- tnatharik, on 02/17/2008, -16/+3Cool, this story has already been submitted.
- str3ama, on 02/17/2008, -5/+79A lot of those are limited to US even joost has a few videos that only US class C ips can access. It's more like legal tv show alternatives, none of these are actual cable alternatives. Here's a few more, including other legal ones:
http://www.jumptv.com (legal some free, mostly paid stuff)
http://freetube.110mb.com (live tv type site)
http://www.sopcast.org (requires plugin)
http://www.tvants.com (Chinese, plugin, I don't use it because some versions contain spyware, plus it's a bit trickier to use)
http://dynamic.abc.go.com/streaming/landing (ABCs streaming site, they actually offer HD versions for free as well, US only)
http://www.innertube.com (CBS streaming site, it's not bad but limited to US only as well, it peils compared to ABC)
http://www.cnn.com/livepipe/ (CNN live)- AlanHolcome, on 02/17/2008, -8/+3Innertube? heh heh.
That is a good one. - jacobmorrison, on 02/17/2008, -1/+4http://www.myeasytv.com/ seems to be much better to me, because its free and it has real live TV stations. Sites listed in the articles aren't really giving you real TV stations
- my10cent, on 02/18/2008, -0/+8*lol* CBS is http://www.cbs.com/innertube/ the one you mentioned goes to a tire ad.

- joebaloney, on 02/18/2008, -1/+4Is it not strange that no one mentions sticking an antenna on your roof? With stations broadcasting in HD, it aint bad and I've never had cable personally cause I am not about to spend 20+ bucks a month for more TV to watch, I get more than I want over the air.

- AlanHolcome, on 02/17/2008, -8/+3Innertube? heh heh.
- Varz, on 02/17/2008, -14/+6This might be feasible if bandwidth quotas didn't exist.
Most people can't afford unlimited.- Uranium118, on 02/17/2008, -2/+3Cost vs Reward. If you watch a movie per month, then don't go with unlimited bandwidth. If you use 300GB per month, go for it. I haven't watched TV in over a year now because I have unlimited bandwidth. In a few years, internet will replace TV.
- unreg, on 02/18/2008, -3/+2Doubtful
- Corman420, on 02/18/2008, -1/+8If your broadband cant handle video then I think it's time to ditch it....
- Varz, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2Actually all thats available here is 1.5Mb, 40GB Peak and 80GB offpeak quota for a month costs over $150 a month.
You don't seem to realise that not everyone lives near a DSLAM or in a city.
- Varz, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2Actually all thats available here is 1.5Mb, 40GB Peak and 80GB offpeak quota for a month costs over $150 a month.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 02/18/2008, -0/+4300GB a month? That would cost me a small fortune here in Australia. I only get 20GB and it costs $50 a month. If I switch to ADSL2+ I'll only get a maximum of 3Mbps, I live too far from the exchange.
- tommgunn, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1I pay $60 for (1.5) 40GB down - 40 GB up and 40GB local. I can download up to 80 gb, and upload 40... but if either of these goes over 40, the whole lot gets shaped. Adam ftw!

- SurlyDuff, on 02/17/2008, -9/+4I heard about hulu on this week's dl.tv...sounds like that's gonna be a pretty good alternative:P
- Aiwanei, on 02/17/2008, -3/+6I've been a member of Hulu for months, and it really is a good alternative but not a great one. One of the big things hurting it is the slow pace that studios put episodes up after they air. TV shows like Psych and Monk are about 2 weeks behind and house is 8 days behind. Now that isn't so bad, but there is no logical reason why Fox can put up the simpsons, family guy, the sarah conner chronicles, HOURS after they air and then be 8 days for house. Hopefully they will get rid of this practice.
- RedS0x, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1If anyone wants an invite to Hulu let me know. It's really really nice, and I have a few spares. ;-)
- looselips, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1http://openhulu.com/ is easier. No invite or log-in needed for same content as hulu.

