10107 - nmnnotmyname, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2No, but on a semi-related note, Photoshop itself has a really annoying error message.

- diggduggjoe, on 03/25/2008, -1/+6It looks like a fresh load and he is putting back some files for Quick Books. Seems reasonable to me that the desktop would not be filled in that case.
- Jookly, on 03/25/2008, -1/+3except that it has the logmein.com client running. It isn't a fresh install.... unless he is into nLite, which would be cool.

- undyboy91, on 03/25/2008, -0/+15System call failure.
A system call that should never fail has failed. This is a generic error code, returned under various conditions.
Returned when a system call that should never fail does fail. For example, if a call to WaitForMultipleEvents fails or one of the registry functions fails trying to manipulate the protocol/namespace catalogs.
Returned when a provider does not return SUCCESS and does not provide an extended error code. Can indicate a service provider implementation error.- Cerebral, on 03/25/2008, -9/+6Just another reason why people hate Microsoft/Windows. Anyone who were to get this error while trying to copy the files that would look this up would say "WTF does this mean?" "What do I do now?"
- Memitim, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6I would imagine that the vast majority of Windows users never see that error since it happens so rarely. Hell, I've been in IT for years and have never actually seen it happen. Admittedly, I have seen a LOT of Windows errors, but not that one. :)
- ZippyV, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Probably because another application (like a virusscanner) was overriding kernel functions.

- hello2usir, on 03/25/2008, -0/+11Why mention just .NET?
The function you speak of is called MessageBox, and it is exported right from user32.dll, which is a core windows library.
Its sole purpose is to display quick messages and receive basic user feedback, while hiding all the dirty work of creating controls.
It's been around forever, since the very early days of Windows, well before .NET, and most if not all WinAPI-ready languages have it.
Hell you can call it from MASM with a single Invoke. - nmnnotmyname, on 03/26/2008, -9/+3.NET sucks, 1, you might as well use the C language.

- nmnnotmyname, on 03/26/2008, -4/+1Oh yes it does. It sucks bad. Beyond all suck. If you use .NET for full applications, or even slightly-bigger-than-tiny applications, your annoying us. Please kill yourself.

- Thuktun, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2In other words, the file copy was probably to a device whose driver returned an error where it wasn't supposed to.
- Cerebral, on 03/25/2008, -1/+6Why the hell couldn't they just write that in there?
- PleaseJustDie, on 03/25/2008, -0/+8Because the Driver didn't return an error code, just a generic failed code. Error and Success codes in windows API's aren't (usually) just 0/1 for fail/success, they usually have a range of codes (like -50 to 0 for failure and 1 to 50 for success) that describe more about the actual error. This problem is happening because the process has failed and returned a generic failure code (0) to windows and since windows wasn't given specific information about what caused the error it can't tell you why it happened.
Most likely if its an offending driver that had the problem the issue is with whoever programmed the driver not sending a more informative error code. It still could be Microsoft's fault if its one of their drivers, but it could be a problem with a third party driver. - Cerebral, on 03/30/2008, -0/+1Yes however, and I'm no programmer so I don't know, why can't it return some more information about what the software that caused the error (file, app etc.). For instance if I was using Adobe Reaer, Firefox, Songbird, a couple network utilities and say notepad and that error popped up why would it not say something like "While Adobe Reader was loading PDFTest.pdf windows returned a general hardware error". Not that it necessarily means that Adobe caused the problem but at least I can check something. Or how about telling me what driver was causing the issue. To me just telling me that "some" error occurred and not telling me what, why and where what the hell good is even telling me there was an error in the first place. It's kind of like "Thanks for the info... let me try this again now..."
- PleaseJustDie, on 03/25/2008, -0/+8Because the Driver didn't return an error code, just a generic failed code. Only Apple...- ezman700, on 03/25/2008, -10/+2What does that mean, dude? I'm pretty sure you get disqualified for using "error" three times in a row...
- WiseWeasel, on 03/25/2008, -8/+7To be fair, that would most-likely be seen only if a 3rd party developer screws up and has a broken error condition with improper handling. I'd be amazed to see that in Apple's in-house software, and would file a bug report about it if I did. With Windows, I wouldn't bother, as I almost expect useless, cryptic error messages.
- chrismgtis, on 03/26/2008, -1/+3Oh God! You just made a no-no! You said Mac has funny errors too! Mac users are ***** off everywhere.
- Nysul, on 03/25/2008, -2/+13That actually makes sense, an error occurred, but didn't ***** anything up.
- mhuggins, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4Not just Microsoft...eBay gave me that error message once too.
- soundofmind, on 03/26/2008, -0/+0That's nothing really too out of the ordinary. What likely has happened when that message appears is a looping or recursively-defined function's exit condition throws an exception. The system likely has a default pop-up box with "Error: [exception text here] "
- VegaObscura3, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Is this going to be on the test?

