- MarkusX, on 12/16/2008, -13/+112So, Internet Explorer 8 is now faster in displaying websites incorrectly!
Is that really it, Microsoft? - mynameistux, on 12/17/2008, -10/+89friends don't let friends use IE.
- soopafly, on 12/17/2008, -7/+46And now we have 4 versions of IE to test on. Thanks Microsoft!!
- Sincerely
Web developers & designers from around the world - IIECONII, on 12/16/2008, -15/+53*Cough* firefox *Hack*
- richgustavson, on 12/17/2008, -4/+41I still don't understand how web standard compatibility is not the number one priority behind security.
- motang, on 12/16/2008, -12/+44It fails in Acid3 test...anyone surprised!
- kylejn, on 12/16/2008, -5/+35I still say that IE7 and, based on the beta, IE8 are far better than they should have been. Firefox, Opera, and the others still blow it out of the water, but it appears that the current IE team is actually making an effort to erase the mistakes the IE6 and earlier teams made.
- JoeJejune, on 12/16/2008, -17/+47IE is getting worse than better. Firefox rules!
- killdashnine, on 12/17/2008, -10/+37Please Microsoft, STOP MAKING BROWSERS. We have Mozilla, Opera, Chrome, or others which are many times better. We do not need an "integrated" option.
Thank god Wine continues to improve for Linux. Might have to switch for good. - 10goto10, on 12/16/2008, -5/+31Actually, it's still slow even at that.
- ElBeh, on 12/17/2008, -9/+31Still trash.
- inactive, on 12/17/2008, -0/+22And the latest build of Opera 10, I believe.
- tacotruck08, on 12/17/2008, -8/+27***** IE
- inactive, on 12/17/2008, -6/+25So does Firefox, what's your point?
- friday04, on 12/17/2008, -5/+21This is utterly disappointing. It's disappointing for so many reasons. IE7 only has an adoption rate of 50% which means I have to code for the crappy IE6 still. And now I have to code for the crappy IE6, the somewhat better but still non-standard IE7 and from the sound of it the just-as-non-standard IE8. This sucks so much. I really hate MS sometimes. They do things without thinking it seems. IE7 didn't solve the problem and now that it had such a short life I have 3 audiences using different flavors of IE. It's like I went back to the IE5, IE5.5, IE6 days. Damn it.
- inactive, on 12/17/2008, -0/+15You still test IE 5?
- ElBeh, on 12/17/2008, -5/+18So does every other current stable browser... what's /your/ point?
Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 is slated to pass 100/100 on Acid3, just as Safari 4 and Opera 10. There are currently no stable browsers out now that pass Acid3 completely. - Xizor227, on 12/17/2008, -3/+16Safari 4 Developer Preview socres a 100
- netneutrality, on 12/17/2008, -3/+15Perhaps we should start an online petition to ask Microsoft to stop making browsers. It wouldn't work directly, but it would be funny and it might get their attention. Come on Digg, I'm waiting.
- mistergoomba, on 12/17/2008, -1/+13FTA - "Facebook compatibility is a known issue"
good times - inactive, on 12/16/2008, -4/+15Interesting that they selectively pick benchmarks for Opera.... Because it beats FireFox in V8 too(3 out of 4 tests, with one of those 3 a near tie, but the remaining 2 score doubly that of FF).
- beingdevious, on 12/17/2008, -5/+1612/100 compared to 93/100, 70's/100, and so on..., ?
i think thats quite a leap. firefox, opera, and safari take the cake as always. :)
oh, wait. ie8 finally made it to 21/100
quick, everyone clap for the slow kid to make him feel better.
/sarcasm - norbiu, on 12/17/2008, -4/+14Unless they use it to download Firefox.
- chookalana, on 12/17/2008, -2/+12And we should care why? There are several browsers out there that are much better.
- ethana2, on 12/17/2008, -3/+13With IE, one version is too many.
- beingdevious, on 12/17/2008, -2/+12design & code for the future, not the past
stop babying users who are too afraid to upgrade. they will have to eventually.... - svivian, on 12/17/2008, -0/+9Acid 3 doesn't really test CSS that much, it's mainly a Javascript test. IE passes Acid2, which *is* a CSS test.
- mmockett, on 12/17/2008, -0/+9Because that would make it the number two priority.