- ryanspahn, on 02/17/2008, -12/+5LoL paying for cable?!? WIth your PC hooked up to a LCD TV (like this guy http://techavid.com) whats the point of cable?
Ok if your a sports and CNN fan then the Internet is not there yet, but otherwise cut the cord!- ozid, on 02/17/2008, -2/+11Because some people like channel surfing and discovering new shows. These suggestions are great for me since I have a big monitor for my computer, but a small TV, but there are times I like to sit in front of the tube and channel surf.
ISP's should be the ones providing the television for free, or else their television businesses are going to crash and burn. (i'm looking at you Verizon Fios) - drjones78, on 02/17/2008, -3/+2Hmm interesting... Road Runner has this site blocked. I try to go there and a its a "roadrunner"sponsored page with ads.
- drjones78, on 02/17/2008, -0/+3Nevermind, it was an error in the link of the OP... he had a ) at the end of it.
- Dantetheinferno, on 02/17/2008, -0/+2I don't pay for cable. OTA is good enough for me =). Costs nothing.
- my10cent, on 02/18/2008, -1/+1The problem here is that down the road cable companies are going to deny customers broadband inet if they dont have cable, simply because of this *lol* wanna bet?
- iAmAgirl, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1For sports: at www.espn360.com you can stream up to 6 games simultaneously, but you must subscribe to a participating high speed internet service provider. I have Verizon so I know Verizon carries it.
- IronPwnage, on 02/18/2008, -0/+16 games at the same time? Honestly what good is in there in that?

- OJdidntdoIT, on 02/17/2008, -4/+38Until I can get those damn Spanish channels for free, can't drop the Dish. Wife would have a damn fit with no telenovels.
- ozid, on 02/17/2008, -1/+22I dated a girl who's parents were into those. They're actually a decent way to learn spanish. And the story lines are good compared to english daytime soap operas.
- Dantetheinferno, on 02/17/2008, -0/+12Yes, you learn "Dios mio!"
- Igno, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2Whatever telenovels you're watching, they're definitely *not* the ones I hate to see while waiting for a doctor's appointment or something. I regret being able to understand what they say.

- stalefries, on 02/17/2008, -0/+5As far as I know, Verizon hasn't done much (if anything). Plus, people like Verizon's FiOS.
- renegadeafk, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1I'm on comcast in vermont and have never had any trouble downloading or seeding, I don't think comcast messes with torrents in where I lvioe (Middle of nowhere in vermont)

- Bamborzled, on 02/17/2008, -4/+2Go back to YouTube (where I'm assuming you're from). This isn't meant as an insult, but it's not you, it's Digg's community. You won't fit here in Digg as someone who likes Ashton Kutcher.

- Spamcan, on 02/17/2008, -3/+5I have Miro set up with RSS feeds of every show I watch and use Connect360 to watch them on my XBOX. It's not exactly legal but it sure beats paying for cable.
- my10cent, on 02/18/2008, -3/+1But it is illegal and you are at risk when you do it :) I agree though Miro is awesome
- aapala, on 02/17/2008, -3/+151I get my internet from my cable company. How am I supposed to ditch them??
- stalefries, on 02/17/2008, -9/+2Switch ISPs?
- xXShadowstormXx, on 02/17/2008, -1/+9A lot of people don't have a choice.
- positron, on 02/17/2008, -9/+5 Uh, step 1 would be to find a new ISP. Just a guess.
- 1stJonnyDee, on 02/17/2008, -2/+7A lot of people don't have many choices, if at all. Where I live, you can get Qwest DSL or Cox High Speed. That's it. Oh yeah, which one you choose also depends on where in town you live. So, uh, just a guess...it's not always a clear cut and simple step.
- TonyLocNE, on 02/18/2008, -1/+1I bet you live in Omaha! If you think that is bad, you should try lincoln. The only service we can get here for cable is Time Warner because they have an exclusive contract with the city to where no other provider can come in.. Talk about monopoly..
- RMSzero, on 02/18/2008, -0/+3My choices are:
1) Comcast cable internet
2) Dial-up- MtheoryX, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1My choices are:
1.) Comcast cable internet
I don't have a land-line phone in my house (we only use cell service), so it would be an extra expense just to get dial up here. And no DSL service available at all. AT&T said im too far away from the CO. Which is weird, since I live in the city.
- MtheoryX, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1My choices are:
- 1stJonnyDee, on 02/17/2008, -2/+7A lot of people don't have many choices, if at all. Where I live, you can get Qwest DSL or Cox High Speed. That's it. Oh yeah, which one you choose also depends on where in town you live. So, uh, just a guess...it's not always a clear cut and simple step.
- zephyr42, on 02/17/2008, -1/+5Unless you're in a big city with more alternatives.... at this point you really can't beat cable on internet.
assuming they're a decent ISP- antdude, on 02/18/2008, -0/+5I am a sortof big city and only got one!
- tgc1, on 02/17/2008, -15/+0Get Dial-up. You all might laugh, with a hearty roar. But sometimes it's better to have slow internet than no internet or having to bend over every month to get raped. I'd switch to Dial-Up if I had to. It sucks, but then so does having no internet.
- griz, on 02/17/2008, -0/+12Yea, IPTV should look great over your 56k connection.
- xkorbin, on 02/18/2008, -0/+7What if he is a fan of slideshows?
- antdude, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1Uh, then how will you watch streaming videos? :P
- tgc1, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1Slowly.
- cphelps, on 02/18/2008, -0/+3A lot of times you can end up paying just as much for dial-up. You gotta have the phone line plus the service. I pay 30 bucks a month for my cable. It would cost me the same plus more for dial-up since I don't even have a land line right now and would have to pay installation fees for that.
- RobotBuddha, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1I had to go back to dialup for a couple weeks after moving. I'd rather park myself outside the slowest wifi spot and squint at my PDA than suffer it again.
- griz, on 02/17/2008, -0/+12Yea, IPTV should look great over your 56k connection.
- my10cent, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1Well at this moment my ISP does not not require me to have their cable package also, but I bet they will change that soon.
- Waterrat, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1The same for hree...We have very basic cable so we can get PBS.
- heartless_, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1Damn, our ISP requires you have the basic cable package (not very basic), otherwise they hike the price of the Internet package to compensate. It is actually cheaper to have Internet and the cable package sadly.
- triskele, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2You beat me to it.
Currently cable TV and internet are monopolized in my area (Verizon's FIOs is on it's way, or so they say) and with all the damn growth the service is getting worse. - 0ceanic, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1im in the same boat.
i just use it as a justification that im entirely in the legal.
- stalefries, on 02/17/2008, -9/+2Switch ISPs?
- 10scott10, on 02/17/2008, -15/+16No sports == fail
- birch25, on 02/18/2008, -4/+12why are you digging him down? sporting events have huge audiences. how could one seriously suggest someone who watches sports to ditch their cable provider?

