- richwalkup, on 10/12/2007, -6/+59I just love how everyone jumps on one product and swears it's the best in the world for everyone. I choose Windows because I want to be productive without spending a fortune on software again. I love Linux but it's just not productive unless you're a whiz at vi and sit in a dark corner all day banging out Perl scripts for your Apache server - never needing real collaborative mail client. As for the mac, it's a great concept but I don't buy one for the same reason I still drive my old trusty truck - I don't need a Benz to get me down the street because it's safer, I just put on my seat belt, drive safely, and I've yet to see the difference between my truck and that Benz (other than the fact that it's prettier and the chicks like it more).
I also use IE 7 over firefox. I tried firefox but it was a freakin resource hog and locked up at least twice a day and swept away some very valuable resources with it every time it decided to take a lunch. I remember several times watching FF eat my memory alive while I was debugging. It's a great browser for those who love it - but I hate it. We should all just learn to understand that there are reasons why each product exists and most of the time it's because of user preference - not functionality or security.
That being said - it doesn't suck to have a one shot installation for all the crap you need on a day-to-day basis. Decent post. - Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34Wait, so you don't need Vista because you have IE7 and WMP11? By all means, stick with XP then.
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25What? Ubuntu doesnt even come with flash. The fanboy siren just went off.
- xobecide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Yes and he hates us all.
- sneakerelph, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20So does your mom. And your sister.
- KennMac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Hey jerkoff, you're clicking an ad-word (video) that brings to you the AOL page. The actual URL to the video is right below that.
- subtle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Or what? You'll cry into your pillow?
- Ramtech, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9IE7 and Windows Media Player aren't the best software in the world... geez... there's way better..
As for the Vista thing.. theres a thing called vlite.. look for it on google... hopefully he gets into more because i wanna figure out a way to get rid of some services (DRM).. but still have the OS running on full specs :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is helpful if you have multiple PCs that you are constantly reformating and reinstalling windows on. I only have one PC so I just make it exactly the way I want and then make a image of it with Ghost.
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Ok, I don't go on mac articles and say "Mac Sucks" or "Linux Sucks" on articles about Linux, I find it ridiculous that you come onto an article solely about Windows and feel obligated to leave a comment like that...
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You don't HAVE to re-install XP, this is for setting up a bunch of computers the exact same way.. Which you do need to do with Linux
- drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Grow up.
- nick0909, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It doesn't come with the basic wireless drivers for Atheros cards, nor does it have WPA out of the box. You can add them with the package manager, but you have to know to do it, and you better have a different connection to the internet. Ubuntu might be fun, but it sure isn't all-inclusive.
- akkuma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4There is a version of "nLite" in the works by the same person.
- nick0909, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OK Stallman...
- PGvildys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dugg for all the software links.
- albator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nlite can be used to reduce windows xp, my version is onlu 150 meg.
- kronix2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can create an XP SP2 (with your XP SP1 disc and the SP2 file) and then burn a new disc, yes.
- SteelFrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, nLite will only function with a retail (read: standard) CD in your tray or a proper mounted image.
- sullyz0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I love it just for the list of freeware programs.
- rzrshrp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, that seems really useful. Anything that makes a fresh installation less painful gets a digg in my book...two if I could.
- hseldon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Boy...a video that requires an active-x player on an AOL website with a big picture of Rosie. Did the submitter know this is digg???
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very useful, that app list is amazing!
However, I dont use XP anymore, and nlite doesnt support Vista.
Unlike most people on using Vista, mines a legal copy. I work for a small business and I got a copy from them.
Just figure id get that out before I get comments about pirating and how I should switch to a Mac... - Slyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Vista won't need to do this, as I understand the functionality is built in due to the way Vista installs, it actually unpacks a large file rather than installing a clean version. So you can install and have a play around, install your favourite programs and games, pack it all up again and make a bootable vista disc.

- killinger777, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4But next time you install it there will be new versions of all that software. Good for IT though.
- drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone know if you can use this to convert an XP service pack 1 disk to a service pack 2 disk? I would like to use bootcamp but I only have a service pack 1 disk.
- deathmatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is way too awesome
I significantly reduced the install time, and saved the hassle of downloading my RAID drivers, SP2, and other time consuming windows updates
Furthermore, it also did the unattended install. Which is kick ass because no one should be forced to type out character in the CD key, and set regional settings. :
THANK YOU FOR THIS - synystar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I have to agree with not caring about IE7. I've used FF for two years but I had hoped that, since I can't convince the people I support to switch, that IE7 would at least compare. They get tabs at least. Woot. The interface sucks and I still can't do half of what I'm used to with Firefox. And it's sad that WMP still doesn't work out of the box in all situations. Why? It's frakkin Microsoft. VLC kills 'em. This whole thing is getting confusing. It's almost as if they want me to think "there's probably something easier and better than this" every time they release a new product.
- towle_42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it's called vLite
- Mandeep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can someone answer a question I have about the addons? I'm wondering where the programs install when you integrate a program. For example does WinRAR install to its default directory or does it install somewhere else. Also, is there a way to change where the programs install?
- DogGunn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is exactly the type of thing I need! :)
- Haroldx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just google them.
- wiremonkeymommy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1per the app list... there are some real gems in there, and I'm only on "C", been at it for 3 hours now, kick ass...
- HsoKinees, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1is it just me, or do these downloads not actually exist? every time i enter the (correct!!) 3-letter code, it just reloads the page with a popup ad, no download starts at all
- SteelFrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The way I understand it is that the Windows Vista installation will be anything but that. It'll actually be more of an image you'll be dumping back onto your drive so if you want to add, remove or modify anything, it'll be much less of a hassle.
- SteelFrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, nLite does allow slipstreaming of both Service Packs and various updates to the installer.
- Fiyerstorm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2lol @ this drama. Digg'd for RAGE.
- degustibus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like my disks set up a certain way, with 4 partitions and the OS on E: Or F: -- been doing it for years. My quick and dirty installation is to use use drivecopy and copy my whole harddrive to another drive, OS (Win2K), apps and all. I just fixed two of my computers today using drivecopy'd harddrives -- always some modifications necessary, but everthing gets installed in the right place.
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Really cool Idea, I plan to use it...I can't say how often I will, but it seems great..
- shaunhealey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for this guy ill have to try it sometime havent had chance yet.
Rock on Neowin! - tasadar24, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4But you can't run games on linux/mac(without those programs that don't always work...), and for mac's, you can't build it yourself.
- MaxPayne3476, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4...and as it turned out Nero isn't for Mac. Neither is most of my games. Nor most of my other native software.
- GlenQuagmire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I may need something like this...
- EricJD, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7Dugg because it's Neowin :D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Gonna give it a try, sounds fantastic to be true :P
- hypnotiq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Um, no.
With multiple PC's you need to use an app like sysprep + an imaging tool like Acronis or Ghost. Most organizations use a BASE IMAGE they create on their own, update periodically, etc. The base image is sysprep'd and mirrored to other machines, etc.
The point behind nLite is not so much about preinstalling particular apps like Firefox, etc., but removing components that come automatically installed with the base configuration behind standard windows images. This is good for creating a quick install in a virtual environment for testing, etc.
Last I checked, I am not aware that you can install an IMAGE to a virtual hard drive, therefore this tool is particular cool for quick installs of base configurations to a virtual machine. - YURiLOVER, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2But it's still windows.
-Bertrand from Apple - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Nice, I wish this works on Vista too though...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2This will save me a lot of time!!!!!!!!
