http://clam.iua.upf.edu/index.html - deut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I've tried the program last night when this story was at 1 digg. I'm sorry to report that it is really not that good. The blog is way off the mark. Sorry to disapoint you all.
- jhendrix86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13that's the biggest BS I've heard in the 2 hours I've been awake. Most people out there are pretty tone deaf and have crappy relative pitch. Just because you know how to play an instrument doesn't mean you have good relative pitch or perfect pitch.
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I have a pretty good ear and can usually pick out chords and notes without assistance. And there's a lot to be said for doing it by ear. However, I don't see anything wrong with using software to automate the process. Sometimes I may not want to listen to a song in chunks whlie writing out the notation. Computers are meant to make our lives easier. I say kudos to these guys if this really works. You wouldn't tell an accountant to keep a ledger longhand instead of using a spreadsheet or Quickbooks.

- afex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7a lot of times 'just listening' doesn't work for a lot of progressive rock/modern rock/numetal/etc (i'll call it the 'drop d' genre) bands, because they use really f'ed up chords. (see:deftones). there have been times where i actually ran things through FFT to see the diff frequencies, and pieced together the notes from that.

Please. Don't criticize others for wanting to express themselves through music just because they don't follow the same philosophical ***** you do.
It's not about lazyness, it's about wanting to learn something. Just because you use a tool to help you figure out chord patterns or notes doesn't mean you're letting something do all the work for you. You still have to be able to play what you've learned, and getting it to sound good (and close to the original) is still where most of the work lies. - dpk87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7cool. For those looking for guitar tabs, I use http://ultimate-guitar.com ,great site.
- tryferos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Fanon, I typically can pick stuff out with my ears too, but with alternate tunings, layers of effects, poor recording, etc., it can sometimes be hard to tell what the chords/notes in a song are. If this software can help out, then I'm all for it.
- iamtheratio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If you play an instrument, you should practice that instrument, and a great way to practice music theory is to try to figure out the songs/chords for yourself.
I've tried the TAB route myself when I first started playing.. but, 90% of Tablature is wrong so this might be a good thing for beginners.
So basically, I would suggest trying the songs out for yourself, if that doesn't work try this program, then if for some odd reason that doesn't work, try tabs. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Some experienced guitarist tend to try to intimidate budding guitarists by making the task of learning guitar seem harder or more complicated than it is. You might know this type of person by it's more common name "Asshat donkey puncher". If this works (which I cant test @ work) then it's a pretty cool tool, and nobody's impressed with the fact that you learn by ear. Encourage people learning to play, don't be an "Asshat donkey puncher."
- citizensagainst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If this works, it will really be a dream come true. No more faking along...
- poipoipoi, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11you must listen to easy songs.
- sporktek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I guess we know what the RIAA is going to go after next. If sharing tabs is illegal, I'd imagine they'd try to trick the legislature into believing that any method that allows a person to extract (poorly, even) music that you can play yourself from one of their bought-and-paid-for artist's tracks is illegal too.
- ProfessorRiffs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4olga if you want to visit the Most Wrong Tabs In The Known Universe Museum.
- gamerage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4To those of you that want us to use our ears, not everybody can do that. Believe me I have tried. I'm glad you can but give the rest of us a break.
- debtman7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3
I'm grateful to people that go to the trouble of providing OS X binaries, but it makes me crazy when they do it like this. There are around five installer packages to install to get this to work on OSX, when it could have all been packaged inside a single .app file which you could just double click to run. Grrrr. - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I use google, 'cause there are dozens of half-rate tab sites out there, and only a handful of them have the song I'm looking for, usually :p
- ryanmatthew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This program looks awesome!! I can't wait to try it out....I really hope it works.
- chocolatespoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sheesh!!! The stinkin program makes it easier and more efficient to learn new music. To go against it would be like sticking your nose up at folks who have opted for email over pen and ink.
- TriaLunae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Fanon
Enough of this. Some people like to play music, and if using a tool to help them learn a song allows them to play something that makes them happy, then there's nothing wrong with that. It's elitists like you that give tools like this a bad name because you think it's 'cheating' or the wrong way to do things.
Some of us would just like to be musical without all of you purists breathing down our necks. There's a difference between being tone deaf and not being able to discern the notes of a complex chord in a song with several different layers. - ProfessorRiffs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Just another thing to help people not train their ears. How sad. I teach guitar and almost every single student that comes through my door, regardless of how far along in their playing they are, cannot figure out even relatively simple songs by ear. I find it to be quite the drag. Do the work, people!
