- jasondefaoite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Pile, regardless of who is saying it, it is the right question to be asking. How can MS contemplate charging end users for plugs to fix holes in their code? What's next, charging for service packs?
- ski081, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Goddamn brilliant!!
====================================================================
Vista – Won't Boot Edition… $29.95
Vista – Preloaded with Viruses and Spyware Edition… $39.95
Vista – Initially Clean but Use at Your Own Risk Edition… $49.95
Vista – Clean with Firewall and Weekly Protection Update Edition… $200
You get the idea. How about this for a concept: One Version that Works Edition.

How true. The Mac used a mouse and Gates forced it on the industry. I hate using a mouse and have learned virtually every shortcut key there is to know. - Gringo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2John C Dvorak for President!
I like Dvorak because of his "shoot from the hip" style of journalism. Sure you guys like to mention when his predictions were wrong but I think he has right just as many times,if not more.
Someone on TWIT mentioned this and Dvorak decided to follow up on it and write about.
So what is M$ going to do, do a .99 update thing similar to iTunes? M$ has an OBLIGATION to all the Windows users to fix their flawed product free of charge. - hawks5999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_C._Dvorak
Dvorak has been around since personal computing began. And while he has called some things wrong, he's seen and called more vapor-hype-marketing-ware than probably anybody reading this page. It's likely that Dvorak has forgotten more about the computer industry than many diggers will ever know. - nospam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Idiotic. NO OS can guarantee security."
What a ***** cop-out. Did you even read the article? Of course no OS can guarantee security but at least the OS can make a reasonable effort. You are clearly missing the point. Have you ever patched a production MS server and had to reboot the server so the registry could reload (even though the kernel was not affected by the patch). What intolerable crap is this? Why must downtime on the server be scheduled to accomodate bouncing the server when the patch did not touch the kernel? It is because of the registry doofus. In other words, a bad system design. If you read the article, you might have a better chance of grasping this concept. Why so many people continue to tolerate MS system achitecture is simply a mystery to me. - mjm.basher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great! Now people will be pirating the OS AND "patching" the patches!
- WikiTerra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2On the one hand it is ridiculous that MS is offering AVware, but on the other they ARE doing away with the registry in Vista.
But Dvorak squawks about this every month for the sake of just being heard. I'm not digging a limelight hog. - designbydave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2God Bless Dvorak!
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Instead of complaining about what microsoft is doin with it's new step in to security they should be appluded...either way it's a catch 22...if they do nothing they are scrutinized, if they do something they still are.
- neurokaotix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2FYI, Vista has been reprogrammed from the ground up to make it easier to add and remove features, relieve code bloat, and Microsoft's new code check program has been said to remove 90% or so of the common bugs found in their code. Vista will be a much leaner and meaner OS.
- DemiGuru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK. So this is weird. A few weeks ago I made a comment on Slashdot basically saying the same thing. Let me just fool myself into believing that I was able to inspire him
http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/01/11/1457206&tid=109
"...What's so called BRILLIANT is the fact that now Microsoft can actually profit from their OSs flaws i.e. not bother to fix all the ones that can prevent spyware from getting in to begin with.
If you want it taken care pay us an additional fee and you'll be "safe". Protection fee?" - projecktzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Vista has been reprogrammed from the ground up"
They said that about Windows 2000 and XP. From the gound up to them means, knocking all the building blocks down and putting them back together. No fixing the bug-ridden blocks or blocks with security holes in them. - anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1"Linux / OSX / etc are not that much more bug free. They certainly have some advantage, but the single largest advantage is their lack of market penetration. If OS X had windows marketshare.. you would be surprised how many bugs would come out of the woodwork."
Windows 65 million lines of spaghetti code
Linux 5 million lines of UNIX-like code
Mac 2.5 million lines of *BSD(real UNIX) and Aqua
that's all I'm going to say. - spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hawks5999: ditto.
he's a columnist for crying out loud. he's not the Fox news anchorman. he gets paid to do this. he has to have a voice, and a strong opinion, otherwise he wouldn't be making a living.
"Vista will be a much leaner and meaner OS." thats what they said about xp. while xp certainly is no me, there are still many faults, just ask dvorak. and for the record, i think dvorak is very entertaining, but there is still much truth in what he says. quite a character that dvorak is. - masterofshadows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2m4tt3r: yeah it is a spam but don't clutter up the page with complaining about spam. Just go over to that rate comment box and mark it as such.
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg - Dvorak rules OK!
This is more of the typical BS that comes out of Microsoft. It's like a power company selling insurance to the people in the towns downstream of its dams in case the dam fails - doesn't exactly fill you with a great deal of confidence does it! - WikiTerra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@hawks5999
You're right, I should be complaining about PCMag and the like also. PCMag isn't a computer magazine anyway, it's a shopping magazine.
Oh, and BTW, I found a nice quote of Dvorak's from his bio on wikipedia:
"The Macintosh uses an experimental pointing device called a 'mouse'. There is no evidence that people want to use these things." - San Francisco Examiner, Feb. 1984
Now THAT'S good entertainment! - Brereton55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+124 diggs and on the front page?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No OS can guarantee security.
