- zosobaggins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"M$N Me$$enger $uck$, a$ doe$ mo$t of Micro$oft'$ $oftware." Am I the only one hearing that? Messenger is fine. It's simple, it's everywhere, and it's easy to use. Doesn't have spyware or anything, and most people have it. So what's wrong with it?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ive been using GAIM for about a year...its much better than AIM, with no ads or spyware
- crossman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they are missing Adium
i also don't really see the point of this website. sure the original aol produced client sucks, but they still run the aim networks. if they don't get some money how are they supposed to support the network that allows you to chat - mixx941, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice idea. I say boycott AIM as a client and a network. There are much better chat networks out there.
- Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The site doesn't have __that__ much information, but for people who have never tried anything else, I suppose it's helpful.
I would probably use Miranda all the time if it allowed multiple simultaneous account connections on the same service. So I use Trillian most of the time. - RyanAghdam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great website!
- shinta86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great. I loathe AOL as a whole.
- adminmatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2only low class street whores use AIM still. Trillian all the way bitches.
- RyanAghdam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry for my lack of Mac clients. Thanks for your comments about the lack of them. I'll research them and add them to the website. Thank you.
- RMuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Nerd in me says yes, but all of my friends are firmly rooted in AIM and have no reason to switch, nor will they without conciderable effort.
I only use the actual AIM client for linked S.N's because it's easier that Gaim, and the only other reason it's even on my system is because you can't unblock people who aren't on you buddylist through Gaim. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When you use trillian or adium or ichat or whatever, you're still using the AIM network. Hate the client, don't hate the network it rode in on.
- RyanAghdam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I love boycotts!" ~Rinsan
Who doesn't? - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1AIM Adhack works nicely and you don't have to deal with any of the inconveniences that the alternatives all have.
- modpancake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been using Trillian for YEARS.
And every few months without fail, someone who is freshly sick of AIM will walk up to me and tell me about Trillian... =P - mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pointless, no digg.
i use trillian pro, and 90% of the people in my contact list come from aim, with msn coming in second. no problems with their network at all, in fact, my msn connection is usually the one to crap out temporarily. msn messenger 7.0 is great, though, with its video conversation mode, skins, backgrounds, thumbnails of images before you accept recieving them, etc.
they're all the same nowadays. as long as it has text, audio, and video, who cares what you use? just depends on what your friends use. - driedwater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://middleman.krunchsoftware.com/
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Aim is actually a great client aside from the ads...I have yet to use a open source client that can do every single thing aim does including gaim and other...gaim is nice but when you want to do certain things only aim can handle it. Aim triton looks pretty nice by the way :)
- snapcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I find all these comments from people saying "but my friends use AIM so I can't switch". These alternatives let you chat with people on AIM! Read more before commenting. Go use something like GAIM or Trillian and you can be on several different chat clients at once (MSN, Yahoo, AIM, etc). Alot of the people commenting really don't seem to get it.
- leetsauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CaptSnuffy: Yes, I have used Trillian. I didn't like the feel of it. I also didn't like the way it renders user profiles.
I agree, we should boycott Trillian. - driedwater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Use Middle Man.. a lot like dead aim but it is free.
- CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0leetsauce, have you used trillian? All functions from AIM work and it has craploads of extra features.
I didn't think many people still used aim, i thought everyone had switched to one of the superior 3rd party ones. - TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ive never and will never use the official aim client GO TRILLIAN!
- Speak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Obscurity is the death of a communication medium, and while I do use IRC and Jabber, in the end, if someone is asking for your IM in real life, they typically don't want your google talk or what have you. So, boycotting AIM the network is simply digging a grave for yourself socially. I'd say this website is a good primer as to why you don't want AIM, but I think it could use either a more indepth description of malware or a link to one, while I tell these things to my family/friends and the response I typically get is an annoyed, "I don't care."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have not used AIM in a LONG time. Most of my friends are on Yahoo or MSN. Google needs some time to improve and to catch up.
~mario - PhaseDMA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would boycott Trillian. Talk about a bulky piece of *****.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree, boycotting trillian would make much more sense with it being so bulky and taking forever to start up
- PhaseDMA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The bottom line is AIM is by far the least bulky client (first party or otherwise). Ya the network has issues, but in general this is a simple fact of life with a product that has such a large market cap.
- diablo2007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can no longer reach the boycottaim website, did AOL manage to shut it down for fear of it making an impact on sales or what?
- Seaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AIM 5.5.3598 + DeadAIM 4.1
Forget Trillian. - Pooavenger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0aim never made me upgrade. this website is false. I'm using an old version with no problems.
