- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1On my powerbook lightroom seems almost but not quite the same speed as aperture ( hacked to work on the powerbook ) but lightroom is still in beta and aperture wasn't made for the g4 so it isn't definitive. I like the aperture UI better but lightroom has better photoshop integration and allows you to keep your photos in multiple directories on multiple drives ( without messing with symbolic links ) and it will be cross platform. Overall I think that when lightroom is out of beta it will be a better choice than aperture.
- HackWithRamzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The reason the Mac version is finished first is because Objective-C / Cocoa makes for very good fast application development.

LOL! - SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is cool, now mac users have something to do while windows users are applying new security patches.
- qbix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Will it be free? I like Picasa for now and I hope they release a new and more powerful version soon.
- queraxus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doesn't beat Aperture.
- themuffinman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now I use windows but I like seeing things released elsewhere first.
- haylcron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love it, Windows users having to wait for a version...
- NoOneButMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thats a direct link to the beta, with about 100mb of sample content. (Total size of that is 111mb)
http://trials.macromedia.com/pub/esd/labs/lightroom/lightroom_b1_standalone.dmg is the beta without any sample content. it's 4.25mb in size.
Hope the links work. if not, then sign up. *shrugs* - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't see the Flash video under Linux. :(
FlashVersion < 8. : - mathew_bug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg for letting me know that a windows version is on the way.
Looking nice, by the way!
IvyMike: cross between Photoshop and Picasa? AND you read all the info there? Don't believe it. Anyway, Lightroom is an application for amateurs to professional photographers that need a program capable of dealing with all the heavy stuff (read: RAW imagery). This program is for photo treatment and organization, not editing. - mrapplegate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@IvyMike, it is an app to help with the digital photographer's workflow. You can view your images, work with your RAW files very quickly, and compare shots. It is a good program so far. I have been using it for a week now. You can print contact sheets or export a slide show either html or flash to a website. It is exciting because you do not need the latest Mac to use it, unlike Aperture. I have an iMac G5, 20 inch, and it is very fast. I could not use Aperture on my Mac since it is not one of the latest models with a decent video card. I will buy it when it comes out.
- IvyMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK, I read the marketing info, and read a lot of buzzwords, but...
What is it, exactly? It sound kind of like a cross between Photoshop and Picasa...is that it?
I'm a Windows user, so I can't try it for myself. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I find it hard to believe that these companies (Apple and Adobe) are targetting these programs at amatuer to pro customers, I mean jeez, £350 is a lot of money for a student.. and I feel bad pirating software, but I'm staying with open source for the moment.
I think the competition between these two will hopefully lower the prices so they can be aimed at a more prosumer market, those with a good digital SLR and need to organize better than iPhoto and picassa.
Don't get me wrong the new iPhoto 6 is great, but it's not aperture.. - wardriver20, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, That's pretty nice.
Downloading... - StanrickKubley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, the thing that keeps me from getting into iPhoto is the way it imports and creates its own library, and apparently Aperture works the same way (please correct me if I'm wrong). Plus, let's face it, Adobe has Photoshop, and I'm sure there's some Lightroom/Photoshop integration. Plus, and maybe this is just a personal issue for me, but I recently got burned BAD by Apple's Soundtrack Pro, which is a venture of theirs into new territory. The software is beta quality at best, and I got seriously screwed when I picked it for a project. So I guess I've got trust issues with Apple's new products. Bottom line: unless Lightroom is a steaming pile I'll be going that way for my photography.
- andrewvc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This kicks aperture's ass because:
It doesn't have a braindead single file storage system. already a plus. a method for importing pre-organized folder structures, another plus. The compare mode, which would make my dailyediting easier, another plus. The hidden panels that reasily reappear are a great idea. Dimming the UI is a great idea for evaluating color.
This looks like they looked over photogs shoulders while editing and made a shortcut for every common action. I'm not a fan of monopolies but Adobe just seems to make the best ***** a lot of the time. One thing I didn't see, and I may just have missed it, was curves. I NEED MY CURVES. - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lightroom looks really good.
I like the UI a lot. The features look great, too. - Bobd314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The video keeps like stopping at random points for me, maybe every 30 seconds or so. Could be just something stupid like my internet or whatever, but its making me mad. So, does anyone have another link to the video or a way I can download the flash file to my comp?
- NoOneButMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://trials.macromedia.com/pub/esd/labs/lightroom/lightroom_b1_samples.dmg
- chrisdelta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Have you read any reviews of the Release Version of Aperture? The BETA of Lightroom blows it away.
- natemc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0More like a competitor to CaptureOne which has been around and in use way longer than Aperature and is for XP/MacOS
Apple didn't invent everything kids!

So I'm the type of photographer who takes pictures and goes "That one looks good," so obviously it's addressing a need I don't have. But I still don't know exactly where I'm wrong.
Organizing = Picasa
RAW, Photo treatment = Isn't that part of what Photoshop does? (I guess that Photoshop's a lot more than that, that's probably what you had an issue with.)
I was trying to be lazy before, but now I've watched most of the video, and it still kind of seems like sort of a Picasa for professionals. I know, I know, it's pretty obvious it's not for MY workflow, so it's clear I don't need it. :)
"You can print contact sheets or export a slide show either html or flash to a website."
Even a rank amateur like me can understand that. Cool, thanks!
P.S. Since I didn't know exactly what "photo treatment" means, I did a search. My advice: avoid that, unless you were expecting photos labeled "Photo of the patient's deformity before treatment" and "after treatment". - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The interface isn't as nice as Aperture, but it's blazingly fast. Browses through 30mb RAW files like they were 20k JPGs.
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love it, Windows users having to wait for a version... ---- I'm glad you do, becuase usually its the other way around.
- GarrettC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks good, anxious to see a Windows build.
- stox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting....because it is only for OSX to begin with. I thought Adobe had adopted the policy of writing in Windows and back-porting to Mac. Could this be a reversal???
- flap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really like the program...very simple and easy to organize. Aperature costs to much $$$$ and is overly complex but adobes is really nice...thank god I have something to import my photos into other than iPhoto...eww.
- dpknc84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I love it, Windows users having to wait for a version"
Um... in this case it's as it should be. The direct competitor for Adobe in this case is a Mac product. - Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0adobe always markets for windows first, this is an exception
- nzeeshan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0what the hell .. only Mac version no Windows?
Hell with this dude .. if we wanted something for Mac we would have used Aperture ... why would one wanna have both i.e. Lightroom and Aperture?
Adobe is stupid to come out with a Mac version only ..
hell with them .. - tamzarian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I want a windows version. :(
