- theexitwound, on 06/25/2009, -6/+48I tried to switch from Pidgin to Digsby but it felt bloated and incomplete. Its installation (including the couple dozen crapwares I had to uncheck first) was an IMMEDIATE turnoff as well. The less CPU usage is welcome, but the installation is very rough and the experience a letdown for me. PIdgin is far simpler in design and feels easier to use.
- internetisscary, on 06/24/2009, -8/+37dugg for DIGsby!
- AngelBunny, on 06/25/2009, -3/+29Are you suggesting that this is a better client than adium?
- undervalued, on 06/25/2009, -1/+27Ram's are a little tough and chewy, I prefer Lamb.
- aqrilik, on 06/25/2009, -4/+28Cool! Except I have to "decline" about 20 toolbars before installing..
- Klinky, on 06/25/2009, -0/+22Hello Time Traveler,
We people in the future greet you! Our web is now version 2.0 & our RAMs are multiple gigabytes. - Chairboy, on 06/25/2009, -1/+15The new improved stats are that it consumes 70-80 megabytes of RAM. Oh, I guess that's pretty goo-WHAAAAAA?!
This seems like an astonishingly high amount of memory consumption for an IM client. You know the idea of cooking a frog by slowly raising the temperature so he doesn't jump out? Well...
*ribbit*
It ain't easy being green. - diggcensors, on 06/25/2009, -3/+15sounds like Adium.
- theexitwound, on 06/25/2009, -0/+12I like it because it does the job of an IM client: chats and shares files. That's it. That's all I need it to do. That's all it does. Currently, I'm using AIM, Facebook Chat, and Gmail's chat within Pidgin and it's fantastic.
- Joest23, on 06/25/2009, -0/+12I dunno. I'm an XP user and I LOVE using Pidgin. Everything just makes sense. Sure, it is lacking in some areas (Can't change names on the fly in an IRC, you have to re-setup an account within Pidgin to do that), but it just feels right. Besides, Pidgin very rarely uses over 20,000k RAM, for me. 60,000k seems like WAY too much for an IM client.
It looks really nice, though. I like the MySpace, Twitter and Facebook support and the fact that it keeps logs server side rather than client side, but I'm going to stick with Pidgin until they improve on it a bit more. - LMN8R, on 06/25/2009, -2/+13Been using it and loving it far more than Pidgin for a long time now. In particular, I love how everything but chat history is saved server-side...just loaded it up on my laptop, and everything's set exactly how I want it right from the start.
- burntcookie90, on 06/25/2009, -1/+11what kind of comp are you running dude....64mb RAM??
- Termina, on 06/25/2009, -1/+10When I saw this over a year ago, Linux support was "Coming soon"...
- FIip, on 06/25/2009, -1/+10Digsby without spamware:
http://update.digsby.com/install/digsby_setup.exe - AgeofMastery, on 06/24/2009, -1/+10It just finished updating itself. I hope they really have gotten it's resource use under control.
- inactive, on 06/25/2009, -3/+11No linux version or OSX version.
Still not ready for primetime. - twiztidsinz, on 06/25/2009, -0/+7As a long time Trillian user, I'm a little upset with Astra... seems like the company is getting rather greedy and with Astra many more features are now premium, including Skin Colors.
- Hercules, on 06/25/2009, -2/+9I'm enjoying the beta for Trillian Astra.
It does everything, and everything reasonably well. It looks a bit gimmicky for my tastes but I don't care since the skins will be soon to follow. It's good on resource usage too. - remlap, on 06/25/2009, -0/+6/nick new name
- Memnochxx, on 06/25/2009, -0/+6It's in open beta.
- burntcookie90, on 06/25/2009, -1/+7idk man, im running a 2gig lappy on win7 and it's only using 40m. and its connected to 4 chat clients email and fb. this is huge progress from the 120 when i started using it almost a year and half ago. additionally cpu is at 0-1% on a dual core amd64bit at 1.8ghz. so i'm not complaining
- twiztidsinz, on 06/25/2009, -1/+7Still 1GB (1024MB) is well above 64MB...
