- rocke86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32Here is a short beginners guide to Bryce 5 from the University of Arizona. It does a good job describing the basics of the program.
http://www.oscr.arizona.edu/downloads/tutorials/archive/Bryce5_User.pdf - KJay, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34Define *free*. The full Adobe Creative Suite has always been *free* on *some* websites.
- FlashBIOS, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35The Mac OS X version appears to be free too.
http://www.download.com/Bryce/3000-2187_4-10574904.html?tag=pub - jordan314, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Blender's a lot more powerful but Bryce is good for generating landscapes particularly well, and is a bit more user friendly.
However, I do have to give a shout out to Terragen (http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/ ), which does a similar thing for free, and may be even better. - TheSaladMan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29*Shrugs* Who needs Bryce when you can always get Blender for free?
Considering Blender's a lot more powerfull as well :) - chad78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Or better yet - use a crap email account.
- IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Wait for first spam, create rule for sender to go to Deleted Items. Done.
- FlashBIOS, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23Correction, the version is for Classic.
- insomniac8400, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I think it's always been free on certain web sites.
- terevos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I just downloaded it. It runs on Mac OS X natively. FYI.
- TomMcBaum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You have to register at the Daz3d site after downloading before it will run. Old Corel v5 serial numbers don't work, BTW. Presumably, you'll get spammed with upgrade offers when v6 comes out.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Why mod this down? Eventhough this version is not for OSX, its still a valid download for Mac OS Classic, isn't it?
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Awesome. I'm looking forward to a glut of rendered 3D fantasy mountain scenes on websites very soon...
- UltraNurd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10It's the Carbon version that came out a few years ago... so it runs under both Classic and OS X.
- tidalwav1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Possibly a more direct download link?

From the download page:
"NOTE: Bryce 5.0 does not run under Mac OS X Tiger (Mac OS 10.4 and above)." - Rayza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7They're still using this program to make landscapes in crappy, low budget films..

From "Metalheads": http://www.somethingawful.com/index.php?a=3969 - DannyEngesser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Here is an uncommon use for Bryce 3D -- indoor scenes... I used version 4.0 to make these "virtual set" backdrops for a TV retrospective we did about the BBC Comedy Fawlty Towers, called Fawlty Towers Revisited. I only had like a week to make these. Enjoy! http://www.iptv.org/danny/fawltytowers/
- clarkmoody, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Don't forget the Perfect Cystal Sphere hovering over an endless ocean.
- WorldGroove, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Or even better yet, get out Ollydbg and apply these changes...

