- 1jaxstate1, on 01/07/2009, -7/+65Your God Steve Jobs says you don't need flash. Now look at the blue cube in your Safari browser and be happy!
- Pardis, on 01/08/2009, -8/+57you will never see flash on the iPhone, flash support would lead to people making an app in flash then putting it on a website. Reducing the money Apple makes from apps, it would also lead to unauthorized apps getting ran.
- Plasmatica, on 01/08/2009, -1/+37This article reveals nothing new.
- mongo22, on 01/07/2009, -6/+39Love the title. I have the Star Wars theme song in my head as I read the title.
- elfprince13, on 01/08/2009, -14/+44wait, i'm confused....are there really people developing with Silverlight? the only place i've seen using it is the microsoft website.....
- Pardis, on 01/08/2009, -2/+31aahhh getting dugg down by apple zealots that cant handle the truth.

Adam Dann, CEO of Nullriver, agrees that Flash would take away some of Apple's control. Apple eventually banned Nullriver's application NetShare because it violated AT&T Terms of Service agreement by turning the iPhone into a wireless modem for tethering. If Apple introduced Flash to iPhone, it's possible Nullriver could code a Flash version of NetShare, repeating that violation, Dann said.
just an example why you will not see flash - BoneStamp, on 01/08/2009, -3/+30If Apple could force you to buy flash applications through the app store then Yes. Since they can't, then No... we won't see Flash on the iPhone or iPod touch. Ever. Instead, developers will make the same applications using the iPhone dev kit and then apple can take 30% of the sale price.
- rocketman42, on 01/08/2009, -3/+28I was wondering how this had 150 diggs, then I saw EMFK had dugg 78 articles in the last 30 minutes. I'm sure his 'friends' returned the favor by digging junk like this.
- compulsive1, on 01/07/2009, -9/+30Does this mean we get Flash for iPod touch and iPhone soon?
- isntreal, on 01/08/2009, -0/+20Netflix uses it for instant watch now.
- ileftfark, on 01/07/2009, -11/+30Farthest thing from an MSFT fanboy as you'll find, but I'm actually pretty impressed with Silverlight so far. The Olympics online looked nice, and it seemed to use less resources than the Flashplayer. Moonlight is still a little buggy, but it works very well on the Windows platform. I guess really what will make or break it marketing-wise is if it's easy to develop for, and if it's open enough for new developments.
- Khast, on 01/08/2009, -0/+19Flash is used just about everywhere. Mostly in annoying advertisements....Usually, the more obnoxious the ad, the better the chance it is using Flash.
- jeremymccurdy, on 01/08/2009, -2/+19Maybe Adobe will release devkits of Flash for a version newer than 7. Then maybe Flash wouldn't suck on the Wii and any other platform that Adobe doesn't specifically support.
But really, I've never seen Silverlight apps outside of Microsoft run sites. It'd be pretty hard for Microsoft to topple Adobe when flash is so easy to work in a kid can develop stuff in it. - Fragarach87, on 01/08/2009, -0/+17Haha flash on the iPhone is like Duke Nukem Forever. Just when you think its never going to come out they tell you a little more, but its still never going to see the light of day.
- dn11, on 01/08/2009, -0/+161) Motley Fool is a financial site
2) huh...? - Dumbledorito, on 01/08/2009, -1/+13"Flash" became dominant through piracy. Places like "Newgrounds" wouldn't have made the app so ubiquitous if it hadn't been for kids being able to get the app illegally (call it "dominating the market via tolerated IP abuse").
- jeremymccurdy, on 01/08/2009, -1/+12Despite your "roar I hate pirates" tone, you're probably right. It probably also doesn't hurt that it's incredibly easy to use and work with, so those "kids" could actually make stuff with it.
- FKnight, on 01/08/2009, -2/+13You have to admit -- it's nice to see Microsoft actually using their development platform.
- alman, on 01/08/2009, -0/+10The latest firmware for the PS3 included Flash 9
- diggdiggerid, on 01/08/2009, -2/+12It will always be Macromedia Flash in my heart <3 I remember downloading the Flash 4 trial overnight using a download manager on my 56k, deleting it, and repeating every so often. :')
- beatrixkiddo, on 01/08/2009, -0/+10I'm a .NET developer, and I must say Silverlight's first version was kind of pathetic. No user controls, wow. I don't know about Flash, but Flex is extremely easy to pick up on. Don't even get me started on how awesome Adobe's open source community is. If you're doing rich internet applications, you should really check out Flex.
- tama00, on 01/08/2009, -11/+20***** silverlight.
- darklights, on 01/08/2009, -1/+10Why? In the grand scheme of multimedia capable devices, the iPhone / iPod is such a small player.
- baronvonrolo, on 01/08/2009, -5/+14No mention of Adobe Air?
- BoneStamp, on 01/08/2009, -1/+10http://digg.com/linux_unix/64_Bit_Linux_Adobe_Flas ...
- peaceninja, on 01/08/2009, -0/+9ive seen a couple of radio stations use it for streaming their stations live
- Jamiekin, on 01/08/2009, -1/+10I remember it as futuresplash (before Macromedia bought it).