- undershirt, on 02/18/2008, -3/+1hhahaha, that was very much appreciated, thank you
- Yclif, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1Here is all the sport you need. hit up http://www.myp2p.eu/ , select the Live Sports tab and pick your game. all the live sports you need. (mind you you have to download the proper player it will be playing on, such as TVU or Sopcast. BOTH are light and no spyware. highly recommend it.
- getisboy, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1True (or u mean =)
- OGla, on 02/17/2008, -16/+3Watch free unique tv shows on sites like www.youtube.com, www.myspacetv.com, www.revision3.com, www.dayrobber.com and many more.
- hydrodev, on 02/17/2008, -0/+5Wow. you suck.
- puppetj, on 02/18/2008, -3/+1Dugg for www.revision3.com,
- reventlov, on 02/17/2008, -8/+10Is ditching your TV without a substitute too radical an idea? I did it a decade ago and it was quite liberating. I still win all Simpsons trivia contests because nobody gives a ***** about the last 10 seasons. Also, if you ditch your cable subscription and keep your cable modem.. you're not ditching the cable company at all. Only those on ADSL would be completely free of the cable company, but on the flip side they're stuck with their local telco. Hardly a win.
- bingobongony, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2So, your reasn for needing a TV is to win Smpsons trivia contests?
- RobotBuddha, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1Too radical an idea for a lot of people. I can see where you're coming from with the idea of it feeling liberating. And it might to a lot of people who have a problem handling TV. But for everyone else, limiting their options is a net decrease in freedom, not the other way around.
- apologeticus, on 02/17/2008, -0/+7The video quality on Joost is awful. I use it to show old episodes of GI Joe to my kids, but that's about it.
- my10cent, on 02/18/2008, -0/+0I agree the idea of Joost is awesome but for now the quality is bad, it is bad when it lacks on a 5mps connection, because that is not even the smallest broadband available.
- dn11, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2Yep, the video quality is not very good, and the interface is wacked (at least the last time I tried it - which was some months ago). It is "nice to look at" but also super clunky and lagged. The one thing I like about Hulu is the video quality and speed - whatever compression they are using should become the standard.
- puppetj, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1I have no issue with it, works great, i can can see it easily from my tv, unlike hulu, etc...
- SilenceGold, on 02/17/2008, -0/+14All those are useless for deaf and hard of hearing people. No subtitles or closed captions available.
Save those old "can't hear you" jokes.- antdude, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1Yeah, it would be nice to have what Google Video do. Have an option to transcribe for those who want to do it.
- bingobongony, on 02/18/2008, -1/+2They are all useless for people with perfect hearing too. Unless you want crappy or old episodes.
- Link459, on 02/17/2008, -2/+34Or just use some ***** torrents and stream to your TV using something...
- tehshingen, on 02/17/2008, -0/+9Ditch your Cable Company with Free, Legal Alternatives using your Cable Modem. (Unless you have DSL.)
- Smurph0404, on 02/17/2008, -1/+5These are nice but most of the shows featured are network shows. You don't need cable to watch network shows. You just need a Digital TV and an antenna. I'm not going to drop my comcast account until I can replace the CABLE programs I would be loosing. This also make no mention of sports broadcasts. These site are cool, but it is very unrealistic to consider them replacements for cable at this point.
- cidman2001, on 02/18/2008, -1/+1I can think of a lot of other reasons to ditch your Comcast account...assuming you have an alternative of course. What a bunch of crooks!
- mattcampbell, on 02/17/2008, -4/+6http://eztv.it

