- loqqq, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Let me save you some time . . . ~ Thank you for installing Winbackup 1.86 . . . Click here to purchase an upgrade to WinBackup 2.0 ~
- Jeffrey903, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17I use Cobian Backup to backup my files.
http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm
I have it automatically scheduled to backup certain files by taking them and creating a password protected ZIP file, and then uploading the backups to my website via FTP.
Did I mention it's free? - covaro, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11/me puts on my "free software whore" t-shirt and heads to download
- Dash-2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8yay! Free outdated software! YES!
- rhyno2000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Free, but what a crummy 1999 interface...
I highly recommend the venerable SyncBack Freeware instead:
http://www.2brightsparks.com/downloads.html
Tons of advanced features like scheduling, filtering, mapped network drives, etc... even in this free version (a paid "SE" is available but hardly required).
The program is rock solid - hasn't missed a beat backing up 30 GB nightly from multiple servers over network & FTP for 7 months.
Hmmm... maybe I should blog this in some sort of "My Favorite Freeware" list :)) - habitat2050, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8if you have a newer dell and run into any problems and want to wipe it clean without the disc press ctrl-F11 at bios startup. Dell doesnt tell you about it though cause thats what they do when you send it in to be serviced.
- mlts22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Backup software is something that is (IMHO) still in the Stone Age for Windows and UNIX systems. GNU tar, ufsdump, and even rsyncing to a directory on a remote machine are workable options, but these days, there is more than just copying files. One needs encryption for various law compliance, ability to verify all media in case something got damaged. There are some good backup solutions like IBM's Tivoli Storage Manager, Backup Exec, Legato Networker, but they are for the enterprise, and priced accordingly.
For the consumer, tape drives are either prohibitively priced ($2000+ for a decent DLT), or do not have the capacity to be better than stacks of DVD recordable media. Of course, there are removable hard disks, but there are concerns about data longevity on those.
Windows PCs have their backup issues as well. I've tried a number of utilities, and ended up sticking with EMC/Insignia's Retrospect software. It has its glitches, but so far, after using it on a daily basis writing to stacks of DVD media, its been a solid performer. It supports making an emergency restore CD (which I tried and works excellently for Windows systems), and supports as clients a number of popular operating systems. Its not perfect though... my biggest beef about it is that it requires a license key to do anything after being installed, and sometimes, that info isn't available. Some programs like bru allow for data to be restored, but not backed up if there are no license keys present, while other programs like Tivoli Storage Manager will work, but nag you on the license audit failure, however will let you resume normal operations.
All and all, backup software for computers is still in the Stone Age. Only a scant few programs support solid encryption, fewer support the concept of disk to disk to tape, and even fewer support the concept of a synthetic full backup (TSM and Retrospect support this, where the software makes a full backup snapshot from incrementals.) - kenplaysviola, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Unfortunately this Winbackup software does not support Mapped network drives. :(
- kalphegor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Isn't like system restore, is more like Backup from Disk Properties -> Tools
And is free because they release a new version WinBackup 2.0 - kendawg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9cool, let's thank them by killing their site :)
- junkyinny, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6but when windows fails to boot ? how do you launch this proggie? stick with norton ghost and/or drive snapshot.. or any other self bootable image restore proggie..
- MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+62.0 also costs $49.95. But apparently there's a free trial version. But you have to give them a name and email address for it.
- Ansible42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3syncback does work very well, which I can't say for the other 4-5 shareware/freeware sync programs I've tried. The microsoft 'synctoy' program is junk, which kind of surprised me. Turns out it really is just that, a toy that breaks if you try to do anything real with it.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Blah.... keep it simple restore / backup.... batch script with WINZIP or WINRAR......
I hate backup applications that use "their" format....which leaves your data at their mercy. If the company
decides to drop support and fails to update for your latest version of OS, your screwed. With a standard
(WinZip or WinRAR) you know they will be around for generations to come.
Believe me, I've tried, IOmega Backup, NeroBackup, Roxio(Adaptec) backup, Windows Backup... hell I even bought a Iomega Ditto tape Drive.... they dropped support for it after Win98... so I would have to build a new
system running Win98 just to get my data. - volsung, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Oh wow. 100% accuracy of restores! That beats all of my other backup options that only save 90% of my data. You sold me there!
- kirupa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I use FolderShare (http://www.foldershare.com) for all of my backing up purposes. I have a old, monitor-less computer with a big/cheap hard drive whose sole purpose is to sync up with all of my PCs (college/home) and have a nice copy of all the files stored.
