- TheShad0w, on 12/13/2007, -6/+24Thanks but I think I will stick to XviD
- PhinnFort, on 12/13/2007, -10/+21almost x2. But I'll rather use h264 (or, more specifically x264). I can't believe people still use DivX. Why?
- schnikies79, on 12/13/2007, -3/+34Because my $40 dvd player can play divx?
- jhuebel, on 12/13/2007, -2/+15It may look like crap, but I love my little Phillips DVD player. Best $30 I ever spent.
- jimi1337, on 12/13/2007, -0/+6My understanding is that XviD is the more widely-compatible format. I wouldn't be surprised if your DVD player played it, too.
- Otto, on 12/13/2007, -2/+6h264 requires too much processing power to decode. My Xbox with XBMC can't play it, generally speaking. But the same thing in Xvid is the same size, roughly, looks almost as good, and plays great.
- rpgmaker, on 12/13/2007, -1/+13Who is digging this ***** up? The internet is full of DivX/XviD files. The vast majority of scene groups encode their works in XviD.
- Ataxia87, on 12/14/2007, -8/+1Convert to DivX? NICE! I'll store them along with my GBs of .movs and .wmvs!!!
- piesforyou, on 12/15/2007, -1/+2be quiet.
- schnikies79, on 12/13/2007, -3/+34Because my $40 dvd player can play divx?
- i208khonsu, on 12/14/2007, -3/+6I use DivX for two reasons.
The first is that Stage6 is 100 times better than You Tube in terms of size, quality, and accessibility to download. Also I've tried XviD and although a file size is smaller for a similar bit rate the color depth is slightly less than that of DivX. I only hope that DivX Author features are integrated into Stage6 soon.- alexforcefive, on 12/14/2007, -1/+2I don't really understand codecs =/ but the stage6 player does LOOK nicer than youtube, although it is terribly, terribly annoying.
- potofgravy, on 12/14/2007, -2/+1vimeo.com is very good and doesn't need divx or anything install. Plus you can embed it easily.
- PhinnFort, on 12/13/2007, -10/+21almost x2. But I'll rather use h264 (or, more specifically x264). I can't believe people still use DivX. Why?
- mooninite, on 12/13/2007, -11/+20Thanks but I think I'll stick to Matroska for my container, Ogg Theora and h.264 HQ for video, and AC3 for audio. DivX is far too proprietary and is going out of style.

- hudef, on 12/13/2007, -4/+6Thanks mooninite, for the lead to Matroska. It seems to handle everything and it's free. Ignore the morons who dug you down. Some people have ***** for brains.
- RoboDonut, on 12/13/2007, -2/+6Pretty close to what I use.
Matroska/OGG container.
h.264 Video stream.
6-channel Vorbis audio. - trogdor282, on 12/13/2007, -1/+5Huh?? DivX is MPEG-4 Part 2, and h264 is MPEG-4 Part 10. BOTH are proprietary/patented.
- PhinnFort, on 12/14/2007, -1/+3One is heads and bounds over the other in quality, and one is actually a standard. Guess which one?
- P3dr4m1, on 12/13/2007, -7/+2well once i find a video that ***** supports what u ***** use i might download it prick

- MASTERPL, on 12/13/2007, -1/+41If only you had the right digg friends they would spam your garbage to the front page too. Maybe even for free.
- sgtpppr, on 12/13/2007, -0/+61It takes a perfect alignment of the entire cosmos to get a post on the front page unless you are one of a few digg power users. If someone like MrBabyMan posted a link to a blank page, it'd be on the front page in less than 30 minutes. I posted an article some time back that got like 3 diggs. A week later, one of the power users posted the exact same article from the same site and it was on the front page that afternoon with hundreds of diggs. Go figure.
- Takteek, on 12/14/2007, -0/+14Sounds like a system that needs some adjustments. *COUGH*
- bacon_skoda, on 12/14/2007, -0/+11"I submitted this days ago....and without the blog spam!"
there's your problem right there. it was too early.
you HAVE to copy someone else's submit...THEN stuff it inside some blog spam.
or else no one will read it.