- krazyfiend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i agree with dnehthend... DeadAim with the newest version of aim that it supports works just fine and allows all the function Gaim and Trillian have yet to provide (slowly getting there) that Dead Aim / Aim allows ...
- RyanAghdam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I fixed the digg link problem.
- Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"can't you just copy the protocol's plugin dll?"
I wasn't aware that was possible. I'll check it out. Thanks. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bah, the offical AIM client is getting worse and worse... still can't blame them for the ad's something has to pay for the bandwidth, but spyware.. ergh
- Spazkake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0their digg link goes to thinkgeek :(
- semicolon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would love to ditch AIM altogether, but the people that I talk to on AIM just don't care what network they use. So if I want to talk to them I have to use AIM.
- snapcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AIM/AOL sucks... and it has for a long time. I used to use it a long time ago, then switched to an old trillian copy I got from someone, then I had to reformat and switched to GAIM. The bad thing about GAIM is they've borked the DCC. Because of that, I ditched GAIM, at least untill they fix it, and now use another copy of Trillian. I'll have to look into that Miranda though, never heard of it before.
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AIM is just a protocall many people use it in the US, I use it, you can chat with ICQ people on it and AOL needs to support itself by putting ads in the program to keep it free. I don't see any problems here.
- mushroom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its just another Boycott site that whont be around for long do you all remember the Boycott Microsoft site witch die a few years back guess what Microsft is still around
- leetsauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The site will flop.
It has no market. Who are you targeting? Users that are nerdy/geeky enough to know about the alternatives and wanted to switch most likely have already. Everyday users that use AIM just to talk with their friends wouldn't give a *****. This is the truth. Unless 3rd party clients have function that is significantly better than the official or something to attract users, many casual users will not be willing to switch. They don't care about the ads, they don't care about the spyware; they just don't care. As long as its what everyone else is using and is the official client, then they'll continue to use it.
Who are you trying to appeal to here? Casual users will not switch, believe me. I've attempted to convince a few of my friends to switch to Firefox, and they've refused time after time simply because most of the world is using IE. They don't want the hassle of switching, and, according to my friend, they want to see websites like how "everybody else sees it". Makes no sense, but that's how they are.
Another scenario would be AIM having a big problem that's really annoying people. Your response to this would probably be "oh AIM has spyware." If the user isn't smart enough to actually remove the spyware (like I have. I use the official AIM client with DeadAIM), then you can't possibly expect them to switch to something they've probably never heard of.
Switching from AIM, which has many functions that 3rd party clients doesn't have, is almost like downgrading. Gaim is great. I use it on Linux. But I would never replace AIM on Windows with Gaim. Why? AIM on Windows is simply much better. Gaim has many of AIM's functions, but some are really missing and dodgy. Direct connections don't work very well, profiles don't load the same, etc. Worst of all, Gaim requires another library (GTK) to draw, making it less responsive.
Finally, boycotting AIM will never work. Once AOL realizes that their official client users have dropped, they will attempt to get those numbers back up. They're not going to drop AIM, no, they're just going to change the protocol. When they do, 3rd party users will have to wait for the developers to crack the protocol again and come up with a new version. But until then, users are forced to use the AIM client. If AOL somehow comes up with something that is convincing enough for the users to stay, the 3rd party clients loses. - vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I would probably use Miranda all the time if it allowed multiple simultaneous account connections on the same service."
can't you just copy the protocol's plugin dll?
that's what you do for IRC
miranda is simply the best client to use if you're on windows. - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0aim 5.2.3292 + deadaim 3.28
completely free and fairly clean/fast
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=aim
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=deadaim
I would move to GAIM, but I have gotten used to the current AIM client. Perhaps someday... - Chromakode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Spotted a typo on the contact page:
Free free to email me. boycottaim@gmail.com if you have any comments, questions, or >anythign< at all.
I think this is a great idea, but I don't think it presents a very strong argument for the alternatives. If I were you, I would argue more towards using Jabber as a free IM network and the positive benefits of using more modern systems. Good idea, but I don't think the message will reach many people in it's current state. - RyanAghdam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks Chromakode. I'll fix that typo.
I agree with you completely. Peple just don't want to change. Something bad has to happen to AOL. Hopefully it will. - jn1167, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Boycott that site. Too much anti-Yankee stuff there. Boston can smoke my bag. Ballbag that is.
- bunzzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0aim 5.2.3292 + aimutation = no ads either ...tabbed chat windows... works great for me... any newer versions of aim suck...
trillian is also a great alternative if u use multiple chat clients. - TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple should just release iChat for Windows. Tie it in with iTunes and you got a winner.
- Mongoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0omg, thats awesome. /puts it in my trillian profile.
- Mexrocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0W00t... Trillian
