- green1152, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is one of the most revolutionary technologies ever.
The actual name of this technology is called Augmented Reality, and has been in the works for years. There are thousands of applications for this from education, to medicine, to tourism, to science, to entertainment.
Here are some links to some other Augmented Reality projects:
HowStuffWorks.com - http://computer.howstuffworks.com/augmented-reality.htm
The Invisible Train - http://studierstube.org/invisible_train/
The Augmented Reality Quake Project - http://wearables.unisa.edu.au/projects/ARQuake/www/

I hope you guys have fun looking at the links. This is one of the most amazing and promising technologies ever. - yaweh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This project was funded by John Madden.
- hdherndon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is the kind of video people will look back at in a few decades and giggle about
- Lucid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Best description ever.
- mycatsboots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1People at MIT are smart.
I love you. - Bostonsox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think that would be great for remodeling a house or something. Do it on the that machine and let the customer walk around and look at what they will see everyday.
- PitPat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not seeing how this is very impressive. What I'd curious about is how much it cost to develop this... because I can think of a pretty easy way to accomplish this with COTS components.
- jonecat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is pretty slick, it will do wonders for the porn industry.
- isny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What happens when you fill up your room with blobby things? My guess is that you take that monitor, hold it upside down, and shake it to erase them.
- ericush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That must be the "Flying Spaghetti Monster" I've been hearing so much about lately
- george@CASE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is very nifty. To the naysayers, inventions often don't have any practical applications to begin with (like X-rays) but other people build on top of the technology to make something really significant.
- wai_xing_ren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is Alice's looking glass.
- Sonic_Molson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, thats sweet. There is so many things that can be done with this, awesome.
- pox05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i say this has huge potential, think about sending data around the world, or 3d medical opperations... training, teaching, and so on
- nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this would be cool in the medical field. Get this device to take scans of the patient and one could have doctors manipulating items and finding ways to find and treat problems.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0way cool..
+digg - clubgus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if the you can use real world objects such as Sydney Opera house, a Can of coke or even a some sort of virtual object the user desires that can be placed in the "Virtual Space", this application could be the next real life VR technology, imagine this technology implemented in a Haunted house or on a Roller coast A++++++ Zillion times DIGG on this!!
- Randude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Imagine this with lcd glasses. It could make an awesome ride at an amusement park. They could change the programing every year so that the exhibit is completely different, even make interactive virtual characters. ;)
- sacjim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The next step in virtual reality. 10 or 20 years from now, 3d glasses could do a radar ping of the room to get the topography, then overlay that with the blobbies, which by then will be monsters or whatever, and then we'll have DOOM 28!
- pussyWagon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That was pretty amazing.
- maad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0neat
- stuffedstich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This has sooo many uses i cannot even imagine.
+digg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0blobby things are nice.
dugg - AdverseEntropy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Friggin' crunk juice.
"AE'S SEAL OF APPROVAL" - SurePete, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i donno.
as the one guy said, its just mapping a live-feed to a virtual space (holo-cube). if there would be some kind of object detection in it, that allowed for example to have the shape be hidden behind one of the computers and then if you move it to a special angle they would than appear, that would be cool. but they are just floating in open space here. really nothing too impressive. - flavius731, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this would be great for architectural viz. get a "live" view of what a concept would look like
- SystemError, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I do not know why I would need this but I WANT ONE!
- danmanx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Incredible. I am always amazed by advances in technologies such as this.
- Achilles1942, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its cool but what is the point
- Tom_Riddle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I WANT ONE IN MY GLASSES!!!! and I want Call of Duty on it too!! and a little jack for my Apple earbuds. (thats right. i said it. their Apple. Bow to me!)
- oh_em_bree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is just like the dissapering ink from way back when. You know, the stuff you needed a black light to see. Good stuff, only this is a little more "high-tech" but come on, invisible ink that can only be seen under a black light is so much cheaper.
- beejay54, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is fantastic. There are so many applications for technology like that! And whoever keeps bashing Quicktime can stop right now, you're obviously to young to remember that Quicktime pioneered video playback on the personal computer.
- uclatommy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0big whoop.. He developed an algorithm to measure distances with the camera and move the objects on screen relative to the motion of the camera.. I thought I was gonna see holograms or something in real space. Now that would be impressive..
- digman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0These MIT people wasting thier smarts on this crap, I want a flying car damn it, like the one from back to the future, but more updated and without gay micheal j fox.
- j0keR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, nice technology, but a nice article describing it and its potential uses would have been nice as well.
"Virtual blobby things," Hmm, well-- glad to see it has so many applications in our every day lives! - RatBagu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm digging this. There may not be an incredible amount of use of "blobs" but those MIT guys will put this technology to work. Either that or make the best games you've ever seen. Imagine the "walk-throughs" for the game. Download a file to your tablet, and actually _walk through_ the game.
Also, home designers may find a use for this when they're redesigning a house. They could have a specific layout and the customer can view the design before it is actually constructed.
Architects will have gigantic warehouses that will only require this tablet and a potential client walking through their future house.
Extraordinary technology... more ideas come into my mind as I write this...
I'm digging this... :-)~ - billpoly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting, but what is the application?
- choco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0a professor at my university has done a similar thing with mobile phones:
http://www.uni-weimar.de/~bimber/research.php
Video See-Through AR and Optical Tracking with Consumer Cell Phones - PSUstoekl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that is absolutely incredible, i think. much cooler than anything ATi or nVidia has done in the past, oh, four years.
- tempestivo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know why I am even justifying that with a response, but your an ass ddaydude. I wouldn't be at 1 for 3 if I were hacking anything. Loser.
- CheeseMan316, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0umm.... that's nothing. I converted my Neo Geo to do that about 12 years ago.
Actually, that was awesome. - Asystole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great stuff. This could prove very useful.
- mantis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmm yeah smart...pretty amazing actually. +dugg
- Desslok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I think it is a hoax!"
Yeah, and the earth is flat too! That whole Columbus thing was an elaborate setup. Wake up people! Technology is the Devil! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Yeah, and the earth is flat too! That whole Columbus thing was an elaborate setup. Wake up people! Technology is the Devil!"
Earth is locally flat. - ddaydude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hacker!!! i didnt digg this!! this person used http://digg.com/technology/Huge_digg_glitch_found_ to get his submission on the front page!!
- seemsArtless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To everyone who asked "What is it good for?" the answer is ALWAYS the same - advertising. This is an example of the technology used to create those ads that get superimposed over a sporting event broadcast.
In the future you'll actually pay money NOT to see the ads, but see green trees and water falls rather than ads for Firefox and The Gimp - jsheinz1234, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Did you notice that they were extremely careful NOT to let you see the backside of that monitor!? I think it is a well choreographed demonstration! Watch it again. He says he "moves" the blobs to the back of the space, but he does nothing other that pick up the monitor.
I think it is a hoax! - kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0LOL, I dont understand the use of this...
- Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0People at MIT are smart.
ya tyhats y im aplyng (spelling is not a realy important thing for me)
bout time we get some realy cool stuff like this....
but its 2005 and i dona hava flying car by now!!!!! -
