- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -3/+13Wow, ***** is an excellent find, I ran it on some PNG files and was able to optimize them by about 20%.
- bradleyland, on 06/08/2009, -0/+8An image format that does not suck.
- eq2s, on 06/08/2009, -1/+6Wow, various versions of IE have many issues displaying PNGs. Open source browsers ftw.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 06/08/2009, -0/+5Acronyms FTW!
- jemka, on 06/08/2009, -0/+5WTF is a Google?
- inactive, on 06/08/2009, -0/+5PNG makes JPG look like BMP.
- dawnraid101, on 06/08/2009, -1/+5WTF is a pussy?
- quomen, on 06/08/2009, -1/+5Compressed, that looks a lot like "*****"
- koanage, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3photoshop doesn't do all this stuff and not everyone is on a high speed connection (my iphone sure the hell isn't). these tools also can do things like strip out gamma correction in pngs which can make your images display incorrectly while wasting space. anyways, optimizations like this are mainly about page load time for reasons similar to the study amazon did showing 100ms to equal 1% less sales, not so much about bandwidth costs.

- zebradropping, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2How do you know there isn't a better one listed? You don't even know there's a GUI for PNGOUT called PNGGauntlet and it's even listed in the article. I'm going to take your comment "with a grain of salt".
- koanage, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1ImageOptim is good for OS X
- GeekNurse, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1For major resizing jobs (batch) and some other minor things, I like FastStone Photo Resizer (freeware)
- JackT, on 06/08/2009, -1/+2OptiPNG, loseless PNG shrinking tool for *NIX.
- LethalLink, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1Nº 7 is the best. It should be Nº 1.
- Zoshchenko, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1RIOT - which stands for Radical Image Optimization Tool - is an image optimizer for Windows users that is available as a standalone application or as an extension of IranView.
"IranView"????? No. Close, but wrong on so many levels. - XFi6, on 06/08/2009, -2/+3I read it as Smu-*****, at first.
- koanage, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1i typically use photoshop/fireworks first and then drop it into smush.it... also, there is imageoptim for osx which is nice and makes use of pretty much all of those command line tools. then again, if it's web you're doing it for you can always browse your site with yslow or the newer google page speed and they'll optimize your images for you. google page speed does it locally, while yslow links up to a yahoo hosted version of smush.it (the creators worked there, so they're pallies).
- DAC1138, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1Yep. Digg me down MS Paint users.

- 1n4007, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1Just a Mac user. Pissed cause he can't run any of the programs in the article :D
- antdude, on 06/08/2009, -1/+1I still use Ulead SmartSaver Pro v3.0 (2000!) for this.
- Jucken, on 06/08/2009, -0/+0The pixels! Argh! Make it stop!

@chessthecat check this out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Png_file - eramos, on 06/08/2009, -2/+2Thanks, my images were in dangerously deoptimized condition.
- Colinho22, on 06/08/2009, -0/+0Photoshop's not too bad either.
- DAC1138, on 06/08/2009, -3/+1Nothing beats skill and knowledge. And Photoshop is useless without skill.
- annjay, on 06/07/2009, -3/+1In my opinion, Smush It is the best. I knew about Riot but all others are new for me.
- dreamache, on 06/08/2009, -7/+3Front page digg worthy? No, why? Because, in this day and age, practically everyone is on a high speed connection - so unless you're an idiot and using high quality JPG files for your layout, cutting off a few KB isn't going to make a noticeable difference.
Secondly, chances are if you receive so much traffic to the point at which your website's layout is cutting into your bandwidth quota, you'll be making enough money to either (a) hire a competent designer or (b) have a copy of Photoshop on hand. Dugg down for fluff article. - extravagant, on 06/07/2009, -5/+1PNGGOUT is definitely the best for making pngs as small as possible. The downside is that there isn't a GUI but the commands are so simple and they have a tutorial that it really is overkill to have a GUI for something so basic.
- Nuz08, on 06/08/2009, -12/+11. Photoshop
