- Bashell, on 01/18/2008, -1/+99Yay for open standards!
- Fritzy, on 01/18/2008, -1/+61We don't know yet what this means. An XMPP server has mysteriously shown up that seems to work (until the digg world takes it down to it's little alpha knees). This does not necessarily mean that AOL is doing anything more than just playing with the idea. Don't get me wrong, this is VERY VERY cool. If they federate (meaning public Jabber servers can talk to them) it will tear down some might high walls.
- Cybermarc, on 01/18/2008, -2/+60I hope soon that every body will start using Jabber.
Let's fight, to win! - showntelle, on 01/18/2008, -6/+44Who uses ICQ anymore?
- stylewarz, on 01/18/2008, -1/+37GTalk and .mac already use Jabber as their protocol so the question is: Who's left then? MSN, YIM...did I forget any major IM network?
- flosoft, on 01/18/2008, -1/+32Jabber is the future. Learn it, love it :)
- loconet, on 01/18/2008, -1/+27Excellent news but MSN will switch to jabber right after DNF is released and Hitler wins the gold medal in ice-skating at the hell winter Olympics.
- br0ken1128, on 01/18/2008, -1/+25Pidgin works but it'd be better if the folks who work on pidgin only had to worry about the XMPP protocol and could drop oscar/icq all together.. the fewer protocol plugins that pidgin devs have to keep updated the better! .. smaller software package with potentially far less bugs to worry about.
- spike411, on 01/18/2008, -1/+24.Mac leverages OSCAR/AIM.
- Philluminati, on 01/18/2008, -0/+21The integration of all messenger clients will be awesome.
- sondr, on 01/18/2008, -0/+19if this gets official, Jabber will be #1 in countries like the US, Germany and Czech B-)
- Atomic1fire, on 01/18/2008, -0/+17if they all use it then it will be a major issue of features instead of networks
which Instant messenger do you prefer - spike411, on 01/18/2008, -0/+17There is no "Jabber program" and there are tens of XMPP/Jabber enabled clients already.
- Kelmon, on 01/18/2008, -8/+24...OK, I've Dugg you down but I'm still not sure why you asked to be. Honestly, I think you have a point but I'm just following instructions. Tell you what, I'll try an experiment...
Digg me up!
Let's see what happens. - bitspace, on 01/18/2008, -0/+16Not sure why spike is being buried - he is correct. iChat supports XMPP/Jabber, but the .mac IM account is an oscar protocol - the same as AIM.
- johnnysaucepn, on 01/18/2008, -1/+161. Open standard is not the same as open source.
2. Why does the article description use an RSS image? - cawfee, on 01/18/2008, -1/+15I guess they finally realized that restricting your chat protocol to only one service is so 90's. I hardly know anyone who uses the original clients anymore, and instead the trend moves toward multi-service IM programs and open standards. Yay progress!
- bitspace, on 01/18/2008, -0/+14I do. Lots of people that use lots of different IM networks, including ICQ. Unfortunately I forgot the password to my original 5-digit ICQ number and no longer use the email address associated with it, so I'm stuck with an 8-digit ICQ number.
- iofthestorm, on 01/18/2008, -0/+13Yeah, it would be very nice although currently I find that Pidgin serves all my multi-protocol needs. On that topic, anyone know how to configure Pidgin to work with this?
- lispmachine, on 01/18/2008, -1/+14Microsoft will rather prepare its own proprietary patented quasi-standard with at least 10k pages of specification which they even wont know how to implement.
And of course it would be ironically named something like Open MSN Messaging Protocol. - mahler, on 01/18/2008, -0/+13Yes, but you still need a separate account for all of them.... with Jabber, you can use one account and communicate with people in all other messengers.
- bradleyland, on 01/18/2008, -0/+13When you think about it, maintaining a proprietary protocol doesn't make sense in today's market. The only reasoning for a proprietary protocol is user lock-in, and that battle is already lost. There are too many multi-protocol IM clients available. The value for someone like AOL or Yahoo is in keeping people using their IM client, so they can display ads. If I'm a Yahoo user, the Yahoo client has some value added. It provides quick shortcuts to my mail and other Yahoo services. However, if I can't talk to my other friends, I may feel inclined to switch to a multi-protocol IM client. Yahoo loses out on the opportunity to display ads.