- readme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am really looking forward to trying this out. I am not sure how it would work as it has to isolate the instrument from the rest of the mix. In the past I have held my chromatic tuner up to recordings to sniff chords and notes and it works if the mix is not too busy. Maybe it EQs out frequencies that are not the instrument. Sounds cool but I am not really expecting a miracle.
- chaidreamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The thing is, the use of this kind of program is going to be the deciding factor in whether people abandon or embrace more music theory on their own. Either they're going to depend on it to do everything for them, or they can use it to help train their ears.
- gamerage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No need to curse my ears. I guess we disagree on this one. I assert that I do have business playing guitar even though I struggle with picking chords out of songs.
I doubt you grasp the full complexity of what you are saying. If you can discern the 12 tones in http://www.jmdl.com/howard/guitarchords/ then you are off to a good start but let's add minors into the mix. Now consider a few more from the thousands of chords out there. Who knows what this program can identify (since nobody can download it at the moment) but please allow me to use it. - H_o_p_s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@jhendrix86
You can implement rhythm in tab... just go out and look at any of the expensive tab books... - BitCrusher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sounds like a great idea but it seems their site has already taken on more traffic than it can handle.
- synthfx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4http://mxtabs.net/
much better site imo. gives ratings to how well ppl tabbed the songs. =) - Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For me it was just something I learned with time... however, I have a hearing disability so I still struggle to figure out a lot of songs. Especially notes on low E... I doubt this program will work all that well, but I'm gonna give it a shot.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I downloaded it, but i just seems to thow up error messages ALL THE TIME. Haven't got a single good run yet. Poor program :-(
- rotagivan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been trying to use software like this to try and figure out a guitar string in a old rap song but with no luck succeeding. I got the annotator downloaded and its hell compared to the others such as 7canaries,etc..The string would be really easy for someone to pick up by ear that knows how. I'm still a newbie at making my own music and picking out the notes used in a song. Anyone willing to figure this string out for me?
- umfskibum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ synthfx
Ultimate-Guitar gives ratings for how well the song is tabbed as well. - MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I've tried the TAB route myself when I first started playing.. but, 90% of Tablature is wrong so this might be a good thing for beginners."
Yeah, I feel bad for the beginners in the web generation. They'll be playing their cover songs totally wrong. :)
Trying to learn an instrument using the web is the worst approach. Like you said, 90% (possibly 99%) of the chord charts and tablature on the web is wrong. And I'm not talking about a note here and there, I'm talking about complete chords and keys are totally wrong.
Sometimes I'll use the web if I can't hear a guitar part on a particular song, but even then it's frustrating having to weave through all the tab sites only to find that they all link to the same charts that are wrong.
The sad thing about it is that most of these tab sites have a feature to add your vote for how well the author transposed the composition. Even the ones that get 5 stars are totally wrong. lol
I can't really knock the musicians for at least trying. But unfortunately, people use the Internet for fact and to find some truth... and that's just not going to happen with guitar tablature. - sgtstadanko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1too bad you cannot complete a download from them. looks like their network can't handle the traffic. OLGA anyone?
- twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you are trying to learn music, I suggest another format rather than rap. Something that has more instrument focus, and not so much on bass and vocals.
- jhendrix86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This looks pretty cool....but is it polyphonic?
Anyway..gotta love the Fast and Discrete Fourier Transforms - Quality26, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would be nice to have blogspam listed under the problem? drop down
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a dessert topping, and a floor wax!
- jhendrix86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2haha olga..most tabs online are at least 50% wrong. Some of them are just....way off. If only they figured out a way to implement rhythm in tablature.
- poipoipoi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2bad link'd again, thanks for the real link :)
- ovidius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been looking for something like this a long time. Hope it actually works!
- chhenning, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, how do you learn that? Is there any recommended way. I just started to play guitar.
- mrjones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sites seems dugg, so I can't RTFA. I wonder if it could be used as the base for a fingerprinting system.
- Cirieno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.harmony-central.com/Software/Windows/ct20.html
I was using this many years ago to grab chords out of CDs, and then later MP3s. Never let me down. - Skab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1torrent please?
- aj3289, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ahh. Looks sooo cool. I want to try it so bad...Digg effect right now....Looks great though...Would be really useful :)
- jhendrix86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Again..BS. Yes, I don't need software either since I personally almost have perfect pitch, but it doesn't mean I can apply it to everyone. Growing up in choirs and such, I still knew people who were tone deaf. Most people out there are tone deaf and don't even have good relative pitch.
- TriaLunae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's fantastic, and I'm sure for many people ear training is a legitimate and worthwhile pursuit. Remember, though, that this is a good tool with plenty of legitimate uses, and at this point I think any more prattle about how people are just using this program to be lazy is just being ignorant and arrogantly elitist.
