- joe90210, on 10/12/2007, -9/+66there's nothing about that design that would remind you of apple packaging
- casperize, on 10/12/2007, -11/+63Outstanding job, really nice packaging
- joe90210, on 10/12/2007, -4/+44the Ultimate edition looks sick
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/images/gallery/boxshots/web/WindowsVistaUltimate_web.jpg - joe90210, on 10/12/2007, -7/+41what's the point of pirating Vista if you're not gonna get this packaging? that's what I say.
- Raithmir, on 10/12/2007, -6/+39You need to get out more.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34If you read the text on the page, you'd have noted that the size isn't much wider than a CD/DVD.
You can estimate the size (height/width) based on that and it will certainly take up a lot less volume than the standard boxes MS are using now. - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34Err... Microsoft? I'm sure that's who makes Mac Office.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32Just like people get excited over smoke effects and ipod covers!
- maverick808, on 10/12/2007, -14/+37Yes, because it's far more exciting than Vista itself.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25dawgma, don't tell me apple started plastic packaging. This is not even the case style apple did, looks like its a bendable cover just like a DVD case..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25Yes!

Larger pic, but man that is nice - Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16You know whats worse than a bunch of people drooling over packaging that will sit on the shelf once the software is installed - never to be seen again?
Whats worse is ***** like you who come in to argue that the packaging they are drooling over isn't as good as the packaging of another product.
Go away. - liquidizer, on 10/12/2007, -18/+31Seriously. Are you people getting excited about an empty box?
- Markus123, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Well done, you a clever little genius.
If you hate "micro-ass" so much, why do you use their products? - mojojojo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I will provide packaging to all pirates that are willing to pay for it. lol
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16As opposed to what, Mac zealots getting excited by a mouse or the opening of an Apple product ?
This is NOTHING compared to the amount of rubbish we see about Apple on here. - netdroid9, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Sometimes the simplest effects are best, badtz.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"please dont use the word "sexy" to portray a product unless you intend to have sex with it"
I've been screwed by Windows many times, does that count? ;) - ZekeSulastin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8However, if we used the same packaging as we did back in the really old days, software would still be sold in ginormous binders with hundreds of pages of documentation and ...
Wait, maybe that wouldn't be such a bad thing ... - badtz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13.... and Apple sells you the Server Version with UNLIMITED client licenses.
- ctour95, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Too many versions, they need to sell one version - call it Windows Vista.
129.99 for the upgrade
299.99 for the full version
Why punish your customers with overpriced crippled versions like Home Basic?
Apple has one operating system, they sell you the top of the line version for 129.99, Microsoft should do the same. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I'm a photoshop semi-pro. That isn't photoshop 101, believe me. That's some quality work. I'm betting badtz is one of those idiots who just layers effects on top of eachother until he creates something vaguely paletable. It takes some real skill to know which tools to use and how, and, whatever package MS has used to create this box cover, they've done it right.
- jono1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9That crazy icon for the welcome center in Vista finally makes sense...
(seen here http://www.flickr.com/photos/41218255@N00/284702273/ next to "What's new in Windows Vista") - joe90210, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7NEW PICTURE OF BOX OPENING!!!!
http://static.flickr.com/103/284470279_ccd666e824.jpg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9@dawgma, what have you been smoking lately???
- GameCat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Honestly I thought this was going to be about MSFT having their own version of RPM of DPKG. Instead its a bunch of boxes for transporting DVD disks.
What are they going to use next century? The internet? - jvicinanza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Never judge a book by its cover.. especially when the contents of the book were written by Microsoft.
- warmcat, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12hey... wait a minute, get your hands out of my wallet!!! I'll -- OOOH SHINY!!!!
- greatcaffeine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7And it's very clear which version you need. Microsoft tries to add in too many worthless options, and it's annoying.
- BitSlash, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@hackmyballs
because for some of us, hating Microsoft went out of style after we left 8th grade. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I pirated my Ford Pickup.
