- lazydrumhead, on 10/12/2007, -7/+27he wanted to be dugg up, but he asked to be dugg down.
lets leave him at +1. - sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19It's cool, but Microsoft is shooting this product in the foot by making it IE only. I tend to avoid sites that force me to use one browser over another, and this will be one of them.
- myfanwy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21IE only? get bent, microsoft.
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10The detail is very good and everything is fully textured, even electrical substations are in 3-D. And they're selling ad space on 3D billboards. Plus Xbox360 controller support is thrown in.
Now all it needs is some Chicago love and a Firefox plugin. Live Local seems to like screwing over Chicago despite it being the third largest city in the US. - alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6here's a video from on10.net about it:
http://on10.net/Blogs/laura/virtual-earth-3d-the-next-dimension-in-search-well-at-least-the-third-dimension-/ - Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It was Microsoft, and you controlled the car/person using the arrow keys. Anyone have a link?
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Yeah it totally sucks if you're using Firefox. I'll bet they have a Firefox plugin in the works though, they've kept it compatible up until now.
- ashukg, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14This looks cool! way better than google earth/maps or anything similar I have seen. Now if only it had more coverage and more accurate mapping data... :)
- neave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The future is here! 3D in your browser. Just look how much better the buildings look
http://virtualearth.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!2BBC66E99FDCDB98!7573.entry - DucksofAnaheim, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Makes Google Earth look crappy...plus it`s been getting RAVE reviews !
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7No Mac version. :(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Is it me or is microsoft just making eye candy-ware that contains their users to their operating systems while providing no additional functionality on equal footing with their competitors. Oh ya that's their business model.
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Excuse the scatological comment here, but maybe someone can enlighten me. I recall someone (not sure if it was MS or Google) had this online mapping application, for want of a better term, and it was a split screen thing, the top was a map of san francisco, and the bottom was a street level view looking forward, not down...maybe it's my imagination, but it was made to look as if you were driving through the streets in a car, or walking?
- DucksofAnaheim, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7The MSFT guy gave the demo using a 360 controller...how cool is that ?
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Found it...wwwooooo http://preview.local.live.com/ That wasn't the address at the time, it was called Street Side back then.
- ashukg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7This is way cool! Much better than google earth or anything similar I have seen. Now only if it had more coverage and better direction data... try searching for something like 5th ave and S jackson st. seattle in google and live and you'd know what I mean. Google gets it!
- ZapWizard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+63D flying Billboards are not a good thing.
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7IETab runs Virtual World 3D without a hiccup, so I'm good.
- kirupa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That was Microsoft also. I forget what the site is called, but you had San Francisco and Seattle as two of the areas you could drive (drag or keyboard your car on a map) through and get an actual passenger/driver-side view of the area.
EDIT: What Cymro posted above! - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11Better than Google Earth? It looks to be about the SAME as Google Earth, except without all of Google Earth's extra features.
Seriously, it was pretty cool that it was 'in-browser,' but to do that required two installs and 6mb of downloading. As of right now, I have to give big kudos to Microsoft, though, for some web innovation. However, their product is lacking; if Google could transfer most of Google Earth's features online, it'd blow it away. But one has to ask oneself, "Why is it necessary to have a 3d mapping ability online, where it will be inherently slower and won't perform as well?" - alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Ya, great job, build the an internet service that only runs in internet explorer. I'm starting to wonder what drugs they're all taking in Redmond."
are you serious? It's one non-essential feature that works on 80% of people's primary browsers. - sarwatw, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12Great Job guys!
- burstgoof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3a) 'Flying' billboards = future home of virtual advertising. Very VERY cool idea. i.e. I'm looking at Vegas and I search for 'pizza' and virtual billboards popups pointing to the pizza places, the actual buildings rendered in 3D...
b) If you've done any reading about this, you'd know that although admittedly it is a control running in a browser and therefore not really browser native... the magic of the app is how the 3D models are constructed. MS can model a city in 3D for a fraction of the cost and time that it takes Google to populate their 3D modelling of a city. That gives MS enough of a competitive advantage to catch up and surpass Google... and then reference back to part a above re: the virtual advertising, and it really is genius. I suspect the Photosynth project has quite a bit to do with the methods for creating the 3D models and the efficiencies that MS has created. - tileeater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3IE only active x plugin. deal breaker.