- jimi1337, on 12/13/2007, -5/+3...what?
- Breepee, on 12/13/2007, -2/+16Funny (really !), but wrong. Divx is more like the hand and Xvid the real thing. And x264 is like a harem: even better than the real thing.
- norman619, on 12/13/2007, -11/+4o_0.... Has it really been THAT long since you guys had a woman?

- bjornski, on 12/13/2007, -10/+4Because I don't like Xvid. Divx is nice, works well with my editing software, and my DVD player plays it.
- Ataxia87, on 12/14/2007, -0/+6Your DVD player should also play xvid as well then.
- sadjoker, on 12/14/2007, -0/+3Or your DVD Player is Hitler`s DVD player. It plays only archaic codecs.

- bjornski, on 12/13/2007, -3/+1Because Divx works well on my equipment, and I like the format.
I'm not making my videos for you. What do you care? Let those of us that do use this format be happy with this link.
- nullx42, on 12/13/2007, -15/+7with usenet, its always free.. besides.. xvid's better

- fani, on 12/13/2007, -0/+13I got it for free during last years similar divx giveaway for a day. I then bought the $9.99 mpeg2 plugin.
Then I discovered SUPER which does all this for free. Bummer.
Quality wise, divx converter is same as SUPER, although faster for encoding. I think that may justify the price for some.- bacon_skoda, on 12/14/2007, -1/+8super.
- tito13kfm, on 12/14/2007, -0/+3SUPER is just a gui for ffmpeg. Real men use a CLI, not a GUI.

It's a checkbox. Uncheck it, and the toolbar won't be installed. It's not difficult.
I would like to think that anyone actually able to make use of this program would be smart enough to read the installers when they install their software.

Divx is pretty honest with their stuff, I haven't received any spam, and the converter works fine for encoding stuff to put on stage6.com, which is leaps and bounds better than youtube. At least until viacom decides to start cracking down. I know I sound like a fanboy/spammer, but seriously, divx has gotten so much better in the past year or so.

- OneMoreDigger, on 12/13/2007, -0/+7come on man look at the page it's right up top there
- Mikhail101, on 12/13/2007, -1/+11once again digg has saved me money.
- mahsah, on 12/13/2007, -3/+8Why would you even use divx? If you want a good ASP codec, use xvid, it is better then divx and 100 compatable.
- Breepee, on 12/13/2007, -2/+9Wow, that's so much better than only 1 compatible.
- bruce89, on 12/13/2007, -1/+4I think mahsah means it's 100% ISO MPEG-4 ASP compatible. (3 warp point GMC for instance)
- Ascendancy5, on 12/13/2007, -0/+7I love Divx, a much better alternative to Windows Media Player that Vista comes packaged with.
- DjShiznit, on 12/13/2007, -2/+10This offer DOES apply for Macs. http://www.divx.com/dff/index.php?version=mac
- TennisElbow, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3And there's no bloatware in the Mac install package...just the divx player and divx converter.

- ronin691, on 12/13/2007, -8/+3I take caution in any "Free if you fill out this form right away!" offers late in the year like this. Every failed company and desperate commissioned sales person are all trying to make up for poor performance at the expense of your privacy. See:

Linux is well, well used in the TV and video industry. this "free" software sucks balls.- sparkey, on 12/14/2007, -0/+4Dugg down for reposting your earlier comment. It wasn't insightful the first time.
- aurrea, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5Someone help.... I've been spending the last 2 weeks converting my DVD library to WMV and now I'm wondering if I should have used DIVX.
Can someone enlighten on the difference? Pro/Cons etc?
I tried to convert a couple DVDs to DIVX and it seemed to take about 15 minutes longer to encode the same movie I converted to wmv.
When I streamed both through my Xbox they seemed to look the same. HELP! I figure I'm only 100 movies through a collection of 500+ so I wouldn't mind changing formats now...- Ub3rg33k, on 12/13/2007, -4/+2Why not convert to XVid, H.264, or Snow?
As for the pro's and con's, what is it you hope to accomplish? - Langford, on 12/13/2007, -2/+7WMV is a one way proprietary conversion. You are stuck with it, until support for it is eventually discontinued and you can't view them anymore, unless of course you use "illegal software" and they hunt you down like a dog for manipulating your own media.
- bdbr, on 12/14/2007, -2/+2"WMV is a one way proprietary conversion"? You're writing this when the subject is software that converts WMV to DivX?
- SatansSpatula, on 12/14/2007, -1/+2Your smarmy comment is incorrect. The topic is converting a DVD library (presumably actual disks, or ISO files) to either WMV or another format. Aurrea can switch and re-encode (from the DVD or ISO) the 100 that he/she's already encoded.