A uniform protocol makes as much sense for IM as it does for email. How many people would use Yahoo, AOL, etc if they could only email users on the same service? - aladrin, on 01/18/2008, -1/+12Or maybe it's both. They've probably finally realized that their proprietary protocol isn't earning them that much money any more since most people use Trillian or Pidgin instead of the official, ad-laden client. So they're going to use a better protocol that let's the interact with other networks and maybe ever convince people to use their client again. It's win-all-around.
- jonshipman, on 01/18/2008, -1/+11Which sucks... I'm hoping Apple at least updates to Jabber when AOL does. Now that feels weird typing - waiting for AOL to innovate and Apple to follow...
- tortfeasor, on 01/18/2008, -4/+14How does a "*****" revolution different from a traditional revolution?
- jellygraph, on 01/18/2008, -1/+11Yahoo might do it, but Microsoft? Hahaha... Microsoft will never adopt any open source technology if it is advantageous to their users.
- arjung, on 01/18/2008, -3/+12seriously, using numbers for a screenname sucks.
- sondr, on 01/18/2008, -0/+8Psi works! Instructions for Psi and Coccinella are here: http://wiki.jabber.org/index.php/AOL_Alpha
- sondr, on 01/18/2008, -0/+8It's still popular in several countries. I know it's still #1 in Germany and the Czech Republic.
- br0ken1128, on 01/18/2008, -0/+7The situation as is now is that we have many different networks with many different clients so you kind of have to run several different programs in order to communicate with friends on those different networks (or install something like pidgin) .. the nice thing about everyone switching to XMPP/Jabber is that they can focus on making the chat client better and spend less time updating the prorotcol .. it becomes a competition of features rather than a competition of features and services
- TheNik, on 01/18/2008, -0/+7libpurple ftw
- omgiamjonas, on 01/18/2008, -0/+7that's not the point. If everyone uses jabber you don't need a multiprotocol chatclient like pidgin.
- sondr, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6Psi works! Instructions for Psi and Coccinella are here: http://wiki.jabber.org/index.php/AOL_Alpha
- Bootes, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6Apple doesn't really do anything other than make an AIM client. .Mac just gives you an AIM screen name that matches your .Mac account. .Mac IM = AIM
- surma884, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6Steve Balmer (CEO of Microsoft) hates everything that is not Microsoft and everything that didn't originate at Microsoft. He says Google Search sucks compared to MSN Search. :D MSN Messenger will never switch over.
- k1down, on 01/18/2008, -1/+7If you want to speak with germans or russians, you need icq. Especially in EVE online.
- sondr, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6There will be no problem: you simply will have 2 separate buddy lists and you can choose to move all your contacts to the service you want, but this is not required.
- grenden, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5Touché.
- Luminoth, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5Yeah it's a bug that happens when you edit a comment with links in it. They become broken like that. Thanks for the repost.
- Philluminati, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5The best approach is 1 standard protocol with a wide choice of client implementations. When I read his message I got the impression he was saying "let's only have one solid client app" which is disagree with. 1 protocol is better because it means we can (hopefully) merge the networks together.
- meandcat, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5Last night i successfully logged in with Adium but this morning it didn't work anymore. Maybe AOL closed the server after they realized it got public. or maybe the server is just down because too many diggers tried logging in at the same time...
- DiFosfor, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5Pigdin would be a funny name, but it's Pidgin (http://www.pidgin.im/)
- priegog, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5And this just a few days after it was made public Skype's stance on this issue: No open protocols for us thank you. What a shame...
But great for AOL (which I normally despise) and ICQ (are they still around?). Hopefully this move will show up in their user bases and show every other player in the game where the world is going in this respect. - halr9000, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5Here's a wiki page where you can find more info: http://wiki.jabber.org/index.php/AOL_Alpha
- sondr, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5Instructions are here: http://wiki.jabber.org/index.php/AOL_Alpha
- akatsuki, on 01/18/2008, -1/+6iChat supprots jabber already. The real question is AV. I want someone to take Skype and kill it dead, and it is sad that more people don't use Wengo.
- Luminoth, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5Would you mind reposting those links unbroken?
- rboyce, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4Actually, AOL has been working on this for quite some time, and may or may not be part of their integration talks with Google Talk.
Blog post from Justin Uberti, formerly AIM staff, now at Google:
http://juberti.blogspot.com/2008/01/aim-xmpp-gatew ... - Dongvid, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4Yes it is proprietary. That's why pnrl suggested that skype uses Jabber as their protocol. No thanks for your comment.
- mrjeep, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4I think the odds of MSN Messenger adopting open source technology are 1 : AVeryLargeNumber
