- MillionsLivio, on 01/08/2008, -6/+70I used to be a hardcore Firefox user, I also used to hate older verisons of Opera. A year back I gave the newest Opera build a chance and it was fantastic. It has more features than Firefox, while running quicker and lighter. Overall, I just kind of got sick of Firefox's bulkiness, that was the greatness of Firefox, it was slim, efficent, and open source. Opera has taken it's place as my browser of choice, for the power user I have to say it is hands down the best option. Everyone has their own preference, but overall it has grown vastly in the last few upgrades to get even better, while Firefox is just kind of standing still.
- skyshock1, on 01/08/2008, -5/+43Better back/forward page rendering, better CSS rendering, speedier script execution, more efficient memory usage, small installer download, faster table element rendering, passes ACID page rendering tests, built-in intuitive ad-blocking....
I could go on. - Makaveli604, on 01/08/2008, -17/+53"First, it’s got a very small footprint on your system, and runs faster than other browsers without eating your system memory"
And all with more features then Firefox.
Firefox has become the IE of the open source world. (Subpar, and overused)
He also barely mentioned speed dial, which quietly included several features (such as top 10 visited sites) that were just implemented in Firefox. - inactive, on 01/08/2008, -14/+44Doesn't it really boil down to personal preference? We all run monster machines anyway that can run any of the browsers even if they are memory hogs.
- sphrog, on 01/08/2008, -2/+21Opera's better than Firefox in terms of out-of-the-box features, although it still takes a fair bit of tweaking before browsing really feels "right".
I'm a diehard Maxthon user myself, but I'm sure I'm in a vanishingly small minority : - 0ceanic, on 01/08/2008, -3/+21another opera user here. the only thing i see potentially wrong with opera is its lack of plugins (opera widgets suck). but it may also be a strength.
many of the features ive been using for years are now only just becoming standard in firefox and ie.
ive removed clickable buttons from my browser, and do everything with gestures.
i love being able to zoom flash movies.
the automatic restore session
the paste and go option in the address bar (have you ever pasted something into the address to not go there?)
right click on non hyperlinked URLs and go to.
right click on any highlighted text and google it. (or read it loud, or define it)
bit torrent downloads.
its a polished browser with great rendering, alot of features by default, and the features are simple little things no other browser has yet to impliment. and on my winxp pro machine it has a 20meg footprint at startup. - dcmjzero, on 01/08/2008, -2/+19i pity anyone who has had to find the answer to that question.
/i once had to use ie in windows 95 japanese edition. - HigherLogic, on 01/08/2008, -1/+17The Z and X button for Back and Forward browsing is probably my favorite feature. I wish all browsers and even my OS had that!
- IndigoMoss, on 01/08/2008, -6/+22Opera is great, but I have to say I like Firefox more. I just love all of the extensions that Firefox has. If I didn't use extensions, I'd definitely be using Opera. In fact, I have Opera installed on my mom's computer, because she doesn't need to use extensions.
- chugger1992, on 01/08/2008, -1/+16so you've always been a fan of Opera?
- time4wrk, on 01/08/2008, -5/+20Opera is an awesome computer and mobile phone web browser. Also used on the Wii.
- bejayel, on 01/08/2008, -1/+14And yet, being a memory hog is one of the biggest gripes of people here.
I just cant wait for those promised web developer tools in the new Opera - skyshock1, on 01/08/2008, -4/+17I notice EXACTLY the opposite. FF takes forever to open on my mac while Opera just snaps right open. I do agree with you about the windows port though, it's definitely ported better for windows than for Linux or OSX.
- fogbog293, on 02/10/2009, -4/+17Opera is a fantastic browser. It's very responsive and clean feeling. Even though it's closed source I'd be happy to use it if only it supported plugins the way Firefox does. Not being able to use things like AdBlock, NoScript, CookieSafe, FoxyProxy, FireBug, etc. is a real deal breaker.
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 01/08/2008, -2/+14Does anyone WANT to run firefox on a virtual machine running windows 98 and 64mb ram?
- chugger1992, on 01/08/2008, -5/+17can you run Firefox ion a vitrual machine running Windows 98 and 64mb of RAM?
- HigherLogic, on 01/08/2008, -1/+13The great thing about Opera is that literally everything can be customized. Go to Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Tabs.
- agilesloth, on 01/08/2008, -0/+11Having a middle mouse button solves your first problem.
- potifar, on 01/08/2008, -3/+13How would it help you if Opera was open source? How much have you read or modified Firefox's source code lately?
- Ramble, on 01/08/2008, -1/+10Same here.
- 0ceanic, on 01/08/2008, -7/+16opera is free.
i was curious about what noscript was, so i googled it. opera seems to have that built in. if you ever get a text popup or something, opera has a little checkbox in that very same popup dialogue that says, stop executing scripts on this page. but dont know what else noscript does. - DrFriendly, on 01/08/2008, -2/+10Neither did I. I love how Opera has so many features, but they just don't get in your way if you don't use them.