- buddamus, on 12/17/2008, -1/+10I have never been impressed with IE, reading this article has not made me think different
- suntzusputnik, on 12/17/2008, -1/+10Still recycling bin.
- footfwd, on 12/17/2008, -5/+13I hate IE with every fiber of my being.
- Smills, on 12/17/2008, -2/+10Sweet, I am always open to new versions of Microsoft Firefox Downloader. More performance and security when downloading Firefox is never a bad thing.
- niczar, on 12/17/2008, -0/+7It's crazy that it's still not supporting XHTML. 10 years after the standard was published. It does HTML and XML, but not XHTML. That's just retarded.
- FasterGun, on 12/17/2008, -1/+8How do you test multiple versions of IE on one computer? Can you install more than one version? I never figured that out.
- jer2eydevil88, on 12/17/2008, -2/+9They need to drop legacy code support in both their browser and the operating system. Balmer needs to make them do what Apple did and build a big virtual machine for running older and outdated software. With regards to IE 8 they should just drop support for outdated and horrible web code (the stuff frontpage put out for starters) and work on improving the stuff that matters to developers (Javascript Performance, W3C Standards, SVG/Transparent PNG's, Support for CSS 3.0).
- inactive, on 12/17/2008, -3/+10Or Safari, or Opera, or Chrome, or Camino, or Konquer, ANYTHING but the blue E
- inactive, on 12/17/2008, -1/+8I wish Microsoft would use webkit for IE. It would make everything so much easier for everybody.
- mithrasinvictus, on 12/17/2008, -0/+7Their standards support is still horribly inadequate, but at least they seem to have stopped their policy of actively sabotaging the standards by implementing "alternative interpretations".
- netneutrality, on 12/17/2008, -1/+7I have IE6 on the outside and IE7 in a virtual machine. But it's not exactly as wonderful as Firefox Portable.
- sloppychris, on 12/17/2008, -4/+10FTA:
"IE8 RC1 scores 12/100 (the same as IE8 beta 2), which clearly will disappoint web designers and developers that heavily use CSS."
Mother *****!
I was hoping I'd get to stop lambasting IE for making my life a living hell, but that apparently isn't going to happen. - foxontherock, on 12/17/2008, -0/+6You can install Standalone versions of IE from this site http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/standalone BUT... they are not working in Vista ! if you use XP, you can test every IE version with those releases. Very useful for web Dev.
- prodigitalson, on 12/17/2008, -1/+7Because honestly, to the majority of end users it doesnt matter. It only matters to web devs/designers like myself, and some of the more geeky user base. Additionally there are legacy applications that have to be considered. MS is in the precarious position of "***** up" early, or in the unlicky position of standards coming to the party late. Thus those $100k intranet systems developed for IE5.5 many years ago arent going anywhere so they have to support legacy. This makes the task of standardization all that more difficult. Combine that with the fact that its jsut not a top priority and youve got your answer.
Furthermore, devs/designers are forced to accommodate IE because of its marketshare. Our clients dont let us say "***** IE"... we have to make it work.
It makes me wonder what would have been MS's party line if we as an industry had called out the cost of corss-browser compatibility from the beginning. - jer2eydevil88, on 12/17/2008, -0/+6You can't be serious about the four versions? I'm already moving away from supporting IE6 for my clients because so few people are using it. If a project renders mostly everything (85+%) then I'm happy enough with it, that said I hate Microsoft for not going all the way with standards support in IE 8.... Another broken promise *sniffle* *Sniffle*
- djclay, on 12/17/2008, -0/+5Does that mean my iPod has a 70% chance of using another iPod?
- tama00, on 12/17/2008, -1/+6Gamer kids.
- ElBeh, on 12/17/2008, -0/+4Why would Windows 7 be competition for Firefox or Chrome? One is an OS, two are browsers.
- Chakat, on 12/17/2008, -0/+4Yes, it does
- mithrasinvictus, on 12/17/2008, -0/+4Design your site for standards and make sure it is still functional without css and javascript. Then simply turn those off for unsupported browsers.
Everyone can use the site and visitors get an experience that fits the year their browser was made (2001 for IE6) - maximilen, on 12/17/2008, -1/+5Firefox: Get 'em!
