- Toker, on 10/13/2007, -0/+12There's a little button on the right hand side of the quicktime download page that says "QuickTime Standalone Installer"
- mrman5917, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Or you can just get it from apple:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html - KinGvsKinG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3better off getting...
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm - Optimus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4nice. iTunes is hell.
- bushawa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apples download site for QuickTime no longer offers the standalone option on that page. And the link you guys have been boasting (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html) now redirects back to the main quicktime + itunes download.
Can anyone find a link to the quicktime with out itunes? - bytor7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or you can use Quicktime Alternative.
- Zivko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The guys running the site seem a bit, well, confused.
Quicktime OS 8 and OS 9? Damn, it's hard to even FIND a Quicktime link for OS version's that old, and even then iTunes isn't bundled with Quicktime, AND the latest version of iTunes for OS 9 is iTunes 2.0.
As for OS X, iTunes is not bundled with Quicktime 7 either, although most users would probably want iTunes on OS X anyway.
And big deal if iTunes is bundled with Quicktime, It's not as if Apple is installing Spyware/adware/malware on your machine, unlike some other companies. *coughRealcough* - Seaton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It states VERY clearly on the Apple page:
Download Quicktime with iTunes!
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
iTunes will not work without Quicktime. Quicktime will work without iTunes, which is why the alternative link is provided in the lower right corner.
Have you seen how many hoops you have to jump through on Real.com to try and download a free player? I rest my case. - LeegleechN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember using some insanely convoluted way on their site to get the unbundeled version before.
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iTunes needs quicktime to run so that way makes sense......
and as Zivko said, on OS X they are not bundled. I saw a quicktime update in my software update app, but i thought downloading iTunes 5 would get that....nope - Furious, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2what is this rookies are us?
- bryan8m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Direct: http://appldnld.m7z.net/qtinstall.info.apple.com/cisitalia/us/win/QuickTimeInstaller.exe
- galfridus73, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Uhhh... okay, so the fellow who dug around to find the standalone installer is to be commended? Please.
Go to to QT download page and open your eyes. You will see the link to the standalone installer on the right-hand side. Apple's not hiding it... at least not from those of us who can read. No digg. - Techeon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Quicktime Alternative does in fact stream in a browser... but lets get into the real meat of this topic.
iTunes requires quicktime in order to run. No trouble there. Quicktime doesn't require iTunes to run however. As, far as bundling goes though, this is hardly a big deal. Quicktime is in fact the most powerful media player available hands down. Yes, some players MAY have more features that YOU use, but power, production, etc its Quicktime definitely as the top player.
The alternative players are great! I happen to love using them. Classic Media Player is fantastic in that you can have just the video window showing without any controls, details, etc. Makes it like a widget almost. Quicktime alternative is included in the Mega Codec Pack, but the real reason to use this is because of the Real Player Alternative. The complete divx,3vix,etc codecs are nice as well.
I don't think, honestly that people should really be whinig about this "bundling" that hardly makes a big impact on anyone's computer usage. The purest minimalistic (not a word I know) users will complain and they are in their right, but for most of us... sure we'll take iTunes 5 along with Quicktime 7. - xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0O_o? It streams fine for me (quicktime alternative)
- jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stupid and uninformed. Quicktime is still unbundled. iTunes is what is bundled as Quicktime is needed to play midi and Mpeg/Avi audio and now video.
- dEvient, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll have to defend the person who posted this, because if anybody remembers a few days ago when QuickTime 7 was first released, the download page looked totally different, and there was NO link to a standalone installer. So those of us who were early downloaders, the only package available was the combo of QuickTime & iTunes.
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^ Exactly...
- CreepingDeath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"if only to prevent misinformed flames in forums like this about iTunes not working properly, from people who don't have Quicktime installed"
Um, then wouldn't it make sense to bundle Quicktime with iTunes, not the other way round? If I want to download quicktime, I want quicktime, period. (not that I even want that, the codec is all I need).
