- DigitAl56K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Those are some unthoughtful comments. The point is that you can watch the video in the browser - not force your web browser to open an external application. This allows web developers to create convenient pages designed around video in a web page, and to ensure that video can be played easily by visitors without worrying them about installing large software suites and manually configuring browser preferences to download to temporary locations then open external media players. In the beta you still have to install the plug-in manually, but in future it could be automatic thorugh the browsers built in process.
The plug-in also does other nice things, like allow you to play the video almost immediately instead of waiting for the whole file to download, and it will save a copy to disc for you automatically too incase you want to watch it again later.
Neat, no? :) - DigitAl56K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you want to adjust the brightness try adjusting the settings for your video overlay. This is a feature of most graphics drivers that can be accessed through the advanced settings of the display properties control panel. The beta plug-in doesn't have built in controls for that in this first release.
Luke: There's an SDK linked on the DivX Labs article, but the script used for the samples we posted is extremely simple. Use the option in your browser to view the page source, you easily copy and paste the plug-in code into your own web page and just change the URL to the source file.
Have fun! - sk545, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cool, works with opera 9p1 as well.
- pHr34kY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll digg it because there's no good plugin for Linux - seriously! They all suck.. and I've tried about 6 of them!
Can't wait to see some development of this :) - Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This wouldn't be a big deal if more players supported procedural download. But the only program I've ever found that does it properly is the DivX player.
Is it really so hard to play an AVI file as it is downloading it, and save it as you go? Several other players come close (mplayer, VLC), but they either stream content treating it as a buffer, or don't save the content as they go.
Even the DivX player has one critical flaw: for some reason, it isn't capable of resuming a broken download if the player or computer crashes, or the net connection is lost. I mean, come on, you ask it to stream a file, instead of deleting the existing file, maybe it should try to resume it?
I've been holding out hope that Gabest will add procedural download support to MPC, but so far no luck.
I should note that it is neat that VLC can play AVI files off FTP and other formats. VLC is just uselessly complicated for casual use. Now of MPC added procedural download support, and added support for FTP via the "ftp://username:password@domain.com/path/to/file.avi" type URL...... - Midnightbrewer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"need one for omniweb man..."
No you don't. DivX on the Mac integrates directly into Quicktime, which means that you don't need an additional plugin. - DigitAl56K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1trjdigg: DivX is a standard in itself used by millions of people worldwide, built into many DVD players and portable media players these days, and were always expanding our horizons. DivX is about providing a rich media experience and empowering people. We do that in part by providing high quality interoperable solutions that work within our standard. Which technologies telcos want to use for IPTV in their closed systems is rather meaningless as far as our vision is concerned.
The important thing here is that the browser plug-in is high quality, easy to use on your own site, and pretty darn cool ;) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is pretty sweet video quality is great, sound is sweet and it has a full screen function you can access through right clicking.
plus that X-Men 3 trailer is sweet! - battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Won't play the video and it crashes IE.
***** awsome. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Worked flawlessly in Firefox 1.5. Excellent plugin -- finally.
- DigitAl56K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From the article:

Known issues
The beta plug-in may be unable to display video if other software on your computer is already using your video hardware. If you experience problems try closing media players and other open pages containing the browser plug-in. - DigitAl56K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0battybattybatt: Check the known-issues list in the linked article.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wooohooo, why did it take this long??
- battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Browser crashes when you try to report the bug to labs.divx.com
- amscadding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great tool. Thanks for the previous posting (digital56k) about making sure there wasn't other graphics programs running. Turned off powerdvd and divx worked perfectly.
- crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet!
- seattle98104, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah but is disabled like their codec is? e.g. the free divx codec runs purposefully slower than the pro version.
- soccerob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is brilliant. i hope this becomes a web standard for embedding videos because it looks amazing. i hope thats what this project is aiming for because it would bring higher quality videos to the web and allow them to load more quickly.
http://soccerob.com - tmcleroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that is pretty cool. so is the xmen 3 trailer btw.
- MicahC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gotta agree with M1th, the plug-in worked flawlessly in Firefox 1.5.
- battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IPTV died a year ago , pal, wake up and move to another industry standard - like DivX.
Aint non of this gonna happen without fiber last-mile and gigabit FREE access to all homes.
PERIOD. - Schrade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This thing rocks. Now to find out if it can play .avi files made with the XviD codec or any of the other codecs that DivX can play.
- rino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quicktime works just fine in Firefox for me... a little wanky now and then on the window redraws but a zoom of the window works just fine to clear it up.
- BlueFiberOp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome! I'd prefer this over Quicktime/Windows Media Player on websites.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just noticed another cool function if you right click on the video you get a full menu with all kinds of stuff some highlights:
"Save video as" - so you don't have to download the movie every time you want to watch it!
Mute - could be neat if you want to run a video in the background of a web page and not play the sound
Pause, Stop FF Rewind - this is nice I hate it when the webmaster disables the controls of the video so you can't seek in it etc.
Preferences - allows you to turn on or off the download of the movies if you don't want to keep them or, change the save location if you do.
Windowed mode - so you can keep browsing around and watch the movie at the same time
and most importantly - full screen mode - try watching in full-screen it is awesome feels like TV - and the quality of video is great - kicks quick time and flash and WMV for movie trailers butt all over the place.
Great stuff - someone post when they have implemented this into their own site - msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0need one for omniweb man...
- gk128, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For some reason it won't work for me.... a cool idea. I just need to figure out my problem.
- futoranime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now all we need is a tutorial for use in our websites and we got some sweet things happening.

- ~INVASION~, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i love this little plugin, its awesome. But is there any hack or something that will let me use it for all videos, that would be sooooo sweet

www.invasionbeta.com - thepctech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This deserves a double digg!! Looks like a great client for streaming video content! Video on demand is here!!!

Nooooooooooooo Thank You. :-) - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Why another plugin? Just set up Firefox to fire off all media to WinAmp or Quick/RealPlayer Alternative.
Heck WinAMP 5.2 now downloads the required CoDec. - roy204, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For petsod:
We haven't tested it thoroughly yet, but It actually probably is working with opera 9 as well. - roy204, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also, we'd be really grateful to hear more details from the people that are having problems with it so we can make it better. Cheers.
- spyres, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0---
Why another plugin? Just set up Firefox to fire off all media to WinAmp or Quick/RealPlayer Alternative.
Agreed. I just have FF fire up VLC and all is well. - bat-21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmph! Just get the MediaPlayerConnectivity extension for Firefox and use can use any player you want.
- Kriz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, neat!
- roy204, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For bat-21: The whole point of the plug-in is that it plays while it downloads, and with most connections speeds, as soon as it downloads. Not after a full download like it does when forwarding to an external app... It streams but saves the file as well.
- psifactory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Any questions or Feedback about the GUI Design, you can ask me here, by e-mail ( psi@psi-factory.info ), or on my website ( http://www.psi-factory.info ).

http://www.psi-factory.info/ - seattle98104, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0actually I had access to both the free and the pro versions, and the free in fact ran slower and dropped frames on slower machines where the pro and xvid codec would play files fine.
- DigitAl56K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It probably detected that something was being installed in the browser. There is no spyware in the plug-in.
- Mattman723, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How come my spyware program detected spyware during the install...
- DigitAl56K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually I'm the product manager for the DivX codec, and the playback of the free and Pro versions is identical. The difference between the two is that there are more advanced options available to you in the encoder for creating DivX media if you have the Pro version, and we include a free 6 month trial of that with no strings attached.
- nnellans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Want to use the plugin on your site? Use my code generator:
http://divxplugin.entwocomputing.com - diggAddict, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome - I love DivX.. DivX is much better than XVID in my opinion, better backed and works flawlessly on countless NON-PC hardware - go DivX.
- Kelliente, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I WAS really excited about this, but like others I am having a helluva problem with it being too dark. It's only the plugin that has the problem as DIVX videos that are downloaded (even from their alpha6 community or whatever it's called) and then played on my local player look fine. Adjusting the brightness or taking off the hardware overlay does nothing.
So far, I've seen several other people post in forums about having this problem, but as yet, there doesn't seem to be any fix for it. - DigitAl56K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0New version:
http://digg.com/software/DivX_Browser_Plug-in_Beta_2_-_Now_supporting_Opera_browser_and_HD_video_ - DigitAl56K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0seattle98104: The plug-in is not restricted - it is free.
Also: The free DivX codec does not run slower than the Pro version, it simply makes fewer advanced settings available to you. -
