- ligyron, on 10/12/2008, -3/+92The Canadian 2008 debate was far more interesting than America's. They actually sit around a round table and argue directly with each other. It was great

- AkshayGenius, on 10/11/2008, -7/+63Great, first strong economy, and now this. Another reason to move to Canada.
- michaelyurechko, on 10/12/2008, -3/+57*****' eh.
- Pimptastic, on 10/12/2008, -0/+43And Hockey, and Beer, and moose, and polar bears and more beer.
- forthex, on 10/12/2008, -2/+37That's a fine mustache, Jack.
- inactive, on 10/12/2008, -4/+31They've never been in power before. Are you just making ***** up now to push your views?
- TPorter72, on 10/12/2008, -2/+27I love that Layton joked about the sweater.
- JasonAdams13, on 10/12/2008, -2/+26actually canadian conservatives are more like american democrats. we don't have a party as conservative as the republicans
- BrokenAnimator, on 10/12/2008, -1/+25It's a great thing for Jack Layton to say and it sounds nice, but Canada is still one of the worst modern countries for technology. We pay the highest prices for Cell phone and Internet services and receive the least amount of value compared to other technically modern countries. The big corporations really rule with an iron fist here and have a monopoly at the cost of the consumer.
Our main ISP's are capping all Internet download and upload at 60 GB's, and really killing net neutrality. Even if Jack does get a bill going that bans throttling, these ISP's will just cap us all so we can't download anything.
It's a shame. - forthex, on 10/12/2008, -2/+26You know Socialism (through Tommy Douglas) basically saved Saskatchewan (a western Canadian province, most famous for farming and wheat production) from poverty in the 1950's and introduced provincial/national healthcare to Canada, AND fought for a "Bill of Rights" (which was adopted by the UN a year and a half later), right?
- inactive, on 10/12/2008, -1/+24You can actually get drunk on Canadian beer. It's not just watered down camel piss like in the US.
- stephenpjc, on 10/11/2008, -5/+27I'd like to see American presidential candidates talking about this topic like this.
- ShadowofAres, on 10/12/2008, -13/+35If Bittorrents are fundemental to our democracy, then something's not quite right...
- digidevil, on 10/12/2008, -3/+25Say what you will about Layton, he earned my undying affection the moment he said, with open contempt, right to Harpers big fat smug face in the leader's debate, in reference to the Conservative platform which still hadn't been released: "Where is it? Under your sweater?"
- obinine, on 10/12/2008, -1/+22Yes and the Canadian Green Party were the first to come out for net neutrality AND the adoption and support of open source software by government.
http://www.linux.com/feature/120280 - michaelyurechko, on 10/12/2008, -10/+31It is currently the best choice when you look at the other candidates. Stephen Harper has done nothing for our country in the last 2 years and has some crazy conservative values, and Stephane Dion is... well.. a joke.
Canada is, and always will be, a socialist country to some extent. If you want a conservative country move to the states. - forthex, on 10/12/2008, -0/+19It's more likely than you think.
- adiyo011, on 10/12/2008, -1/+20There was "Young Canada vote day" and students came around each class to talk about each party's platform. In this mock vote, I voted for NDP. However, this was before I heard of this and I'm proud I voted in that.
I'm only 15 but you're never too young to make a difference since politicians do take those polls in effect which is why we're seeing such a big green focus here in Canada's next election.
Don't forget people, voting is one of your greatest rights. No matter who you dislike, vote. - bongfarmer, on 10/12/2008, -2/+21
I'm not sure who I'm going to vote for yet, but I've been really turned off by the conservatives negative ads, we don't need to be imitating that part of American culture - AROZ, on 10/12/2008, -2/+21What's the backlash against Dion? He was important in fighting separatism in Quebec. Just because the Conservative ads say he's not a leader without any further justification, doesn't make it true.
- artfuldodga, on 10/12/2008, -0/+17you're right, and this fact has nothing to do with Harper, as he likes to claim.
- inactive, on 10/12/2008, -3/+20Unfortunately the conservatives want you to vote NDP if you don't want to vote conservative. It's even been said tons of times by their campaign strategists. The reason is obvious, it'll take votes away from the liberals, prevent them from getting a minority or4 a majority, and basically let the conservatives win by default.
- angryfirelord, on 10/12/2008, -1/+18It's a part of it. I think what the NDP is referring to is that freedom of information is an important right, no matter what shape or form it's delivered to. Democracy partly relies on the "knowledge is power" rule, so if people are hidden from certain types of content, what else are they being blocked from?
- ligyron, on 10/12/2008, -2/+19I'm voting Liberal for that very reason. I'd rather NDP be in power, but I definitely don't want Conservative in power again
- mikenoseworthy, on 10/12/2008, -0/+16I'm just happy our elections don't take as long as the American's.....
