- 40bslove, on 10/12/2007, -10/+93Dont lie vlc is the only video player i need, but i love this program
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40vlc and this app have different functions.
also the linux version supposedly uses vlc for playback, I wouldn't know though because democracy crashes when i try to play vids in linux.
How ironic. - jiub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19VLC is for video playback/network streaming (probably not many users of that feature)
Democracy is a program that manages RSS video feeds. Think along the lines of iTunes video podcasts with the ability to add new feeds and better content management. - AhrenBa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I use VLC. Can someone tell me what Democracy does different/better? Thanks.
- cottonon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Go to http://tvRSS.net and get an RSS feed for almost any show, add it to Democracy and enjoy.
- velvethead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Think of Democracy player as iTunes, and VLC as Quicktime. The player actually has VLC built into it, using it for playback. The rest of the app is for finding, downloading, and organizing your media.
- Pause, on 10/12/2007, -10/+25i agree, it was a pretty killer app, but vlc is the only one for me.
- brad76r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14no... its open source, ergo no spyware
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11It's open source.
- Mooinakan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12On a less relevant note, their website looks great.
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13What, I'm the only person who uses mplayer? Come on, you can't get more lightweight than mplayer. As a matter of fact, it's the only player with which I can play 1080i videos on my old P4-M 2.2GHz with integrated video.
And bonus, you use it from the command line! - aidanr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@sishgupta

"Disabling gstreamer seems to fix the problem for now. You can do this by adding a key to your gconf.
* run gconf-editor
* add a key named "/apps/democracy/player/renderers" that's a list of strings
* add "xinerenderer" to that list"
the last couple of versions segfaulted on me when using gstreamer, this fixed it, although with 0.9.5 it seems to have been fixed
i like democracy alot, it's' definitely buggy at times and a bit of a resource hog, but it is the most feature complete podcatcher i've used to date - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14It uses VLC as the player part, I think even in the windows version. And I have never had a crash playing anything in linux with Democracy Player, then again I don't use ubuntu.
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Yes the page is down, but the link you just posted is for an older version.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The point of Democracy is its podcast management. It's not meant to serve as just another media player.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6bsplayer used to be incredible. It had a zillion features that were all immediately accessible with a right-click in fullscreen mode. There was always a retail and feature-limited free version, but the freeware was amazing.
Now bsplayer is totally riddled with very evil spyware. The program is ruined. I've since switched to Media Player Classic.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/
Thanks to the guardian angels at oldversion.com you can download all the good old versions of bsplayer.
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=bsplayer - computerdude33, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm fairly (NOT VERY) sure that the OS X version of Democracy uses VLC as a fallback- it uses QuickTime most of the time.
- ravrore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5here's the direct link to the windows version:
http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/pculture.org/democracy/win/Democracy-0.9.5.exe
mac version:
http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/pculture.org/democracy/osx/Democracy-0.9.5.dmg - madfusion15, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6last time i tried this app it was the biggest memory hog, in fact every time i left it open the memory usage would keep increasing..anyone know if it's been fixed?
- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+59GB of RAM? I guess that's possible if you buy one with four 2GB sticks and then add one yourself, but why? Was there really something that needed an extra gig after the 8 you already had (assuming you are telling the truth). I'm sorry but I'm just a little bit curious...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This program is really great, I've been using it for awhile. It's so easy to add feeds and auto download your shows in the morning..
- spikespeigel42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4THANK GOD! Proxy support! My school has a proxy for EVERYTHING, so without proxy support, I can't see if its worth all the hype.
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@soogy: I use mplayer too! It's fast.
- sotopheavy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Everyone in this thread seems to like vlc. I have never used it or heard of it until now. Besides it's multiple file support, why does everybody give it so much credit? I know there is a website about it, but I am more interested in first hand testimony.
- fleetskeet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When are they going to make it remember your last playback position in a video?
- markdr123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Does it still rape your computer when run though? Leaving the last version running for a few minutes meant it used 200,000K mem usage.
- mediatedthought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Try Yahoo Pipes, or search del.icio.us with a custom url like http://del.icio.us/tag/system:filetype:avi or replace 'avi' for 'mov' or whatever filetype you want. You can set up specific youtube search pages as feeds, ie you could search for "Richard Dawkins" set it to download all newly posted videos with that tag.
- antechinus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why doesn't it support television cards? It is not TV otherwise.
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@aidnr
Amazing, thank you so much!
Until now I had been going to ~/.democracy/Movies/ and would watch the movies manually in vlc. - alamko1999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now you have vlc for video, democracy for internet tv, songbird for songs, firefox for browser. Long live free open source software!!!
- BocoDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think I've downloaded and deleted this a couple of times now. They always make it sound so cool, and then it turns out to be the worst piece of bloatware around. Slow download speeds (it's not just that you can't tweak settings... it was just SLOW), poor interface, poor system to allow people to watch things their way (yeah right... I'm really going to use your integrated video player.... Even if it is VLC at its core, there are a billion reasons users would rather just use their own player of choice).
