- j3one, on 12/07/2007, -2/+73Nice, one step closer! This is great software, and I love it that this is no longer just for linux. No doubts that open source software like this should be cross platform. Kudos and thanks guys.
- nhnFreespirit, on 12/07/2007, -2/+53Quite contrary, it is my strong belief that having the same applications available on both platforms actually, in the long run, makes the switch to a free operating system much easier. When people realize that all the applications they use every day are available on linux as well as on windows, switching becomes less of a problem.
The point is, most people do not "use" an operating system ( or even know/care what is is for that matter ), they use a collection of applications. So the more applications we make available on both Windows and alternate platform, the more Windows looses its main advantage which is the fear users have of having to learn to use completely different applications for all their everyday tasks. And even for users who don't care about operating systems, price does make a difference if they can save a bunch of money by not buying Windows and still keep using all the same applications. - WiseElben, on 12/07/2007, -3/+410 playing ability -> 100% playing ability isn't a 100% increasing in audio playing, it is an infinite% increase.
- waterdrop, on 12/07/2007, -6/+39I love using Amarok in Ubuntu Linux and always hoped they would make it for Windows since I tend to use Windows more often. Amarok is better than iTunes, Zune software, and WMP11 (I use all 4 quite often since I own a iPod, a Zune, and I tend to use WMP11 for videos in windows and Amarok for music in linux). I can't wait till the final build comes out (or at least a working stable Beta).
- mlp101316, on 12/07/2007, -2/+34Great screenshot... you can really see all that sound.
- KungFuJesus, on 12/07/2007, -1/+23It's hard to explain. You just have to try amarok to understand how awesome it is
- blapierre, on 12/07/2007, -5/+26100% of 0 is still 0. Maybe come up with a better headline next time.
- neomis, on 12/07/2007, -0/+17I like the fact that it auto syncs with last.fm and that it supports a remote mysql database so that one server in my house serves the same music to every other computer.
- Kitsun, on 12/07/2007, -1/+16The way mac users go on about iTunes you would think they will be happy with what they have.
On a side note its already possible to run Amarok1 on mac. - masterc, on 12/07/2007, -0/+14If "hurrrrr" is Neanderthal for "I'm gonna get buried for using a joke that has run its course", then you got it right.
- edzilla, on 12/07/2007, -0/+14Because winamp doesn't look out of place on the gnome desktop??
- lowerlogic, on 12/07/2007, -4/+18Barely a media player? What the ***** are you smoking?
- killthemoles, on 12/07/2007, -9/+23Amarok is one of the reasons I switched to linux. Even when it works well on windows, i still wont be going back to it, though its definitly nice to have.
- dcbrown07, on 12/07/2007, -12/+25Windows doesn't deserve such a good player
- eean, on 12/07/2007, -0/+13I'm an Amarok developer and consider VideoLAN to not be a competitor at all really, if anything more of a sister project. At the Google Mentors conference an Amarok dev was helping them out some on their new Qt interface, work together on a DBus interface and we look to them as an example of successful crossplatform project. They've been on 3 platforms for /years/, we hope to do as well.
- SpoonThe, on 12/07/2007, -5/+16you know, 0 + 100% is still 0.
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -7/+18Windows already have decent players like Winamp and foobar2k. Is there any incentive to use Amarok? What does it do better?
- mreed, on 12/07/2007, -2/+13Yes.. thank you. I was hoping this bothered someone else too. A 100% increase means the audio playing was doubled, not increased from zero.
- kwilliam, on 12/07/2007, -2/+13Does Winamp or foobar 2000 automatically show lyrics? Fetch album art? Show the Wikipedia entry for the artist? Amarok does. Plus, it is simply a great music library organizer. The closest thing to it in Windows that I've seen is MediaMonkey.
- Disillusion, on 12/07/2007, -1/+12Amarok is awesome. This article is a bit of a false alarm though. I got all excited, then there is nothing to download... :(
- alexforcefive, on 12/07/2007, -1/+11you've... never used amarok, have you?
- erkokite, on 12/07/2007, -0/+10Almost everything. Amarok is one of desktop Linux's few killer apps. The search feature is extremely fast, it plays almost every format under the sun, and has excellent album organizational stuff.
- john2kx, on 12/07/2007, -1/+10winamp = aol
- ZPWeeks, on 12/07/2007, -0/+9Not *quite*. It'd be more accurate to say that WMP is a DirectShow frontend, as will be Amarok. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see it take a VLC-like approach and support other backend engines, just like the linux versions of Amarok that let you choose your audio backend (XINE? FFMPEG? DirectShow?)
