- M4v3rIC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Windows Vista is still beta.
- Katsushiro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Site's up on my end.
- blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Great feature. But it's not new. It's been here nearly since the start (on mac at least).
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i've used this in the past and been disappointed. i'll give this new release a try, thanks!
- JSchwage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5And guess what? This version now uses over 100 MB of memory! I think I can do without it as long as it's going to use that much memory.
- jeromeerome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have 70+ video feeds I have been keeping up with using Democracy players release candidate version a few weeks ago. Version 0.8.5 can handle a whole lot more that you throw at it than older versions. No crashes so far.
- orlyyarly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I really like Democracy but does it download unbearable slowly (~5kbps) for anyone else? I don't know if it is the Mac version (PPC) or my router. I would open up a port for it, but I haven't been able to find out what port Democracy uses to download.
Of course, I haven't downloaded this new release (I'm at work), but I will when I get home. - NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ jguy584: Bullsh*t. The majority of people don't amount to those standards even if they have plenty of available ram. Five ram munching programs running simultaneously can cripple most modern computers and that doesn't even account for CPU usage.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the ubuntu flavor was barfing on libpango version which meant you had to force it which meant you had to uninstall to apt-get dist-upgrade and again with the force install of dp which leads to saying ***** and just watching youtube or googlevideo
- NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does it use less ram in this release? I can't help but shy away from programs that use exorbitant amounts of ram unless they are too good to use anything else. A prime example of that would be Firefox.
- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's downloading just as fast as my broadband will let it here. Be aware that there is a preference (on by default) that thottles download speeds when the computer is active.
The app itself uses up an awful lot of CPU on this 800MHz G4 though. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I installed the democracyplayer-data deb packages and the democracyplayer package and when I run "democracyplayer" in the terminal I get this error:

What gives? - kruykaze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'll wait until it supports external torrent clients like AZUREUS .
- rotten777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Definite digg. I think this is the direction "cable" companies should point for the future.
Great stuff! - treed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because the red button closes a window, not an application.
- davidlow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The red button is grayed out so I have to choose Quit from the menu or Force Quit from the Dock. Why would a developer go out of his way to inconvenience his users like that?
- andrewguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it me or is the torrent handler still slow? I'm only downloading at 15k and its got lots of seeds.
- wildkarde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1damn, its still crashing on me.
- gr8whitesavage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been waiting a long time for the Intel-Mac version. Thanks!
- MercX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually the ram usage is awful on this program. The program itself is great, but I left it running over night and it grew to over 1.8GB of ram being used. The program ended up locking up. After closing the program ram usage dropped to 350MB. That was ridiculous. Awesome program, but BAD MEMORY LEAK or something.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Best New Feature? BitTorrent Support!!!
- WorldGroove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ImportError: libgtkembedmoz.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"
Google that last line... :-) Plenty of stuff to read apparently. - nexus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It also does this with java based programs too such as limewire and azureus, for video I'm pretty sure it depends on the codec the video is encoded with that determines whether glass is disabled. You cant do much about it, but on the other hand you don't really need glass for the duration of the video since you probably arnt doing anything else besides watching video, not using windows.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ok, just did an install of the democracy player on Ubuntu Edgy Eft without problem
nice work
wget http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/pculture.org/democracy/linux/ubuntu/democracyplayer-data_0.8.5-1ubuntu_all.deb
wget http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/pculture.org/democracy/linux/ubuntu/democracyplayer_0.8.5-1ubuntu_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i demo*.deb
shows up in the menu or run it commandline
democracyplayer - jguy584, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Works great for me, torrent downloads are a tad slow but sites with hosted content are pretty fast.
- nexus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1+digg for just being a universal binary!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just wanted to say I love the Democracy player. All those videos in one place, and it downloads them and organized them for you. Awesome. Saw lots of stuff in there, that in the rocketboom and ask_a_ninja dominated world, I didn't know existed. Plenty of gems. Documentaries are my favorite.
- pairanoyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No go on Suse 10.0
No rpm and won't compile from source either. - natmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It just keeps getting better and better. Back when I first started using Democracy (0.7.something) it was rather flaky, but it's really becoming a solid product now.
- treed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes it is a beta, but part of the reason they have public betas is so that developers can get their products to work with the new versions before it gets released. I'm not saying they should drop everything and work on this, but I'm pretty sure Aero Glass will still work this way when Vista drops, so it's something they should be looking into.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1FINALLY!
Intel-Mac version! - aexny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can't wait for a Windows Mobile version to come out. Unfortunately, the port VLC for WinCE isn't all that stable right now... but at least there's something. Having a mobile platform would seriously boost viewership. I've been stopped multiple times on the subway by onlookers wondering what/how I'm watching (TCPMP player, vid extracted from Tivo).
Perfect scenario: Having a standalone player which can automatically turn on the device in the middle of the night and start downloading. Bonus points if it can detect power state and download a limited set if only on battery power.
A man can dream... - jfox00, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You who might know? Someone in the democracy support forum.
- superzorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very useful What an epatage!
- GriffonJames, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Installed easily with no problems. Selected a video I wanted to watch to download and then went to bed. When I looked again in the morning, I had virtual memory shortage errors appearing. The download was complete, so I rebooted. Started Democracy again to see if the download works. Yup! Closed the player completely. Came back to the computer 6 hours later and again saw virtual memory shortage errors. Looked at the running processes, and sure enough, there was a Democracy process running (though nothing appears in my Taskbar), and it was at 256 meg of RAM. The network connection was running full throttle. I watched Democracy's RAM consumption climb to 266 meg over several minutes before shutting down the process. WTF? Something's not right.
- jt32470, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks I'll upgrade for windows :D
Now if i could get video/xgl to work for Suse 10.1 I'd get it under Linux instead :x - evamedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or command-q
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this player really does kick ass
- eihwaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't get why should i use this, since i can't sync it with my iPod (where i watch/listen to most of my podcasts).
I'm sure it's a great app, but I'll stick to iTunes just for that reason. - chrism1128, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I like it better than i-Tunes.
It does a nice job of combining what is a complicated workflow.
Bit Torrent, Feedreader, Itunes, then playlists.
It's just more smooth. - audioseed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1@ chicken101
thanks for the info. You need to install mozilla-browser. try that. it worked for me so I located your file and ran a dpkg -S [filename] on it. That tells me what package that file belongs to. In this case it is mozilla-browser.
When I run into errors like this the first thing I do is try "locate [file]". If the file doesn't show up then you are most likely missing a package. Then you can either google the file name or guess from this that you need to install mozilla-browser. - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2mac users might want to check out newsfire (at
http://newsfirerss.com ). it recently added video podcast support and it works wonderfully... it's not open source and it doesnt support torrenting, but these are small prices to pay for a program that is enjoyable to use (and its pretty flawless). i love the democracy initiative - but its not anything new or innovative - jguy584, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2100MB isnt large anymore...
- treed, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4My only issue with Democracy really is that it doesn't play nice with Aero Glass. There's probably an API you have to use to get it to not disable Aero Glass while playing. Other than that, nice stuff. I only wish there were more good vidcasts that updated regularly.
- dncnyoyo, on 10/12/2007, -23/+1Site down or bad link.