I really don't like bundled software at all. Unlike packaged hardware, its not more expensive to offer seperate downloads with perhaps the option of an all-in-one for the lazy folks. The all-in-one should not be the default ever, it wastes bandwidth and often hdd space by downloading and installing often unwanted apps. Ok I'll stop ranting now, being my first post here and all, I should be nice ;) - WarDave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Or google quicktime alternative, works for me and I like it better then quicktime. Also its FREE.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's stupid to bundle Quicktime with iTunes. Dugg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quicktime 7 killed my ImageReady CS 2, I can't import .avi files now. :(
- jekins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Personally I like the opportunity to reinstall in Quicktime because the QT 7 that was installed with my iTunes 5.0 didn't install browser plugins, so I get an error message. Hopefully this will fix that up.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dont know if i should install the new version of quicktime. it was a real pain in the ass to get the firefox plugin working and now that it works im not sure if i want to mess with it.
- arcman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The standalone installer was, and is, available from Apple's site.
No digg. - theROMANCE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate the bundling! It's so stupid! I need iTunes, but not Quicktime.
- xtremesniper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No digg. This is on Apple's OWN site.
- Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man I had the QT 7 beta installed and it gave me the worst time. The new iTunes wouldn't install right and there was no Qucktime uninstall. Took me foreever to get iTunes working again.
- isoprophlex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sadly lame digg. Only a moron couldn't find the QT installer on Apple's site.
- Jasoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No Digg, I love iTunes.
- sandstorm2k4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow... 32MB for a small player...
- jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh if you hate proprietary video hate real. At least you can play quicktime on VLC and other players. and other file formats on quicktime player.. And I have never installed quicktime to find my MPEG and other file formats associated with my QT.
Maybe real is better now but back in the day it was almost virus like. - SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I was gonna digg but since there is a standalone I won't bother. In fact I'll report this.
- clouder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0this really didn't require a digg seeing as how the first qt7 article's comments had this info. very stupid, uninstall life
- godmstr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0sigh... once again old news
NO DIGG FOR YOU - IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I just use VLC Media Player... I can't stand Quicktime... it's a cheap POS
- Al3xander, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0dude, the DON'T digg it!!!! but DON'T comment either.
Stop filling the comments with your stupid bitching. - zoltan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0apple sucks!
- digitaldd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0RANT ON---->--->>
I hate codec packs. ihate companies that make you jump through hoops to get the free/spywarefree/advertisingfree/unbundled versions of their software. Now if only media players/photo software wouldn't assume by default that you want them to associate with all supported file extensions..
RANT OFF ------->>>> - roeboedog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0um hello QT is the engine in iTunes, they are almost one in the same, almost.
and besides iTunes gets in you pocket book. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Some of the beast deal I have ever gotten have been bundled.
You can use bundled.
You can use stand alone.
But always use common sense.
- Digg - Kriz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Quicktime Alternative doesn't stream. That's Quicktime's biggest advantage, being able to stream in a browser window with a nice and fast player attached.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0iTunes is Apple's highest profile product which appeals to as many Windows users as it does to those of us who choose Macintosh.
It's only right that they should capitalize on that by bundling the software you need to ensure smooth operation of iTunes, if only to prevent misinformed flames in forums like this about iTunes not working properly, from people who don't have Quicktime installed, but who still want to use things like audio scrubbing, podcast / music store streaming previews and h.263 videocasts et cetera.
The more titles Apple can get on the Windows platform, the more people will see how easy to use their software is and so in time realise there's nothing to fear from buying their Operating System and hardware, the next time they are shopping for a new computer.
I've been Windows free for nearly a year now. I've never missed a single thing about it in that time. Never lost a document, never needed a firewall or an anti-virus bloatware, never had an "Application crashed for reason unknown", never had a "You must restart your computer for settings to take effect". It's close to perfect. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Steve "Blow" Jobs
- retr0spectiv, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1this is stupid. as many have posted, this can be found on APPLES OWN SITE.
