- sudeepbansal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not surprizing - In the future we could have an internet based OS. Just sit at any terminal anywhere on the planet, log in and start working.
And btw the terminal would only run some basic internet connection software and thus all the computer systems which r getting outdated will be utilized. :) - catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1G00gl3! r mAKinG aNu HAKiNG t00L caLL3d 3dStuDio MAx..aNd ITS DeFinATlY tRue CUZ i Wrote3 it oN mY BLog!
- robche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1google has OS programmers to work on their own OS which they use for their own machines
- bugmenot3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0robche hit it on the head. There are already a bunch of examples of this. They have thier own clustering software, network file system, etc. That's the focus of thier OS researchers. There's not much point in Google trying to leverage thier OS in an already crowded market. Especially when they have shown they can present several differant kinds of apps with extremely easy to use web based interfaces.
Thier employment of Mozilla/Firefox developers can be seen as a similar focus. Google leverages the latest standards and technology to provide useful tools through the web browser. So by employing Firefox devs they can help ensure that everything works in Firefox as it should, and focus those devs on things that might not get fixed/done otherwise. - Chamunks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hopefully google utilizes XENsource i dont want another os for poop sakes i want no os i just want a base core layer between my high demand games and my customized hardware profiles damnit
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh wait. Maybe they're gonna raise money to merge with Amazon and form Googlezon!! :O
- FunkyGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They will make their own OS. for google, it will be used on GOOGLE computer, because then everything in the OS will be perfect for GOOGLE. not for the public, unless you plan on running a search engine.
- *jooloop*, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, so I wrote it, but I want my say. Apparently this OS will be based on linux and be simple and easy-to-use. (like other Google "products") that's a unconfermed rumor though. Still, if it comes out, i'd get it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0More people (not just tech people but the world of computer users) probably know the name google more than micorsoft. I know that sounds hard to believe but everyone loves google most people don't know they can leave windows.
- WonkoTheSane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can google make an OS? sure
Can google make a great OS? most likely
to bad fort an OS to be successful you need lots of software to run on it.
will that happen? most likely not - Jasoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I doubt it. Unless by then Windows has lost so much market share that it seems like it might work, I doubt they'll risk it. They'd be better to just keep at work on utilities that work across the existing OSes, OS X, Linux and Windows.
If they did, though, I'd probably stick with OS X unless they somehow make an OS that is more intuitive. (Doubt it.)
I really don't want Google to become a money grubbing Microsoft 2 though. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0True, all those OS researchers are on making the best of the cheap technology platform google uses, at the end is their core business, processing humongous quantities of information, the better an the fastest.
An OS from google would be an overkill there is OSes aplenty and google wouldn't make the difference. - TaintedReality, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It would be interesting to have an alternate OS that is easy to use sorry Linux guys but for the average user Linux is way to complex. For most users if it doesn't have a start button they're lost.
- herlehy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Humm, I would not go for another OS for the market. I would however be more interested in a Googleized Linux, where the stuff is more built into the core of the OS. Though thats just my preference.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lmao, they do email, maps, search... what else, OPERATING SYSTEM AND WEBHOSTING? Look's viable to me!
sike. - bitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually a google os isn't such a far fetched concept. I'm sure they could produce something really wicked if they put enough effort into it. The idea being of course that it would replace the windows os.
Though I would never use it, mostly because I just don't trust google when it comes to privacy (the issues concerning gmail come to mind, even thier desktop search). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no no no, why do people like to start rumors that are very unlikely to happen, google os by 2010? more like 2015 0r 2020
- adminmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is creepy. i told my friend all google needed was an OS then they would dominate.
this will probably bring on an apocalypse of some sort. lol - jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Truth is, Google makes plenty of money off of their widespread advertising and something more cost efficient like search.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doubt it. Google Grid would be nicer! We have enough Os's-Linux Windows and Mac. Theres no need for anymore!
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If google created a os I would not buy it...it's bad enough they know about your emails and searches...imagine a os where they would know whats on every computer their os would be on
- alexander000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jay, wow, you need to take you googleValium.
- Jacobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I few google as a fun company that makes nifty easy to use (mainly) web based applications and services. I hope they kind of stick to that since it's what they do well and not try and grow in too many different directions.
I do like the idea of a google optimized linux distro though. - Maajid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"no no no, why do people like to start rumors that are very unlikely to happen"
Because they want their paper to sell? - blakemara, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From email to an OS that is a pretty big assumption but it would be very cool nonetheless
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0google has a lot of very useful products (gmail, google suggest, google maps, google earth) but they also seem very intent on invading the privacy of their users. this is why i didnt install their desktop search tool and also why i will not be using any google OS, if it ever gets made, which i doubt it will. they cant take on microsoft and apple in the desktop os market. they should stick to what they do best, the internet. microsoft should give up on the internet (ie7, msn, outlook) and let superior open source projects take over. if they just focused on windows it would be a much better product and without IE, 98 percent of the security holes would vanish.
- whackaxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and in 2050 we'll have GoogleBabies, context-specific babies who grow up to who you want them to be, with a clean simplisitc interaface and lots of room for growth. viva speculation.
- jay314, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0googleOS.. googleIM.. googlePC.. googleBrowser.. googleMobile.. googleTower.. googleToothbrush.. googleToilet.
How about you guys shut the ***** up with the stupid unsubstantiated rumors and wishful thinking? You know what? If google would just come out with a googleYogurt, it would take over the yogurt industry with its bright colors and easy to use interface!@!@!@#21121 IT COURLD HAPPENZ!!@!@ ZOMG!!@ - reggiedarden, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Crap, commented on the wrong story. It's late I gotta go to bed.
- gab00n, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Google has yet to release a piece of software that they created by themselves that has impressed me. They focus too much on did the chicken come before the egg and not enough on actual programming skills. I say it will be a mediocre product when it comes out and will flop if they don't start hiring more real programmers soon.
- reggiedarden, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I haven't used it but 1 minute and it has crashed on me. I'll stick with 2.0 for now. It crashed after I changed the mouse hover option.