Or, a function returns an error and calls SetLastError(), but a later function calls SetLastError(0) before the error message is presented (this is a bug; If you expect GetLastError() to return something meaningful, you're supposed to cache the error before doing anything else, specifically to prevent this). - SysStream, on 03/26/2008, -0/+0yay! YES!
- thealliedhacker, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1The error you posted and the one in the image both make sense.
The one in the image is due to an internally failed assertion; this is probably due to the hardware, things like this will happen if you overclock too much.
The one you posted is due to someone using the wrong logic in thier error reporting mechanism. Someone called GetLastError and just output whatever it said, not checking to see if there actually WAS an error.

8 / 1 = 8
8 / 0 = infinite
try it on your calculator- thtroyer, on 03/25/2008, -1/+13A better way of seeing this is on a graph.
http://www.coolmath.com/graphit/index.html
Graph 1/x.
When x is 0, it is 1/0. 1/0 is undefined. From the right, it is approaching infinity. From the left, negative infinity.
Now, lim (x->0) of 1/(x^2) is infinity. But, you don't get infinity from just things like 8/0. That's just undefined.- MadOtaku, on 03/25/2008, -0/+11Infinity is undefined. Basically the limit of 1/x as x approaches 0 from the right is undefined, but it's a particular type of undefined: infinity. The limit could have also failed to exist because of a 'hole' in the graph (removable discontinuity at the point in question).
- Euler2718, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2How do you remove an asymptote?
- MadOtaku, on 03/25/2008, -0/+6Asymptotes are not a removable discontinuity (and off hand I can't think of a function that makes one). I also should have clarified that there are more ways in which a limit can fail to exist; I just picked removable discontinuity because it's the first that came to mind.
I'd come up with another example, but I can't remember all the ways a limit can fail to exist; I remember how derivatives can fail to exist but I don't think it's exactly the same and don't want to spread inaccurate info. - XristosAnesti, on 03/26/2008, -2/+1I can see how your association with girls might fail to exist as well.
- MadOtaku, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Actually, I'm just a really good learner; I remember all that from hearing it in lecture once. I find math interesting but my interest in music, current events, and just being good with words and conversation makes me a fairly popular person. Not all diggers are lonely losers who can't talk to women.
Knowledge actually makes you more able to talk with people. I know enough about various subjects that I'm comfortable talking with all my professors but am up-to-date enough on music and events that I can talk to all my peers too. Pretty much the only thing I can't talk about is TV; I hate it and stopped watching it last year.

- SLockhart, on 03/25/2008, -12/+1No. pi = 3.14159265
- MadOtaku, on 03/25/2008, -1/+12No, solving the equation for a circle's circumference for pi yelds: pi = circumference/(2*radius). pi is irrational and any attempt to represent it as a decimal will fail.
- SLockhart, on 03/25/2008, -12/+1No. pi = 3.14159265
- SLockhart, on 03/25/2008, -20/+1Dividing 8 by 0 is 8. I don't see how that's hard is to understand.

- MadOtaku, on 03/25/2008, -1/+4I'm not going to bother explaining why you're wrong, but you are. If you want to know the answer read up on limits and infinity. Specifically you'll want to read about how limits can fail to exist.
- solidus636, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2How many times does 0 go into 8? INFINITE.
- blazes816, on 03/25/2008, -8/+3If anything it'd be 0. Put 8 objects into 2 groups. There are 4 in each group. Put 8 objects in 0 groups. How many are there per group?
- WiseWeasel, on 03/25/2008, -0/+7infinity or 'does not compute'...
- SLockhart, on 03/26/2008, -7/+2No, dividing by 0 is the same as not dividing at all. I don't care about all your useless theoretical crap 8 divided by 0 is clearly 8.
- thtroyer, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2No.
Take 8/1. It's 8.
Take 8/ 0.5. That's 16.
Take 8/0.25. That's 32.
Take 8/0.125. That's 64.
Take 8/0.0000001. That's 80000000.
I could keep going, but that's just unnecessary.
8/0 is undefined, but as the denominator approaches 0 from the right, the result approaches infinity.
(And I don't even like math. :/ )

- hello2usir, on 03/25/2008, -1/+4It's a Winsock error that happens when the service provider, in this case it's likely the network card driver, returns an unexpected error condition back to Winsock. And since drivers operate in Kernel mode, they don't need to worry about user privileges.
- koft, on 03/25/2008, -4/+1service provider != driver
- hello2usir, on 03/25/2008, -0/+5In the context of Winsock and Windows programming, a driver very much is a service provider. I suggest buying some books on the subject.
- koft, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1You're right, a kernel mode driver on windows can in fact be a service provider but a service provider doesn't have to be a driver. You need to read some books on the subject.
- hello2usir, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2I'm well aware of this, but that has no bearing on the original argument, which, to reiterate, is a counter to "this is what happens when you write your software assuming the user has admin priv". Rather, this happens when a service provider returns an unexpected error signal back to Winsock. A driver, which is a service provider, can do this, without regard to user privilege.
Now I will entertain your original comment so far as to say that yes, conceivably, you could write a user mode service, such as an LSP, and due to insufficient privilege, return errant status to Winsock. However these two things are mutually exclusvie. The truth is that any number of strange errors can (and do) occur because a programmer has disregarded access rights in his code. However, this particular error is not necessarily indicative of such an occurance.
Read it a few times and it will sink in. - koft, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1You're right, I agree with your last post 100%. There really are 1000 possibilities other than user priv that could cause this error and immediately assuming priv is the source of the problem is irrational.
- chrismgtis, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1And typing "!=" instead of does not equal/is not the same as (etc) does not make you cool, it just makes you look like a massive tool. Don't ever do that again.
- koft, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1oh! byte me. i could have written "not equal" but != is short hand. a service provider is not necessarily a kernel mode driver, there for !=. quit being pedantic.

