- iZZm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It is true. I run a small business in Coventry in the UK and have recently ordered and installed several new Dell worksations in a couple of local businesses. All came with firefox installed. It isn't the default browser, but as XP doesn't have IE, My Computer and My Documents icons on the desktop by default, it is initially the only browser icon on the desktop when first booted.
- theWaterboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2agreed! the point is that Firefox is being used by a mainstream computer company! As a web designer-- that makes me happy.
Is Opera better than IE, or FF?? It really doesn't matter, because the push to involve ANY standards compliant browser (in this case FF) into the mainstream means we all can have a better internet experience.
I say 'thank you' Dell, for recognizing a need exists! If only Microsoft would make IE7 standards compliant we could simply choose what we want based on features rather than IF it will render a site correctly.
--- just my 2 cents.. - jodamiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3jaxim: "Stop being the spelling/grammar police/Nazis. If you understood what the poster meant, then let the typo/mistake go. Stop being so anal!"
The people who say that are usually just as poor a speller or just as lazy as to not look up words. I can understand when people didn't want to haul out a large book to look up words, but you can do it in seconds now thanks to the wonderful thing known as the "Internet".
Furthermore, according to Merriam-Webster, neither "trialling" nor "trailing" are in the dictionary. "Trial" is a noun or an adjective, it is not a verb.
Horrendous misuse of the language just makes you look dumb. Digg has a spell checker built in now, for crying out loud! It's really fine though, because when I submit an application and resume for a job with perfect grammar and spelling and others don't, it'll be just that much better for me. - prateek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yea, my mum bought one of these and it came with firefox! Go Firefox!
- shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DELL ALREADY MAKES AMD machines
had to make that in caps to catch more attention :)
too many people complaining Dell doesn't have AMD machines when it actually does :)
They haven't marketed them but if you check the lineup they have several machines with AMD chips in 'em - rurm, on 03/06/2009, -0/+1I have to say. I just recently finally tried Opera.
... XPS - Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Microsoft must be *****' green apples over this one. They will be calling Dell RSN to "educate" them. Same as they did to William F Zachman when he favoured OS/2. GO DELL
- rurm, on 09/29/2009, -0/+1http://digg.com/users/rurm
- rydawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the article is a little short on detail, but it sounds good to me!
I think AMD is a good choice for Dell too. I've had a desktop for five years now with a GHz AMD CPU and the thing still runs fine. I think the only think holding Dell back may be Price, and the fact that all their customers who were used to getting 2.4 GHz machines will be a little put out when they see they are now getting 1.5GHz, or something like that. To the general public that may seem like a step down.
Of course, with all the proper marketing, that effect could be nullified. Just look at Microsoft and what it's done with it's defective software and game consoles......sorry I had to. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have to say. I just recently finally tried Opera. It kicks the crap out of IE or FF. It integrates better the FF, is faster than both the other browsers, and just overall has a smoother feel to it. I would suggest you guys give the free version (no more ads etc..) a try.
- capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Probably a smart move on Dell's part. One of the biggest expenses a computer company has in this day and age is assisting users with removal of malware. Of course we know that IE is the Swiss cheese of browsers, so it stands to reason that Dell may be making a move here to minimize the amount of tech support on new PCs.
- ru1dt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Trailing's a word, but "trialling" still sucks. We here in the English dept. call that "verbing" a noun, which is one of the ugliest bastardizations of the language. There are actually other words out there that mean what "trialling" is supposed to.
Excuse me, I have to get back to computering. - tonyeccles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got a new dell pc last week and the Firefox icon was on the desktop.
Not sure if it was the default browser though as I would of automatically clicked on "make default browser" when firefox ran out of habbit.
I was impressed.
What I wasn't impressed at were the half dozen or so ISP packs pre-installedl, including about 7 embedded apps and services from AOL.
Took me 4 hours to "clean" the pc. - clowry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can confirm this as well. I bought an XPS laptop in the UK which came with Firefox on the desktop. Not the default browser but save me from having to download and install it! Was quite pleasantly surprised to see the icon there.
- ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I heard Dell also ship with IE on machines.
- brettotte1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Wow. If you think that just because you "get" what he means when he says "trialling" that it should be a real word...um...you must be the ones using "conversate" too.
I frickin' HATE THAT. CONVERSATE is NOT A WORD EITHER & it's used on TV, the net, in conversations as well.
Stop the madness people! Learn to speak & spell like an intelligent person. - FRAGaLOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wouldn't this go against their agreement with Microsoft? I'm sure MS is pissed off.
- jodamiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0recursive: "Since you're being so pedantic, I have to point out that actually, "trailing" is in the dictionary."
The word used was "trialling", not "trailing". "IA", not "AI". - headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Dell now needs to go AMD. They must be getting great deals on Intel chips, because as we all know, AMD chips are generally cheaper than Intel, and since Dell is all about selling ultra-cheap PCs, it would only make sense to use AMD to make those PCs cost even less.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just awesome....Dell & Microsoft are both giving firefox a huge boost. IE7 (firefox)!!!
- 1gunit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just because i have a larger vocabulary than some of you is no reason to get all bent out of shape over it. in all reality i coped the word from the source of the post. the inquirer is not a US web site so some of there wording is a little different for those that think the internet is only available in the USA. maybe you should ask you english teachers before you harp on my ass. . . that is if they teach english in your 2nd grade class you morons
- burndive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"testing" "installing" "offering" "trying" etc.