- hawks5999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They beat Anti-Trust. I'm sure they'll get past RICO. But oh it would be so fun to watch that trial.
- Shogie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Umm, Dvorak made his tech bones a LONG time ago. And he's always been "in the ball park" with his columns. What I see here is a bunch of MS suck-ups carry their torch.
- vermin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol, he does have a point this time. But what's with his ridiculous anecdote; I left CuteFTP on, and somehow I got spyware!!1 lol
- min_t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Woz that 7 versions? I can't wait to see the MCSE requirements for la Vista. Can't they just make 2 versions, server and user. Just disable most of the services on the user version by default.
Just say no to extortion. - HackWithRamzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1neurokatoix said, "FYI, Vista has been reprogrammed from the ground up to make it easier to add and remove features, relieve code bloat, and Microsoft's new code check program has been said to remove 90% or so of the common bugs found in their code. Vista is based off of the Windows Server 2003 Codebase. It has in no way been "reprogrammed from the ground up." - Camman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh good another Dvorak article, like another commenter said above, he just runs his mouth every month or so on some issue which is really a non-issue. Let's point out the obvious here, I fail to see the conflict of interest, it's a different product, but yeah Microsoft is evil and is going to start charging for service pack like someone else suggested. wow.
- Dolemack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1kyle your late its been done.
- leonbev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Funny... I tried the Microsoft Vista beta for myself, and wasn't at all impressed. It seemed like little more than Windows XP with some new interface changes that they shamelessly ripped off of Mac OS X.
- ribes2002, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice to see Dvorak has finally seen the light. Wasn't that long ago when he was Apple's arch enemy.
- Chango_Family, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No-holds barred?
That's code for he doesnt think before he writes.
But he is entertaining on TWIT because he is the ONLY one who will have a different opinion than the others in the circle jerk and right or wrong, he sticks to his beliefs and makes it interesting. - kidlinux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Am I the only one who saw a conflict of interest and all the given implications as soon as Microsoft acquired an anti-virus/spyware company?
Hurray for Dvorak's article of the obvious. - neurokaotix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HackWithRamzi said, "Vista is based off of the Windows Server 2003 Codebase. It has in no way been "reprogrammed from the ground up.""
There was an article on this site about how it has been reprogrammed from the ground up. - iaskedTGT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"No OS can guarantee security"
Not even CrApple's. - hawks5999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1oh and teamparadox, he's not a journalist. he's a columnist. you would do well to learn the difference.
- spider-man, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1But he gets no spam!
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Shogie - I like how, if someone likes Microsoft, they are a suckup; but, if someone likes Linux, they are a computer genius. Go to ***** hell.
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Im pretty sick of Dvorak, he sprews crap all day long, 1/4 of it is true and everyone takes what he says as absolute fact. The guy has no clue about Vista yet he knocks it all day long. If he was a real journalist he would take a wait and see approach and then offer his opinion. He is basing everything off of XP which was really designed for a different time. When XP came out there wasnt a million script kiddies, now MS knows it has to put up or shut up and I think they will.
- Sazime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No.
- xdviper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i agree with him... why is there 7 version of vista where there could be only one or two that actually works... wtf is this with vista starter editon.... c'mon now..
- 3Den, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2We all love to bitch at MS for the lack of security.. and most of it is deserved, however:
What do you think writing a bug-free high security version of windows would cost MS? Do you think consumers and business are willing to pay that cost?
Linux / OSX / etc are not that much more bug free. They certainly have some advantage, but the single largest advantage is their lack of market penetration. If OS X had windows marketshare.. you would be surprised how many bugs would come out of the woodwork.
People don't want to deal with a high security operating environment, - BillGates, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2masterofshadows: yeah it is a spam but don't clutter up the page with complaining about people complaining about spam. Just go over to that rate comment box and mark it as such.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Who made this guy god? he states the very most obvious things and gets praised I foresee tomorrow "Dvorak on 'the sky is blue'".
- frogman54, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I have decided that I am going to be evil from now on. I'm going to kick puppies. I'm going to see how far I can throw kittens. I might even kill a hobo just for fun. Then...six months from now...I'm going to post this article again just to infuriate those digg users who can't bare to see something more than once. MUHAHAHAHA!
- cool4u2view, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1-3 spam for you kyle133
- hawks5999, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1wikiterra... how can you say dvorak is a limelight hog? he's under contract to PC Mag, MarketWatch to produce columns on a periodic basis (monthly, bi-weekly). It's his job. He's not "squawking" for the sake of being heard. He's squawking for the sake of fulfilling his contractual obligation. If you are going to complain, complain about PC Mag and CBS/DowJones that keep renewing his contract.
- a99tandem, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I'm sick of every article Dvorak writes showing up on DiGG. This guy is a complete tool.
- charmedguy18, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Does anyone know how to add someone as a friend? lol I know this is not the place, and I'm a lil slow so i can't find the like for it lol im sry if this angers you:(
- Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Who the hell is Dvorak.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Dvorak is a pompous jackass who cannot write at all. Didn't his grammar teacher teach him not to include a sentence in multitude?
- Pile, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1His 15 minutes expired about 15 years ago. Hello?