ps. I'll recommend using something like "Error unknown" so Vista doesn't look sooooo stupid hahahaha
- hello2usir, on 03/25/2008, -1/+4It's a Winsock error that happens when the service provider, in this case it's likely the network card driver, returns an unexpected error condition back to Winsock. And since drivers operate in Kernel mode, they don't need to worry about user privileges.

no, not lol.- iloveazngurlzs, on 03/25/2008, -6/+17vista is pretty good. A few glitches because its so new, but its still pretty badass/
- Frenzy44, on 03/25/2008, -15/+4not if you count the 2 gigs ram you need to run vista. an OS should make its goal to be lighter/faster than its predecessor, and hog less memory.
- Doomhammer, on 03/25/2008, -2/+8Not to defend Vista's outrageous resource hogging necessarily, but newer versions of OS'es should have more features, and thus require more resources. If the goal was solely to make each new version more light than the previous one, then features would steadily be _removed_, and if that happened I think you'd be complaining even more than you are about Vista hogging resources.
Now, granted, Vista pushes this to the extreme (i.e. only adding a minimal amount of features that are actually useful while consuming a vastly greater amount of system resources), but you shouldn't make a broad statement that it's bad simply because it uses more memory than Windows XP did. - shadcrkd, on 03/25/2008, -2/+4"should make its goal to be lighter/faster than its predecessor"
so xp should be ligher and faster than win95? - staxofmax, on 03/25/2008, -0/+11Good God, not this ***** again.
- telepheedian, on 03/25/2008, -0/+7If you hate Vista so much, maybe you should just go back to 2000. Compared to 2000, XP is just bloated anyway. :P
- BCModder1, on 03/25/2008, -4/+2I hate vista and I run it, and the bloat in vista is far greater then that of XP in comparison to win2k. meh imho MS released vista to feed the dogs till they could sweep it under the rug once windows 7 gets released, yay another ME for us. XD

When OSX, or any other Apple operating system, can be run on near enough ANY PC in the world without crashing like a bitch, call me.- mrBitch, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1So, Windows is better because it CAN crash like a bitch on "near enough ANY PC in the world ?"
- xaeon, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1I think you completely misunderstood what I'm saying. The majority of Windows' crashes are caused by third party devices and drivers. This is one of the reasons Windows may appear to crash more often than a Mac (although, I think the problem is greatly over exaggerated). I'm simply saying that Macs don't support the hundreds of thousands of third party devices and drivers that Windows does, and you can bet your ass that the day Macs CAN support all those drivers, etc, is the day Macs start crashing left, right and centre.
- mrBitch, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1So, Windows is better because it CAN crash like a bitch on "near enough ANY PC in the world ?"
- InnerBlueAbyss, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1I repair Computers on all sides of the spectrum, and Mac's crash more often than windows machines, not to mention OSX is watered-down linux. - mllawso, on 03/25/2008, -3/+2Agreed. You can tell by looking at the pixels. Only photoshopping makes pixels like those.
- NotLikely, on 03/25/2008, -0/+7This is not evidence of Photoshop. It's evidence of your lack of understanding of digital imaging. What you're seeing has nothing to do with whether or not the image was faked in Photoshop. If you were to take a screenshot of a similar display on your PC, open it in your choice of image editing utility, and then save it as a JEPG-format file, you would see similar artifacts, making no changes to the original, uncompressed image whatsoever.
Conversely, I can create with Photoshop a faked-up Windows screen that displays no unusual artifacting at all - I just have to avoid using JPEG compression, and choose to save it in an uncompressed format, or one that uses lossless compression. When you apply JPEG compression to an image like that with hard color transitions, you get noise around the hard edges. That's a natural artifact of JPEG, which was designed to work on continuous tone images like those encountered in photographs, and which always exhibits this type of artifacting on flat-color images with sudden color transitions. So the funny pixel noise has nothing to do with Photoshop. Try it. Learn it. Understand it. And don't shoot your mouth off about things you don't understand.- theshizzler, on 03/25/2008, -1/+6Take your logic and reasoned explanations elsewhere.
