- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -70/+798Of course Bill Gates isnt like Steve Jobs.
Steve Jobs doesn't spend his billions trying to eradicate disease, famine, and poverty.
He just likes to take dog and pony shows around and spout hyperbole in a turtleneck. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+722Im as much of an apple fanboy as anyone on digg, but for the richest man alive, i think bill gates came off as a relatively decent guy. he was nervous, but i mean... he's a geek
- haiduz, on 10/12/2007, -37/+395It was so weird to see gates leave. However, from his perspective he never goes on talk shows and he goes on business meetings where his minutes are worth hundreds of thousands. As the world's richest man, he has the authority to leave a meeting when its finished and not just sit around and shoot the *****.
You may hate microsoft because youre an apple/linux fanboy but bill gates revolutionized the world one way or another through Microsoft. However, now he donates Billions to improve our world by outreaching to the poor. Bill Gates has help the world become more productive, and as a result has the resources to be the world biggest philanthropist.
Now steve jobs is also and extraordinary man, but compared to bill gates his 5% computer market share and dominant mp3 player market share is hardly an accomplishment, compared to microsoft's and his philanthropic accomplishments. - SirNoobius, on 10/12/2007, -10/+343would've been more entertaining if Balmer went up and sang developers.
- simplenation, on 10/12/2007, -36/+308i like bill gates, just not microsoft.
- Noobuntu, on 10/12/2007, -24/+214Gates = probably the most uber nerd ever
- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -8/+156", i think bill gates came off as a relatively decent guy."
He is a decent guy, he is doing alot to better humanity with his foundation. As an Apple guy myself I admit that, but I still have my reservations about his operating systems. - Bleeblaow, on 10/12/2007, -20/+155"You'd think with his billions of dollars he could hire some people to teach him how to do an interview."
Uh, you sit there and answer questions. He did a fine job at that. Eat *****. - TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -9/+112I like Bill Gates a lot. Nice, fun guy that does good with his money. Not quite so fond of his product.
And he may have seemed nervous just because he's on the Daily show. It's not really his job to be relaxed and cool on TV. - r3drum, on 10/12/2007, -2/+95damn.. he left before Jon got his password.
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -10/+71I agree, but at least that was one of the funniest parts of the interview, and its all about the funny.
- listrophy, on 10/12/2007, -41/+99I'm sorry. I like Jon Stewart as much as the next digger, but didn't he seem a bit like a Micosoft shill? I mean seriously. A double-length interview that barely poked fun at Gates? wtf.
- Holyfool19, on 10/12/2007, -3/+60THAT! Ladies and gentlemen, is a real nerd.
The nervous laughter, the silly jokes, the cracking voice.
See "Revenge of the Nerds" and you will sympathize with this wonderful man. - tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -20/+75Maybe Colbert will take him on and ask some real questions regarding OS X Tiger and how similar the two OS's are. As a spoof of course.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+53Heh, Gates is a real geek, Jobs is a marketing guy. This interview really makes you remember that fact. NEVER put the geeks in front of the camera. :)
- xaaronreevesx, on 10/12/2007, -12/+61Holy crap Vista came out. I will have to go to the store and buy it. Thanks for showing me this clip!
- SirNoobius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+47I felt violated
- PostalBean, on 10/12/2007, -16/+61Bill Gates can handle a business a lot better than Steve Jobs.
- Swimming_Bird, on 10/12/2007, -2/+46Why are all you acting like jackasses. I'd like to see any of you get on the daily show and act as calm and collected as you're expecting Gates to be. He's not the PR person for MS.
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -10/+54I thought Bill Gates came off well in that interview... the guy who didn't come off well was Jon Stewart. I couldn't tell if he was joking or if he was really that clueless about computers. I think it was a bit of both. Honestly, it seemed kind of like a waste of time for Gates, so I wouldn't blame him for wanting to get out of there as soon as it was over. With politics, Stewart mixes intelligent discussion with humour.. but I kind of felt like he had no clue what would be funny when it came to computers.
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+43I ROFLed when John asked, "Is your screen saver the flying toasters," because I could see Bill die a little inside.
For those who don't know, the flying toasters was one of the original screensavers for the early Macs. - natmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+43"Call me."
- kaiwai, on 10/12/2007, -8/+49I hope you actually realise that it is a well known fact that Bill Gates has aspergers/etc which means that what one might see as being odd, or not-socially acceptable to him, is perfectly logical - basically lacking the 'soft side' of logical; its very common amoungst incredibly bright people.
Bill Gates is the equivilant to Waz from Apple, the difference is, Bill does have a certain degree of ability to communicate publically, from his body language, he doesn't actually see that he enjoys it much where as Steve Jobs thrives on the sort of attention which Bill tends to run from.