- aurrea, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1I just plan on streaming them through my 360. The TV is big but nothing special. It's 57' with 1080i res. Now that Xbox supports other formats I can switch to anything but I just need some advice.
- SatansSpatula, on 12/14/2007, -0/+1I'm definitely now playing Xvid/DivX encoded files on my XBox, though I have to trick it into seeing them as WMV files or else it will refuse to play them. Not sure about H.264 yet, but that's what I'm currently encoding a couple discs to for testing.
- bdbr, on 12/14/2007, -0/+1It all depends on what your equipment supports. WMV is probably best for the 360. Some DVD players play DivX, but not WMV. Creative MP3/media players most likely play both. iPods don't play either, so you might need something different there.
This DivX pro converter can convert your WMVs to DivX, by the way. There might be some loss in the process, just try it out before committing to anything. - tito13kfm, on 12/14/2007, -0/+1WMV is the only way to get 5.1 surround to your x360 at the moment. Also the VC-1 codec that can be used to encode has a great size to quality ratio. H.264 encoded videos almost always need to be stored in a mov container to work with the 360 and cannot be above AVC level 4.1 and no more than Stereo sound. Until microsoft opens up the supported formats (unlikely) or an XBMC for the 360 comes out (just waiting on the ability to run unsigned code) I would stick with wmv.
- anononon, on 12/14/2007, -0/+2XBOX360 supports 5.1AC3 on divx/xvid files with the latest dashboard update.
- Icetype, on 12/14/2007, -0/+1I would just put the DVD into the Xbox and play it. Save yourself 500+ hours of your life.

- IllBeBack, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1Even if you rename the VOB file to MPG?
- brownr21, on 12/13/2007, -13/+0WMV converter is free, does a better job, and works on more people's computers.
DivX ftl.- omgwthlol, on 12/13/2007, -2/+5wmv lol wtf
- bjornski, on 12/13/2007, -1/+4WMV's suck in every aspect but size. I much prefer to stick to AVI.
- Ataxia87, on 12/14/2007, -2/+0FFS, .avi is a container format you douche
- bjornski, on 12/14/2007, -0/+1I'm assuming the Divx codec would be used.
I'd have to open up my editor to tell you more, I don't keep most of that memorized.

- Fingertips, on 12/13/2007, -0/+7Use http://www.guerrillamail.com/ for a temp email
- bdbr, on 12/13/2007, -1/+7I did this a couple of days ago. First try, I used a Yahoo mail account. I never got the registration e-mail. So I used my ISP account, which I reserve for non-spammers (so it never gets any junk mail).
I've received about 50 spam e-mails that night, and about 20 since then. I sent them an angry e-mail last night; they opened a case and later closed it.
Definitely use a temp mail account! - TennisElbow, on 12/13/2007, -1/+2I just signed up with a temporaryinbox.com throwaway address and it worked. As for the people saying why used divx when you could use xvid...xvid doesn't play .divx files. Sucks but we're still living in an era when you need to install multiple codecs on your machine in order to watch all of the videos you encounter. Besides, Divx for Mac doesn't contain any spyware or yahoo toolbar crap.
- bruce89, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3The .divx files are just modified AVIs in fact. AFAIK, Totem's (GNOME's media player) DivX plugin does these files.