Posted on Feb 17th, 2008 by peacefulspirit_joyfulsoul_bliss : FiddleMaestro peacefulspirit_joyfulsoul_bliss
Dear Friends on GAIA, formerly zaadz..
I have observed a typical "Control-freak" pattern in the actions of Microsoft, specially after they introduced the Windows XP home and Pro versions.
First of all, when we BUY a Product, it should by LAWFUL means, become "Ours" to use in any way we choose to"
But this doesn't ever happen with Microsoft Windows Loading CDs in the market. These days, they have a system called "You have to Digitally verify your product by Automatically accepting to allow Microsoft to have a Great control over your system, specially under Device management there is a zone called "security"'' Once you have done it at the very beginning, when you load the Software, you have given away your right to Privacy.
These people have Total control over your Computer and at any given time they can "Nuke" your Security of the Computer and send patches to "Lock it" Even when you are logged ina s an "Administrator" you can't undo this part. Then after a while, your XP home would go DEAD for no reason and you can't find any Customer Support from Microsoft, because it is they who have Nuked it in the first place. If you want your Privacy to be intact, start using only Apple products sucha s Macintosh or have your own System made either with Lunux platform or Unix based platforms.
If consumers start banishing their products, Microsoft can be brought down to their knees. It is our money that they are amassing as their wealth. We have to strip them off these Monopolistic tactics.
Their recent attempt to take over Yahoo was a big eye opener for many.
Here is what I learned from my Banker (name undisclosed)-- When I was chatting with him very casually about opening a "Business account" for a small Non Profit organization I have started, he narrated to me all the technicalities and technological aspects of the Networking the Banks now have. Everything is controlled by Microsoft. All your information that you feel is pretty safe, is being controlled by Microsoft.
If anybody has a different opinion about what I am writing here, can very well Suffer at the hands of Microsoft--sooner or later--
Say no to Slavery at the hands of anyone, whether it is Bush-Cheney-Rums, or Chevron-Mobil-Microsoft-Google-WalMart.

- tgc1, on 02/17/2008, -1/+1I think you can still get internet without a cable plan. They provide you the cable, but you don't get TV. Ask them.
- RandomGuySteve, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2Hilarious. Internet without Cable: 55 dollars a month. Cable and Internet Bundled? 60 dollars.
- tgc1, on 02/18/2008, -7/+0So then, logically, TV without internet is 10 bucks? That's some cheap *****' cable.
- dojonz, on 02/18/2008, -0/+260 - 55 = 5

- qhor, on 02/17/2008, -1/+8My cable TV and cable internet are supplied by the same company. I have a problem following this article's advice.
There again, there was that show on the other day, with YouTube clips on cable TV. All I could think of was that comment about "We have gone full circle... YouTube on TV". I'm counting down the days until an article pops up about "Ditching YouTube for YouTube on cable TV". - jacobmorrison, on 02/17/2008, -0/+1I like http://www.myeasytv.com/, because its free and it has real live TV stations. Sites listed in the articles aren't really giving you real TV stations

- cadmiumpaint, on 02/17/2008, -0/+14There is a difference between watching a show, and fully enjoying it.
watching a tv show on the internet is OK. I wanted to catch up on Jericho season 1 before it started again..so i went over to CBS and watched the first season..AWFUL experience. First off the screen size is tiny. Maybe an inch squared. 2nd commercials that you can't skip through. Some times they would cut the action off mid conversation to show you a commercial. Third. BUFFERING. at some points it was horrible. Like 10 seconds of show, 20 seconds of buffer...Non stop..and yes i have a very fast connection. The video and sound quality was crappy at best full of compression artifacts and sound compression wierdness.
I would only watch a show or movie on the internet if i was desperate to catch up on a storyline. Its not enjoyable in any way.- puppetj, on 02/18/2008, -2/+2get tv out video card, i was able to watch those episodes full screen on my tv
- cadmiumpaint, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2i can't believe that something as full of square artifacts on a 1x1 inch sqare would look good on a 30" HD tv. I zoomed my screen in on my 15" laptop screen just so i could see more picture and it was horrible.
Like i said...there is a difference between watching a show for story line and actually enjoying your viewing experience. I like to see detail.

