- Inceptious, on 06/28/2009, -6/+312"I was in the PC repair/consultation biz for about 6 years, and I never saw (or heard of) an Acer without problems back then" perhaps that's because you only saw PCs which required reparing.
- tidu, on 06/28/2009, -1/+247I'm a doctor and all I see are damned humans with these medical problems.
- Blajano, on 06/28/2009, -7/+161Because everybody loves netbooks.
- Asvetic, on 06/28/2009, -5/+148When you build a powerful laptop, then sell them for about $600-$700, it's easy to get major market penetration.
- macmcraeart, on 06/28/2009, -2/+131edit: because everybody loves inexpensive computers
- Jaziek, on 06/28/2009, -6/+121I dont get the hate here. I've had my current acer laptop (Aspire 6920G) for about a year now, and I've had no problems at all. As soon as I got rid of all the bloatware it came with (which comes on any big brand laptop, dont hate) it ran like a dream, and for the price, it was insanely good value. I've had far more trouble with other brands than acer.
- judicar, on 06/28/2009, -20/+111Because crap floats
- cuoops, on 06/28/2009, -1/+72Because they are cheap and do everything that 74.582% of the population needs to do with a computer (and a little extra if they need it).
- MeLikeyTacos, on 06/28/2009, -61/+130They were terrible in the 90's, and they're terrible today. I was in the PC repair/consultation biz for about 6 years, and I never saw (or heard of) an Acer without problems back then. Fast-forward to the Acer "comeback" happening now, still hear nothing but problems. Case in point: a co-worker of mine recently bought one of their Netbooks and was pretty happy with it. 2 weeks later he tells me that it "made a weird noise and won't turn on anymore". He sent it off for replacement and has yet to receive the replacement; and they've been arguing with him that he must have caused the problem.
You could call this anecdotal evidence, but keep in mind these are my Acer observations for a decade now, with consistent results. Acer is bottom-of-the-barrel; I rank them in the same class as "E-Machines". They seem to be riding some wave of positive press lately which I can't fathom where it came from. I'm not hating on Taiwan, either. Plenty of good products come from there. Buy something else. - f3rg, on 06/28/2009, -1/+67ASUS is coming on big, too. I realized on my latest PC build, that I ordered an ASUS mobo, video card and monitor, and I never once thought about the brand until I got a bunch of ASUS boxes from Newegg. The whole Eee PC line is also making huge strides.
- inactive, on 06/28/2009, -5/+65I own and I have at LEAST 4 good friends with Acer laptops. None of them have ever had any issues at all. Got mine 5 years ago and it still runs just fine, I only replaced the battery last year.
- tidu, on 06/28/2009, -1/+59And because everyone loves $200 23" monitors!
- yocouchdigga, on 06/28/2009, -10/+49and Android Netbooks by October! :D
- ChileanGoD, on 06/28/2009, -5/+42In other words they are raping the market.
- Coven, on 06/28/2009, -2/+37Acer's got a BBB rating of D-.
After my Gateway (owned by Acer) died suddenly I ditched for Asus and never looked back. - Wrangler76, on 06/28/2009, -5/+37Just so my comments don't get buried in some Anti-Acer flurry.
Acer is much more reliable than HP and Compaq. They are less reliable than Asus, Lenovo and Apple, but that's because you pay a premium for those brands. For their price range, they do well. The problem with Acer is brand image. There are many that are still stuck in the past. They are like the Ford of the computer industry IMO- making decent products now but they still have many hearts to change.

- dexter311, on 06/28/2009, -5/+35You own your friends?
- inactive, on 06/28/2009, -0/+30Only the ones i bought fair and square.
- macmcraeart, on 06/28/2009, -4/+34Poor customer service? Really? Every pc manufacturer on the planet farms out their customer service to india.
- onimusha115, on 06/28/2009, -1/+28My girlfriend and I both have Acer aspire one netbooks with no real issues. The only thing that has happened is that for some reason the screen will go black while the computer is running and you need to restart it. It has only happened once for me tho, so I dont really consider it a problem. I will admit the draw was the price, $299 for a netbook with win xp, 160 gb hdd, 1 gb of ram is a good deal. If a company can bring my low cost products ill buy them, I dont really care about customer service becuase I never call them anyways. I dont tend to shop by brand names, my desktop is custom built of cheap non name brand parts, my monitors are X2gen lcds which I had never heard of before purchansing, and so far no problems after 2 years with this setup. Even my 32 inch lcd tv is a sylvania which I thought only made light bulbs and thats had no issues. Sometimes your just paying for a name and not quality. Maybe I'm just lucky.
- inactive, on 06/28/2009, -2/+26What gave you the idea he was talking about EEE's?
- CoreyFC, on 06/28/2009, -3/+26I wish I could digg this comment twice.
- bjwest, on 06/28/2009, -2/+24I have an Acer 9300 laptop. Been using it for a couple of years now with no problems at all. Before this, I had an E-Machines M5305. Bought that puppy back in '97 or so and it still runs fine. Maybe a bit slow by todays standards, but works like a champ.
Like anything, Acer and E-Machines have/had good products as well as lemons. Maybe I lucked out twice, or, being in repair/consultation, maybe you just saw and heard about the lemons. - Kerrigore, on 06/28/2009, -0/+21@evil-doer
"Sometimes it just ejects itself randomly without touching it as well."
Sounds like you may have deeper issues. - sndream, on 06/28/2009, -2/+22The claim about Acer have quality issues is ridiculous, all the big computer "maker" don't really make anything anymore, they all outsource it out to OEM company.
