- WinGeek, on 10/15/2008, -3/+34Why would the quality go down?
- Bronstone, on 10/12/2007, -18/+42Wow, did you forget to take your pills this morning? RC2 will be better than RC1. Whether or not is will be better than OS X Leopard remains to be seen.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23more weeping and gnashing of teeth on a release candidate OS.
- falcon1, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25Its not a beta anymore.
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18"Don't you mean Windows XP SP4?"
Windows XP is Windows 5.1. Vista is Windows 6.0.
Incidentally, Windows Server 2003 is WIndows 5.2. Server 2003 FTW! - Footstick, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18I'm not sure what you're trying to do here, but I think you may have failed.
- dAbReAkA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+135728 is far better than 5600.. looks like final to me.. no crashes, no BSODs, no slowdowns..
there's no way RC2 could be worse than any previous release..
waiting for it.. - lcohiomatty86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13vista is deffinatly ready for full time use (not as in to be sold.. but if people want to use it as a primary OS they can).. however at least in my experience with one of the post-RC1 builds.. several fairly important software programs didn't work properly (novell groupwise.. VLC player.. etc) so i had to revert back to XP.. but in general vista is a big improvement over XP espescially in regards to making networking alot more grandma friendly
- BeachSide, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16"I mean, look at Windows 98 and Windows ME... both clearly better than windows 95"
Damn you!!! Damn you for making me choke on my drink in astonishment!!!

} - dirka, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Did I hear Windows ME and the word "better" in the same sentence!!! My life is complete now.
- byronm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Look forward to the release. A few of my bugs will be fixed with some mp3 id3 tags causing headaches on the 360 extender, some network issues with nvidia nforce chipsets and a few other things.
Been using vista as my primary os since about June and haven't looked back and i look forward to imminent release of the RTM product. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Something to think about when looking at Vista isn't necessarily being wowed by the OS itself, but the platform it leverages for new applications to take advantage of. So you may be saying to yourself that Vista has done nothing to really impress you, and it might not, but you have to keep in mind that there really aren't any applications that are out yet to take advantage of the new platform. To really get a sense of Vista you need to look beyond the OS itself, and see if a new breed of applications that take advantage of the OS are worth it. That is the true mark of a successful Operating System. Whether Vista will be remains to be seen.
- UnglueD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Good thing installing RC2 from RC1 will store all my needed data in the Windows.old folder, which should make the switch a little less painless

Don't forget Longhorn Server which is 6.1. This kernel will move into Vista with the first service pack. This will be the first time MS has ever replaced the kernel in a service pack. - tagnarth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Ha.. I just finally burned my RC1 disk yesterday.. was going to install tonight. Guess I should wait.
- herrshuster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11And so is your spelling!
- Alegis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I have no problems at all with 5600. Yet going to install 5728 (almost downloaded).
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Definetly. Everything on my laptop except for the SD-card slot worked without me having to find any drivers in 5728. I had to go searching with 5600...
If only they could make the File copy dialog give a more accurate time reading, and if ATI would release OpenGL drivers, I'd be set. - inturnaround, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7So because you don't know it to be true or not, you're saying it isn't? Isn't that inaccurate? If MS denies it or Friday comes and goes without a RC2, then the inaccurate tag is fair. Otherwise, that's premature.
- SystmBetatester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6ive been using vista as my MAIN OS since pre-RC1 and have updated it accordingly, sicne its my main one ive had to test out alot of my power pc user programs.
VLC does work although it makes aero a bit whacky, daemon tools works so you can run virtual cd's.
the only real problem ive found is that apple software, itunes and quicktime are massive memory hogs and if i force em to do to much like syncing my ipod, adding large libraries converting, vista will ultimatly crash. oh and for some reason wmp wont stream media in firefox rc1 :(
ive yet to try 5728 although i do have it, i just wanna be able to update to rc2 later sicne ms gave a warning about it : - omatsei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7VLC didn't work? Granted, the one quirk is that for video playback has to be set to "Windows GDI" (I think... maybe DirectX, but don't quote me), otherwise it'll pop it back into the classic interface with no transparency, but it works just fine, and has for months for me.
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah but past versions of Windows weren't beta tested so extensively with millions of public downloads and all that. The bug counts will obviously shoot up when its released to the masses but its going to be a lot better than past releases.
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah 5728 fixed a BSOD when unplugging power from my laptop which was the last issue I had with running Vista.
- kalisphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm willing to bet that Microsoft knows by now that they have far more than 1400 bugs. And the PC using world will surely come up with another ten thousand or so.
(Nothing against Microsoft -- it's humanly impossible to write a perfectly-coded OS) - byronm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ frankthechicken
Vista comes with media center built in on the Ultimate and Premium editions. Just plug your 360 on the network, make sure vista is set to "home" on the network and you should see the 360 popup and you can run the MCE wizard to get it online and activated. - DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's a stupid argument. It runs Maya fine and its the most complex application on the planet. It's far more likely VLC is another poorly written program that somehow manages to break itself on a new OS release.
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"That documentation also notes that there are over 1400 open bugs in Vista at this time. Microsoft's internal processes require this bug count to drop to 500 or fewer before they will attempt to go into escrow for RTM. By comparison, there were over 2479 bugs on September 22. "
That's a really low bug count for RTM. I remember all the hype about XP shipping with thousands of bugs. Most bugs aren't critical problems but things like branding issues, performance, or small UI problems. - edosmund, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yes, you can. As of Boot Camp 1.1.1.
