- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37You do realise that Photoshop wasn't made for 12 year olds to make forum sigs.
- thelostemperor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27"Aperture doesn't compete with Photoshop..."
No, it competes with Adobe Lightroom, OBVIOUSLY. - johnsatre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27#1 by far is the fact that it's universal. photoshop runs a million times better and faster on intel macs now.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26^ you're a racist!
- Megan007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I think this recap is immensely helpful, especially for those of us who use photoshop all the time, but don't have an understanding of how the new features fit in.
- morouxshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Considering it says in their site that the shipping will be late April, no, no torrents yet. Still Its incredibly naive that you believe that they expect individuals to pay that money.
Adobe makes most of their money from companies and volume licensing. Sure you got that copy for free over the internetz because youre such a 1337 hax0r. But when you're looking for a design job and they ask you what software you know how to use, you wont say Jasc Software's Paint Shop Pro, you'll say Photoshop. That makes them the industry leader.
I do freelance web design work for a couple of companies (apart from my day job) and between them I already negotiated my upgrade to the new Master Edition. It's not that bad, its tax deductible and if you play your cards right your bosses understand how if they help you out with the cost, they might get a better product in the end. :)
-> Trolls, I do understand some individuals will pay for the software. I am just pointing out why Adobe is where they are and how for a company that is not that much money. - chongli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Duplicating the layer will not accomplish this for you.
If you apply 20 different filters and duplicate the layer each time, try this:
Go back and re-do the very first filter you applied to change some settings. Will all of the layers you made after it be updated? No.
Smart Filters does this. You cannot get this functionality by duplicating layers. - altjeringa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14i'd dare say the best feature of CS3 is the interface changes. bringing it out of the early 90's was a good move. screen real estate tastes like happiness.
on the other hand that article stinks like another article created specifically to get dugg. empty waste of a page. - 5seasonz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Absolutely love the smart filters... being able to experiment to your heart's content with effects without having to redo them and retrace your steps... excellent. Great post thanks
- rcran, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17I love the aperture ad down at the bottom.
- allanpat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13also, camera raw support for JPG is a huge new tool in CS3
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12really? never? you'll never use non-destructive filters? because if you use any filter in cs3 you'll be using one of those features.
also, who gives a ***** what you will or won't do. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Lets set sail for Monkey Island :3

- betterth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What a terrible description!
Pirates did not steal! They plundered! They did not rape, they plundered flesh! They did not kill...awww who am I kidding, pirates killed, often, efficiently and usually for no apparent reason. - nogami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's a shame that Adobe didn't license Autostitch from UBC, it's far and away the best stitching software I've used.
http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~mbrown/autostitch/autostitch.html - stuma9000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Umm, you're thinking of Adjustment layers - they didn't have them for FILTERS.
- bbhh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yeah, i always just duplicate the layer as i go. it's usually good enough for me to just have 1 back up of the original photo. but yeah, this is way better, and i've been waiting for this forever.
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4image adjustments and filters are two completely separate things. using an adjustment layer does nothing for me when i'm using gaussian blur or something.

The point is that for Graphic Designers and Web Designers Adobe is not over charging. We make money every day using this software. Certainly enough to pay for the software that makes it all possible. Like I said if you don't NEED Photoshop or whatever get Elements, anyone should be able to afford that. And no they don't just expect to make money from big companies. There are a lot of Designers and Web Developers out there that make a lot of money with their own small businesses. If you are a student there's educational pricing that is very affordable.
Have you seen the price of Autodesk software? Maybe I just want to screw around with that but you know what I don't have the money to spend on that because I wouldn't make it back because that's not my field, but I don't expect them just to give it to me because I want to screw around.
There is Elements people. And the Standard version of Photoshop CS3 is only $649 which I think is around the same price as the other versions in the past were.
Designers make between $30 and $120 an hr. or more so tell me again why this is priced too high?
Those of you who want something for nothing bury me. LOL - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Note that the official name is "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom".
So in a way, it does compete.... - smb3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Some people make that much for a couple day's work, and like morouxshi said it's tax deductible, so why not support the company that's supported you.
- morouxshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i dont know about a million but CS3 beta universal was so much better than the CS2 through rosetta
- artisresistance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Vanishing Point with adjustable angle
"One of the big examples Adobe is pushing with this feature is to simulate 3D packaging and work on multiple planes at various angles in the same image. Like an open box for a new product, or even for experimenting with your final package art by seeing it in its real-world context."
nice. - codyodell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The only reason adobe is charging this much is because they know big companies will still buy the suite no matter what, this time around they just decided to charge an insane amount to make up for money they would otherwise be losing to pirated copies. Bottom line, the average joe doesn't have this kind of money to spend on 1's and 0's, theyre just asking for it. But it doesn't matter to them because theyre overcharging so much for the people who are actually buying it.