Took an age to download, then I had to download it again coz the color was wrong! - kirupa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7The packaging looks really nice! You can see the full previews of the packages here: http://windowsvistablog.com/photos/default.aspx
- tadunne, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11I hate to turn this into an M$ vs Apple thing, but M$ do have it all wrong. They should be embracing more minimal packaging to save on shipping and environmental costs.
Apple have been gradually trimming down their boxes for a while now. The new nano box is barely bigger than the nano it's self and the Macbook packaging is stupidly small compared to the ibooks box. Shame greenpeace don't give them any brownie points for that..
M$ should give users the option to buy Vista online and burn it to DVD, now that would be forward thinking! No packaging! and Vista will be available from day one with no delay in production and shipping! - shortcircuit13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Too bad the old iPod packaging was cardboard, and thus easily biodegradable, whereas the new ones are plastic, which easily takes 50-200 years to biodegrade.
Yep, they're environment-friendly and all that jazz.
I personally like the packaging better because it's smaller and shows off the product itself, but it's laughable that anyone would think it's better for the environment.
The Macbook packaging, though, I give kudos for. Those packages are pretty slick. - shadownight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is definitely a big improvement! I like how everything is clean elegant (except for the MS logo, which looks really outdated). It looks like they learned from their "Microsoft iPod Packaging" video (which came from MS, BTW).
- autoy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Seems they learned some lessons from the Office:mac package. Still, I like the mac packing better not because of the logo but because of the box itself (you won't know till you go to a store and grab it).
- jono1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6...and we're supposed to take your word on this, cpbrown?
- kotatsu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Microsoft have finally employed some decent designers. 360 looks nice, Vista looks nice, Zune looks nice, and now even MS packaging looks nice.
And I know none of us use it, but even IE7 looks pretty decent now. - JonForTheWin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'd care but torrents don't come with shiny boxes. It's alright though. I have friends who well sell me the box for a couple of dollars.
- jayc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4After coughing up a lung to pay for it, you're going to be looking pretty sick too.
- jono1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"Well, that settles it, digg is off the rss reader."
Wow, someone else knows how I feel when I see stories about Steve Jobs taking a crap making it to the front page at least twice a day. - ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"@dawgma, what have you been smoking lately???"
Steve Job's Reality Distortion Field and lots of it where Apple "invented everything" even though crystal clear cases like that for the new iPod Nano have been around for the cosmetics, watch, and other industries for decades. How about MagSafe being "invented by Apple" even though the technology was present on some other technologies like Toasters, electronic Japanese Rice Cookers, Asian water boilers for over 30 years?
Few people invent anything, they just apply different technologies elsewhere. - CDNPiper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wow... NOW it's worth the inflated price.
For a second there I thought it was a rip off. Whew. - BevansDesign, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Integrity? Internet? Are you using the same internet that the rest of us are?
- cyberrigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I find it pitiful that Microsoft is hyping a box.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Nice packaging, but worth remembering, MS, that packaging does not a great product make.
Make it work! - badtz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7that's true! Has anyone seen the new Macbook Pro's packaging, incredibly small! And the iPod casings have definitely shrunk over time.
- miker71, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Looks like it was designed by a committee adhering to buzzwords and trends. It's neither bold and simple, nor uncluttered. There's no visual reference to what the software actually is (I thought the SuSE green package was for Office until I read the label).
If the best differentiator Microsoft can come up with is a curved sheard corner then that is truly truly sad.
Why can I see the word "Microsoft" 3 times from a single angle? Twice on the front face? It this really Microsoft Microsoft Windows Vista, et al?
C-
Must try harder. - vincenzo7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Will Vista Ultimate Edition come in a special edition foil case? By the way, i support MS, but honestly, why even try to pretend that everyone doesn't just want the ultimate edition. Counterproductivity is not a virtue by way of crappy marketing.
