- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4not really gone crazy - just not configured properly
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Indeed this is a big stretch at bashing Windows...
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Who Cares?
- slippery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Your computer might be at risk" because it's running Windows :)
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Windows for signs, what a waste. I wonder who got paid off for that contract.
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2it's says "Your computer might be at risk" because they do not have the firewall on. they are most likely not hooked up to the net.
- zootm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm glad they're not using Linux or BSD, because if the people in charge of the service can't stop that message appearing, I can only guess at what havoc their lack of expertise would do to something more technical.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I recently got BSoD on some information terminals that were set up at a local government agency. They were (obviously) running MS Windows.
I'm surprised that more government agencies don't run Linux. Surely, for these sort of info terminals/kiosks, it would be better to implement some mod'ed Linux distro.
I mean you might still all cringe at GNU/Linux on desktop (I don't), but I don't think anyone really argues about which is more reliable or secure or stable.
Besides, everytime MS is proven to produce rubbish, linux comes one step closer to world domintation. - JimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why does the guy say that Task Manager reports a problem. Task Manager just says a PowerPoint is running. I could start PowerPoint and hit ctrl + alt + delete and get that. It doesn't mean there is a problem. This guy clearly knows nothing about Windows and is just looking to bash Windows.
- Mike89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's not a Plasma, this story is just plain rubbish, OH WOW, SP2 is warning them they dont have a firewall on, that's not "crazy messages".
The guy even states in the article he took the photos because he doesnt like Windows.
Don't digg this people - tom151515, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think all you people taking your anger out on windows are stupid.
If you actually knew anything you would see that the firewall message is an extra layer of security and that it was most probably human error (e.g. not configuring firewall correctly)
So this is actually nothing to do with windows problems (admitidly there are many windows flaws but this does not appear to be one of them) so give it up already. - optikburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Although Windows is crappy, I don't see any problem in the TV screen.. it's just one of those annoying Windows pop up messages... I'll digg this if it shows the blue screen of death.. (makes me wonder, do they use Windows on Air Traffic controllers? OMG!)
- jellomizer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Basic Linux Installation, Xwindows, Firefox set for full screen mode without any Windows managers. I really don't know why these people go so crazy with these systems. With just some simple web programming and basic Linux install you have an OS perfectly designed for that use. If you don't like Linux use Free, Open, Net BSD. It is not like having windows run in the background will make the custom app any easier to use. Sigh..
- comrademikhail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reported lame. This is not "gone nuts". This is just some Mac fanboy saying how much they hate windows, and showing how windows tries to tell you you don't have a firewall activated. Definately not front page material.
- cheeze_ballz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0big deal -- i hate windows just as much as the next guy, but this is just dumb.
no digg... - jimmyM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i see this all the time on various information-providing monitors in public places. so what. we digg users need to think more about what we diff to the front page if we want this thing to work. there has got to be something more interesting than some dude who posted pics of a screwy subway monitor to his blog. i understand where kevin rose if heading with this collective intelligence thing, but maybe he can come up with some sort of idiot filter.
- bossm4n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lame
- btutor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Absolutely lame. Just some guy working real time on the system. Digg is the biggest anti-Microsoft spam site around.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if you're gonna spend a couple million on new subway signs, you should at least make sure they're configured right, to display the information and not nag messages or errors... It doesn't matter if you use windows or not, for what the system costs, it should be setup properly..
- stray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thankfully, train signs in New York's Penn Station use some flavor of *nix.

See? - m.sandstorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"They're compers might be at risk"!? They're subways may be at risk!
- Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wowser... wait till someone hacks teh subway ahah
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, Powerpoint... the pinacle of modern-age technology.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0On the VERY local channel, the one that shows 6th grade girls basketball games and parades, the rest of the time they have a powerpoint presentation going. For a week it had a windows error popup and the desktop showing.
- Piotr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've seen this on a Paris train station once, only difference: it was a Linux shell.
- andrebsd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Image is probibly burned in by now, lol... looks like a plasma; so either way you'll see it forever :P
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1BSoD in 3... 2...
why not use linux? that's $200/sign of taxpayer $$$ down the drain - icabod540, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One time I was buying a movie ticket from the automated kiosk and immediately after I swiped my credit card a blue screen of death popped up. I thought it was funny. I got the ticket from the counter but I was a little pissed the charge went through before the blue screen.
- bobb243, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1lame
- exaviger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I cant believe people hate windows so much to digg this to the front page, it doesnt show anything.
All it shows is that this system is badly configured and sp2 is doing the SECURE thing by informing the user that there is a problem.
I am shocked, people that digg this are pathetic. - phej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's no crazy messages. No digg, reported as inaccurate.
- weiran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Erm... these are everywhere. My bus stops have plasmas that run windows (I saw one with a "Windows has recovered from a serious error" dialog).
- lowbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A security center message. Wow. Its the end of the world. This site is no slashdot killer if this is a "big story." Try harder.
- redhat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think that this story is great !
- Daiver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There are a couple of shots I took in Argentina's airport. They had a similar problem, only they were runnning something like Windows 98.
http://www.aeroforo.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-55.html - PacoDG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Inaccurate. There is no Error/Problems.
- samalex1701, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Our local cable network uses similar setups for two channels that show college and local information. They just fire-up powerpoint and start a slideshow. On numerous occasions while channel surfing I've flipped past either channel to find a similar Windows error message, a BSOD, or someone rebooting and working in the box while updating the presentation. TOO FUNNY!
- chiefcrazytalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I digg this - not just because I hate windows (I do) but it is a major WTF that a screen meant to show public information has what are essentially system-level messages pop up on it. Do you think someone waiting for a bus cares that the firewall has not been turned on on the CTA computers? They they just want to know of their bus is on time! Windows should be able to prevent crap like this from popping up all over the place.
- sofa0ne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What exaviger said is on point!!!
- AttroPheed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0+lame.
- flashmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is what you get when you can't 'Think Different"
- dhoefler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mod Points: -10 Lame
I wish we could undigg a story. - bitswapper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reminds me of the last time I was in Mexico, trying to escape Wilma. The display wasn't showing arrival and departure times - it was showing an 'application has performed an illegal operation' dialog box for windows. Very reassuring given that the most powerfull hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic was about to hit Cancun. Thanks, Bill - no really, thanks.
- synmoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah voted lame.
It's a simple slide show.... the fact that task manager was up makes me think that someone was working with the machine and forgot about it. It isn't like this is some mission critical box. - ripter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As someone said above, this shows how anyone can call themselves a sysadmin for windows. Whoever they have running their system doesn't know what they are doing, it takes about 3 clicks to turn that off. The public should *never* see such messages, its unprofessional.
- djdole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is news?
- Mysk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Windows, on my machine, has somehow forgotten about my anti-virus and firewall software and settings. Consequently I receive that annoying pop up when I was running the software that I needed to.
It's a nonsense message, but to have that message displayed for so long without fixing it _is_ pretty disconcerting. - vinny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Why would I pay $3000 for something I can build for $500? Oh yeah, I wouldn't."
retsoced,
This is a completely ridiculous comment which is completely without merit. Explain exactly how that $500 PC compares to a $3000 Mac system. You are nuts, and your comment has nothing to do with the story. - ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hehe... funny cause i hate Windows too... but not enough to get a digg
- exaviger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ChiefCrazyTalk
You can prevent windows from showing such messages, by default it is enabled becuase that is the sensible thing to do.
There is a difference between human error and bad design, this is simply a windows box that was not set up correctly (by a human) for its specific task. -
