- Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -4/+55Does your antivirus software really need to be eye-candy, just out of curiosity?
- thelimopit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38I love AVG, it just doesn't get in the way.
- adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35Avast is really great, but it is more resource intensive than AVG.
- IEatHamburgers, on 11/10/2007, -0/+24@guytoronto:
You're not supposed to install AOL with it... - BurtCokain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Yep, they have improved the interface a lot. It doesn't look like a 16-bit Windows 3.11 program running in Windows 95 any more. It's always been a quality bit of kit, and now it's beginning to look the part too.
It has new tables, the fonts fit in with the design better and the buttons are actually styled! The pictures look like they use more than 16 colours, too. Still the same task bar icon though, I think.
I'm running on Windows 2000, it probably still looks like a Win2k program on Windows XP :D - RipperMortis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Dugg for linking directly to the download page and not some filthy blog.
- Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19'works just as well as Norton' is such an unflattering compliment!
- ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18pllllease, quit blaming it on filesharing. yes, stupid, reckless activities will put you at higher risk, but there's plenty of risk for the average, law-abiding user as well, both in the workplace, and at home. try teaching your mother-in-law NOT to install all those "fun little games" she likes to play, without pissing her off, and in turn your wife, leading to a month of nights on the couch.
no, not a personal experience, just an example. - cthellis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Wait, you need to SET that? You must have gotten it early, because every copy I've installed in many a moon updates and runs on its' own straight away.
- Misanthrope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Yeah Techie one...you just...umm...stop that. Whatever...it is you're...doing...exactly...
Who the hell is Techie1?? - randomboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20You just used AOL and pwns in teh same sentence!
- Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17'inform everyone'? If you're running an office, using the free version is a bit naughty :)
- toesofrubber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15AOL Active Virus Shield is just Kaspersky in an AOL t-shirt, IIRC...
- Kahnza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16No, you have to manually run it. And select a repair install.
- nwshc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16AVG Free is the best. Before AVG, my mom would always buy Norton. What a peice of ***** that was.
- Endemoniada, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16AVG is great! It's easy, lightweight and works just as well as Norton without all the stupid crap and bloat.
With Norton, there was always popups and notifications or whatever on my parents computer. I replaced it with AVG when they reinstalled Windows, and it's been working smoothly for over a year now. - dean, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21avast! typically uses around 20 to 30 megabytes of memory. Considering avast! has a higher detection rate in reviews than AVG, I would rather have the larger memory footprint.
- guytoronto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Too bad it conflicted with my system. AMD Athlon, running CounterSpy. Every night, it would crash my system. Halfway through the day, it would corrupt my Torrents.
I removed Active Virus Shield, and stability returned to my system. - guytoronto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13You sir are an idiot. Just because you don't need anti-virus software doesn't mean nobody else does.
Some people have spouses and kids who click on every single attachment in an e-mail. - calpis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14it actually does look better imo
- Avengelist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Go into the task scheduler and set it to update every day. While you are in there, set it to scan automatically, too. It'll take you two minutes.
- flickers, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16I've been using Active Virus Shield from the Kaspersky Lab
http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp
Although this is offered free by AOL ,which I'm not a huge fan of, it's pretty good and light weight. - chrismcelligott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I still can't convince my boss that Norton is a piece of *****. He likes having the "support".
- scooze, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14When will you ever learn? An AV-software is much more important than a FW-software!
FW are just to salve your conscience. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Techie1 was a user that left a comment right above DEAN. it seems like he might have unregistered himself from digg.com. his comment was something like "this anti virus is a waste. it only searches for already known viruses. when it's too late. pwnd!"
ok maybe he didn't write "pwned" i just always wanted to say that - nixr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10AVG is the only AV software that has no noticable impact on my system's performance. It works well and scans my system fast. I don't get viruses so I don't need a real powerhouse and AVG does the job well.
- Atti2410, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11From their License Agreement for AVG Free:
"You must not use the program in a network or on more than one computer."
