These are boot cd's that have various tools ranging from partitioning to antivirus to sys/hardware scanners. They're pretty useful tools if you work on pc's alot like at a helpdesk or as a side business - ZeNiTRaM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11And miniPE contains:
-Windows XP files... LOTS of them.
-Partition Magic 8 -> WAREZ.
-Norton AntiVirus and McAfee AntiVirus -> WAREZ.
-Nero -> WAREZ.
-WindowBlinds -> WAREZ.
Anyway, nevermind, added it to downloading queue. - Nodren, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11i'm surprised noone has questioned if this is a legit free download or warez... hirent's boot cd contains partition magic which i know isnt free.
- linuxrebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Oringo - More fact checking on your part as well. Linux has full read write on NTFS However it's not by default enabled in most distro generic kernels because of the plethora of versions of NTFS and its variants that prevent effective testing. Especially on the older versions of NTFS.
Then as if that isn't enough there is also the ability to use a Linux wrapper on a native NTFS dll. Finally one can always use wine to do the writing.
Check out http://www.linux-ntfs.org/ for more information. Then be a critic - Luuvitonen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Correct me if I'm mistaken, but some of those tools in Hiren's boot cd must be illegal as in "warez". I doubt they are not so called evaluation versions because most of them are crippled somehow and don't actually work.
- Ericular, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Wonder if I'd make the front page if I linked to a torrent of Adobe CS2 Premium? Illegal is illegal, no matter if it's software for convenience or recovery in emergencies, right? If you screwed yourself, pay for some software to get out of a pinch. If you're a business and your customer is screwed, wtf are you doing not buying the software -- you're making profit off of it, and it's a write-off.
Doing business illegally makes for unfair competition against those of us who offer computer services honestly and legally. :( - joesnow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8lol doesn't matter to me "HOW" i get things fixed, this compilation provides tools that're typically very inconvenient to acquire and/or compile into one package. It's a valuable tool for people who're always fixing computers, it allows those of us who actually work on major projects to get the stupid little things out of the way when someone's Dell laptop jacks up for some new reason never addressed before...instead of researching what i need to do, i can just pop in and boot this CD, pick a tool, and vwalla, working recovery.
Just because you don't know what it is doesn't make it worthless, for those of us who actually work in the tech field directly this is an awesome tool. And, my job isn't "at stake" for using this CD, my organization doesn't know nor do they care how I fix computers, and I'm not installing locatable illegally liscensed software on workstations, so who cares. It's a little CD that sits on my computer, and when legality comes into question, i can just put the CD 'away' and nobody would know.
This isn't anything to do with 'right or wrong', this is just popular and very useful tools to help techs out. If an organization actually directly used any one of these specific tools on a regular basis in most activities they perform, then yes, by all means buy'm. ;-p - raptorGT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8That's lame. LAME. But thanks for the porn. I'll be sure to share it with my boss when he asks about it - which he will. Next time you ***** post something "interesting" be sure to include if it's NOT safe for work. Thanks.

I use Hiren's all the time. It has just about any recovery program you would ever need. - echosierratwo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10awww, come on. just because he said amazing? hahahahahahahaha!
- silverstrike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5mrdan:
Tried the new version of Knoppix? Supports NTFS read/write - echosierratwo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Well if your a MIS/IT Tech Support dude, its pretty much the holy grail of tech tools and pretty much self explanatory. In a nutshell, they are tools that allow you to troubleshoot all aspects of a computer, hardware and software. I carry it with me at all times on site (my job) and off (my clients).
- theman8631, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Its a combination of a bunch of boot disks with too many programs to try to find out what they do to help you troubleshoot stuff. Some stuff on there is worth the download. If your a tech check it out otherwise eh.
- madeingermany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Can you give more specifics? What did avast find?
A lot of antivirus programs tag system tools falsely.... - djpolstee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I love knoppix too but sometimes, its tuff to load knoppix into the ram because of its size. With these boot cds, only individual apps are being loaded not an entire os, so its a little easier on the ram
- yottabite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The software in Hiren's BootCD is in fact not all free as in beer, nor OSS.
A good example is PowerQuest PartionMagic (now owned wholly by Symantec).
It's an older version, and is copyrighted software.
It is not crippled in any way, is fully functional, and this boot cd, though interesting, is unfortunately guilty of containing pirated software.
On the other hand, should you already own the software, these tools are indespensible.
The only thing that will confuse people is the amount of redundancy since there are many tools on the CD that do exactly the same thing (better or worse), but have confusing names.
Something NOT included on this disk, but should be (easy to make a multiboot DVD - http://msfn.org ) is BartPE, the live Windows install that is free, gives you a Windows-like GUI, and can do most of the functions in this CD - http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
As always, your mileage may vary. - linuxrebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I did forget one thing. The link to a project called captive. This gives you full NTFS read write under 2.4 or 2.6 kernels. http://www.jankratochvil.net/project/captive/
- Bfloeagle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3oringo:
Just playing devils advocate, but can't you already remove infected files??? Overwrite could definately allow renaming the files but Oreilly is guiding people through removing them too... I haven't tried myself, but it looks like removing is possible.

