http://www.planetdvb.net/staxrip - count_z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The guys who are complaining about the .NET framework are a bunch of losers. He took the time to make an application that a lot of people will find to be useful, he's giving it away free of charge AND he's giving you the source. No one is forcing you to use it, so grow-up.
So the guys is using .NET? Big deal lots of Windows apps do these days and when Vista rolls around I'd venture to say that most new apps will use the .NET framework? Would you be happier if it was an MFC application? Or how about only straight win32 API calls? Do you know the difference? Do you even care? You do you just want to show what jack-asses you are.
It's free and it works (if you have a Windows system at least) if you don't like it go use something else rather than sit on your collective asses and bitch about it... or even better go make your own über cool ripper/encoder and give it away free of charge and see how people flame you. - kepsux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The .net dependency sucks, I agree. But you can install .net express in place of .net according to the creator of StaxRip. Here's a linky. http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vb/default.aspx
- L0t3k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You people have to be kidding. The source is GPL'd, and you're screaming that it runs on the .NET framework, so its too closed? What, because you need the ability to rewrite the framework libraries? Whatever... you folks can do without. *****, I'll bet 90% of you use software written on the .NET framework every day.
Personally, I thank the man for writing a slick app AND releasing his source. It was a nice thing to do and I appreciate it. - count_z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
"I believe they are angry when someone offers them an "Open Source" and "Free" application that is neither. Looks like a chore to me. Please help Microsoft update it's software..."
The app is free (so's the .NET framework)... no you have to pay a penny for it. And as for Open Source... do you want to sit around an argue the symanics of what "open source" means? He includes the source to the application, isn't that good enough?
If I write application for OS/X and give you the source to my app will you complain that you don't have the source to the Quartz Extreme libraries so my app isn't really open source?
He's being very cool by offering the app and the source free rather than charging for it or making it cripple/share ware. - Exstatica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I still like Auto Gordian Knot Better, plus it allows you to choose the size. http://www.autogk.me.uk/
- thelonecabbage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This isn't an encoder, it's a GUI. Though a true .NET encoding library would be pretty sweet, this isn't it.
- kortiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1testing it with x264 ATM, very easy to use
- Phssthpok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Someone writes some software and gives it away for free and all you people do is complain about how the .NET framework is used?
I believe they are angry when someone offers them an "Open Source" and "Free" application that is neither. Looks like a chore to me. Please help Microsoft update it's software... - inactive, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1FYI, staxrip allows for you to choose the size douche.
- zeppo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AutoGK is good but it has largely ceased updates. Though a minor upgrade was released a few weeks ago
no new functionality like H264 will be added. Maybe StatXrip can be of some help. - JanesDaddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ poipoipoi - "I wish there were NEGATIVE Diggs"
That would be a good thing. Then all the lame stories would get negative scores, and the ones above the parapet would still shine... What happens with the current "OK This is lame" button? - avonej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ wiggimt
Yes, I agree that technically because his code is licensed under the GPL that it is Free Software. But it's Free Software restricted to a proprietary operating system. While I'm sure you and many others see no issue with this because you ARE in fact using a proprietary operating system, you have to realize that the entire Free Software movement started with the creation of the most important software component (the OS) of the computer under a copyleft license.
To further illustrate what I am trying to point out, namely the uselessness of Free Software if it is restricted to a proprietary environment (this promotes the utilization of this environment), this is what rms himself said in response to a question asking whether or not free software projects should be ported to a proprietary OS:
"Porting free applications to nonfree operating systems is often useful. This allows users of those operating systems to try out using a few free programs and see that they can be good to use, that free software won't bite them. This can help people overcome worries about trying a free operating system such as GNU/Linux. Many users really do follow this path. However, we need to be careful to avoid suggesting that the purpose of free applications is to be used on a proprietary system in that way. Using free applications is a step forward, but it doesn't take you all the way to freedom. To reach that destination, we need to avoid the proprietary software that denies users their freedom."
And keep in mind that his response is talking about free software projects that have their roots in an open source environment that are merely being ported to a closed source operating system in ADDITION to supporting the original free OS. His statements don't even begin to cover why open source projects restricted to closed source operating systems are detrimental to the Free Software Movement as a whole. - wiggimt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In re of avonej:
Do you see projects being kicked off of Sourceforge because they aren't cross-platform? The whole point of SF is to have Free and Open software, so why can't this guy's software be "paraded around like it was free software"? - edwardh2o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@midnightbrewer
Yeah. It not only wants dotnet it wants the newest "ms installer". It might be open-source but it uses so many closed technologies it's scary. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanx.... just what i needed
- notkevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ha! Someone writes some software and gives it away for free and all you people do is complain about how the .NET framework is used?