- azikrogar, on 06/28/2009, -2/+21Who relies on Customer Service when you buy a PC? If ***** goes wrong, you man up and fix it. Don't be a sissy.
- Renian, on 06/28/2009, -0/+18At least their monitors don't suck. I'm using two at the moment.
- cyssero, on 06/28/2009, -5/+22Exactly. They've flooded the market with unbeatable laptops and rely on rebates to lure customers into purchasing them.
Their customer service is poor and there are numerous complaints about the way they handle rebates. However, in recent times I find build quality to be fine and comparable to just about any company out there (keep in mind most consumer grade notebooks share identical parts sourced from many OEMs). Quanta Computer assemble Acer's machines, and Quanta handle some of the best regarded brands out there
A few years ago their CEO said "we're going to take the #1 spot" and sure enough they're going to. Their machines are great for consumers but in the near future I can't see them competing with Dell in the corporate arena. - marcb83, on 06/28/2009, -0/+17Asus has been big for a long while, they make high quality components. Their Eee PC(I have one) is really their only new market venture and that is taking off.
- brandonelliott, on 06/28/2009, -0/+16Fair comments for both sides, I myself am an underpaid($10 an hour) over worked (56 hours a week) technician for a small town computer shop and see a lot of problems with anything under $1000 whether it be HP/Compaq, Gateway/Acer, Dell and Toshiba. My honest rule of thumb is you get what you pay for in a Laptop. Sure you can buy an one of those brands for $600 that has 3-4 gigs of memory a 320gig drive and a decent processor but have you ever picked one up and felt how cheaply built it feels? not to mention try disassembling one and the ***** thing cracks. Asus certainly has the best warranty (2year w/ 1st year accidental coverage) and comes with a bag and mouse in the box from the factory. Look up the F50 model 16" screen plenty of ram and hdd space and a 1gb nvidia graphics card for around 1300 bucks, not to mention the quality is top of the line. I also worked at Staples Business Depot for 3 years and people ate those 500-600 dollars laptops up (myself included Sony VGN-N250 $397 - Clearance priced) I've had a battery and ac adapter replaced. I guess it boils down to luck to be honest. Some people get lucky some people end up spending 600 dollars every two years. Its a ***** up world!.
- Wrangler76, on 06/28/2009, -3/+18Nice anecdotal (mis)information. In recent PC reliability surveys, Acer has the exact same failure rates as the rest of them. Why? Because manufacturers tend to choose from a standard variety of parts-manufacturers and designs now.
- topgigmedia, on 06/28/2009, -0/+15makes no sense.
- Asvetic, on 06/28/2009, -0/+15Yeah, I was referring to Acers, since the article was about Acers.
- smacksaw, on 06/28/2009, -4/+18Yeah, we've had several Aspire One netbooks that have failed. They pulled that ***** on us, saying that we broke it. I feel sorry for people who don't have any technical background because they probably get hit with the $200 fee to get their stuff fixed.
I told the woman that her allegations were absurd and asked her to compare her knowledge to mine. I started to ask her specific things about the malfunction and she could not explain why the accusation she was making about what we did to the computer had any foundation in reality. I demanded to speak to a supervisor. She put me on hold and told me they would replace the unit after about 5 minutes.
Acer is squandering a tremendous opportunity with netbooks. - tgc1, on 06/28/2009, -2/+16How did that happen? They're cheap.
- inactive, on 06/28/2009, -1/+14business orgasm
- Barbarino, on 06/28/2009, -0/+12I agree, my gf's daughter has one and she loves it and it has no problems.
- kd420, on 06/28/2009, -1/+13My brother and I got an Acer laptop each, about 4 and 5 years ago respectively. His hard drive failed, and the battery/power supply on mine went all wacky, so I just threw my HD in his and kept the laptop. After 5 years the thing still runs beautifully, at least under Linux. They certainly aren't the best quality, but I consider 5 years to be beyond the life of a laptop.
- Phssthpok, on 06/28/2009, -3/+15I rank them in the same class as "E-Machines"
They are E-Machines. Acer bought Gateway and E-Machines. But my Acer 5515 laptop is nice. Kinda cheap yea but what isn't. - faizal5k, on 06/28/2009, -0/+12Are you sure it's an Acer motherboard or Asus motherboard? I'm pretty sure Acer don't make motherboards.
- primatage, on 06/28/2009, -1/+138 full pages worth, that's almost an impressive level of douchebaggery.
- jakem1, on 06/28/2009, -5/+17I read it without registering.
- RudeTurnip, on 06/28/2009, -0/+12Asus never sucked hard as far back as I can recall (early 90s).
- xjeffx, on 06/28/2009, -3/+14I'm a Mac guy, but needed a cheap laptop to take to work and do Excel spreadsheets with. Couldn't justify a $1300 Macbook so I bought a $399 Acer laptop at Best Buy a couple of months ago. After ditching Vista for Win 7 beta I couldn't be happier!
- DentThat, on 06/28/2009, -1/+12Your changing your mind due to one random digger?
Go to some REAL sources and read reviews. Geez! - HonoredMule, on 06/28/2009, -2/+13Yeah, but what monitors DO suck these days? They're all pretty much the same now, unless your needs are more...professional.
- SteveIsTheDude, on 06/28/2009, -1/+12Gay is a synonym for effeminate, stupid.
- browwiw, on 06/28/2009, -2/+13I've had my Acer Aspire laptop for nearly two years now and have never had a problem out of it. I'll upgrade it to Windows 7 when that comes out and just keep using it until "the next big thing" comes along.
- SteveIsTheDude, on 06/28/2009, -4/+15Your use of the little dots there was...gay.
