either Firefox or Safari hangs on my PowerBook.
- bosssmiley, on 03/28/2008, -2/+3Sheer damn laziness 90% of the time. Skiving, work-shy bludging applications!
- Jovensdesciple, on 03/28/2008, -27/+2I wonder why my ***** hangs, whats the whole deal with gravity? Figure that ***** out shirlock. And stop blaming Jack for ***** you don't understand.
- cygnus2112, on 03/28/2008, -0/+15Less drugs, more books.
- Jovensdesciple, on 03/28/2008, -17/+2hahahhaha, i do more drugs AND read more books than you. Don't pretend you're something you're not. It makes you seem even lamer than you are in reality. But you are waayyy smarter than most diggers.
- cygnus2112, on 03/28/2008, -0/+15Less drugs, more books.
- DMCer, on 03/28/2008, -7/+3"conflicting with a recent Windows security update, causing some functions in Windows Explorer to stop working (an instance described in a recent Microsoft knowledgebase article)"
Also known as a bad user experience. - mastameezy, on 03/28/2008, -18/+3***** WINDOWS.
- cygnus2112, on 03/28/2008, -0/+69#1 Reason my Firefox application hangs: Digg.com
- sadilak, on 03/28/2008, -0/+6Not just firefox, most of the browsers. DIgg seriously needs to make the comments system load faster. I dont understand whats the big deal in loading a bunch of text.
- mcherm, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3So it's not just me? I often get complete freezes (ie, won't repaint the screen, wait 45 minutes and it's still frozen, have to kill the process) and they ONLY happen when I'm navigating digg in more than one tab. It's clearly a Firefox bug (even a malicious site shouldn't be able to freeze the browser) but digg is clearly the source of the problem.
- jeffkee, on 03/28/2008, -1/+8I simply came to the acceptance that all computers have pros and cons anyhow, just gotta live with it, and expect the competitive market to drive towards better and faster products. No point in blaming Gates or Jobs or anybody really - doesn't get you anywhere but angry.
You don't see the REAL big business people always complaining about how much computers suck - they just make the best of it. It's some how all the IT nerds making $60,000 or less that complain the most, even though their time is much less valuable than the CEO of some larger company who just lives with the fact that his computer sometimes lags.- mastameezy, on 03/28/2008, -1/+5The rich guys have better things to do with all that money than hang out on forums and digg.
- Icyfenix, on 03/28/2008, -2/+2Marry me.
- yahoofrom, on 03/28/2008, -1/+1Marry Chrismas
- freethrowtommy, on 03/28/2008, -1/+2Amen Brother. Dugg for insight.
- RationalXubrnce, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2Well if you ever get the opportunity to work for one of these rich guys you will indeed see them complaining about it, they just don't post it on forums. At least as far as we know.
- bradleyland, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3"You don't see the REAL big business people always complaining about how much computers suck..."
How many "REAL big business people" have you worked for? Every one I consult for constantly bitches about their computer.
- phpchris, on 03/28/2008, -1/+6Anyone else had a problem with Firefox where for no reason at all while it begins to load a page it just 'stops' loading, it still looks like its trying to load the page but absolutely nothing is happening, either waiting for a stupid amount of time for it to eventually load or restarting Firefox seems to be the only solution. I've noticed it happens quite frequently on certain sites mainly Ebay. I've tried disabling/removing all extensions, even completely re-installing it, to no avail :(
- liquidpele, on 03/28/2008, -1/+1Sometimes that happens when trying to load ads on a site, and the ad server is down so it just churns away until it times out.
Try adblock plus and a list subscription like filterset G if you don't already have them. Otherwise, best to wait for FF3.- phpchris, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3I'm using FF3B4 with adblock plus installed, I thought maybe it was adblock that was causing it so I removed it, still does the same thing. I can't seem to re-create the problem when I want to, it just randomly happens. Baffling :/
- liquidpele, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1That's weird as hell. :(

- anandg, on 03/28/2008, -1/+0What I even find more interesting is how to prevent your computer from crashing. Also if the program that is hanging contains important unsaved information you want to save it before it's gone. This article explains how to accomplish this by using the Process Explorer:

- Icyfenix, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3I worked at geek squad when they had a problem code for this.
- liquidpele, on 03/28/2008, -0/+19This is the most worthless article ever.
No info on how to diagnose, no using event viewer, drwtsn32, or viewing dump files. No, all you need to do is run memtest86, upgrade your video driver, and unload plugins from IE/Firefox! Who knew it was so simple? Perhaps this is fine for the "power user" crowd, but it's hardly anything new or even interesting. Buried.- lytan, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2Agreed, though I found the linked article on registry keys useful.
- liquidpele, on 03/28/2008, -0/+0couldn't find the link you mention. Can you post it?
- lytan, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2Agreed, though I found the linked article on registry keys useful.
- YamiJim, on 03/28/2008, -1/+6bs on this, it's all VERY common sense.

http://www.ubuntu.com/ - uncouthyouth, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2I had to use the extension trial and error method last week when Firefox would continually hang on facebook. Too many scripts running at once I guess. Now to figure out why OpenOffice periodically hangs... (don't say "because openoffice sucks", it is a wonderful piece of free software.)
- zongamin, on 03/28/2008, -4/+1DIE!

http://www.smartcomputing.com/images/smartcomputin ... - roberto_deneero, on 03/28/2008, -8/+2It's obvious, Windows just sucks. www.apple.com/store
- fizzak, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2Wow, I was hopeing for some tips on why apps freeze on our Macs everyday.
- patm1987, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Obviously the application hangs because someone forgot to check the windproc. The key to improving this is just to force a processing of the event stack in the middle of intensive calculations, that or you could perform your intensive calculations in a separate thread or in a cli that won't hang if you forget to give windows its happy moment.
Of course the answer to the consumer's side of the problem is that the application lost some of its magic smoke and that it needs some time to gather it back up.
Now what really confuses me is the article is titled "Figure out why an application hangs" and it seems to talk about "Figure out why my computer just crashed," and then arbitrarily starts talking about how to cut down on plugins and such after talking about driver crashes and error codes. - nickbatell, on 05/03/2008, -0/+0Take a look at another great post that tackles the freezes of enterprise applications. Same problems, different environment... http://www.correlsense.com/cto-blog/top-3-reasons- ...
