- anasazi, on 10/12/2007, -6/+84if your copying your entire home PC to your iPod so you can play world of warcraft at work then maybe you should take a step back and look at yourself
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+54Just like I should be working instead of reading digg at work.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -3/+45because you should be working at work not playing WoW.
- z00k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30I was actually going to post this 4 Days ago, then noticed how terrible the software ***** up my machine...
You have to put in perspective of how "Fast" your going to be able to read off your Thumbdrive, etc. Yeah it will go "real fast".
Also one thing to keep in mind, This software is NOT FREE. That is why I didn't post it.
-Zook - YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7http://portableapps.com for the win!
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Unless you work for Blizzard of course
- z00k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I say That it messed up my Computer as when i had the actual program running I could not switch back to the host mode... There was no button for it and i had to hit "Alt-f4" ... that brought me back into Regular windows... great but there was a giant toolbar at the top to switch back... "*****" I said, so i tried to hit the x button to get out of it... No luck, it said i had to log out first, only problem was when i tried to log out of it it did nothing at all. And to top it off, when i tried to end the program (Through ctrl-alt-del and running taskman in the run dialog) it did NOT show my task manager AND when i tried to shutdown the computer the normal way it did not shutdown, same with standby, or log off. I was finally forced to do a Hard shutdown to get the computer off.
I immediately removed it from my USB and computer.
I marked this topic as "Ok this is lame"... Your decision to do the same is up to you, but I have put my two cents in.
-Zook - exobyte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Like above poster, how is this relevant to the iPod and not every portable hdd/flash drive?
- Feanor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah...I saw it and thought it looked sweet...but its just terrible. Slowed my computer way down and took forever to load.
- Vasto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6How does this affect the overall life of your iPod. I can only imagine how it constantly spinning to load games onto your computer could put some serious strain on your tiny iPod's hdd.
- sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I would think that the free vmware and vmware player would accomlish the same task.
- AltReality, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5OK, So I downloaded it and installed it. I also ran the install through INCTRL, which monitors changes an install process makes to your system. It DOUBLED MY REGISTRY!. 41000 registry entries were created with this installation. I would be happy to email the log to anyone that wanted to research it further.
This is different from a virtual machine, in that it uses the filesystem of the device it is installed on. a VM creates it's own virtual file system, that is only accessible when the VM is powered on. Secondly, a standard Windows XP Vitrual Machine is going to be more than 1GB installed (Mine is over 2GB after SP2 and windows update was run). Mojopac is only 40MB before you install your software like WoW.
DSL uses QEMU, which is a free emulation application, (that kicks ass) and it doesn't require an installation to run. So you don't have to install a player application on the host PC to use QEMU.
If I could figure out how mojopac uses the host's filesystem, and installs in only 40MB, then I'm sure it could be replicated with QEMU.
Anyone interested in working on it?
-AltReality - isthisnametaken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+530 day trial then $29.99 for a "license". Also doesnt say if this is a one time fee or if its monthly/yearly etc. I assume a "license" is lifetime, but that isnt always the case.
Has anyone tried it? - misteral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3From TFA: Compared to a similar free product like Damn Small Linux (which can also run from a flash drive)
How is DSL similar to this? DSL is a virtualized linux you can carry around?? DSL is linux, it's not meant for synchronizing between your windows machine and anything. - waynechng, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Get MojoPac and pay 30 bucks cause letting the iPod mount as a external hard drive for free just isn't your thing.
*sarcasm* - AltReality, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Mojopac is unlike anything else out there. Sure it may have some bugs (I didn't encounter any personally) but it is definately interesting. It is sort of like a VM, but not entirely.
It uses the filesystem of the flash drive, and installs in only 40MB. It also doesn't Show me another app that does that.
-AltReality - orgazmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This would appeal only to those that don't have admin rights on their work computers
But you need admin rights on the host PC to have this thing working, so it's pretty much pointless, or at least, not worth 30$ - Jetfire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"How do kill something that has no life?"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21. create software that does 1% more than what most thumbstick virtualization sw does, make sure it's insecure.