Have they fixed this stuff?
Great features on paper... let us know when it works.... - madfusion15, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3nice, thanks
- brad76r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If your like me when you saw this you were wondering what the new features were, why is it worth the d/l... so here you are... I'm still not going to use this program too terribly much until they build it so you can specify your upload speed. As it is it cripples my surfing when I use it 'cause it uploads at full speed and ***** w/ my connection. Anyway, enough griping: here's the changelog, pasted from their site, http://www.getdemocracy.com/news/
What’s new in this version:
Refined interface. simpler, smoother, easier to use.
Share menu. New ’share’ menu on each item lets you email a video or post to Video Bomb, del.icio.us, Digg, or Reddit.
Partial proxy support. We are halfway done with proxy support. You should be able to use Democracy Player with no problems, but you won’t be able to access the Channel Guide from within the player. You can get to the channel guide on the web here.
VLC 0.8.6 on Windows. We’ve upgraded the version of VLC that powers Democracy Player for Windows. This version has much better flash video support for sites like YouTube.
Videos stored in folders by channel. Videos that you download from video feeds will now be stored in a folder with the name of the channel. This should keep things much more organized.
Pause / Resume downloads. Long awaited! You can now pause and resume any download or all downloads.
Better BitTorrent support. BitTorrent performance is significantly improved.
Show seeding on torrents. In the downloading tab, you can see all the torrents you are currently seeding and you can stop them if you choose to.
Drop-down for auto-download. There’s a new drop-down menu on each channel that let’s you set the Auto-Download mode without going into the channel settings.
Thumbnail generation on OSX. On Mac, if you have downloaded a video that doesn’t have a thumbnail, we will make one automatically.
‘Details’ section. Each video item has a ‘details’ button that will show you any additional information we have about the video. This includes details about torrent status, the filename of the video, the full description, etc.
Retry downloads on network errors. If your internet connection gets interrupted or if something else goes wrong with a download, Democracy Player will automatically retry. Very helpful.
Bug fixes and other little touches.
That’s a lot of new stuff, let us know what you think! - biggrz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Vista + Democracy Player + DivX/Xvid AVI's = black screen and no sound
- SnowFire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I tried it for a week on the last release before this one.
Some bugs are persistent, like downloaded and watch videos reappear as unwatched, crashes while downloading and deleting at the same time, and where is the video zoom option? It almost by default stretches the video to the size of the window and it can look horribly pixelated in some cases.
It is promising but still has a ways to go before a true "Killer App" status. - SquigglyP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I tried this app a couple of times, and it was a huge disappointment both times. Video looked like ass, sound would lose sync, some of the vids would be too dark to even see anything, and the fact that it just downloads a ***** of stuff without asking first. VLC blows as well, but is at least useful sometimes.
Media Player Classic or nothing. - fLUx1337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Its a GREAT program.....but its alittle ***** up on my computer, so cant use it!
My problem is that its just like its squashed down really small, and its in the top left of my screen! :(
Cant use it, tried reinstalling....still the same!! :( - gameguy43, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4it doesnt validate. is it so hard to close your tags?
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I can see why you do, its VLC with search and video feeds/downloads.
Yes please!
I do like the simplicity of just having VLC for the majority of my video, but this is cool too.
If only it would stream the videos where the file size permits.. like videos from youTube. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use VLC but I'm talking about for Internet TV. Democracy Player, Zudeo and Joost all seem to offer something different.
- merle2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It keeps freezing for me when it is trying to pull clips from the RSS feeds. If I try to use any other feature, it is unbearable slow. Too bad, it really looks like a great program. (I'm on OS X PPC as well)
- iamshades, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4i remember when it first released, soo many bugs..
- starheart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's lack of keyboard shortcuts are a major draw back. It has a few, but not enough. Even the ones it does have suck.
Also VLC sucks for streaming from a web server on the lan, in that it won't fast forward or rewind. At least for the videos I watch. I switch to gomplayer for better streaming support.
Democracy's general idea seems cool though. - Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Democracy Player is simply Amazing and lightweight on resources to boot.
- crunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm wonder if it still cains resources like before... not everyone has dual core + multi gig ram yet
- feek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this seems pretty cool, but so far i get audio, but no video. i'm guessing it probably has something to do with vista, but you'd think they would test it since it's a new version
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i've tried democracy several times and always found it too lethargic and buggy to be of any real use. but, i'll take another look at this point release and see if improvements have been made.
- renegadeafk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1uses 12 megs for me
- pixelmixer, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8I was never able to get the linux version of democracy player to work right. The video always had problems.
- wlloydda, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Democracy Player is totally based on VLC, in Windows and *nix, so give the VLC project the credit they deserve.