16 times as much actually.
*****.. even my toaster has 64MB of RAM. - AndrewDB, on 06/25/2009, -5/+11Well.. 32 is half of 64... so.. yeah, it's probably logical that he's using 64 meg.
- armbar, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5It still sucks during that one time. Pidgin doesn't have ads and its installation is pretty easy. Same for Google Talk and all of Digsby's competitors.
- SPThom, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5I use Adium at home and Digsby at work... The social networking features (i.e. Twitter) in Digsby are much more usefully implemented than in Adium.
- SquareWheel, on 06/25/2009, -1/+6Download from this link to be able to install to a custom location. It doesn't have any of that crap the regular installer does either.
http://update.digsby.com/install/digsby_setup.exe - burntcookie90, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5thanks for the math, it was more of a surprise! your comp has 64mb ram wtf?! question.
- T3hJ3hu, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5Digsby won't be able to compete until it can handle chat rooms.
- LoneWolf01, on 06/25/2009, -1/+5Is the G15 that popular that even IM clients write for it? Wow... My keyboard was $7.
- kahoona1, on 06/25/2009, -3/+7No G15 support yet as far as I can see. :(
- dragoonkain, on 06/25/2009, -1/+5Yeah that's obscenely high. I'm using Trillian 4.0, which looks like a "fatter" client... and it's using up 12MB of RAM. (Astra, AIM, MSN and Facebook clients loaded.)
- Soakedd, on 06/25/2009, -1/+5Pedobear?
- inactive, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4You paid for yours?
- dtfinch, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4Their partnership with W3i, LLC, formerly freeze.com, which I caught repackaging my software with their malware bundle, combined with the fact that you're expected to trust their servers with all your IM passwords, ensures that I will never use or recommend Digsby.
- ldavid, on 06/25/2009, -1/+5I totally agree theexitwound.
Pidgin is bloat free and there are never any issues with it.
Pidgin could be a little more innovative I guess- but it does the job efficiently. - ryansinn, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3Dugg Down for the 6+ pieces of adware / crap that it tries to install.
- babbitblob, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3has anyone gotten past the font snafus between digsby and pidgin? I can't figure out which is using standard font sizes and which is displaying them too large.
- javaroast, on 06/25/2009, -1/+4Until it dumps the crapware installer altogether digsby is a non starter.
- DeathMarcher, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3I'm using Miranda, it's currently using just under 2MB, though I only have 2 protocols active. Not too happy with it though, I keep having to reconnect MSN manually even though it should be automatic.
- chongli, on 06/25/2009, -1/+4This is all academic. Google Wave is coming and it will crush all other IM and e-mail clients.
I can't wait, I'm sick of using all of these crappy communication tools with all their limitations. - jarofclay, on 06/25/2009, -3/+6I love Digsby and was using it daily until Trillian Astra beta came out.
http://www.trillian.im - JK1150, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2all you need
- pacerx, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2My old version is only using 30 MB right now....
- scy1192, on 06/25/2009, -1/+3using it right now. Looks prettier and has more features than Digsby. I switched from Digsby once it went public.
- twiztidsinz, on 06/25/2009, -3/+540MB is still too much for an IM client...
- Mysticcal, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2Yep. Trillian Astra got a ton better in recent months. I was so bored with 3.0 that I switched to Diggsby. Trillian astra ftw.
- burntcookie90, on 06/25/2009, -1/+3as opposed to running them all separately, i'm not complaining
- Shoey, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2I use the LCDMiscellany applet that comes with a Pidgin plugin. You can get it here: http://www.g15forums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39 ...
- twiztidsinz, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2Too bad DNF never even made it to Alpha...
- armbar, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2Yeah, Pidgin is at 14MB. 40MB harkens to the old days of AIM and MSN Messenger, and having to restart them every 2 hours because they would increasingly eat all 512mb ram.