In the days of the internet, this is kind of hard, isn't it? - slatkin, on 10/12/2007, -11/+20"Considering avast! has a higher detection rate in reviews than AVG, I would rather have the larger memory footprint."
Or you could stop downloading random executables from untrusted sources on the Internet and save your resources for actual computing. - ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10from the AVG site at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
New in AVG 7.5
* Improved virus detection based on better heuristics and NTFS data streams scanning
* Smaller installation and update files
* Improved user interface
* Windows Vista ready
* and more - spyres, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You can turn the visible update notifications off.
Bring up the "control center"
view -> Extended mode
Double click the "update" manager box
Untick "Display information about update process" and click "okay".
AVG will no longer steal focus.
Enjoy
Oh, one can similarly change the e-mail settings. - ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I've been using it for ... three years now? maybe longer. never been nagged.
- sremick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Considering that one of the features of this new release is "Improved virus detection based on better heuristics and NTFS data streams scanning", all of you saying that a person should use Product Y instead of AVG because Y has better detection rates should really just wait for now. Until NEW studies are done with the improved engine in AVG 7.5, referencing old studies for older versions are not longer relevant. It'd be like "Yeah don't use FreeBSD 6.2 because FreeBSD 5.0 sucked" (which it did).
- richbradshaw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Will the old version autoupdate to this version? Or do I have to inform everyone to update manually?
- dean, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13Techie1: That's what heuristic scanning is for.
- Salival, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Its odd you need to goto the website and download the new version. Doesn't auto-update.
Love the program, been using it for ages. Lightweight, doesn't bother me at all. - whiznat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yes. From Grisoft's press release:
"AVG installations will automatically download this recommended update within the next 2-3 days (this is because of load balancing)."
@Teaboy, please research your answers before posting. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9why the hell would you link us to that? i understand mentioning anything about Apple computers usually get you a lot of diggs. but not in this case buddy.
- AkiraXXX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Avast is a nice program, but it gave me some trouble with an application I used every day. Nothing earth-shattering, but AVG has performed well without incident or impact. Considering the fact that Norton actually makes me pay for the privilege of screwing up my computer, I figured trying something for free couldn't be any worse. So far I have not been disappointed.
- Irco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5...or you could have just linked to the site..
- doodlebumm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6AVG just caught a tojan and a virus on a server (that I helped with a few weeks ago) that were not detected by three other antivirus programs, including Symantec and McAfee. I think AVG is safer then most because it isn't as big a target (having a smaller market share than the big guys). I've seen a number of cases of the two top dogs being disabled by the virus so that you can never easily clean it off. I have not tried avast, but I have felt pretty safe with AVG.
BTW - I use Linux on MY desktop, but I have replaced Norton dozens of times on other people's computers. - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Techie1 = ?
- ArmandoM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4He didn't say he was in an office.
In my case if it doesn't update automatically, I'll have about 30 different friends and family members that I'm going to have to call and explain how to install it. - cwcheang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5how do you know you havent got infected? no random reboots / shutdowns.. bsod? etc.. dont really mean there isnt any virus on your comp. Online scanners are insufficient. Download avg or avast and you might find a virus or two. and even if you dont you're only lucky.
- Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6This used to be sort of true, I never used an AV for years, but since all the browser and email exploits, it's not really true anymore.
- DanielNielsen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3AVG was my preferred anti virus app when i was a windows user, and I'm definitely going to install this on my gf lappy, cause in my opinion AVG kicks all the other anti virus competitors ass, no doubt!
- altcountryman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not just pwns, but pwns in the face. That's some serious pwnage, yo.
- kensavage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3wOOHOOO decent Anitvirus for us poor folk.
- doodlebumm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Shivetya
Change the time that it does updates and scans to a time that you are not usually using your computer. Easy and works like a charm. - bblnrlz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Avast compared to AntiVir and AVG
http://wiki.castlecops.com/AntiVirus_Comparison
suggests the following ranking: AntiVir >> Avast >> AVG