- rieuwa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3works stunning for me....
- WoahPuppets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4IE only? I just did a bunch of stuff in Firefox 2...
- ki85squared, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is very impressive in comparison to Google Earth in that oddly shaped buildings are represented more precicely, though not entirely accurately. Here's the eiffel tower in Vegas.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=36.112479~-115.171404&style=h&lvl=19&tilt=-25.4960319131006&dir=34.66678373227&alt=805.622886001132&scene=952934
It shows up in its correct shape rather than a block. The only issue I've seen are structures that, from top to bottom, start narrow, then go wide, then get narrow again. (See the hot air baloon in front of the eiffel tower.)
I'm truly excited about what this new 3D view will turn out! =) - joe90210, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2why did MS go at this from scratch to redo Google Earth? Google innovated the 3d mapping space by buying out keyhole and renaming it to Google Earth, MS need to do the same
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really don't think it was amazon who created it. this was about two years ago, maybe longer.
- PhilPrice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I find it impressive, that my home town in Malvern, England has the Hills next to the town height mapped correctly, its great! Sigh, reminds me of home :(

- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not like either developed their 3-D mapping product, they both acquired it from other companies. At least MS did more than just rebrand the thing.
- yukikaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MS got the technology by purchasing this company last year.
http://geotango.com/ - DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's another web site: http://www.my3dvistas.com/ that uses VE and adds some additional features.
- accidental, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well the video must have been using imagery that was all pre-loaded or on the guys hard drive on his uber machine. In no way does it look like that when i tried it with my system. Actually, looked quite terrible.
- DigitalPioneer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is nothing but another of M$'s feeble attempts at rescuing their dying IE, IMHO. If it worked in GOOD browsers, it might be half-way interesting. Yet, it does not, and therefore I buried. It's nothing but a cross between a Google Earth clone and an IE ad.
- bonzooznob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No Digg.
Reasons:
1.) Lousy coverage in Canada (read: none)
2.) Requires MSIE (according to the notes on the page)
3.) Slow as molases... even without the 3D...
Give me my Google Maps, or Ask Maps any day. - mizraabianz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looks great and iam using FF 1.5 and it seems to be towkring fine.. so what all this tlak about not suporting FF?
- kylerk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Anybody click on the Eragon billboard floating in LA. It actually links through to the movie website.
looks like lots of ads are going to be coming soon. - alx5962, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MS didn't allow non english-speaking customers to install this, so I used Orca to edit the .msi installer and I have virtual earth on my computer :)
- d3ik, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6I went through the steps to download it, install it and then finally browse the world in '3D'. I looked at LA... no 3D. Then I looked at New York City... no 3D. Then Internet Explorer crashed. Awesome... but I think I'll stick with Google Earth.
I really don't get the point of a "Browser based" application that is really a thick client app sitting in the background. If you're going to make a web based application, make it. If you're going to make a thick client, make it. Don't give me some in between IE-only garbage. - p0lye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anyone want to now how M$ is funding this new toy???
built in ads!! thats right, bilboards that link to actual websites!!
check it out - http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.qp05kx8qtfyv_Untitled%20item___
view it in 3D...you might have to swivel it around a little (its kinda high in the "air"), but its there. - t0ny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Lol, people thing Ms is so good. I like google. Google is only a few years old here. Ms? about 15-20 years old. I'll take google any day. Plus it works on linux.
- DucksofAnaheim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes...that is the idea , to make ad revenue in new and interesting ways. They beat Google to the punch in this case. Ever seen product placement on TV or in video games ? You get the idea.
- insidein, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Was It Amazon's Mapping Service
- synt4x, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0It's like Windows 95 all over again!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Ya, great job, build the an internet service that only runs in internet explorer. I'm starting to wonder what drugs they're all taking in Redmond.
- JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -11/+8Not great. This is just a normal program that Microsoft set up an IE plugin for to allow it to run in the browser. The quality is lame, and it displaying Toronto as six buildings is just annoying. (I don't care if it's not there, but if you put it there, do a good job.) I'd take Google Earth any day.