So many valid options! Why? - Jaxim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0but is it the default browser on those computers? That's the real question!
- GeekyGirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is way cool (if it is true). What a great way to expand the market share / user base of Firefox!
- ThePharaoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AMD, Firefox, and a pre-load of OpenOffice...now we're talking some competition!

- h2d2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There goes there MS OEM discount.
Dell is stupid. - lilfroger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why are they only doing it in the UK??? Are they trying to say that US PC users are not good enough or something??? Come on Dell change your state-side image too!
- D4r7h3v1l, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this is good, but think of the average Dell user. Even if firefox is installed, they still won't know what it is and they probably won't even use it.
- jo42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeppers, wish we could buy Dell servers with AMD chips inside...
- theslimshady, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is true; I installed a new Dell PC for a customer on Tuesday this week and it had Firefox, I texted a m8 to let them know coz it's so amazing.
- drunkjack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3""Trialling"??? That isn't even a word! Can anyone on digg or the internet SPELL???"
No, and when you point it out, they tend to get all haughty about it.
The internet is full of retards. - republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I always build my own PCs, but I ordered a laptop for a client. After I got the computer in the mail, I noticed that it was full of spyware and bulky programs. My laptop, which is a dell, is over a year older and has half the ram yet it was able to perform 10x better than this new one. I was just so shocked on how much crap (including spyware) was on it.
This firefox on dell computers is way cool. (when will it be in the states/Canada?)
Digg++ - ru1dt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sry, got distracted. Firefox is a good idea, but I think a lot of users (I'm thinking mainly of novices who would buy a Dell as opposed to building something) probably won't take advantage of everything Firefox can do, like tabbed browsing. And as someone said, some won't even know what a Firefox is.
And don't be bringing UK dictionaries into this. They invented the language, but colours? What's up with that? - troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got a new dell yesterday with windows xp home, No firefox installed. Guess its only business machines.
- TheBurt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, since installing firefox is a basic security upgrade to any windows computer, this doesnt come as much of a surprise.
- RobCowie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is "up" with 'colours'?
- worldpilgrim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is true, I was installing a brand new Dell for a client about a week ago and Firefox was included.
- DephexTwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, trialling is wrong, both technically and pragmatically. If you want to use "trial" in a verb-like way, that's where you use "try" or "try out".
After all, where do you think "trial" comes from? - Jaxim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1jodmiller:
"The people who say that are usually just as poor a speller or just as lazy as to not look up words. I can understand when people didn't want to haul out a large book to look up words, but you can do it in seconds now thanks to the wonderful thing known as the "Internet"."
I'm not the best of spellers but I personally spell check all my postings, (using a Firefox extension called Spellbound). However, the people who usually complain about such little things like spelling mistakes, (like complaining when someone accidentally types "thier" instead of "their"), are usually the kind of people who have a stick up their butts.
Get a life. The next time you see a typo on a blog, breathe deeply and just ignore it. - DewayneSmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love my Dell laptop just the way it is, so quit bitching about a good company. No cheap ass parts on this machine.
- republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This is true, I was installing a brand new Dell for a client about a week ago and Firefox was included."
Where do you live at? - FuManchu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sorry.
I got distracted.
Merlinhoot's poem was SO FREAKIN' ON THE MONEY that I forgot what I was going to say!! - jrepin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very smart move. Now we should only see more Dell PCs with AMD Athlon 64 processors inside and they would be close to perfect.
- vlademonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jodamiller: re-read your own post, you said 'trailing':
'Furthermore, according to Merriam-Webster, neither "trialling" nor "trailing" are in the dictionary.' - FuManchu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SORRY.
I'm almost sober again.
As an ex-editor, I care deeply about the English language in a way that irritates my friends and casual contacts.
HOWEVER,
The language is actually a living thing. As such, it does change. And like unto our horrid teenage children who sometimes get arrested on Halloween night for mischief, it doth not alway change Ye way one would prefer.
I do take a stand against "ebonics" and against Corporatese, and against the deplorable Academic prejudice against EVER saying anything in the active voice. ["It was determined that many participants were experiencing ***** ***** at a statistically significant rate."]
Nevertheless:
"Trialling" IN FACT does express in ONE word what is meant. In market research, a trial is being undertaken. Suitable for a headline, IM-NS-HO. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0soon they willl switch to linux hopefully
---------------------------
www.frontlinetech.blogspot.com - smithco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, according to the OED online (which is by far the most complete and authoratative catalogue of the english language), 'trialling' is not a word.
- crome808, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dell have recently started selling boxed AMD processors - http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productlisting.aspx?Page=productlisting.aspx&spagenum=1&items_per_page=25&orderby=mfg_name,%20short_description&sortdirection=&image_flag=True&show_summary=True&category_id=6197&brandid=&sku=&mnfsku=&SearchType=&Pageb4Search=&ModelSelection=&iCompatid=&selectiontypeids=&l=en&c=us&cs=04&SubmitSearch=&servicetag=&ManufactSelection=&ModelName=&category_name=&RPU=&reset=True&prst=&prEnd=&InStock=&refurbished=&fe=&mnf=116&k=
- tmcleroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0now im convinced that if i were ever to buy a pc (as opposed to building one) it'd be a dell. and by the way, they do sell amd procs seperately from their computers