Book site - http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/knoppixhks/index.html - madeingermany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This CD once saved my life! Ok, it saved my data, when Windows decided to eat the MBR of the HDD containing all my Digital Pictures. Thanks for the update :)
- stringmun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I can tell you this much....Hirens Boot CD has saved my butt on many occasions because I work in a computer repair business. I call it "The Ultimate Butt Saver" For those who work in this industry "get it" and you'll soon find out you cant live without it.
- MrDan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I find knoppix good for low level stuff like RAM testing. But if I have to remove a virus preventing an XP machine from booting, or extract some files from an NTFS partition or remove spyware on an XP machine then I find that a Windows based boot CD is much more practical.
- lalee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nice disc, but DAMN, those sidebar ads aren't exactly work-environment friendly.
If you're gonna do a rescue-disc, at least put it on a page where I won't get into trouble downloading it. - JamesGHill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ditto this comment. At least a NSFW tag in the future, please.
- sniper668, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What irony? Whoever posted the story made no mention of the fact that some of the software on the CD isn't being distributed legally.
- jadewolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Um ok the whole virus thing is stupid, the software on this thing is designed to eradicate everything on your computer . . . hmm sounds like viral behavior to me, but wait why are these viruses popping up here, well little timmy these programs use the very same algorithms and create the same signatures as those viruses, which . . . yup do the same thing . . . oi, I mean honestly put a copy of a CMOSwiper on your hard drive and watch your virus scan go wild with viral anticipation. Relax kiddies, it's ok to use this thing.
- yomommanow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4anyone else find a trojan in this while downloading?!?!?!?! avast pulled a trojan out of one of the programs... thankfully before the torrent finished and i tried to use it... be warned!!
- BobbyOnions, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The irony! Being concerned about the graphics (simple option in IE/FireFox) but not worried about the warez - the fact that they *are* warez and the fact that they could be virus-ridden etc.
- Catalyst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I know this is OT but I just realized that Opera 9 has a bittorrent client built in!!!! SWEET.
Feel free to -digg this.... i want to see how many negatives I can get. Perhaps set a record!
Long Live OPERA..!! - theman8631, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"not sane tech support person would use such CD unless they enjoy risking their job and/or possible prison." wow your silly, "a tech person" doesnt = an entire company. Its not like im going to be troubleshooting riaa computers or anything.
- Luuvitonen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2silverstrike: that doesn't mean it's more practical. I too find ERD Commander or some custom built PE better for the job.
- NerveBand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2LOL. Opera 9 didn't even come out (well not the final version at least).
On Topic: This is a pretty sweet cd. I thank the guy who compiled it, I'm gonna wait on dialup, don't care! - linuxrebel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There is an free (non distributable) version of Partition Magic. For example Mandriva used it with their installer. Limited abilities compared to the purchased version but it still does the basics.
- zc_au, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2digiwiz did a good job on the minipe cd OS ... its a good OS that comes in use when u need it :)
cool other cdes as well :) - sofa0ne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As for the Virus-Scan finding things...
I am running Avast, and I got the same warnings/alerts at about 89.7% downloaded.
I am not sure if this is because it is picking up the signature files from the various virus scan software included on the ISO or if a real virus is present. - Wolfman~K, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3this thing is definatly showing viruses.... :( I would avoid unless someone can show me they are not
- MxxCon, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9it's "Amazing" because it's the newest *WAREZ* release. :(
if you take a look at list of software on Hiren's CD alone, there's $5k+ worth of warez.
not sane tech support person would use such CD unless they enjoy risking their job and/or possible prison.
so we're turning digg into the next isonews? :/ - sorpigal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Want to post the ISO of yours and save me the trouble of making my own? I've been wanting a PE+Linux rescue disc for a while now but not badly enough to make it myself.
- StickyC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, but what makes this one so much cooler is David made his public, where you just kept yours in your CD binder to boast about it. Sharenexttimekthx ;)
- mikeda411, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1After burning the ISO I scanned it with Symantec Anti virus Corp Ed 9 and it found two viruses. One was PASSVIEW.EXE and MESSENGERPW.EXE. Does anyone know if this disk is safe to use or did my AV just incorrectly detect it as a virus. I really like the CD but am unsure of how save it is to use.
- ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Techiez Toolkit.
nuf said. - Wicky2k5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry. I have adblock so i cant see the advertisements
here's another site:
http://www.torrentbox.com/torrents-details.php?id=37835 - ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3What does Knoppix have to do with Windows tools?
Just because it's "bootable" doesnt mean they are similar.. sorry. - forger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hiren's contains some pretty illegal stuff that need a serial. But anyways, I digg it, becuase I paid for most of the stuff in there ;)
- djpolstee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I freakin love using Hirens and UBCD, now they've combined and have additional progs. Love it. rawk
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3A link to a blog entry or more detail in the comments is not a bad idea in a case like this. However, a direct link to the content is the best choice for the article submission. The best way to go is to post the direct link and then make your first comment be the one that describes what it is and why people want to read/download it.
- haxx4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He means: look at the bottom where it has Who Dugg This? There it says: all diggers (1178), but at the top it says 1175 diggs.
- Wicky2k5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Has anyone else noticed how this has 6 less diggs than diggers?
- haxx4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've tested this and have had no problems with viruses.
- gjantz, on 12/02/2008, -0/+0I have used David's 2.0 for 2-3 years. I can not find a newer version, is there a newer version or some thing like it?
