- mathwizkid, on 09/21/2008, -1/+51Cool they didn't forget pen and paper in this technology age.
- Budo7, on 09/21/2008, -2/+21I love open source software, and I really like what Lifehacker does each day.
- HeatVision, on 09/22/2008, -1/+12What makes this list even better is that it's all on one page. I am so tired of "Top Ten" lists that feel the need to spread it over ten pages.
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -1/+7AVG is not the best but there are some other cool programs here. :-)
- Destinatus, on 09/22/2008, -0/+6I read it as as "The High Five Winners"
We both have mild dyslexia, HIGH FIVE! - blueintrigue, on 09/22/2008, -0/+4IMHO it is not.
Its bloated and slows my system down which to me is a big enough reason for not having it.
Its link Scanner tries to babysit me while on the net. I don't need it I can protect myself by not clicking on suspicious link on my own, I don't need a program which consumes my resources to do it.
My vote would go to Avast for free antivirus and Kaspersky (which i use) for paid antivirus - equinoxChild, on 09/22/2008, -0/+4pen and paper... hmm, i'm going to try that out... is it a free download?
- shivasprogeny, on 09/22/2008, -0/+3You can log into Pidgin and still talk with all your contacts from other IM services.
- TheBigSquid, on 09/22/2008, -0/+3I was thinking the same thing you were. That makes it a hive mind high five!
- WillyWonka, on 09/22/2008, -0/+2It sucks that mint.com is US only.
I can vouch for Notepad++, I use it all day long as a coding IDE and it works great. Never had a problem with it.
Just trying out ccleaner.com. We'll see after a reboot if I messed up my computer or not :) - inactive, on 09/22/2008, -1/+3Great
- brownsound00, on 09/22/2008, -0/+2way to be on topic.
- seltaeb4, on 09/22/2008, -1/+3We all knew you were going to say that.
- Giga, on 09/22/2008, -1/+3And that only goes to show how bad the current lineup is...
- Elranzer, on 09/22/2008, -0/+2AVG7 was GREAT, but they dropped the ball with AVG8. LinkScanner, bloated heuristics, slow, etc... it was *supposed* to be a replacement for the bloated and slow Norton AntiVirus. Now it's just as big and bloated.
These days I use ClamWin on my Windows machines, and schedule manual scans (ClamWin doesn't do "real-time" scanning, which is a good thing for speed). - HiVoltRock, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1Pidgin is the best. Period. They're not talking about video chat software, it's INSTANT MESSAGE software...and that's why Pidgin is the chosen. I do agree Pidgin should integrate video somehow, but that's not high priority for them. If you want video chat use something else.
- Elranzer, on 09/22/2008, -1/+2The only good start page is about:blank
- carboncopy77, on 09/22/2008, -2/+3Not a bad list, most picks I will agree with.. But does anyone know of a mint.com like site that works for Canadian financial institutions?
- Oline61, on 09/23/2008, -1/+2wrong
- Torx, on 09/22/2008, -2/+3Best calendar is rainlendar, imo.
- Elranzer, on 09/22/2008, -1/+2I'm sure all seven people that use it agree.
- dbradman56, on 02/19/2009, -0/+1yeah it is that :)

http://talismanclick.com - nmaster64, on 09/25/2008, -0/+1I disagree. I think, especially with the much improved memory performance of the newest version, Digsby has surpassed Pidgin in terms of functionality and design. Me and everyone I know who's tried it has converted from Pidgin...
- enterneo, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1AVG is not bloated (perhaps the reason it is liked along with the fact that is free!). However I understand the pain over "LinkScanner", it eats up 80% of the network traffic by constantly pinging to the webservers; having said that AVG soon released a patch that allows you disable the LinkScanner once and for all.
Kaspersky used to be good, and anyway it is a paid software so cannot be put into the same perspective. The only alternative as good as AVG is ClamWin (already mentioned)
@blueintrigue - do give AVG 8 a try, its a solid "free" program. (I have even put it on VM and still working efficiently, not a bloat anymore) - thefinger, on 09/23/2008, -0/+1ah.... another JW...... sorry not today
- ethana2, on 09/22/2008, -1/+1Notepad++ only exists because gedit and kate don't have windows ports yet.
- Domainstyling, on 09/22/2008, -2/+2Cool!
- inactive, on 09/23/2008, -1/+1LOL
- spanglegluppet, on 09/22/2008, -2/+2Good list - I use or have used quite a few of them. :)
- akhrikas, on 09/23/2008, -0/+0So top ten Best Software 2008 ?
- liuite, on 09/22/2008, -2/+1pen & paper? who would have thought.
- diggdatt, on 09/22/2008, -2/+1How many lists like this do we need? Everyday a list like this makes the homepage. Buried as duplicate, so my bury is rated higher.
- seltaeb4, on 09/22/2008, -4/+2It must be cool living in Canada because you get free health care. But then you get totally screwed on the price of paperback books.
Sometimes life sucks. - inactive, on 09/23/2008, -4/+2Azureus > uTorrent
- diggPPT, on 09/22/2008, -4/+1How could they have forgotten pen and paper when they tout Video-less Pidgin to be the best possible IM client around?...
- rollerboy, on 09/22/2008, -4/+1Wrong! Best start page is actually the Wikipedia Main Page. I have been underrating pen an paper, no more!
- ClarenceDarrow, on 09/22/2008, -6/+2Good list. I'd find it hard to beat Yahoo IM becasue there are literally millions of users chatting online from the US to Asia for free on a daily basis. I am also going to take a look at Notepad ++ but I have been hooked on EditPlus for years.
- shilpamg, on 09/22/2008, -6/+1i have used Notepad++ for editing and this is really very good and easy in use.
- shilpamg, on 09/22/2008, -5/+0i have used Notepad++ for editing and this is really very good and easy in use.
- nongeekboy, on 09/22/2008, -6/+1Great list! I'm not so sure about DownThemAll, but except that.. lifehacker, your list rules!
- enterneo, on 09/22/2008, -6/+1heh!, get ready to be buried deep down, AVG 8 is currently the best AV software.
- blueintrigue, on 09/21/2008, -10/+4A great list except the 'best antivirus'
To me AVG is a joke, or should I say was a joke untill i switched to Ubuntu 6 months back.
I doubt AVG has improved dramatically in this 6 months. - zorrobiwan, on 09/22/2008, -7/+0Funny, I used almost all of them ;-)
- TheBigSquid, on 09/22/2008, -8/+1Anyone else read the headline as 'The Hive Mind Winners'?
- GarryBarker, on 09/22/2008, -12/+2What a joke of a list, they skipped over so many superior mac utilities.
- pudgeb, on 09/21/2008, -11/+1Best search engine is spotlight on Mac OSX