2. mention WOW
3. PROFIT! - phlogiston99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2mod me down.
- Feanor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Necho - What it basically does is open up a window that displays what almost looks like a VMWare session, using the settings it backed up from the original computer.
It slowed down the computer I loaded it up on. - Botrax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would not recommend the "Optimize for fast performance" as suggested. Nice way to lose data of the USB drive is removed during or before a delayed write.
- thespiff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@grimreaperev
The website has a disclaimer at the end that says you must be logged on as an admin on the machine to even run MojoPac. This makes it pretty much useless for Joe Student or Sue IT who is working in a locked-down environment but wants to play games. - tackle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4this seems appropriate here :)
http://www.apple.com/support/windowsvirus/ - phlogiston99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, actually it runs application _from_ the usb drive, right in the memory of the "host".
If the usb device does not contain OS files, then nothing is virtualized.
This looks like a $30 application launcher and a fancy virtual "desktop"
You can also peek at their web site, hit the support forum to get a taste of the kind of "problems" people have and the lack of response from the developers. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3OMFG it allows me to listen to my music library on my iPod?! WTF! BUY NOW!
- Lobster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1On my thumdrive I use the FOSS portable apps
that has been mentioned
http://portableapps.com - free, fast, secure, excellent
Firefox, Thuderbird, Fillezilla etc
and Puppy Linux
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/
Damn Small Linux (includes apps)
or Austrumi Linux would also be good. - alrahman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Just don't catch a virus
- isthisnametaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so that's what ??? means. Always wondered that.
- manitoba98xp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To everyone saying that there are many free apps that do this: where? I have not seen any. (I'm also not sure: does Mojopac create a virtual machine or run the apps on the local machine?) I am impressed by the idea of taking any application with me anywhere (although running as a limited user is a must, and it would be a Windows solution: it's a Windows world, unfortunately).
- phlogiston99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or QEMU, free as well. Opensource even.
- vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm pretty sure I can do all of that now (except maybe play games) for free and without any sort of hardware. VNC or remote desktop and portableFF(can be emailed) or linux livecd anyone?
- Netgh0st, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reminds me of the u3 but unlike u3 where u can save only u3 products u can save the entire Windows environment with this baby.
- FZero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I really just wanted a solution to boot WinXP from an USB drive. I play live (and using Live - www.ableton.com - tee-hee) with a laptop and would like to have an alternative in case of a HDD crash. I guess I'm not the only one. Linux does this beuatifully, but unfortunately it doesn't run Live. Yet.
- conzc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone know if mojo runs on Windows VIsta? Or it only works on WinXP?
- bulawil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0are there any alternatives to mojopac that are worth the attempt! I'm currently on the trial version of mojopac and so far no problems.
any recommendations
thx
bulawil - Soccrmastr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1how do you get this to work on a PSP? I cant find out on that tutorial or on gogole or the mojopack website.... :/
- Necho, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Can you elaborate on how it messed up your PC? I never used nor heard of this particular software before so I'm just interested.
@Feanor: it slowed down the original computer? How? - Hieroglyphics, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I think people are taking iPods too far, whats next?opening your car door and shooting lasers with an ipod or psp. Thumb drives i can see doing these.
- grimreaperev, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I totally agree with you but it also says it doesn't leave a trace. We have laptops at the school I go to (in physics class atm) and our computers are extremley locked down and trace everything. Non-tracable is making me want to try it out :(, n e one know how to make an ipod as an external hard drive non traceable?
- ryan4477, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2sorry, i dont pay for software.
- ryandury, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0heh,
Yeah, and im pretty sure there are a bunch of other programs like this.. I can't remember the program names, but there are plenty out there for free. - shibz, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6Since when did you need $xx software to play WoW from removable media? In my senior year of high school I played WoW all the time on school comps (and still managed >95% grades in all my comp classes); all I had to do was copy/paste my WoW folder. Did they change the game to require reg entries now? I quit last summer before the patch... I am soooo glad that I did too.
- Backlash, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2marked as.... GAY!
- APretender, on 10/12/2007, -43/+3why?