- feenstrovski, on 10/12/2008, -3/+19Canada's economy is not strong, the banks are just more secure than most other countries
- christof53, on 10/12/2008, -4/+20I will be voting NDP.
- wonkavsn, on 10/12/2008, -1/+14I'm really glad that they let the Greens in this time.
- akula89, on 10/12/2008, -3/+16http://www.anyonebutharper.ca/
here you can put your postal code in and find out what candidate you should vote for if your goal is to oust Harper! - AROZ, on 10/12/2008, -0/+13^Indeed, that was more the work of the Chretien government which didn't want to deregulate. I recall in the leader's debates that Harper's central point was that the economy wasn't too bad because we're not having a mortgage meltdown and that people who lost jobs in manufacturing can move across the country to find jobs. In reality, Canada's economy is slowing down now, just like nearly every economy right now. But oil is still being produced.
- christof53, on 10/12/2008, -2/+15They've never been in power federally. If you're talking about when they were provincially for Ontario, then just look at who their leader was at the time. Bob Rae. Now he is a liberal hmm.
- a3r0, on 10/12/2008, -0/+12Politicians would be very happy if everyone were as easy to convince as your mom
- qbqb, on 10/12/2008, -3/+15My MP is Jim Prentice, Minister of Industry. He's sidestepped and dodged Net Neutrality questions. Needless to say, I'm voting Green.
- inactive, on 10/12/2008, -0/+12@EvilBaby
I am only repeating what CONSERVATIVE strategists have said, not spreading fear mongering. The conservatives know a fragmented left will be to their advantage. It's unfortunate right now, but no matter how you swing it, a vote for the NDP is a vote for the conservatives, because it removes votes from the conservative's biggest contender, the liberals. I don't think they'll get a majority, but they'll keep their minority, and we'll be back to where we started. On the other hand, this may eventually lead to the NDP taking over or equaling the liberals in future elections, but then the left will be even more fragmented. - earthforce1, on 10/12/2008, -3/+14The Green party is also opposed to C-61 and support using Free & Open Source Software (i.e. Linux/OpenOffice) wherever possible in gov't.
They are also for income splitting, meaning single breadwinner families stand to gain many thousands of dollars in tax benefits. - mattcoady, on 10/12/2008, -0/+11But for god sakes, don't get Molson Canadian. Its like Canada's Budwiser.
- frsrblch, on 10/12/2008, -0/+11Yeah, Conservatives are way closer to Democrats on the left-right scale. That comparison isn't perfect though... you won't hear Democrats talking about public health care though, or see Obama wearing any of those fantastic sweaters that Harper wears.
- noPCtoday, on 10/12/2008, -3/+14looks like Dr.phil + ron paul...
- edge777, on 10/12/2008, -1/+12Haha, that's the first time anyone ever thought the Canadian debate was interesting. Usually, the debate is so scripted and controlled that it's totally dull. It was kinda interesting this time... except most of the candidates pretty much just bullied Harper and had nothing of real substance to say.
- Metahero, on 10/12/2008, -2/+13It's nice and everything, but when I think about all the issues that are important to me as a Canadian voter, this has to register pretty low. There are way more important things than this, and while I admire Jack and the NDP, they won't be getting my vote.
I noticed a lot of Americans saying "Why can't the US be like this." I just want to point out that the NDP has never won a federal election in Canada and has never even been the official opposition. It's still good to have this left-wing voice though; the NDP is the reason that Canada has socialized healthcare. Maybe the US would be a better place if there was a socialist presence in Congress or the Senate, even if it was in an extreme minority. - sKiLLa182, on 10/12/2008, -0/+11Now can you get my girlfriend to try anal?
- akula89, on 10/12/2008, -0/+10http://www.anyonebutharper.ca/
here you can put your postal code in and find out what candidate you should vote for if your goal is to oust Harper! - Alex4050, on 10/12/2008, -2/+12I'll most likely vote NDP
I'm strongly against Stephen Harper and George Bush having little tea parties all the time. - satori3000, on 10/12/2008, -2/+12the NDP are not like the democrats, NDP are far more left that the Dems, the Canadian Liberal party is more in line politically with the Dems. Love that they have this platform though.
- brettalton, on 10/12/2008, -1/+11It's the only reason I vote for him...
- JoeMittler, on 10/12/2008, -3/+13Was planning on voting NDP and am glad I am!
- MarrowMan, on 10/12/2008, -4/+13Jack has my vote, and not just because of thses comments, but because he cares about Canadians, and not just his retirement fund, like the Dip-***** Liberals, and ***** Douche-Bag Conservatives.