- kinggps, on 02/18/2008, -1/+1I agree with you on the commercials, etc, but you do realize that CBS video has a fullscreen mode, right?
I watched the last few Jericho eps full screen on my laptop... just like watching on a 17" LCD TV. Not ideal, I guess, but fine. Certainly not "1 inch squared" as you say- cadmiumpaint, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1i never saw it...i just went over there now and looked at an episode really quick...didn't see it either...they must burry it

- gleongelpi, on 02/17/2008, -3/+1You left out my favorite place: www.reeltime.com. No, it is not free, and it is more movies than TV, and the television shows are old. But the quality is very, very high. Right now, one can go to reelcash.com (or something like that), and get a $15 "gift card" (I don't know what else to call it) so that you can check it out. While the quality is as good as any place, it has a couple of drawbacks. First, you will have to download its GridPlayer. No big deal in my opinion, although I would rather it were embedded. Second, if doesn't work with some security software, and I think 64 bid Vista. I suspect those consumer who have trouble will quickly give it up instead of contacting the slow moving Support System. However, for those that do not experience any difficulties, this would be a very enjoyable experience. If you run a cable from your computer to your big screen, you will know what I mean when I say "quality".
- MrSwap, on 02/17/2008, -0/+1anyone know if it's possible to mask or spoof the country of your isp? I'm assuming it's because i'm canadian, but joost is missing a ***** of shows/channels (Top Gear, Jericho, etc.)
- Ellipsys, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2Depending on how deep their detection goes, would it be easier to just proxy through a US proxy? I know there are quite a few lists out there and if you don't require multiple hops, the speed shouldn't be too bad.
- looselips, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1I didn't try it (in US) but http://hotspotshield.com/
was listed at the top of http://openhulu.com/

- MtheoryX, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1They do? That's news to me. Care to provide a link to that requirement?

http://www.wortharchiving.com -> Legal Torrents, assuming you're not on comcast and can torrent... - MinnesotaTwins, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1Since I live in Iowa and have no way of watching or listening to the twins my only alternative is dish. I would even like to pay for mlb extra innings, or the online mlb package but the mlb considers the twins in my market along with like 8 other teams so all of the games are blacked out. It is ridiculous that I can't pay to watch my team play unless i want 300 other channels.
- topbob, on 02/18/2008, -0/+12its not illegal until someone catches you
http://thepiratebay.org - GOVATENT, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2This is pointless for some of us. What if the cable company is the internet company. What do we do. I can't have dish, and there is no Fiber internet here. Also, I am not using ATT-bellsouth dsl service. Even if they were the only ISP in the world.
- Evildudetx, on 02/18/2008, -1/+1Yeah, sorry, maybe in a few years when they carry the exact same content the cable company is providing, but until then, dream on.
- hiplibrarian, on 02/18/2008, -2/+2buried, for not enough offering access to canada.
- CColtManM, on 02/18/2008, -0/+3If any of these offer HDTV, this i'm in, otherwise, what point is dropping cable for SD on my computer?
- Scottievm, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2What if we want to watch shows on HBO? Oh right, then we need to hold on to our cable companies...
- lingum, on 02/18/2008, -1/+0HBO is in the toilet anyway so you're not missing anything.

Have watched all of Chuck and Journeyman on NBC's site and Terminator 2.5 on FoxHD which has been very good. - jasmus, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2For the price of "Broadband" here in Australia, I'm still better off with Austar (satellite) TV. I would love watch-on-demand TV, but the cost would be enormous over a month when I take into account bandwidth costs.

- Kr4t05, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1I plan on going TV-free once I get my own place. Most of the shows I do watch I can easily download via Bittorrent and RSS. And, otherwise, I can always bug someone else when there is a major sporting event that I want to watch.
I wonder if the cable companies are actually trying to think of a feasible way to bring their content online while making money. -
