- Carsonauto, on 10/11/2007, -14/+94Office 2007 is a wonderful program. It looks great, and is very user friendly. Cost aside, it has no competitors. Come on.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -9/+70OpenOffice is slower than typewriting.
- betterth, on 10/11/2007, -7/+52Word 2007 all the way. It looks gorgeous, runs beautifully and the changes are great.
I could not be more satisfied with a word processor.
*****, I'm not even being paid to say this. >.>;; - estvir, on 10/11/2007, -10/+41How is it bloated ? And I seriously can't believe someone is even attempting to say OpenOffice is fast in any respects and trying to say it being written in Java is somehow a good thing.
- qishi, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26OpenOffice is not written in Java. It does use Java for some things, yes.
- SillyRabbits, on 10/11/2007, -4/+27Very simple answer. The best word processor is whichever one my boss/company/clients use. Anything else just creates more work for me and everybody else. In my case it ends up being MS Word.
- thekms, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18Stop your fanboyness, they both have their advantages and disadvantages so start recognizing them and try to be civil about it.

- JClassy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12I love Pages... yum styles!
- thekms, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17Why does everything on digg die... =[
- Theipolicy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Paper and pencil FTW.
- zydeco, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17LaTeX? You must be a graduate student.
- potterboy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12I was an avid OpenOffice user until the Office 2007 beta came along. I got my copy at a launch event as soon as possible. I can't use anything else, it feels so slow and clunky. It has a wonderful user interface. If only there was something like it for linux. Now my work pc is Windows only. :/
- boblmartens, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Do you know that it is not running in a native mode? It is using Rosetta is you are using a brand new computer ... so yes, it is slower.
- andregriffin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I'm all for competitiveness and all, but really, this is the one thing microsoft really has on lock. Office 2007 works brilliantly.
- modusop, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Pages is the best combo word proc/page layout for me - in education, you have to make lots of hybrid docs that look nice and are eye catching - in my estimation, that's the best tool for my job.
- Sc5i, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Well, don't forget on Intel Macs (ie. brand new Macs) there is the Rosetta penalty for loading.
- potterboy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8How can you say 2007 is more complicated than 2003? Have you even used it?
- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Online word processers fudged together with html/javascript/css are never going to be even close to the best. Once there's some offerings in Apollo and Silverlight they could be in the running - if Adobe can create a light version of Photoshop in Apollo then I'm sure Word can be done (to a decent extent at least).
File formats aren't exactly a critical issue. Microsoft takes backwards compatibility very seriously and anyone with Windows can open .doc files whether they have Office or not. I'm not sure how compatible .docx has become but eventually it'll be just as compatible. - jrbrewin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6edit.com, or vi... if you're going to arsey about it.
- theonlyvlad, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7"Although Microsoft claims that less than 5% of all users ever change any of the default settings in a program, I suspect it's a far higher percentage."
Thanks reviewer for letting us know that what you "suspect" is probably more correct than an actual R&D research by a major corporation. What would I do without you. - mcm297, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10LaTeX is so nice, some of the templates I've used in grad school are sweet (lncs, etc.) You have total control over the formatting, margins, fonts, even symbols.
It's a shame that the real world runs on Microsoft. I wrote a requirements document one time for a project that was developed, and just typeset it to Postscript. Wow did I get some backlash for that (they were hoping for a MS Word document which they could remove my name from it and substitute their own. Of course that was just a guess my friends postulated, haha.) - abhiroop, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8@BrandonPerry (#7310597)
I totally agree with this. Perhaps there are people who use all the features or even some of them. But I only need to be able to type, perhaps underline and make things bold. Other than that I really don't need any other features. and my computer is nothing amazing and OO starts up in about 8 s if it isn't preloaded (on start-up) and about 1 s, if it was preloaded on start-up.
I guess the argument for Word 2007 is that the UI is great and the feature suite is extensive. But point me to someone who uses all those features, that are provided. Its a WORD processor. The whole point is being able to type a document. If you want to do graphics use a publishing software!
I can imagine people saying that why not use notepad, if all you're interested in is typing. Well for practical reasons, I can print preview docs in OO, I can change font, etc a lot quicker and easier. Formatting (centre, justify), cannot be done on notepad. But other than that I don't think notepad is that bad as a word processor. - leinir, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10Normally this sort of thing would be welcome, but... It does not include KWord? Sorry, no digg from here. (no bury either, just not dugg)
- Tweakedenigma, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8Well as A Linux user I use Open Office and I do love it but In truth MS office is the best out there as far as Features/Capability. But even if I was still on Windows I would be using Open Office just cause I don't have 150 bucks or more to give away when I dont use the extra Features.
- Illidan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Office is pretty damn fast considering how absurdly much is packed into it - Open Office is unusable excepting on a very, very fast computer (for me.) That said, $400 is enough to change a slow computer to a very fast one...
- mattmcm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5they.misled.us...?
+1 - RoboPimp3000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Holy Crap. Was this website designed in 1994?
- dustyshadow, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5enjoy poverty
- Snarfy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Vim + ispell ftw!
- SillyRabbits, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6LateX is great for formal and long documents where you have to insert a lot of material (images, charts, equations) and have to keep track of citations and you need to adhere to a specific format. However, I sure wouldn't want to use it for everyday writing and reporting.
- RoboPimp3000, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I would bet my house that no one read the whole article :)
- wburglett, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6NO!
- Lassan, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7I'm sure you haven't tried MS Office 2007 yet. It's awesome! (and I ain't no "fanboi")
- flukus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Everyone saying open office is written in java is just making themselves look stupid.
And java is not slow, it hasn't been for years. Get with the times. Most of the time I hear that java sucks is from crappy vb coders that never understood the concept of object oriented programming. - ebbo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's pretty widely accepted that OO is slower to load than MS Office. See here for an actual performance comparison: http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=480
- ChrisMR, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3My top requirement would be that when I type it shows up on screen. I've used OpenOffice an MS Word, both function well, so who cares?
- unikuser, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I was also thinking that kword is missing from the list. I use it most of the times.
- imjustsayin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I think for the majority of people OpenOffice is perfectly functional and all they would ever need.
However, if you are more of a power user, Word 2007 is superior (IMO). There are things it does that are far better executed than any other word processing solution. I really love the depth of the features, and I think the new UI is very well thought out. Considering what you get, Office is a huge bargain. If you doubt me look at the historical prices of spreadsheet, word processors, etc.
Despite all that. Most people, particularly in private use, will never need more than OpenOffice. - Wilson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Once you know where everything is, like you already do with earlier versions, it's a much better interface. Don't knock just because the main menu eluded you.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1nothing beats a printing press
- peterinjapan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Apple's Pages is nice, since it's super fast and rock solid. I have a friend who has to live in Word and Excel all day, I pity the poor foo'.
- wburglett, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1NO!
- driya2000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Don't use a word processor for class notes. Try using a mind mapping software like FreeMind or Mind Manager. You'll find yourself more organized in your thoughts and studying will be easier.
- jrbrewin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3why not do what i did (whilst waiting for office2008), run office 2003 in crossover, it runs natively - superquick! :D
- EnsErmac, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Gimme QuarkXPress or InDesign so I can Track & Kern my text. All these word processors make abysmal looking documents. (LaTeX oddly enough does a great job with that)
- renrutal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'd say OpenOffice.org Writer comes close to Word, but when you take the whole suite into comparison, you really get what you pay for it.
- mattsfolio, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1OMG they forgot Bean... =(
- jrbrewin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2good question!
also, why do i keep getting logged out, randomly, all the time? it's freaking annoying -