- dcmjzero, on 01/08/2008, -1/+9not unless they hate themselves.
- OfficeSpacing, on 01/08/2008, -6/+14Been using Opera for years, before the whole Firefox craze. Each year the software gets better and better, proving that Opera really is The Worlds Best Web Browser.
- Speaking, on 01/08/2008, -0/+8Using both opera and firefox on a daily basis, I must say that opera's method saves much more time. If I want to go from tab to tab I just punch '2' and it takes me to next tab (then I close all "article" tabs when done). If you have a million tabs open (like I usally do) firefox's method just doesn't cut it.
- bejayel, on 01/08/2008, -1/+8If everything he mentions there comes out i will literally just drop everythign firefox and IE. Opera is my choice browser now, but i still have to turn to firefox for some things. That and i would appreciate a 64 bit version for linux as well.
- SupaFurry, on 01/23/2008, -2/+9Yeah, right click in an "empty" part of a webpage, select "Block Content..." and just click on the ads you dont want to see ever again.
- malbolgias, on 01/08/2008, -0/+7Thanks, did not know about that :)
- RightBleeding, on 01/08/2008, -1/+8I have just been Rabbit Rolled...
- subgeniusd, on 01/08/2008, -0/+7As if your first comment was "intelligent"....
- TKardinal, on 01/09/2008, -0/+6Opera is demonstrably faster than any other browser I've ever used. FF 1, 1.5, 2.0, or 3.0 beta. IE3, 4, 5, 5.5, 6, or 7.
Speed is critical, even in this age of monster PC's - renegadeafk, on 01/08/2008, -1/+7It's not NEARLY as big of a deal as you and others are making it, they are not suing or bringing any lawsuits.
- malbolgias, on 01/08/2008, -1/+7Yes it does!
- DrFriendly, on 01/08/2008, -3/+9You can block Javascript alltogether and enable it for specific websites. You also get to limit what JS does (E.G. change status bar). Same goes for JAVA, animated gifs, sound, and plug-ins (so yes, flash/shockwave etc.).
- gudnbluts, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6The one I miss most in Firefox is the space bar. In Opera, it acts as pagedown until you hit the bottom of the page, then it acts as a next page button. It makes using things like google and youtube easier, as you just keep hitting the space bar to view all the results.
- xDynaBlade, on 01/08/2008, -3/+9Opera is seriously amazing. The features are amazing and I love mouse gestures. I actually find myself still trying to do mouse gestures when I'm at school or someone else's house...
- salmonmoose, on 01/08/2008, -5/+11Or, more appropriately: Opera has so many features that are hard to find so you don't use them.
- JasonMaloney101, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6Most laptops have gesture configurations that will allow you to "middle-click" by tapping a corner of the trackpad.
- Makaveli604, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5Even better, click that thin line on the left of your screen. :P
- johnnysaucepn, on 01/09/2008, -1/+6Actually, it's not such a broad statement. Opera, as shipped by Opera, has more features than Firefox, as shipped by Mozilla. What other people have added to their copies of the browser isn't really the same as what the browser features in and of itself.
- FyberOptic, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5Thanks for pointing out that all of those browsers have flawed standards support compared to Opera.
- 0ceanic, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5then you must absolutely love mouse gestures! they kickass with a touchpad.
- mordea, on 01/08/2008, -9/+14I've extensively used both Opera and Firefox. For a time, I preferred Opera; it's very fast, works great, and has a lot of customization to it. But I eventually got too hooked on Firefox extensions which provided functionality I just couldn't get in Opera.
- drocha184, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5That's a joke, right?
- palta38, on 01/08/2008, -2/+7enabling or disabling scripts is a general and a per site configuration in opera, if you want to work with a white list just disable the scripts using the quick menu and use site preferences to enable scripts in your trusted domains
- bejayel, on 01/08/2008, -1/+6You were going good till you said Opera's lawsuit is garbage. I guess forcing microsoft to conform to standards and stop integrating their retarded browser (improving modularity at least a little) into their OS is a bad thing. Wow Man.
- omueller, on 01/08/2008, -3/+8I didn't know you could use (a variant of) Opera on a BlackBerry! Cool!
- DD32, on 01/09/2008, -0/+5What functionality do you use from the Google/Yahoo toolbars?
Search areas? (Inbuilt), Buttons(Add one!), Pagerank?(Pfft.. who cares, add a button which does the lookup if you must use it), popup blocker(inbuilt), fine in page (inbuilt, add the search field to a toolbar), autofill(Opera Wand in the preferences), Fraud Protection?(Enable it, Its in 9.5 at least, i'm pretty sure its in the current stable 9.25 build, but perhaps disabled by default) - FyberOptic, on 01/08/2008, -2/+7Because the Digg developers suck at their jobs.
- 0ceanic, on 01/08/2008, -1/+6built in add blocking?
i didnt know about that one. but i use a hosts file instead. -
