- Kink, on 10/12/2007, -4/+74They're just names...why is this site called Digg? Why not HorseTesticles.com?
- pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -7/+67I suppose when your software is something many pirates use primarily to run pirated software you may as well make it free. They're going to end up getting it free whether you like it or not.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+46Maybe horsetesticles was taken.
- Quinton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+44
http://www.free-downloads.net/programs/Alcohol_52__Free_Edition
It has now been released. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+37Maybe I drink too much, but to me, this is too funny. Alcohol is now free, as in beer, and is 52%!
- crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30Wait, so he's mad because they are releasing something for free and want to tell everyone about it?
What an idiot. - BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22http://www.horsetesticles.com
It is taken lol, its some strange persons blog. - neoform, on 10/12/2007, -13/+29What is up with those ridiculous names? 120% ? 52% ?
- Quinton, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Alcohol Software is not a pirate software.
If you think of any of the top businesses around the world they are probably running our software not to mention the 1000s of Schools, Colleges, Universities throughout the world.
To those who think I posted this here to spam, I can say that was not the case.
Digg is the perfect place to spread word quickly "granted" but 100s of thousands of our own users whos 30 day trial runs out or clicks the button inside the software also visits the exact same landing page link as this original post. - BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16@nullmind
Its a level playing ground man, if you don't like it don't digg it. - Hardcase, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Spyware FTW!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@myself
Looks like I spoke too soon. Alcohol 52% FE contains their own "Alcohol Toolbar". This crap is no better than Daemon tools. EVIL BASTARDS! - Tenzin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Just remember to un-install Alcohol Toolbar right after the install.
- Dempf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Or just click DO NOT INSTALL FRICKIN SPYWARE when it asks you.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12yeh, and now daemon tools comes bundled with spyware...
I know they have the option to leave it out, but just the fact that they would try something that sleazy. - socokoolaid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The Digg says freeware...the site says 30 day free trial, wich is shareware in my book....inaccurate....
- OsiVert, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Is there any big differences between Alcohol and Daemon tools? Daemon tools has always been free.....is there more benefit to Alcohol? The software, not the drink.
- pumacub, on 10/12/2007, -13/+21So true, so true.
On a side note, am I the only one who thinks having a % sign in your name is incredibly lame? - Quinton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Main site has now included the link.
The correct download link was in the first comment.
The toolbar that is included in this free version allows you to quickly search what protections are used on media which then allows you to quickly set up the software.
It is 100% spyware/adware free and can easily be uninstalled at any time. - JohntB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Or just uncheck the option to install the toolbar in the installer. It's sneaky if you don't know about it, but if you do know about it, it's easy to avoid. No need to use older versions.
- bogdon6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Alcohol can be used for privacy, but it is really useful for legitimate purposes. I like to keep images of games I own on my computer instead of having to find a CD when I want to play the game. Alcohol makes that really easy.
- lithuin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@jmcantrell
OK... in regards to Daemon Tools (meant to post under OP):
First, it's not spyware; it's adware. I don't like adware myself, but all you have to do is uncheck the checkbox. They are very clear about that.
Second, it's a way for them to make money legitimately in order to continue supporting a free and useful program.
I don't get what the big deal is with this. They are not sneaking it on to your computer, you don't have to take it, and even if you do, it's fairly benign software. It seems like a non-issue to me... - Quinton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7http://www.free-downloads.net/programs/Alcohol_52__Free_Edition
This is not a 30 day trial it is Totally Free. - MrCobaltBlue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Good story
+HorseTesticles - JJR2527, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I use Daemon Tools for all physical disc emulation purposes, it is probably my favorite piece of software of all time. I am surprised more people don't know about it. I have an old version that I never updated so maybe it's changed.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DAEMON_Tools
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/daemon_tools.cfm - Hardcase, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Unlike Daemon Tools, Alcohol appears to be unencumbered by spyware.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Quinton may (or may not) be an employee of Alcohol, but we have to commend him for participating in the discussion. Most diggvertisers don't go that far.
- raitchison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm a Alcohol 120% user, I use it to make images of all my CDs so my kids don't have to handle them & risk scratching them.
I have been using Daemon Tools on the kids PC to mount the images so they can play their games though now I'll check out the Alcohol 52% as an alternative.
I always thought it was a bit off to charge for the 52% since it's pretty useless without the 120% - sfty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Heh, they really posted it to digg. They could have put a press release on their page like normal companies, but no... :)
- raitchison, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I hear what your saying, but the adware in Daemon Tools is optional and is also disclosed.
- raitchison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Eh it wasn't buried in the EULA it was posted prominently on the download page (http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php?mode=ViewCategory&catid=5) as well as explained during the install.
- curtking, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8For those of us who paid for 52%, will there be a free upgrade to 120%?
- jafojsharp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I have to completely agree with you on the Daemon Tools. Difference is I can easily control Daemon from the system tray vs. Alcohol and its lame GUI interface.
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Mounting the disc is only half of it. Emulating proprietary copy protection mechanisms is the other half.
- xilaen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I'm not sure but i have heard from people that there is some sort of trace spyware/adware/malware whateverware involved in Daemon Tools, just something to think of.
- solidfusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have used Virutual Clone Drive from Slysoft for this application. No spyware, and simple to use. http://www.slysoft.com/en/download.html
From their site:
Probably the best virtual drive software, Virtual CloneDrive allows you to enjoy the freedom of a virtual drive and is completely free. - thepurplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5There is the "Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel for Windows XP" available here:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/7/b/6/7b6abd84-7841-4978-96f5-bd58df02efa2/winxpvirtualcdcontrolpanel_21.exe - TheThirdWheel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Good point, hard market to make money off of. I have to admit it's a solid program that I'll start using since it's free. Saves the time and money of burning a DVD.
- slowspin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5FYI - You can get the old version of Daemon Tools without the spyware from www.oldversion.com - for us old-schoolers.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4DT used to accept Paypal donations as their primary source of income (maybe they still do) but people obviously weren't contributing enough. You'd think their primary audience wasn't accustomed to paying for software or something.
- stapler123, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Is it me or does this try to install a toolbar of some sort that does "something" with searching.
Maybe I'm being paranoid but I quit the installer after reading the eula. It seems something like software I don't want, is a form of not being totally free. - SuperCow1127, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@generalleoff
You got dugg down for being a lightweight. - random42, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Yes, I believe the difference is that 120 can burn media and 52 can only emulate.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3From what I've seen, ring zero apps don't work at all in Vista. The HAL is too different from XP to control the OS on such a low level with legacy software.
I'm sure Alcohol and Daemon Tools are hard at work on a solution.
In the mean time, I found a partial fix for ISO files. Use WinRAR to extract the ISO to a folder, share the folder, and then map that folder to a network drive. Most software assumes it's a CD and it works just fine. I don't know if this beats copy protection but at least autoplay works. - jaadfoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For movies I've been using VLC for quite some time. It plays movies (and probably cds) directly from an iso image. This is great to use alongside DVDshrink.
- hasbeen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If you want to use daemon tools, use version 347 or earlier. It's before they introduced the spyware junk, from what I hear.
- raitchison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Because they have to make a living. There are free drive imaging progrgam out there but none of the free ones (that I've found) are able to image most copy protected discs.
- BangoSkank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have been using A52% for about 3 years, and it rocks
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree. This is a very good package.
Also, there's MagicDisc. Here's the freeware version...
http://www.magiciso.com/download.htm - Hellfire51, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I haven't used Alcohol 120% or 52% in years, anyone know how this freeware version compares to the free Daemon Tools for emulation?
