- atommclain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5actually vexter, while this article is written for a mac system, its applicable and would actually work on windows or really any modern operating system.
- queraxus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Get over it mate. You're getting hot under your nerd collar.
- gerkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hehe, maybe a working version of uTorrent for OSX? ;)
- kingjokin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I am guessing that a very good percentage of the digg community are mac users. digg whats important to you. obviously apple related stories are. so if you you dont like it, digg some non-apple stuff and quit your bitching.
- franksands, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yes, you were right, but I think it's interessing nevertheless.
- tekin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3How is torrent flux for uber-geeks.....
I set it up with Web interface in under an hour and I'm not much past a noob - ErniePC12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I could see me wanted a file in the middle of the day, and telling my home computer to get it.
It does make sense, and I'm sure you can do this with any platform... - walterk29, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You, sir, are a moron.
- ucg1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1With the Azureus web interface plugin, I find it much simpler. You just paste in torrent URL's (although you can upload torrent files if you like). Also, you get the advantage of being able to manage your torrents through the web interface.
With the method mentioned in the article, you could make it secure by using SFTP to transfer the files (instead of a chat program), but it would still be an extra step of downloading the torrent files, transferring them through SFTP (or chat), and then deleting them locally. And you can't even manage the torrents.
This method is definitely not any simpler. Maybe for setup, but if you aren't such an idiot that you can't figure out how to setup Azureus's web interface plugin, then just use that. - SpoBo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's offcourse possible to do this without a Mac ... I actually do this between my Mac and my desktop for .nzb files as well :) works brilliantly. Alternatively you could make an FTP server with write acces to the directory etc ... easy as buying pie.
- irodman, on 11/20/2009, -0/+1Interesting, but why would I download torrent files remotely?
I spend a few minutes at night to check what I would like to download, click and then just leave it. - kjart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How is sending files over an IM client significantly harder than using scp/ftp to transfer the torrents? I've been doing that for ages.
- atommclain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thats actually a pretty good point.
I *think* however that this setup is somewhat secure. . if the account is set up only to recieve files from members in your contact list (with adium) and the only person who is on the automatic download torrent IM account is yourself I think you would be pretty safe. - caldaean, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3And I hate the way a lot of people troll, shout and hate in the comments. As far as I can see, you can fit 15 stories/page when browsing digg. This means that even if 3 stories/page are submitted in the wrong category, there are still 12 that are right. It makes no sence at all for people to start bashing, trolling, flaming, even writing ridicolously long comments that are also partly/fully offtopic from the story. Don't like it, don't read it. At least don't digg it. If you really don't like it, bury it. Just don't spend so much time doing something that really don't benefit anyone. To put it in GTD perspective: If it bothers you that much, why spend more than 2 minutes telling everyone else about it when you could easily have read a whole page with new stories, not containing the one that bothered you?
And for the "you are hated and considered a vile infestation of digg". Apple/Ubuntu/Linux/Windows-people aren't the pestilence here. Trolls, flamers and people otherwise suffering from delusions of grandeur are. That's why my blocking list grows every day. In time, comments will actually be readable, but for now.. well, let's just say that the digg karma is way to low. - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -11/+11I haven't read the article, but this idea seems incredibly simple, so let me take guess what it says...
Set your IM program auto-download files to a certain directory.
Set your torrent application to auto-load .torrent files in that same directory.
Make sure both your IM and torrent apps are running when you leave.
Download .torrent files and file transfer them from your remote location to the IM account you are connected with at home.
Well, was I right? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i been wondering how to do that..gotta link?
- gerkin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I suppose you'd rather see ANOTHER article about making a LAMP server on Ubuntu then?
Oh wait I have a better idea, STFU and don't read these stories then. - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't know about Adium or iChat... but I know on many Windows IM programs (the technique should work on most any OS, not just Mac) you can set file transfers to only be auto-accepted if they are from someone on your contact list. While not foolproof, this would certainly lessen the security vulnerability.
- mdeltito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ill pass on this and continue to use my Azureus + swing web gui. its perfect, shows my download progress and actually lets me UPLOAD torents to it without worrying about watched folders.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No one made you click on the link or comment on it.
And I think its pretty obvious there are far more than 2% of digg users who a) use macs, or b) are interested in apple stories. - Oobitsa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Is there some digg preference box that I can check or uncheck so that I can filter out the constant bitching from anti-Apple folks. If they don't want to read about Apple stuff, I wish they would just pass the link over and move on. Jeez, even the Windows dude in the Apple ads isn't this troll-ish!
Meanwhile, anybody have any luck following the instructions in article? - foolonthehill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I set up a torrentflux box from scratch last year, having hardly used linux before and only installed a distro once. It's pretty easy to do.
Here's what you'll need:
Ubuntu server edition
Torrentflux
ddclient
I found this guide helpful: http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu_lamp_torrentflux_vmware
It's three pages long, but you don't need most of it if you're installing on an actual box rather than using VMWare.
ddclient is just a little piece of software to let you use the DynDNS.com service to connect to your computer remotely if you have a dynamic IP. See http://www.dyndns.com for more details. If you have a static IP then you don't need it.
It took me an afternoon to set up and it works fine. - rnickel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Personally I just use uTorrent. It has a small foot print, has RSS feeds for automatic downloads (REGEX's can be used to filter out things), and it has a web interface built in. What more do you need?
- furyg3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1While this is a cute trick, I generally would recommend *not* auto-downloading files offered over IM.
One of the commenter's on the blog pointed out "hey, it's ok because they're people on you contact list!". Actually no. IM virus/worm/trojans almost always come from infected buddies, and spread by sending themselves to friends on your contact list.
Yeah, yeah, mac user's don't have to worry as much about viruses (IM or otherwise) as Windows users do, but that doesn't mean that they're not susceptible. There just aren't as many viruses.
Poking around for a few seconds I found this mac IM virus: http://www.viruslist.com/en/viruses/encyclopedia?virusid=112454
So it's quite possible. I'm not saying "OMFG, don't do this!!!!1!11!", I'm just saying that you should know what you're doing by auto-downloading and executing things, since it's not the most "secure" thing to do... - mokojo100, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2BTW that 2 % accounts for all the servers out there as well, not just the Desktop PC market where you woudl fid the share is more.
and besides that still a million users at least who would find it intersting - poseitom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0… what an ass… be more tolerant dude and your world will look better!
- abwesth, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Allowing Adium or iChat to automatically accept file transfers is not recommendable. A bit to risky if you ask me...
- vexter, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2I must admit, I didnt even read it. I just get so frustrated with what the Macers are doing to digg.
- LogicallyGenius, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2when will these MAC SPAMSTERS leave Digg alone
I have said no to mac in Digg customize but damn, it doesnt work - vexter, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3Why am I seeing this stupid apple dribble. I have Apple unchecked. Can we get this moved into the Apple cue so the other 98% of the web that use PC and find this a waste of screen space wont see it? I realize its software related, but your only 2% of the total computer users in the world. So your software news isnt really news to the rest of us....
- vexter, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2I wasn't done yet.
I also hate the way Apple users digg ANYTHING Apple, regardless of its importance. This one of the big reasons you are hated and considered a vile infestation of digg. Stop digging up every Apple submission. Stop putting Apple stuff in NON APPLE categories. If we wanted it in the main categories their wouldn't be an APPLE category. Notice how their isn't a PC category?

What is Digg?