You probably hate WMP's interface than you hate DirectShow.
The great thing about Amarok isn't the technical backend, it's the interface and options that it presents to the user. Many other players approach the media organization thing as "Here's how we think you should organize your music, now learn it!" (iTunes comes to mind, even though it's my player of choice). Amarok lets you take more control.
And Flac compatibility is more of an issue with what DirectShow plugins you have at the time you install the player. Your argument is kinda like whining that Windows only comes with Internet Explorer out of the box, even though you can have Firefox/Opera/Safari installed within 2 minutes if you really want it. If you're too lazy to do that, you're probably not tech-savvy to know what FLAC is in the first place. And if you need it, it's nice and easy to do. - KungFuJesus, on 12/07/2007, -1/+10I prefer amarok over every other media player that i have used
- john2kx, on 12/07/2007, -1/+9SpoonThe is correct.. There is no non-zero value.. 100% more means 100% of the original value, which is 0. So 100% more than 0 is 0.
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 12/07/2007, -0/+8I'm not personally a fan of amarok, but what *is* objective in this case? People tend to have such different tastes in music players, and in what they need their music players to do that I can't see why the GP's opinion isn't valid.
I always get antsy when someone "backs up" their opinion with things like "Any objective observer..." - WhereAmI, on 12/07/2007, -1/+9"is one of the reasons"
Meaning there was more than just Amarok.
It has a wolf howling as its icon. Its already good to me. - erkokite, on 12/07/2007, -3/+10Amarok2 > Chuck Norris
- spiffytech, on 12/07/2007, -1/+8Amarok is one of the few jukeboxes that focuses on the playlist rather than the library, which is exactly what I need. It also has a lot of small touches, such as the "queue this track" option to override Random, or the "stop playing after track" option.
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 12/07/2007, -0/+7IIRC, WinAmp has had built-in radio for a long time now.
- ftcram, on 12/07/2007, -0/+7Don"t forget the Magnatune.com interface that is built-in and the similar artist feature with Last,fm support. Oh and BTW I downloaded an update for Amarok (with Synaptic under Unbuntu) and it installed while Amarok was playing with only a minor hickup in the sound. Try that with windoze..
- KungFuJesus, on 12/07/2007, -2/+8In my experience, none do it as gracefully as amarok. It's not just the features, it's the feel of the amarok that makes it special IMO
- alexforcefive, on 12/07/2007, -0/+6Why not? What do you use? Please note I am not being angry or confrontational. You don't have to be either.
- WhereAmI, on 12/07/2007, -0/+6I've been using it for the past few months since I installed KDE. Love it.
- kurtergad87, on 12/07/2007, -0/+50 + 100 % = 0 + 100 / 100 = 0 + 1 = 1
What you meant was 0 * 100 % = 0 - digerati1338, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5At this point, you are kind of screwed for getting it if you don't know how to compile it. It wouldn't be as simple as an executable download because of all its dependencies. I could put up a binary, but that'd hardly get you any closer. Click on the wiki link on the article to try to figure it out yourself.
- ArthurSucks, on 12/07/2007, -1/+6But it uses the directshow decoders. Couldn't use VLC? It's basically a WMP frontend? That means that Flac wont work out of the box? No thank you.
- worthone, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4No, but we do.
- rockmanac, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4Yay! I like Amarok and pretty much only use that on Linux. I'll be excited when I can replace iTunes on Windows with something good.
- ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -1/+5Whatever gets the job done fastest. Typically, point and click menus.
- Kitsun, on 12/07/2007, -2/+5Amarok has the perfect blend of speed and functionality, even with large collections, I'm glad that its coming to Windows, now I can ditch my 2nd PC I use for Amarok when playing games.
- renegadeafk, on 12/07/2007, -1/+4foobar is such a waste of ***** time, half the plugins don't even work very well, and I don't want to spend all day customizing a ***** media player.
- Captj, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3Not infinite, undefined.
- zwaldowski, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3And, you know, all the other awesome Linux stuff.
- webcrumb, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3You could install QT4-config (or similar) and change the KDE theme colours.
- thefinger, on 12/07/2007, -1/+4You don't deserve a computer, for a dumbass comment like that.
- Kitsun, on 12/07/2007, -3/+6Amarok2 > (foobar2000 + amarok + winamp)
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3Some people would offer their eternal souls for a piece of software as good as Amarok (I know I would). Only having to switch operating systems to get to use it is a no-brainer.
- zwaldowski, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3@BuhSnarf: That probably has a LOT to do with KDE's widget backend. As always, that is customizeable.