I feel old :( - twiztidsinz, on 01/08/2009, -0/+9Couldn't have been built using flash just because to view the page you'd need to have.. you know.. SILVERLIGHT?
What good is advertising a product to people using the product? - Blandyman, on 01/08/2009, -1/+9Well, now I know who not to recommend when friends need repairs...
When you're providing a public service, you're job is to help the customer. This could be blocking the installation of spyware, adware, malware, viruses, trojans, etc., etc. Your morals and personal beliefs have no place in a business like that.
How do you think people would like it, if I (say I were a Christian) repaired their systems and made their backgrounds The Last Supper just because I love God and Jesus Christ? - kibiz0r, on 01/08/2009, -2/+10I gave it a shot. Silverlight's API is great for multimedia, but sucks for games.
Overall, though, C# > ActionScript. - Yazilliclick, on 01/08/2009, -2/+9So now we're in favor of a single company monopolizing an area? Colour me confused :(
- Myztry, on 01/08/2009, -0/+7By sticking Silverlight in Windows Update (despite it not being an update), and then constantly presenting it as a new update while ignoring the fact the user selected not to show the addition again.
- Yazilliclick, on 01/08/2009, -2/+8By leveraging your advantages in the market. Namely Microsoft counting on it's .NET developers to easily pick up and use Silverlight as opposed to learning something completely different such as Flash and actionscript. And there are a LOT of .NET developers out there now.
- fejorca, on 01/08/2009, -2/+8What a crappy article, I tought it was gonna talk about pros and cons of silverlight vs. flash instead it was an article about how adobe is moving flash to other platforms that adobe announces YEARS AGO! buried for lame.
- woofers07, on 01/08/2009, -6/+12Sorry, but Flash has already taken way too much of the market for silverlight to make any noise. How many of you have the silverlight pluggin installed on your browser? Not to mention there's a lot more of a demand for Flash developers than Silverlight, how many designers and developers are willing to spend the hours learning another program and language?
- insidein, on 01/08/2009, -2/+8Well you my friend are just wrong! Amazing that you're still in business.
- wedges, on 01/08/2009, -5/+11Silverlight will NEVER take the crown away from Flash. Firefox is a much better product, and it still can't take the edge from internet exploder. so when you take a product that is only marginally better how can you expect it to dominate?
- rikwakefield, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6ala IE7?
- Drizzit, on 01/08/2009, -1/+7Flash has already won. All the porn sites stream using flash if they dont allow downloads of the video files themselves.
- Jamminn, on 01/08/2009, -2/+8Flex?
- FKnight, on 01/08/2009, -4/+9Can you PLEASE come up with a new way to bash people who don't think Microsoft is Satan? This one is ***** OLD.
- BoneStamp, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5Why do you have to be connected to the internet to use flash app? I have lots of flash games saved on my computer for offline use. With AIR, there are lots of useful offline applications (particularly flex based).
Don't get me wrong, I hope flash is coming to the iPhone... I could make money on it tomorrow... I just don't think it's happening anytime soon. - shaka999, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5By throwing money at large sites to use Silverlight instead of Flash?
- ispshadow, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6I've seen BoneStamp's argument on Digg more than once about the homepage built in Flash and I think you are the FIRST person to point that out.
- GhostFreeman, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6http://dearadobe.com
- PatrickBrown, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6Microsoft will allow for a crippled and out-dated version of Silverlight (such as moonlight) to exist for other platforms so long as it is a major version or two behind what they offer on Windows (just like they do for .NET).
Flash used to be like this until recently, when adobe started releasing Flash on Windows/Mac/Linux simultaneously. - SinNickel, on 01/08/2009, -5/+10Developing for Silverlight is way, Way, WAY better than developing for Flash...as more devs realize this, impetus will grow and overtake Flash, in a manner similar to how .Net has overtaken Java. Business apps will be a key driver (doing more than playing video for projects that have funding and make money) - which will lead to better tools and larger mindshare. Adobe can try - but they'll need to make some staggering breakthroughs in technology (ActionScript is ***** and Adobe Air is a joke compared to .Net) if they are to have any chance.
Digg me down, but in five years, folks will look upon Flash like they do RealPlayer today - eedok, on 01/08/2009, -2/+7Actionscript and C# are not only both scripting languages they are also programming languages, being scripting languages are subset of programming languages, making the above argument make no sense.
- DemDude, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6And none of it has anything to do with flash or silverlight.
They're for videoplayback, games and ads. The things that are put behind websites (I suppose you mean Application servers, Java applets, PHP interpreters, databases, etc.) don't have anything to do with either of those apps. - anonydigg, on 01/08/2009, -3/+8Well if that's the case then there are cons to it too. Microsoft will nail the coffin shut for the adoption of any other platform if they want to. Would you even consider running another operating system or buy a net browsing device if it doesn't play online videos or omits a large sections of the web?
I'm not comfortable giving MS any more power than it already has over the future of the internet and internet enabled devices. I will boycott Silverlight based on principle. Unless they open source it or some how make an assurance that other people can make alternative implementations for ever.
I know Adobe already has that control, but they don't compete with platform developers or device makers at the moment which makes it easier to negotiate with them. -
