"We're sensitive to people calling their software BitTorrent to achieve a certain level of popularity in order to distribute spyware and adware," Navin said.
Spyware and adware. That's what they're worried about. All the current good clients will most likely be able to still use the name BitTorrent because they don't bundle nasty stuff. This isn't as big a deal as it seems. - noelsusman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Worst title and description ever??? Did anybody even rtfa.
"People who want rights to use the BitTorrent trademark to market or brand their own products will have to pay a "nominal" fee to the company, which will review the software to ensure it is in compliance with a set of security standards."
It's not really clear whether that means free torrent clients like Azureus and Utorrent or whether it only applies to commercial products. My interpretation is that it will mean that all free torrent clients will have to do this. - RKMBrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I see this as a good thing... spyware hacks on Napster was a royal PITA. If this means keeping torrent tools safe from those money grabbing tools i'm for it.
- RadicalBender, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here we go with the paranoid, know-nothing diggers apparently. OMG BT R SELLOUTS RGGGH!
- Yorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Am I the only one who sees this as a good thing?
He may have written the first BitTorrent protocol, but if he was smart enough to trademark the term, this will allow him to be compensated for his work while keeping the software open source. - tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I must admit that I would do the same thing if I was in his place. . . as long as it doesn't hurt the current community that detests the original bt client, then I am fine with it...bt sucks compared to utorrent or azurius
- Double-Z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BitTorrent is starting to seem less cool these days.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How long before it's no longer open sourced?
- Alt1ma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I see it as a violation of a trust I thought me and bittorrent had
- x2dx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hrm most people are going to give him the finger when they say you cant use that name anymore
- saysaknow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1At first I thought people were calling it a different name. Bad title.
- mockstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, this should go smoothly...
- leftfoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol @ mockstar
Seriously though... I don't think this will turnout too well... - foofightrs777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How long until someone puts Cohen's picture in the "Sell out" entry on wikipedia?
- LukeDashJr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think "BitTorrent" is quite common use... "torrent" probably is, though...
- Massif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I never realized spyware and adware in the actual bittorrent clients was that big of a problem. I always thought the problem was in the files being distributed.
- dynamx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1bittorrent is dying anyways....ask any rogers canada cable internet subscriber.
- digman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its time to look for the next bitorrent
- tobtoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not a lawyer, but if my knowlege from my uni intellectual property course is correct (and it probably isn't), I was under the impression that once a 'brand name' entered common use, if you had never trademarked it before, it was too late to apply for one. Even trademarks that have been registered but have entered common use lost their status (eg band aid, spam).
So in this case, can the term BitTorrent be trademarked at all? - exick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Is it just me or does all caps make you think of someone screaming like that big mouth guy from Dilbert TV show... What was his name?"
I don't know, but the all-caps combined with the curious punctuation, typos, and various other problems with that comment make me think it was typed by someone with Tourette's of the fingers. - _Caboose_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"bittorrent is dying anyways....ask any rogers canada cable internet subscriber."
I'm on Rogers in Canada, and all I have to say is this: 1720. :) - ArthurSucks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"IN CURIOUS ON WHICT BITTORRENT TYPE PROGS THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT..?? ANYONE KNOW TO WHO THEY ARE REFERRING I HOPE NOT BITTORNADO"
I doubt it's any open source app.
Is it just me or does all caps make you think of someone screaming like that big mouth guy from Dilbert TV show... What was his name? - teacher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What the heck is 1720 ?
- GundamFreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What exactly is they trying to trademark? BitTorrent? If so, does that even affect names like uTorrent and BitTornado? Or is it like "ipod," anything named i_____ and Apple has control? And are there even a BT client that has spyware? Because I have seen or use one.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"IN CURIOUS ON WHICT BITTORRENT TYPE PROGS THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT..?? ANYONE KNOW TO WHO THEY ARE REFERRING I HOPE NOT BITTORNADO"
Ask again without caps lock like a big boy, and I'll tell you. - 0Troy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1And the BT community utters a collective "WTF?"
- cprior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is another article in the series of "Let's see who is really literate and checks the facts on the internet".

- kAtalyst, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1suprise!!
- gODfall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Bittorrent?? LMAo this is simply retarded.
- Pooavenger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well if they do then all the other software developers will just come up with a new name then BOOM bittorrent goes under. they should just deal with it.
- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I understand why they are doing it. Not to be evil, but actually to protect us from spyware and such. Works for me. *shrug*
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"bittorrent is dying anyways....ask any rogers canada cable internet subscriber."

Hahahahaha! That is brilliant! - karch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1don't be so scared, jesus *****!
just because the title is a whole bunch of fud doesn't mean you know what the article's about! - MoonKing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Is it just me or does all caps make you think of someone screaming like that big mouth guy from Dilbert TV show... What was his name?"
DID YOU MEAN LOUD HOWARD? - Redlobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did anyone read the article right?! He is trying to prevent a kazaa like client filled with spyware and adware. And since you have probably downloaded over 5,000 dollars worth of software, movies, and mp3s just donate some money for those "nominal" fees. You guys want to have your cake and eat it, too. Then, sleep with the woman who baked the cake, and leave a big crap in her toliet in the morning.
- Ribald_Jester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ah hah hah ha...
Bittorrent is now hollywood's favorite little kid and the legislation is already beginning. Sure it sounds nice now, but that's just to get the claws in. It'll get much much worse soon. Only thing hollywood knows to do is shovel money into it's gaping maw. - MoFoKeR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0NO JUST THAT ALL MY PW'S ARE ON CAPS SO I LEAVE IT ON BUT BACK TO THE SUBJECT
- illegal_op, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2this is what happens when $$ comes into play