- NerveBand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Thank you for that tutorial. That was really helpful ^_^
- angusm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4As a long-term customer of Daz3D, I've actually found that they're a very "straight-up" company. I've never had a problem with them sending me messages I didn't want or known them to share my address with others. I'd guess that if you uncheck the relevant checkboxes under "Daz subscriptions" on your account page, you shouldn't have a problem.
I think the purpose of this promotion is not to get hold of people's addresses so that they can spam them, but to start you on the slippery slope of addiction that will lead to you buying more products from them. I think they make most of their money from selling 3D content - digital models to use with Bryce and other applications - so the Bryce giveaway is probably intended just to try to expand their market. It's the old pusher's rule: "the first fix is always free".
Disclaimers: your mileage may vary, I don't speak for Daz and have no idea what fiendish plans they may be cooking up. They may suddenly turn evil and spam the planet until the Internet catches fire. But in the past they've always been good people to deal with. - danielrh9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Bryce is actually a pretty decent program for playing around with things, but not for the serious designer by any means. It's Pixar quality, but in the quality of a 1993-era Pixar. Still cool though.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Cool now I can play around something else when I am bored at work.
- jharper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It is an OS X app and will run on OS X (I've already started it on an OS X machine without Classic installed). It's compatible with OS 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, but Tiger users may have some trouble.
- darthsnoopy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4In addition to what praxis stated, there is a free tutorial that I did a while back for those wanting to use DAZ studio that hand't used poser or weren't familiar with 3D interfaces.
Direct link:
http://www.downstairstheater.com/episodes/Project1/
That tutorial goes through all the steps needed to bring in models, add accessories, lighting, and basic rendering/output. If you're curious as to what DAZ studio is, or how easy thier softwae is to use, go check out the video. If it seems amateruish, well,..it was done as a hobby, not for cash.
I'm glad to see they're offering Bryce, as the combination of Bryce (which does landscapes) and DAZ Studio (which does figures/people/animals) is a powerful one. Some basic composition techniques and you could create some very creative renderings. - Kajico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it also has a much steeper learning curve.
- psycloned, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3great, then ignore this news post and STHU... it is after reading threads like these, filled with elite pre-teens downloading the latest graphics warez that 'know' bryce 'sucks' is that I get so dismayed about the public in this place. Please try to add something with the slightest intellectual value to the topic, or don't say anything. Really, in this case it will make you look smarter.
Bryce is not the Rolls Royce of 3d animation, we get it... WE KNOW... hmmk... that's why they are giving it away for free... do you see how that works?
Thank you DAZ, the tool will actually be appreciated in this computer... i'm not 3l337 you see... - devoinregress, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Blender 3D is free and much more advanced.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Why does it "sux"?
- praxis22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Daz do roll thier own software, they wrote Daz Studio, a (free) modern replacement for Poser, utilising such things as Open GL previews, and 3D hardware rendering, etc. Unlike Poser, well poser 5 , anyway, not tried poser 6. Daz also give away the base models of the Mike 3.0 and Victoria 3.0 (as well as Aiko 3.0) Human, (anime) figures. So if you feel like experimenting all they ask is that you sign up. You get one mail per week, usually about Poser, this week about Bryce. They're a good company, I've been using thier stuff for years. They also do free models every week. All in all a good deal, recommended!
- sembetu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Intel
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm a Bryce and Terragen registered user, and to be honest, Vue 5 blows the socks off of both right now.
http://www.e-onsoftware.com/
Check out the movie for Vue 6, I can't wait to get my hands on it. I still use Terragen sometimes, (they're really slow releasing Terragen 2, which will support vegitation and import of models), but I NEVEr use Bryce anymore, since Vue does everything Bryce does better, cheaper and with a higher quality renderer.. - chad78, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4As the ninja would say...
Great comment, felchdonkey. Ninjas love beutifully rendered fantasy mountian scenes - especially ones covered in dead bodies and blood. And I look forward to killing you very soon... - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3WTF is this?
- grunherz5x5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dammit. Now I know why I deleted my old copy of it from my hard drive a while ago.
Yeah, I seem to remember the interface is broken in Tiger.
Bryce was a dream about 6-7 years ago for making really cool landscapes and dropping in models from sci-fi sites and making your own creations with them. Back then I spent hours making things with it.
It's pretty dated now, but still a lot of fun. - mb3581, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4There's a fine line between FREE and LEGALLY FREE, or you could just use the political approach of plausible deniability.
- Psylo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Bryce always had a very intuitive interface. For home user it's really a good proprietary software.
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Digg for the Terragen & Blender references.
- UltraNurd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I haven't used Bryce since Expose came out with Panther... and the control panels are drawn as separate windows that you can explode with Application Windows!
- whiteyMcBrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bryce is a pretty lame program. I understand that people with no 3D experience might enjoy it for a day or two, but I don't know if anyone should be making any serious attempts at using it for anything productive. It's the equivalent of a neon glitter pen to the good sketching pencil of other 3D apps (Maya is free for home use). It doesn't do a very good job of hiding the fact that you used Bryce to make the scene. Everything looks kinda similar. Kinda like the gradients that Corel used to use in all their stuff.
- angusm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They offer a $19.95 upgrade path to Bryce 5.5, which does run under Tiger (at least on my PowerBook G4). Bryce 5.5 also allows easy integration with their free Daz Studio, which is a kind of low-end replacement for Poser.
Be aware that if you have an Intel Mac, Bryce 5.5 will run under Rosetta emulation. I haven't seen any figures to suggest how fast it runs, but I'd expect it to take a speed hit. According to one of the guys who runs Daz, a Universal Binary (i.e. PowerPC and Intel native) version of Bryce is planned for Bryce 6.1. - koick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, very cool!, dug.
- slapout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Props to Daz for naming the file decently. Most people would call it setup.exe or B55In.exe or something. They actually named it Bryce5FreeVersionPC.zip
- koick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@relentless1914:
Gulp! At $580 Vue 5 better be damn good! - sembetu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We'll see... I will let you know.
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey now, don't be hating on us people with numbers in our names. I'm no spam bot.
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Link for Blender (for those who don't know of it already)
http://www.blender3d.com/
They have versions for Windows, Mac OS X 10.3+ (PPC and Intel), Linux (PPC and Intel), Solaris, FreeBSD, and Irix.