You can see it when Bill and Balmer are onstage; Bill does the technical side, and Balmer does the razzle-dazzle required to push the product. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -15/+53John Stewart has always been a shill. He's the Larry King of comedy. He doesn't ask tough questions so he can get good guests.
- reldruh, on 10/12/2007, -13/+48"I'm sure most of us will spend the next few months explaining to our Girlfriends and Parents why they should upgrade."
Is there a 'not' missing from that statement? - treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -8/+40"Gates has a terrible track record. He's a brilliant businessman, but he's a failure as the pioneer he likes to portray himself to be. Gates got it wrong."
Not Gates, Microsoft.
When your company gets to the sheer size that MS is, innovation is typically not a direction you can quickly and easily move into. And actually from a business perspective, waiting for the first movers to take their turn is a very good move. You let those with the energy and fresh perspective create a new market, and then if you see it succeed... then utilize your workforce and resources to chase and overtake that market.
And there have actually been some innovative products come out of Microsoft, such as MSN TV: http://www.msntv.com/pc/ ... IPTV anyone?
They launched it way back in 2003, way before any of the media-center, IPTV craze. Problem is they didn't market it well enough.
Yes I would say Gates at his age now has probably lost a lot of the innovative thinking of his younger days. But if you just look at how Microsoft was started and grown, I would say that he is definitely a "pioneer". - danakin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34"Hey, do you have pets?!"
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37Why does an interview with Bill gates have to be filled with Apple fanboys, posts about Steve Jobs and Mac? Oh wait, this is digg.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -2/+32You sure does types like one.
...excuse me, that was rude. - captjc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29Nice, despite the total lack of John "I'm a PC" Hodgman. How sweet would that have been.
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33"He's leaving! ... he can't just leave" 0.o
- Reidtheweed01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28I think the reason it was so long might have something to do with the fact that he has the richest man in the world sitting right there. Also it might have to do with the fact that the products bill gates makes have a huge impact on the world.
He's not just some guy in the remake of a ***** 1980's horror movie. - SIRBERUS, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32In his defense, I have read that he has a type of autism that makes him a bit twitchy when anxious or nervous.
- kazumaSHELL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25"Welcome back to Hannity & Colmes, I'm Chuck Norris sitting in for Sean Hannity tonight."
- xigxag, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27Do you not understand that the VAST majority of PC users/buyers are not like us? They don't keep up on OS wars and upgrades. They will go to bestbuy to buy a laptop, and say "Hey, Mr. Geeksquad guy...what is this Vista thing?" Then they will proceed to get unknowingly raped with a $300 memory upgrade and a warranty that costs as much as the machine.
- Xageroth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27It's actually a little more interesting to me that any mention of Gates involves Jobs and vice versa as though we're still watching an epic battle. These two guys are both able to do anything they want and both have impacted the world in profound ways. Does it really mean much to drum up these kinds of competitive conversations at this point? They both deserve our respect and admiration. Can't we just leave it at that and smile?
- zeptobyte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Just because he's brilliant doesn't mean he has people skills. Really, great engineering and social ability are not often found on the same person.
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28I wasn't sure what he was gettig at when he asked that, I don't think Bill was either. That's the beauty of it.
- Bleeblaow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Uhh, he knew that. That would explain "wasn't sure." Note the past tense.
- captjc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23I would pay to see that
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Between this and Dmitry Martin, it's apparently MS Windows Vista night on Comedy Central.
- Kev13Dd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20I liked the end
The Daily Show: Now available on iTunes - zephc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24A kernel is a type of program.
/pedantic - punkrockxtian, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21"enuf" What are you, FIVE?
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Jon always does softball interviews. To some extent, you have to pay some respect to the most successful self-made man in the world.
Actually, in reality, Jon Stewart is a Mac user. He's stated on several occasions that he has a Mac that he uses to type and play Doom, and also that he knows absolutely nothing about computers or how they work. - jakatak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Bill Gates on The Daily Show was not a good fit. Bill is trying to talk about technology and Jon is talking about porn. Bill should do that type of stuff on Dateline or 20/20 and stay away from comedy shows.
By the way, Bill did seem nicer than I thought, but what a geek! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I think Gates comes off as vulnerable enough without being picked on. I think Stewart has some decency too.
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I'm sure Bill didn't leave the interview just because he was nervous. If you watched, he said that he was on his way to London. He's probably on a very tight schedule. I also loved that extra big drink of what I presumed to be coffee.
A man of his work must not sleep much when you have to attend that many events in a single day. Hats off. - allenu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15@SEMW
Never heard of the movie Revenge of the Nerds? Sounds like you are thinking of the documentary film Triumph of the Nerds that Cringely put together.
Hmm, not know about Revenge of the Nerds, but knowing about Cringely's documentary; now that's nerdy! - Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15*Silicone* Valley, eh?