The only downside is that your rate of backup is limited by your bandwidth, but with a nice web-based interface for accessing the files and an easy-to-use client application, I found it very useful. Best of all, I do not have to worry about another company hosting the files on my behalf, and for the cost of free (I already pay for broadband), it is also a good deal. - staydead, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5True, though it doesn't hinder the funcationality of the software in any way.
- cbenard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow. I knew about foldershare before, but it's FREE now. I'm going to use this at work and home. Microsoft is good for some things! (they bought Foldershare and pulled a Google by making it free)
- undauntedspirit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Same here, Cobian does great. Wish it would support 7-zip format.
- troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its real crapware. Causes loads of errors and doesn't write to all cds. Genie backup rocks on
- SBelyea, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Microsoft also offers a windows XP powertoy called SyncToy, which actually does what its supposed to do, although you have to manually do some scheduling editing with the schedule manager if you want to have it do auto syncs/echoes/etc. Requires .NET 1.1 I believe, but it actually is a fairly nice piece of software if just want to keep stuff sync'd between a jump-drive/USB hard drive/2 hard drives/network drives, etc.
Did I mention it's free? After the initial $109.99 investment that is ;-) - hello2usir, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Is this news or an ad?
- cbenard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ignore this. i couldn't delete, only update.
- googlyguy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Thanks for the heads-up.
- j4s0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this aint worth digging. it's outdated. and just pushing you to buy the new version.
- Zeligplanet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Very bad programmed software, IMHO. I tried WinBackup some weeks ago. It looks good, but... It used 100% processor and allocates up to 350 Mb of RAM during a backup!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4cobian backup is horrible top 10 piece of flying dung (including the awful interface)
- CaptRR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Have to say I have been using syncback for a while, and it works very well. Though I have been unable to get the automatic backup function to work. Oh well, works for everything else.
- ewithrow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Real backupers use Retrospect.
- hotspot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Try this link instead to dld the s/w.. http://www.backupanswers.com/downloads/winbackupfreedr.exe
[The Features page bottom dld link is broken though] - Spuby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Or Backup4all, http://www.backup4all.com
- Softland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Their 2.0 version is not good either, better stick with the XP built-in backup. There are a lot of other freeware (pure freeware) alternatives out there.
- resetpassword, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7maybe because diggers think you're wrong
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yea, but if you've repartitioned, you'll also find a ghost file in there (the one they try to sell you) so you can reboot using that.
- Zarafyan, on 02/11/2008, -0/+0Very useful soft
http://www.rsschannelwriter.com - ronjohnson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use Karen's Replicator, free and G4 TV endorsed. Not a true backup of the hard drive, but it saves my important files.
http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptreplicator.asp - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I'd rather stick with rsync. Thanks.
- pbransford, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2completely useless if you have repartitioned the drive. I would suggest doing so as to not waste space on your "X" GB drive that is actually mysteriously "X - 8" GB.
- tokyopimp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2It was dead... anyways. This software seems pretty decent for free, can't complain. Although I just used Nero Back It Up that came with Nero 7 ultra, works well for me.
- tokyopimp, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5Well the site is already DIGGED TO DEATH!
Won't load page. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2ROOT KIT CITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- kenplaysviola, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Another free backup software I like to use is Allwaysync. It's free for personal use.
http://www.allwaysync.com
License is only $20 for full-version (XP and Server 2003)
Thanks for the post of this free backup software - djgump35, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5I am sure this is a dumb question, but I will ask anyway, how different is this from system restore?
- INMCM, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2and Grsync for retarded CLI-hating noobs like me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3
f
hey
***** YOU
whoever negative digg my comment
stupid ***** dont like the truth? THIS SOFTWARE IS A PIECE OF ***** !
now go back and ***** your dog - tokyopimp, on 10/12/2007, -20/+9Do people just give you a negative digg for no reason.
Why would two people give me a negative digg for saying the site has been digged to death, when it was? It might be up now, but it didn't load earlier.
Grow the hell up people. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3this is
SPAM
reported as such,
piece of ***** software - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2i do it cos this stupid ass comment system ... im hoping they'll turn it off
- Dash-2, on 10/12/2007, -21/+4yeah, this comment system is heavily abused. I posted a comment that said "DUPE" and had a link to the original story, and I got like negative 30 diggs on it. I emailed digg about it, they did nothing...
P.S. Its not dead, thats why you got negative diggs. - bacirriu, on 10/12/2007, -22/+5I bet dd has won atleast 100 times as many awards as this crap.
