- DiGiTaLFX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It lacks a way of installing vmtools tho :(
- slowspin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't fret - check this out.
http://digg.com/software/VMWare_for_FREE_ - kplex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No you don't have to run XP.. I've just installed Ubuntu on my windows box so that I can run Apache-MySQL without having to fire up my linux box. Works beautifully.
- standsolid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0brilliant.
+digg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The fact that my 'decent' windows pc come with restore discs....... bleh
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0because you can
while it is possible to get the full version legit or not..
this shows you can use the free "player" version to actual create a virtual machine.. rather than just use virtual machines already created.
so it is just a hack to get more functionality out of the freeware.
i digg it. - redguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is just awesome, I don't need the features from the full version of VMware anyway.
- KeyExpert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is pretty interesting stuff. I'm going to have to find my XP disk!
- XSixteen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweet ^_^ another good reason to use UNIX
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> why?
so you can run your key generators without fear of being rooted and p0awnd. - dlichteman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ALso seems to be great for running linux on windows
- slowspin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know, I think that's the best way to test anything, load up several VM's and just try things out.
Also, there is a tutorial on hack-a-day for building this with ANY OS, so if you want to use Linux, I recommend you check that out, should be the third or fourth post down. - edmicman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0would this work for development work? I want to convert to linux on the laptop, or maybe even get a powerbook or something, but I've got .NET programming to do....hmmm, I wonder how things would run under a virtual XP?
- ReyBrujo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I second Qemu. Under Linux, with the accelerator, is almost as fast as VMWare, and much free.
- jasutton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why use Qemu just to create the disk image for a non-free (non-free, as in freedom) program? Why not use Qemu for the actual emulation session also? I've used it for several OSes and and it works wonderfully. Plus, it's Open Source :)
If you're looking for a pretty GUI, Qemu Manager seems to work nicely. - m1k3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NO it makes perfect sense especially for QA and Developers alike. I can crash the image of xp anytime I want to without re imaging my PC. I love this. Writing cross platform software without having two machines? Also if you are a security buff you could use the vm image as a "sandbox". :)
- yakk0dotorg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0VMWare is much more mature than Qemu. Now my office computer is running SuSE Linux and my windows admin tasks are done in a clean VM.
- MemoryDump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0using this method would it be possible to modify it so linux could be install under xp?
- lowbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dont get why vmware is even used at all. Qemu does all this naitvely. Ive run knoppix in a qemu session on my XP machine.
- stevec5000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Why would anyone want to run XP inside XP? Makes no sense!
- vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1why?

- SDNick484, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Considering it requires an XP CD, I don't exactly consider this free.