- Giraff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For mp4for the psp, you dould do far worse than having a look at pspvideo9.com
That also a free program. - glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0honestly I'd love all programs to be written in assembly but we don't always get what we want
Grow up people, if you don't like the program because you have to download some large .NET file then maybe you should build your own program, ever thought of that?
And what do you think great programs like paint.net was built on? - Giraff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1*note to self - check spelling before pressing submit*
- xioner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0um, why need .NET?
I'm happy with AutoGK on Windows, it does a good job and can run on a lot of systems, also drops into the background well. I once had 3 P3s with minimal memory chugging away at AGK overnight, worked great. - INHUMANITY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was using Fair Use LE to make DVDtoDivX 700MB files. This looks very promising! DIGG!!
- avonej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, he may have released the source code, and yes this program may have been developed faster because it uses the .NET Framework. But the issue is, because it uses .NET, it will only work on Windows. And before you all start bitching about how most people use Windows anyway, the whole point of the GPL is to provide end user freedoms from the bottom up, ESPECIALLY when it comes to the most critical software component of a computer: the operating system.
By using .NET he effectively locks on any cross-platform compatability... definately not the way to go if we can get everyone out of this proprietary *****. Think of it this way: enough free/open source applications for Windows AND GNU/Linux are made, then people can use them on Windows and switching to GNU/Linux will be exponetially easier because they get to keep all the same programs. If programmers like these keep holding on to what they were taught in their college's lame computer science classes using Visual Studio or something nazi like that, we're never going to pull ourselves out of the proprietary Microsoft rut...
And I believe THAT is what is angering people about his development platform choice and then parading his application around like it is free software. - Demonoid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can un-Digg your dugg stories ya know....?... that was for Morph Ball
- Morph_Ball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Um, this app FAILS. It won't open. It worked the first time, but forget about it working again. Too bad I already dugg this~
- posure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As a software engineer, the .NET Framework 2.0 may have been a bad choice at this time because the install base is just developers...1.1 should be installed on every users machine since its a default on Windows Update.
- cmotd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0autoGK is finished monkeys FINISHED. No more updates so if you think you can sit on that for the rest of eternity to do your encoding then mebe you belong in a zoo. It doesn't use h264 so it's as useless as a steam powered zeppelin.
- snatchedlaus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does this convert into MP4?
I really need something that does that for my PSP - republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is this better than AutoGK? Meaning faster, easier, etc?
-Thanks! - twmsdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome. Now just to learn how to use it...

"Why has the world not decided on a standard between xvid or divx..?
Would make a lot more sense."
Because these XviD an DivX are compatible (both are MPEG4-ASP codecs) and the only difference is their FOURCC and the MP4-Container has been chosen to be the standard, not AVI. - awizzle22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0do you guys know any ones like this for OSX because net. 2.0 or whatever is supported by OSX or OSX doesnt support it or whatever i was reading reviews and i didnt cross my mind that i would need to use that browser or what ever so if some one can fix this or a better/ good quality converter... but I put this on on my pc and it is great
- haloevo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wouldn't have checked this out... but the fact that it has so many diggs got me to download it. Thanks. ;)
- Mulkiatsch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Windows is proprietary. So, according to your reasoning, every piece of Windows-based Free Software isn't really free, but it's »pretending to be free« and thus evil.
So you guys are boycotting a program BECAUSE IT'S FREE SOFTWARE? Why the heck would you do THAT?
By the way, considering that .NET really _is_ superior to MFC and the Windows C API, you should be _glad_ that this software uses it. Otherwise, it would probably have taken a _lot_ longer to develop. - bbrjch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow i cant believe there are newbs out there like this. I am on my iBook and I am smart enough to know that .net 2.0 is a Microsoft proprietary piece of software so of course it would not work or be compatible with Mac OS X.
- BLKMGK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hrm, like another poster I too have a PSP and need MP4 files. However I'm trying to get there with iPOD video BLOGs downloaded via iTunes :-) Can this puppy handle the transcoding from that format? I've yet to find something that will and yeah I tried Gordian, Video9, and a few others :-( Watching Diggnation via Quicktime blows - I want it on my PSP!
- mike1979, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does it work with DVR-MS files? I understand these files ARE MPEG-2 files, but with an XML wrapper - would be awful nice if it handled them too, then I can EASILY re-encode all of my tv shows to something a little more - manageable.
- steal_apps01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Just going to look at the program, Is there a digg feature to look at all my comments? I wrote one on the can the other day and can't remember what I said. My iBook rules but to use this StaxRip I need to use my windows box. I keep trying to press control+click.
- ZmasteR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0very nice piece of software +digg