- ratz2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4For the whole suite!
If your not a working pro then you probalby don't need the whole suite.
Photoshop CS3 is $649 and Phtoshop CS3 Extended is $999.
And if that's way too much get Elements $149.
If thats too much then your just going to pirate anything and everything anyways and thanks for making software cost more! - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Photomerge in CS2 was terrible, I reserve judgement as to just how good CS3 is on that front...
The thing is, we have had a crop of truly excellent stiching applications come to market. Some are free and great (PTTools) some are just great but not quite as free (Calico) and some are damn expensive but also really impressive. Given the variety of really great tools we have, I'm not sure I can get excited about CS3 getting better at stiching unless they have some aspect unthought of in other products.
The idea of taking multiple images and automatically keeping the static elements seems rather nice though. - Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It sounds like the new PS CS3 files will not be backwards compatible, with the new Nondestructive Smart Filters. And I can see that becoming a very popular feature, so it's going to force everyone who exchanges .psd files to upgrade.
- ohnnyj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wish they would devote more to HDR.
- KoderOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Because that would be a huge improvement."
If you wouldn't use a mac you would have at least the app-background that covers the desktop ever since Photoshop 3. - JudgeDredd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Is it more user friendly? I have a legit. copy of CS2 gifted to me which always makes me feel like an idiot when I use it. Eventually I get the job done, but the program seems to have a very high learning curve. Yes, I know that only people that already know what they are doing should be using software that costs the same price as a new computer. I also know I will be dugg down for not being a PS expert.
- IceCreamMatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just tried that autostitch after reading your comment, and I have to say its 1000x better then CS2. I didn't even have to do anything to the image, where as I had spent a really long time in CS2 doing the same panorama. The autostitch one looked a lot better too. I suggest anyone who likes to stitch stuff to give this a shot.
- gmurran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The pricing off the suite is crazy in Europe. I don't support piracy at all if your using the software for client work. But piracey causes very little rise in software prices most people that use photoshop once every so often want its power but will never pay.
- h00j, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@willynilly
Or you could just use Step Backwards? - glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But this will hopefully apply to everything not just a limited set and doing it the CS2 way creates a lot of clutter.
- anonym41414, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1CS3 adds 32-bit-float support to the 8-bit and 16-bit support in CS2, and it has full support for OpenEXR. What more could you possibly need?
- Autoclave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1While it does give very good results, when I tried it in the beta I ran into memory problems. Photoshop crashed when I tried to run a stitch with around 25 - 8 mp shots. And on another I had to split a 20 shot 2 row stitch and run them as 2 separate groups then run it again to combine those 2 results. There are other programs like autopano pro that handle memory much better.
- ohnnyj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How about all filters available on 32-bit images and better tone mapping tools ala PhotoMatix.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Do you mean that they've reduced the number of idiotic floating palettes? Maybe unified the app within a single main frame, which takes the toolbars and so forth with it when you move it? And provides a background that covers up all the other apps or crap on your desktop?
Because that would be a huge improvement. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"It sounds like the new PS CS3 files will not be backwards compatible, with the new Nondestructive Smart Filters. And I can see that becoming a very popular feature, so it's going to force everyone who exchanges .psd files to upgrade."
Perhaps for modification purposes, but my biggest question is why wouldn't you upgrade? This is a feature that many of us have wanted for a while - and if a client of mine wanted to see what I was working on, turning it into a .jpeg is only a click away.
Anyone who uses photoshop will upgrade just for this. Talk about a time saver. - bossmanthe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...and of course the color change to the icons.
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that might have been a good one if it were still 2006.
- Oniony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bind Step Backward to Ctrl-Z as I have done and it'll do what you're expecting. I think this should be the default, the toggle behaviour makes new users think it doesn't even have multiple undo!
- DonCarcharo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm still waiting on release dates for the demos. Typically Adobe shows us some pre-release love with downloadable demos a week or two before the software hits the streets. This time around I haven't heard much yet, though if you watch some of the preview movies on their site they do mention "go download the demo" despite the fact that no such demos exist yet.
Hopefully they'll be releasing them shortly. My poor iMac needs a Rosetta vacation. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1NICE!!!
I just found Photoshop3 for free on the internet with crack!!!!
