- jdstorer2, on 06/19/2009, -1/+4Huh? What's an Ad? (Firefox junkie)
- branndon, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3I need to increase my adsense earnings by about 100X to make a good living.... Write an article on how to do that next time please. :D
- Mavital, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3I'm still curious, has anyone here actually clicked on an ad on a website, and if so, did you ever end up purchasing something because of it?
I find myself ignoring ads. In fact, even if I were to be interested in one of the items advertised in an annoying flash ad, I'd never buy it out of principal.
Just curious if I'm the only one on digg who thinks internet advertising is a waste of money. - Wesside, on 06/19/2009, -0/+2Love how there's no title!
- jemka, on 06/19/2009, -0/+2GREAT! all these ads and no one to see them.
Hey smashing, how do I make a popular website? - EasternWind, on 06/19/2009, -0/+2cool resource site.
- inactive, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1Except adblock isn't making money when someone clicks that link, douchebag. adsense is the worst of the worst. It churns out millions of small time bloggers that just repeat other content to make money. They have no original content and nothing to offer the internet.
And I've been using google even before adsense was invented. - Wesside, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1Firefox and adblock plus actually.
- jemka, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1You're using chrome + adsweep. Adsweep is not compatible with the current version of chrome. Not sure if it will be either. Thank you.
- branndon, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1I'm willing to bet digg.com did some internet advertising when it first started.
- Wesside, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1Never had an issue with it for anything else. Except ads not showing up (and as such the ads posted into diggs stories)
- netneutrality, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1I disable AdBlock on sites I really like and fire random clicks at those ads, but no, I never found them useful. They're far too ubiquitous and spammy to seem valuable any more, and I know that if I do see something interesting, a web search would return ten or a hundred more sites just like it, and probably better than it.
Actually I didn't used to think I minded ads, and only installed AdBlock for the EasyPrivacy filter, but then I discovered how nice it was to be rid of them (animated ads, mainly). - jemka, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1@Wesside,
Strange behavior for FF + adblock plus. Might want to re-install the plugin or have a look at your rules. - innonano, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1Now you can change Adsense font!
- strictnein, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1The last ad I've clicked on and bought something from was a Newegg newsletter. The last ad I clicked on was for http://getyourbasketballon.com/ which is some Eddie Murphy thing. Pretty amusing and the game featured on the site is a decent NBA Jam knock off, with even more ridiculous dunks. Takes forever to load, although they do give you a little mini-game to play while it's loading.
So, anyways, does the average Digg user click on ads: not very often
Does the average Internet user click on ads: yes. They click on lots of ads. Some examples:
My banner ads I'm running have a click through rate of ~0.5%
My adsense content network ads I'm running have a CTR of ~0.25%
A well written and targeted google search ad can have CTRs in the 5-15% range - CreedFeed, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1Just post a bunch of articles consisting of lists.
- inactive, on 06/19/2009, -2/+2Ad Block + and Filterset G blocks all adsense ads. Get it here http://adblockplus.org/en/
Help delete ads from the internets. - ryantxr, on 06/21/2009, -0/+0Internet advertising makes quite a lot of money for many people. Google and Yahoo both drive most of their revenue from Ads. Don't knock it. Learn how to do it. Many people do ignore ads. However, some do click on ads. Not everyone is a rebel.
:) - cubicledrone, on 06/19/2009, -0/+0"I'm still curious, has anyone here actually clicked on an ad on a website, and if so, did you ever end up purchasing something because of it?"
I have a better question. Have you ever seen an ad for something that you're really interested in? My guess is the overwhelming majority of the answers to that question are "no."
It's not that advertising sucks. The ads suck. - cubicledrone, on 06/19/2009, -0/+0Blocking ads from Google is the height of hypocracy. The same people who block those ads use Google constantly. Google has spent billions of dollars making sure their ads are not obtrusive, spammy, loud, blinking or even competing with the content of the page. In fact, contextual ads complement the content of the page.
Using Adblock to filter Google ads is just urinating on someone else's building. Nothing more.
(We'll bypass the redundant hypocracy of noting the ad for Adblock) - diggerado, on 06/19/2009, -0/+0And don't forget TACO: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/110 ...