- m00nmaster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"This will be the first time MS has ever replaced the kernel in a service pack."
Will that require a reboot?
To webcrumb: Those are NT numbers. - Alegis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6This is strange, they usually ask to complete a survey to receive physical media of windows vista. Unless he meant they'll send that survey to my inbox friday.
- byronm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ lcohiomatty86
I don't use the prgrams you do, so i can't comment on what does/doesn't work on those respects but for me the following work, so i work!
Oracle Client 10gR2, Toad, Oracle Developer, JRE, Eclipse IDE, Vistual Studio 2005, Visio, Office 2k3, Oracle Jinitiatior, Putty, Filezilla, Skype, Firefox, Gear DVD and most importantly Flight Simulator on my FS rig :) - spritom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I too finally got RC1 installed recently from one of the betas before. I had reinstalled a few of the beta versions before trying to work out some performance issues such as file transfers would take 5-20 times longer than they should have, emptying the recycle bin wanting to take forever, explorer not opening certain folders w/multimedia in them (window would freeze). But with RC1 (well, the post-RC1), I didn't experience any of that. The system seemed to be quite responsive. The eye-candy is pretty too. But beyond that, I'm not wowed by the OS and so far it hasn't done anything that I couldn't have done elsewhere (such as the Linux, BSD, and XP boxes next to it).
For reference, my Vista box = Athlon 3000 (32-bit), 1.5GB, GF5500
Guess I'll check out RC2 for kicks and see where it takes me. - byronm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Known problem with several network interfaces. Driver issue not necessarily vista itself :)
- VSLOATHE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The only trouble I've had with RC1 (64 bit edition, I'm a Microsoft Partner so I get all that crap sent out to my business in the mail) is that sometimes I can't hear the audio when playing videos on Youtube in Opera. That's about it.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, 5728 was a lot better than RC1, too, and It's like a couple weeks old already.
- cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A bug counts as anything from a misspelled word in a dialog, to a security feature that works perfectly, but is annoying to 90% of the people who use it.
also from the article:
"By comparison, there were over 2479 bugs on September 22. "
Which means they cleared 1079 bugs in just over one week. At that rate they could check in fixes for all the bugs they need to qualify for RTM status, and take two more weeks tweaking the OS, fix a couple hundred more bugs, and verify all the latest bug fixes, and still make it in before the deadline.
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2May I also remind you of bug #1 for Ubuntu? That's hardly an OS fault, yet still listed as a bug.
- GodsHand, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Can you install Vista through Boot Camp?
- neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i'm curious to try this release candidate if i have the chance...
i tried Beta 1... wasn't very impressed... but maybe it has come a long way since then - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I keep getting "Path not found" errors when trying to install programs in 5728... everything was fine in 5600. Very strange...
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Those are NT numbers."
Help, About Windows. Plus since Windows 2000, or NT 5.0, Windows has been Windows NT.
"Don't forget Longhorn Server which is 6.1."
Right. So I now know which version of Vista I want to be running. :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2might as well get this one, hopefully when the final release ships, we can update to it? Isnt that how it used to work? you were a beta tester basicly you got X version of windows for free?
- hankyone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2sighhhh... people don't read
mac fanboy? LOL i hate those things - proudcanadian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why are you people digging down anyone who says anything possibly negative? I am writing this comment from RC1 and let me tell you, it isn't perfect yet. Yes, it runs, and it is coming along very well. About what was said about RC2 not being as good a quality as RC1, yes, I believe that. RC1 actually went through extensive testing to make sure it was stable enough for most users. Since then, they have been releasing new builds with fixed bugs, and better performance. However, these new builds don't go through the extensive testing as RC1 did. Here is a quote from eweek, "That build will be made available to a limited group of between 50,000 and 100,000 testers in October, and follows the interim Vista build that Microsoft released on Sept. 22." Its just a final version before the main one is launched. Its not being made for the general public, there is no reason to go through the extensive testing of a RC.
And now finally, just to end my little post, a link to a Microsoft news group, that addresses this rumor.
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.vista.general&tid=7c68e034-04ee-41ed-ae3d-750bc2a53540&cat=&lang=en&cr=US&sloc=en-us&m=1&p=1 - dac74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just checked my MSDN subscription and it wasn't listed yet. Did anyone get a date they plan to release it. I would like to get a vm built and start testing.
- spritom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@dirka
I'm reminded of those immortal words of Dr. Peter Venkman, "Back off, man. I'm a scientist." :)
I'm not using my Vista box as a production box, but I try to use it often to get a feel for it and learn what I can from it, then report back to the beta team.
The multiple reinstalls were performed for different reasons, it's just experimentation:
* as new Vista versions came out
* if my experience from a specific version was crap and everybody else's was rosy, it might be considered that my specific install was crap...troubleshooting the current install or reinstalling.
* hardware/software (or one time codec) issues
* zombie issues
Complaining? Far from it. I figured I'd spend a little more time with RC1, but reinstalling isn't a big deal. - jdonner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Vista is ust a skinned XP with more "security" nag boxes.
Game Over, Microsoft "
Let me guess, your name is Fool v0.98 Alpa 3? - spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ok... well.....
